  • Effect of ternary nanoparticles fluid mixture in heat enhancement and heat
           storage

      Abstract: Nanofluid is a class of fluid that consists of metal nanoparticles such as aluminium oxide (Al<SUB align="right">2O<SUB align="right">3) and water solution. For effective heat removal, the concentration of these nanoparticles needs to be below 4%. It has been found that only if the concentration is below 4% that the heat removal is possible. The purpose of this paper is to enhance the heat removal effectiveness and the heat storage capacity of nanofluid with microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM). When MEPCM particles are in the molten stage, it becomes favourable for heat removal and for storage. This paper demonstrates numerically the use of a ternary mixture of fluid containing MEPCM and Al<SUB align="right">2O<SUB align="right">3 nanoparticles. Both particles are at different concentrations, thus a set of different fluid/particles concentration is investigated. The fluid consists of Al<SUB align="right">2O<SUB align="right">3 nanoparticles and MEPCM particles in water. The effectiveness of these mixtures in heat storage is investigated for different concentrations of the two set of nanoparticles. Results reveal that this fluid can enhance the heat removal, and it has a good heat storage capability.

  • Brinkman-Forchheimr model for fat accumulation in arterial wall

      Abstract: A new model based on Brinkman-Forchheimr equation on transport of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in artery wall has been developed that includes the multi-layered model. Artery wall has been considered as homogeneous porous media, Staverman filtration and osmotic reflection coefficient has been considered. The realistic physical properties are available and have been obtained from the literature. Various models have been compared with the proposed model. The results are consistent with the other numerical and experimental studies. Effects of hypertension and pulsatile flow on LDL transport in arterial multi-layered wall have been studied in detail. Effect of pulsatile flow is imperative since blood flow in artery is a pulsatile flow. Hyperthermia is important for the treatment of cancer. Soret effect on LDL concentration distribution has been analysed for the hyperthermia condition. This model will help to better understand the effect of hypertension and hyperthermia on atherosclerotic diseases. Results reveal that LDL accumulation is directly related to the transmural pressure. For the straight artery, effect of hyperthermia is negligible for LDL accumulation due to the very thin arterial wall. Effect of pulsatile flow in LDL transport has been found negligible.

  • A numerical analysis of casing groove parameters on the performance of
           wave energy conversion device

      Abstract: Casing grooves in Wells turbine can enhance its performance. The present computational work has been carried out to understand the effect of casing-groove's width-to-chord (w/C) ratio on the performance of a wave energy conversion device. In this study, four different values of w/C ratio such as 0.24, 0.48, 0.64 and 0.96 were investigated. The circumferential casing groove depth (3% of the chord length) and tip clearance (1% of the chord length) were kept constant for all the cases. The flow field was analysed through discretisation of three-dimensional steady incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-stokes (RANS) equations with two-equation eddy viscosity turbulence closer model. The simulation results show that the w/C ratio has a significant impact on the turbine performance and the w/C = 0.64 was found to be the optimal one among the several values investigated in the present study.

  • Parametric study of operational PEM fuel cell using computational
           simulation, engineering applications of computational fluid mechanics

      Abstract: A numerical analysis of complex and coupled processes such as heat and mass transports, reaction kinetics, charge transport and flow has been attempted in this study to develop the performance of the PEM fuel cell. A number of operating and design parameters are examined, including the operating pressure, ambient temperature, relative humidity, the porosity of the gas diffusion layer (GDL), the effective porosity of catalyst layer (CL), the porosity of membrane (M), the proton conductivity and the air inlet velocity at cathode side. The numerically results found that with higher porosities of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) and catalyst layers (CLs), the performance of PEM fuel cell improved. In addition, it found that a higher performance can be achieved when fuel cell operated with reasonably higher operating temperature, operating pressure, proton conductivity and ensuring a full hydration of the reactants.

  • An algorithm for optimal design and thermomechanical processing of high
           carbon bainitic steels

      Abstract: In this paper we present a generic framework of a <i>computationally efficient</i> search algorithm to meet multiple objectives on a multi-dimensional search space. The algorithm is integrated with a penalty-based cost function that enables us to retain the interim optimal solutions. The algorithm has been applied to determine the optimal combination of alloying elements and heat treatment conditions to obtain steels with desired material properties, namely hardness, tensile strength and elongation. In this work, the search space is a combination of eight alloying elements and heat treatment conditions (isothermal temperature and time). To evaluate the quality of the alloying elements and heat treatment combinations, the algorithm is equipped with reduced order models for hardness, tensile strength as well as elongation percentage. The algorithm has been validated with respect to several standard test optimisation problems prescribed in the literature. Subsequently, the validated algorithm has been applied to develop optimal design solutions for steels with desired mechanical properties. In doing so, the framework is tested for three different evaluation functions to showcase the ability of the algorithm to obtain solutions meeting the desired targets/constraints.

  • Parametric optimisation of raised-floor data centres to enhance the
           thermal performance

      Abstract: Advancement in IT technology and the increasing demand in the processing and storage requirements have led to an increase in hardware densities, causing a significant cooling challenge in data centre operation. Extensive energy consumption and operational costs in data centre management are the main concerns that have led many engineers and researchers to develop numerous methods and recommendations to improve the efficiency of the cooling system. Establishing the temperature and airflow pattern for a typical data centre with hot and cold aisles is essential for the efficient thermal management. In this study, thermal analysis of a raised-floor data centre, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), is undertaken. Factors including room layout, CRAC location, percentage opening of perforated tile, air distribution system that contribute to efficient cooling in data centre design were studied. To further understand the capability of each design, five investigations were conducted of separate components of the configuration to observe their individual impacts on the overall data centre performance. Various design solutions to reduce the energy consumption and cost in the data centre are proposed based on the findings.

  • Experimental and numerical evaluation of the drag and lift forces on a
           scaled-down airfoil

      Abstract: Knowledge about the aerodynamic quality of a wing is an important factor in the design of aircraft. If the aerodynamic coefficients are not known, they must be evaluated using highly sensitive equipment. In this study, a low cost measurement system using load cells and strain gauges was developed and evaluated. It was used to measure the drag and lift forces acting on a reduced scale airfoil, when it was subjected to different flow velocities in a wind tunnel. The experimental values were compared with numerical results obtained using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The OpenFOAM code was used to predict the turbulent flow behaviour around the airfoil, considering different turbulence models. It was established that the optimal mesh for this study has 3.26 million control volumes. The experimental values of the lift and drag forces were provided by several runs with different velocities using the measurement system, which proved to have enough accuracy. Numerical results showed good agreement for the prediction of the lift force. However, the predicted drag force showed noticeable differences. Among the models used, the Spalart-Allmaras model provided the best agreement with experimental values.

  • Aerodynamic aspects of a small UAV during VSTOL

      Abstract: This work gives a better understanding of the aerodynamic interference between propeller and wing during different flight phases of a vertical take-off and landing (VSTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A finite-volume solver coupled with a blade element momentum (BEM) theory propeller model, are used to investigate the flow over different wing configurations. The findings contribute to design aspects of a three-rotor fixed-wing UAV capable of VSTOL and loitering. For example, the optimum minimum width of the deflected part of the wing is established. Also the optimum distance of the propeller ahead of the wing is obtained. The main originality is in the novel design of the UAV, which is a hybrid between a fixed-wing and a copter UAV. One of the outcomes of this research is a better understanding of the minimum thrust needed for operation, so keeping energy requirements as low as possible.
