  • Comparing ethical perceptions of accounting students
    • Authors: S.M. Shafiul Alam, K.M. Zahidul Islam
      Pages: 217 - 226
Abstract: In a study by Bruns and Merchant (1990), the authors found that the morality of short-term earnings management was of little concern to researchers and accounting practitioners. However, in the light of increased financial frauds and failures, new and increased emphasis has been placed on the importance of the concepts of earnings quality and earnings management practices. However, since 1990, there is little evidence that business schools and the profession are educating accountants about earnings management practices. Therefore, this study, similar to other studies, continues to use the Bruns and Merchant survey and compares the results of a previous study on students in the MENA area with a recent survey on earnings management practices. The expectation will be of changes in attitudes towards earnings management practices since the previous survey (including the financial scandals and passing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act). Therefore, the aim of the study is to determine if there have been changes in attitudes towards earnings management practices.

  • Electricity consumption and economic growth in Pakistan: menace of
           circular debt
    • Authors: Sehrish Liaquat, Haider Mahmood
      Pages: 227 - 245
Abstract: This study explores the causal links among electricity consumption, circular debt and economic growth. Covering the time span from 2005-2015 and using quarterly data, Granger causality based on vector error correction model (VECM) is employed to find the direction of causality after confirming cointegration. Next, the robustness of causality results is determined through variance decomposition analysis (VDA). The present study finds short run bidirectional relationship between circular debt and economic growth and between electricity consumption and economic growth as well. On the other hand, long run unidirectional causality is found running from circular debt and economic growth to electricity consumption. The findings of VDA reinforce causality results. The study finds that Pakistan despite being rich in natural resources (coal, water) is entangled in the web of circular debt that has made the blessings as curse which shows an example of poor governance. The results of study based on two econometric tools conclude with little more conviction that there is a need for exploitation of indigenous resources and wise allocation of available resources for electricity production and suggests electricity conservation policies including improvement of distribution and transmission capacity of its power system to reduce wastage of electricity along with less reliance on oil consumption in electricity production.

  • Economic structural changes in China: challenges and opportunities
    • Authors: Miranda Mei Zhang, Cassie F. Bradley, Alice Ford Collins, Mary H. Saunders
      Pages: 246 - 257
Abstract: As economic deceleration in China continues to reverberate across global markets, there are concerns and wonders about China's future growth and what it will mean for the world economy. China's economy is currently undergoing a major structural change and reform towards a new development model focused on achieving better quality growth that is more economically and environmentally sustainable, and achieves better social outcomes for the Chinese people. With a comprehensive approach to reform, it is natural and normal that the economic growth would fluctuate and sometimes fall rapidly post-peak. China's transformation has profound implications for the global economy. The recent stock market plunge could be a reaction to this economic transformation. China's new development model will continue to promote economic growth in China and in the world. As China is fast becoming a consumption-oriented economy with the services industry as the largest sector, the change presents the rest of the world with challenges as well as opportunities.

  • Defining fair market value of land in a thin land market of India to pay
just compensation - a case study
    • Authors: Tapas Roy, R. Jayaraj, Anil Kumar
      Pages: 258 - 274
Abstract: India has a new Land Acquisition Act LARR 2013. Its contents significantly differ from its earlier version of LAA 1894. But the Act continues to consider average market value of the adjacent lands as fair market value of the acquired plot and ignores the absence of active land market in India. Land plots in India are small and ownerships fragmented. The qualitative attributes of smaller land plots vary and hence their prices. Because of thin market, sales data are scanty and cannot be directly used for averaging. The new act has increased solatium to two to four times the average market value to obviate criticism of paying less to the landowners. This paper proposes to use rational method of computing for valuation of land to pay just compensation. This includes identification of attributes which affect agricultural land price and use the attribute differentials to modify the sale prices before averaging. Modified sale values then may be averaged to get the fair market value and used as a basis to pay just compensation.

  • Source of drinking water and the prevalence of diarrhoea among children
aged under-five in Ghana - recent evidence

Abstract: Diarrhoeal diseases are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children in low-and middle-income countries. Although the government of Ghana has implemented some interventions with reasonable successes over the years, diarrhoea morbidity still remains a public health concern. For instance, it was reported in the 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) that one out of every five (20%) children below five years of age had diarrhoea in the two weeks preceding the survey while the 2014 GDHS revealed an incidence of 12%. This paper examines the association between source of drinking water and the prevalence of diarrhoea among children aged under-five years using propensity score matching. The study found that drinking from improved water sources rather increases the odds of diarrhoea by about 1.3 times and this effect persists in both the unmatched and matched samples. We proffer potential explanations for this rather puzzling finding. The paper concludes that the Ghana Standards Authority should regularly monitor sachet water and other 'improved water sources' for its microbial quality to ensure that Ghanaians are offered clean and safe drinking water in order to curb the incidence of diarrhoea among children.

  • Is the BRICS decoupling effect reversing? Evidence from dynamic models
    • Authors: Edward Nketiah-Amponsah, Gloria Afful-Mensah
      Pages: 303 - 315
Abstract: The recent large drop of the crude oil price since the mid-2014 has created financial turbulence in the oil-based exporting emerging markets countries. The impact of this shock is examined for the BRICS markets using two approaches: 1) we study the BRICS as a group for any recent time varying herding or anti-herding behaviour using stochastic volatility models; 2) the bivariate properties of the group are examined via implementation of the multivariate GARCH methodology. Both approaches indicate a reversal of the behaviour; the statistically significant anti-herding behaviour is diminishing, and a rise of the dynamic conditional correlations is observed.
