  • Critical analysis of load balancing strategies for cloud environment
    • Authors: Anurag Jain, Rajneesh Kumar
      Pages: 213 - 234
Abstract: Future of cloud computing depends on effective installation of infrastructure, efficient utilisation of resources and dynamic transformation of load. Due to inundation of tasks at the data centre there is a need for load balancing strategy. This will help in achieving better fault tolerance ratio and higher customer satisfaction. Load balancing strategy plays an important role in he distribution of the workload dynamically across multiple nodes so that no server is either underutilised or overwhelmed. Also, due to data proliferation nature of data sources such as social media sites, geographical information systems and the weather forecasting system, there is an exponential growth of structured and unstructured data which is called big data. The present data models are not capable enough to handle big data. To process the data efficiently, there is also a need of load balancing strategy at the data centre level. In this paper, the authors experimentally analyse some popular approaches for load balancing of tasks in a cloud environment using the cloud analyst simulator.

  • Utility maximisation-based game theoretic approach for resource
           allocation in clouds
    • Authors: Anurag Jain, Rajneesh Kumar
      Pages: 235 - 247
Abstract: The applications that are being installed and run on the mobile devices need a platform of services offered on-demand and be reliable. These services are promised by cloud computing, where resource allocation plays a major role in providing the services and delivering the quality of service (QoS) to the cloud users. The task of provisioning the resources to the cloud users becomes challenging considering the proliferation in the number of users using the cloud on every day basis. The users in this context of proliferation can be considered as mobile nodes that need faster access to communicate among different devices and services. In this paper, the resource allocation on cloud is considered as a game between the clients or the users of the cloud submitting their tasks onto the cloud. Further, a utility maximisation approach as a game theoretic model for an efficient resource allocation in cloud computing is explored in this paper.

  • Extraction of volumetric features using 2.5D and 3D algorithms
    • Authors: Mohd. Sherfuddin Khan, Vijay H. Mankar
      Pages: 248 - 263
Abstract: A 3D image processing operation like 3D surface detection is carried out using 2D edge detection algorithm on every slice and the processed slices assembled to visualise 3D surface detected image. One can obtain surface detected version of a 3D image by processing the 2D slices using 2D edge detection operation, and consequently the 3D surface detection operation is termed as 2.5D image processing. One could also process the 3D image data using a 3D surface detection algorithm, which is termed as 3D processing. This is not the case with the operation of skeletonisation. One cannot make use of 2.5D skeletonisation operation of 2D slices in order to get skeltonised version of the corresponding 3D image. This paper discusses the discrepancies faced when 2.5D skeletonisation and edge detection of 2D slices of a 3D image is carried out instead of the direct 3D operations of the 3D image.

  • Hybrid load balancing approach for cloud environment
    • Authors: Anurag Jain, Rajneesh Kumar
      Pages: 264 - 286
Abstract: Cloud computing is the result of growth in networking and computer technologies in last few years. It focuses on providing scalable and reliable infrastructure for implementation of internet-based services. Its future depends on effective installation of infrastructure, efficient utilisation of resources and dynamic transformation of load. This will help in achieving better fault tolerance ratio and higher customer satisfaction. To distribute the workload dynamically across multiple nodes so that no server is either underutilised or overwhelmed, there is a need of efficient and effective load balancing strategy which should change itself dynamically according to environment and task. In this paper, authors have proposed a hybrid load balancing approach named JIMC by combining best features of some of the existing approaches. JIMC approach has been tested using cloud analyst simulator on various scenarios. It has been observed that JIMC approach is efficient in comparison to existing approaches and also prevent the system failure by giving warning of systems overloading in advance.

In a cloud data centre, a user request undergoes many stages from the time of submission to adequately served. The components of automated provisioning mechanism and dynamically changing environment make the performance analysis more difficult. We present a model that spotlights on important aspects of infrastructure-as-a-service cloud, from the time resource virtualisation to request servicing in a pool-based data centre. It analyses the equilibrium management, capacity planning considering multiple aspects through the given parameters viz., job rejection probability, system overhead, energy management, request completion time. Subsequent attempts made to generalise the data centre model. Exhaustive simulation results presented to validate proposal.

Abstract: The increasing popularity of social networks, such as online communities and collaboration networks, has given rise to interesting knowledge discovery and data mining problems. Different methods of knowledge discovery and data mining require different types of social network datasets, such as datasets including node and edge information or datasets with added labels or weights. In this paper, we review social network datasets in different formats and applications. Then, we propose a data processing method to add weights and labels for a Chinese collaboration network (C-DBLP). The weights reflect the affinity between two authors, and the labels contain information about the authors. This dataset can be used for privacy protection in social networks and social network community detection. Finally, we analyse the new data that we compiled and draw conclusions about the importance of the weights in the C-DBLP dataset in terms of social network research.

  • eduCloud: a VM communication aware, migration efficient cloud for
           scientific computing

      Pages: 329 - 352
Abstract: A computing cloud for research and educational sector should consider different performance factors like reducing VM-VM communication cost, reducing VM migrations, and reducing VM-shared resource communication cost (like a shared file system). This work proposes eduCloud, a cloud for educational institutions with optimised approaches for VM placement, virtual machine (VM) reallocation during cloud fragmentation and cloud consolidation. For reducing communication costs, eduCloud employs a graph-based algorithm which operates on affinity matrix that contains information about magnitude of communication within several VMs. Proposed approach is able to achieve a reduction of 16.44% on average in total communication cost as compared to approaches like vector dot. 5.73% reduction in total communication is achieved over tight fitting approaches like first fit and volume-based. Percentage of in-place unfulfilled demands is reduced by 5.9% as compared to tight fitting algorithms by under provisioning the physical machines maintaining cloud utilisation and resource wastage levels. eduCloud also incorporates reallocation and consolidation routines which decrease communication cost by 5.57%. The distributed version of eduCloud yields very inexpensive Job allocation times of 775.18 ms and 218.43 ms for communicating and non-communicating jobs, respectively.

  • A novel approach to improve quality of service in MANET using cache update
           scheme for on-demand protocol

      Pages: 353 - 370
Abstract: The route cache scheme used by on-demand routing protocol is significant in MANET. This paper presents, new cache update algorithm which determine broken link information to all neighbour's that can cache the route in routing table using distributed cache update algorithm in first stage. Then new time-to-live (TTL) field is attached with every cache entry to remove when it is expired at second stage. The proposed cache updated scheme not only maintains cache structure but also stores the information required for cache update. The proposed cache update scheme has been experimentally evaluated using network simulation (NS2). The analysis shows improved performance of updated dynamic source routing (UDSR) protocol up to 60% to 70% in terms of QoS parameters like packet delivery ratio, delay, routing overhead, drop rate compared to conventional dynamic source routing (DSR) protocol and 30% to 40% improvement compared to method presented in literature.

  • Cost and energy optimisation of cloud data centres through dual VM modes -
           activation and passivation
    • Authors: Choudhury N. Sahoo, Veena Goswami
      Pages: 371 - 389
Abstract: To support cloud computing, new generation data centres are dependant on virtualisation. Server consolidation and live migration of virtual machine are two important techniques to attain energy savings and load balancing. Energy efficiency, performance and cost incurred are different tradeoff parameters to be considered. We propose a queueing-based analytical model for performance of VMs under dual operational modes, that is, activation and passivation. Active VMs with higher computational power are used when the load on the system is high, otherwise, passive VMs are used. We achieve high-availability, load-balancing, fail-over, less energy consumption as well as cost optimisation through clustering of both active as well as passive VMs. To avoid congestion and to adhere the SLA under fluctuating workload, the system can easily switch from one mode to the other under certain conditions. Numerical results are depicted to prove the applicability of the proposed model for the data centre management.
