  • Random sales price-sensitive stochastic demand
    • Pages: 408 - 424
Abstract: Journal of Advances in Management Research, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 408-424, October 2017.
Purpose This research work introduces an imperfect production system where the demand is assumed to be stochastic and it is influenced by random selling price. The shift time from an “in-control” state to an “out-of-control” state is exponentially distributed. The accumulated inventory contains both perfect and defective items which are all sold with a free repair warranty (FRW) offer. Complete back ordering of shortages are taken into account. The purpose of this paper is to determine the optimal selling price and hence the optimal production lot size such that the expected profit is maximized. Design/methodology/approach The general model is discussed separately for both types of uniformly distributed selling price-sensitive demand pattern: additive type and multiplicative type. Numerical examples and graphical representations of the optimal solutions are provided to illustrate the models. Findings This paper helps the manager to manage future situations and it may be considered as a base work for the researchers to work in this direction. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of this model is to consider a single item for a single channel system. There are many correlated issues that need to be further investigated. The future study in this direction may include the consideration of multi-items, diverse demand pattern with different types of price distributions. Originality/value In the production inventory literature, plenty of articles are available considering imperfect production but none of them have considered selling price-sensitive stochastic demand where the sales price is random in character under an FRW offer.

  • Knowledge management of automobile system failures through development of
failure knowledge ontology from maintenance experience
    • Pages: 425 - 445
Abstract: Journal of Advances in Management Research, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 425-445, October 2017.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an ontological model of failure knowledge of automobile systems that will enhance the knowledge management of automobile system failures, which will help for design and maintenance of automobiles. Failure knowledge of automobile systems and components gained through maintenance and repair can mitigate future failures, if integrated in the design. This is an outcome of this paper. Design/methodology/approach A failure coding scheme is developed for assimilating various entities of automobile failure knowledge and an ontological model is developed for its systematic structuring and representation. The developed failure code is a combination of alphanumeric and numeric code that incorporates ingredients of the failure knowledge, which will help database management, with reduced data entry time and storage space. Findings The maintenance of automobiles not only brings back the systems into operating conditions but also convey a lot of information regarding the failures. This is a useful input to the designers in development of reliable and maintainable automobile systems. A knowledge base can be created for automobile systems/components failures from their maintenance and service experience. Research limitations/implications Developed ontological model of automobile failure knowledge gained through maintenance experience can be shared across automobile manufacturers and service providers. This would help in design improvements, with ease and efficient undertaking of maintenance activities. This paper proposes the conceptual ontology structure, which is populated with three cases of automobile maintenance. Originality/value This research work is a first attempt to develop an ontological model for automobile failures from their maintenance and service experience. The novelty of the work is in its explicit consideration of all knowledge related to failures and maintenance of automobile systems, with their coding and structuring.

  • Strategy-performance relationships
    • Pages: 446 - 465
Abstract: Journal of Advances in Management Research, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 446-465, October 2017.
Purpose The extant literature has challenged the original idea that pure strategy leads to superior performance. This shift has raised the question whether pure strategy is still superior to hybrid strategy' The purpose of this paper is to investigate the strategy-performance relationship in this context and the performance of pure, hybrid, and reactor strategies is compared. Design/methodology/approach Scoring method is used for identification of strategic types. ANOVA, univariate, and multivariate regression models are applied for empirical analysis using seven-year financial data of 307 Pakistani joint stock firms from 12 industries. Findings The results show that firms in Pakistan practice hybrid and reactor strategies rather than pure strategies. Overall, defending and analyzing strategies perform better than the prospecting strategies. However, the performance of the strategic types varies among industries and firm size. Strategy and firm size are the better predictors of firm performance. Originality/value The proposed methodology can be replicated to identify strategic groups and strategic orientations proposed by typological classifications when longitudinal studies are carried out. The process for identification of pure, hybrid, flexible, consistent, and reactor strategies is a key contribution to the literature.

  • Strategic management of multi-business portfolios in the public sector
    • Pages: 466 - 480
Abstract: Journal of Advances in Management Research, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 466-480, October 2017.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to adapt the traditional corporate portfolio management approach to the strategic management of multi-business portfolios in the public sector. Design/methodology/approach The approach presented in this paper is based on a research project conducted within the Defence Science and Technology Group, Australian Department of Defence. It was developed iteratively and incrementally over the course of one year with a reference group comprising 15 middle management representatives and several members of the senior management team. Findings The approach developed comprises a multi-stage process and an assessment framework designed to capture the complexity of the problem space, build a strategic narrative, and facilitate senior leadership decision-making. The process is aimed at eliciting the required information, promoting contestability of the results, ensuring appropriate consultation, and ultimately achieving senior leadership consensus on priorities. The assessment framework is used to assess and visualize the balance of organizational capabilities. Originality/value By synthesizing and visualizing information on past performance and future potential, the approach presented in this paper may be used to facilitate strategic decision-making by senior management in the public sector.

  • Carbon credit returns under EU ETS and its determinants: a multi-phase
           study
    • Pages: 481 - 526
Abstract: Journal of Advances in Management Research, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 481-526, October 2017.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to find out the best method for forecasting European Union Allowance (EUA) returns and determine its price determinants. The previous studies in this area have focused on a particular subset of EUA data and do not take care of the multicollinearities. The authors take EUA data from all three phases and the continuous series, adopt the principal component analysis (PCA) to eliminate multicollinearities and fit seven different homoscedastic models for a comprehensive analysis. Design/methodology/approach PCA is adopted to extract independent factors. Seven different linear regression and auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models are employed for forecasting EUA returns and isolating their price determinants. The seven models are then compared and the one with minimum (root mean square error is adjudged as the best model. Findings The best model for forecasting the EUA returns of all three phases is dynamic linear regression with lagged predictors and that for forecasting EUA continuous series is ARIMA errors. The latent factors such as switch to gas (STG) and clean spread (capturing the effects of the clean dark spread, clean spark spread, switching price and natural gas price), National Allocation Plan announcements events, energy variables, German Stock Exchange index and extreme temperature events have been isolated as the price determinants of EUA returns. Practical implications The current study contributes to effective carbon management by providing a quantitative framework for analyzing cap-and-trade schemes. Originality/value This study differs from earlier studies mainly in three aspects. First, instead of focusing on a particular subset of EUA data, it comprehensively analyses the data of all the three phases of EUA along with the EUA continuous series. Second, it expressly adopts PCA to eliminate multicollinearities, thereby reducing the error variance. Finally, it evaluates both linear and non-linear homoscedastic models incorporating lags of predictor variables to isolate the price determinants of EUA.

  • Integrated impact of highway infrastructure, labour productivity and
circular material consumption on Indian manufacturing growth
    • Pages: 527 - 542
Abstract: Journal of Advances in Management Research, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 527-542, October 2017.
Purpose Manufacturing sector growth continues to be topical in the growth journey of Indian economy. The purpose of this paper is to present the modelling and analysis of the combined impact of three key driving sub-systems on the Indian manufacturing growth. It has provided relevant insights and recommendations for its sustainable growth. Design/methodology/approach The impact of three key driving sub-systems: quality of highway-related infrastructure, manufacturing labour productivity and circular material-consumption in the growth of manufacturing has been studied. A System Dynamics (SD) based model to understand long-term implications of the policy variables on manufacturing growth has been developed. Five scenarios have been simulated for analysis. Findings Seven policy variables have been identified which have a significant impact on Indian manufacturing growth. Some relevant insights from the analysis of SD based system-behaviour have been provided which would facilitate the manufacturing growth. Research limitations/implications The paper has addressed the dynamics of only three sub-systems in the study of manufacturing growth. The other sub-systems which also have an impact on the manufacturing growth: Good governance, education quality and technology are recommended to be studied through SD based modelling. Practical implications Specific recommendations for accelerating the manufacturing growth have been made in the paper which has strong practical implications for growth of Indian economy. Social implications Manufacturing sector continues to have a significant impact on the prosperity of India. It facilitates in enhancement of employment and the micro-economic health aspects. Therefore, there is a need to understand the dynamics of the key policy variables affecting manufacturing growth which is very relevant for the society at large. Originality/value An application of the SD approach to analyse long-term implication of policy variables of three sub-systems that have a significant impact in manufacturing growth and five specific recommendations to the policy makers is the value-add.
