  • Detecting and presenting welcome-news for tourists from user reviews
    • Pages: 354 - 369
Abstract: International Journal of Web Information Systems, Volume 13, Issue 4, Page 354-369, November 2017.
Purpose Recently, people usually use the internet to obtain travel information, when they plan their travel. They especially want to obtain sightseeing spot information from reviews, but there are huge amounts of reviews of sightseeing spots. Users therefore cannot obtain important information from the reviews easily. As described herein, this paper aims to propose a system that automatically extracts and presents welcome news for sightseeing spots from reviews. This proposed Welcome-news is a “useful information” and “unexpected information” related to travel. Design/methodology/approach The flow for extracting Welcome-news from reviews is simple: A user inputs a sightseeing spot about which to get information; the system obtains reviews of the sightseeing spot and divides each sentence into reviews; the system extracts sentences including Welcome-news keyword(s), and the sentences become useful information; the system extracts unexpected information from useful information based on clustering, and it becomes Welcome-news; and the system presents all Welcome-news to the user. Findings This paper reports three findings: extraction of useful information for sightseeing spots based on Welcome-news keywords extracted by our experiment and using support vector machine (SVM); extraction of unexpected information for sightseeing spots by clustering; and automatic presentation of Welcome-news. Originality/value Numerous studies have extracted information from reviews based on some keywords. This proposed extraction of Welcome-news for travel not only uses keywords but also clusters based on topics. Furthermore, the proposed keywords include general keywords and unique keywords. The former appears for all kinds of sightseeing spots. The latter appears only for sightseeing spot. The authors extracted general keywords manually, and unique keywords using SVM.

  • Twitter user growth analysis based on diversities in posting activities
    • Pages: 370 - 386
Abstract: International Journal of Web Information Systems, Volume 13, Issue 4, Page 370-386, November 2017.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to clarify the characteristics of growth users over a long time to strategically collect a large amount of specific users’ tweets. Twitter reflects events and trends in users’ real lives because many of them post tweets related to their experiences. Many studies have succeeded in detecting events along with real-life information from a large amount of tweets by assuming users as social sensors. To collect a large amount of tweets based on specific users for successful Twitter studies, the authors have to know the characteristics of users who are active over long periods of time. Design/methodology/approach The authors explore the status of users who were active in 2012, and classify users into three statuses of Dead, Lock and Alive. Based on the differences between the numbers of tweets in 2012 and 2016, the authors further classify Alive users into three types of Eraser, Slumber and Growth. The authors analyze the characteristic feature values observed in each user behavior and provide interesting findings with each status/type based on Gaussian mixture model clustering and point-wise mutual information. Findings From their sophisticated experimental evaluations, the authors found that active users more easily dropped out than inactive users, and users who engaged in reciprocal communications often became Growth type. Also, the authors found that active users and users who were not retweeted by other users often became Eraser type. The authors’ proposed methods effectively predicted Growth/Eraser-type users compared with the logistic regression model. From these results, the authors clarified the effectiveness of five feature values per active hour to detect intended Twitter user growth for strategically collecting a large amount of tweets. Originality/value The authors focus on user growth prediction. To appropriately estimate users who have potential for growth, they collect a large amount of users and explore their status and growth after three years. The research quantitatively clarifies the characteristics of growth users by clustering using robust feature values and provides interesting findings obtained by analysis. After that, the authors propose an effective prediction method for growth users and evaluate the effectiveness of their proposed method.

  • Dynamic SAX parameter estimation for time series
    • Pages: 387 - 404
Abstract: International Journal of Web Information Systems, Volume 13, Issue 4, Page 387-404, November 2017.
Purpose The paper aims to estimate the segment size and alphabet size of Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX). In SAX, time series data are divided into a set of equal-sized segments. Each segment is represented by its mean value and mapped with an alphabet, where the number of adopted symbols is called alphabet size. Both parameters control data compression ratio and accuracy of time series mining tasks. Besides, optimal parameters selection highly depends on different application and data sets. In fact, these parameters are iteratively selected by analyzing entire data sets, which limits handling of the huge amount of time series and reduces the applicability of SAX. Design/methodology/approach The segment size is estimated based on Shannon sampling theorem (autoSAXSD_S) and adaptive hierarchical segmentation (autoSAXSD_M). As for the alphabet size, it is focused on how mean values of all the segments are distributed. The small number of alphabet size is set for large distribution to easily distinguish the difference among segments. Findings Experimental evaluation using University of California Riverside (UCR) data sets shows that the proposed schemes are able to select the parameters well with high classification accuracy and show comparable efficiency in comparison with state-of-the-art methods, SAX and auto_iSAX. Originality/value The originality of this paper is the way to find out the optimal parameters of SAX using the proposed estimation schemes. The first parameter segment size is automatically estimated on two approaches and the second parameter alphabet size is estimated on the most frequent average (mean) value among segments.

  • An evaluation of uplift mapping languages
    • Pages: 405 - 424
Abstract: International Journal of Web Information Systems, Volume 13, Issue 4, Page 405-424, November 2017.
Purpose This paper aims to evaluate the state-of-the-art in CSV uplift tools. Based on this evaluation, a method that incorporates data transformations into uplift mapping languages by means of functions is proposed and evaluated. Typically, tools that map non-resource description framework (RDF) data into RDF format rely on the technology native to the source of the data when data transformation is required. Depending on the data format, data manipulation can be performed using underlying technology, such as relational database management system (RDBMS) for relational databases or XPath for XML. For CSV/Tabular data, there is no such underlying technology, and instead, it requires either a transformation of source data into another format or pre/post-processing techniques. Design/methodology/approach To evaluate the state-of-the-art in CSV uplift tools, the authors present a comparison framework and have applied it to such tools. A key feature evaluated in the comparison framework is data transformation functions. They argue that existing approaches for transformation functions are complex – in that a number of steps and tools are required. The proposed method, FunUL, in contrast, defines functions independent of the source data being mapped into RDF, as resources within the mapping itself. Findings The approach was evaluated using two typical real-world use cases. The authors have compared how well our approach and others (that include transformation functions as part of the uplift mapping) could implement an uplift mapping from CSV/Tabular into RDF. This comparison indicates that the authors’ approach performs well for these use cases. Originality/value This paper presents a comparison framework and applies it to the state-of-the-art in CSV uplift tools. Furthermore, the authors describe FunUL, which, unlike other related work, defines functions as resources within the uplift mapping itself, integrating data transformation functions and mapping definitions. This makes the generation of RDF from source data transparent and traceable. Moreover, as functions are defined as resources, these can be reused multiple times within mappings.

  • Set of tuples expansion by example with reliability
    • Pages: 425 - 444
Abstract: International Journal of Web Information Systems, Volume 13, Issue 4, Page 425-444, November 2017.
Purpose This paper aims to focus on the design of algorithms and techniques for an effective set expansion. A tool that finds and extracts candidate sets of tuples from the World Wide Web was designed and implemented. For instance, when a given user provides , , as seeds, our system returns tuples composed of countries with their corresponding capital cities and currency names constructed from content extracted from Web pages retrieved. Design/methodology/approach The seeds are used to query a search engine and to retrieve relevant Web pages. The seeds are also used to infer wrappers from the retrieved pages. The wrappers, in turn, are used to extract candidates. The Web pages, wrappers, seeds and candidates, as well as their relationships, are vertices and edges of a heterogeneous graph. Several options for ranking candidates from PageRank to truth finding algorithms were evaluated and compared. Remarkably, all vertices are ranked, thus providing an integrated approach to not only answer direct set expansion questions but also find the most relevant pages to expand a given set of seeds. Findings The experimental results show that leveraging the truth finding algorithm can indeed improve the level of confidence in the extracted candidates and the sources. Originality/value Current approaches on set expansion mostly support sets of atomic data expansion. This idea can be extended to the sets of tuples and extract relation instances from the Web given a handful set of tuple seeds. A truth finding algorithm is also incorporated into the approach and it is shown that it can improve the confidence level in the ranking of both candidates and sources in set of tuples expansion.

  • MovRec: a personalized movie recommendation system for children based on
           online movie features
    • Pages: 445 - 470
Abstract: International Journal of Web Information Systems, Volume 13, Issue 4, Page 445-470, November 2017.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to suggest suitable movies for children among the various multimedia selections available these days. Multimedia have a significant impact on the social and psychological development of children who are often explored to inappropriate materials, including movies that are either accessible online or through other multimedia channels. Even though not all movies are bad, there are negative effects of offensive languages, violence and sexuality as exhibited in movies. Parents and guidance of children need all the help they can get to promote the healthy use of movies these days. Design/methodology/approach To offer parents appropriate movies of interest to their youths, the authors have developed MovRec, a personalized movie recommender for children, which is designed to provide educational and suitable entertaining opportunities for children. MovRec determines the appealingness of a movie for a particular user based on its children-appropriate score computed by using the backpropagation model, pre-defined category using latent Dirichlet allocation, its predicted rating using matrix factorization and sentiments based on its users’ reviews, which along with its like/dislike count and genres, yield the features considered by MovRec. MovRec combines these features by using the CombMNZ model to rank and recommend movies. Findings The performance evaluation of MovRec clearly demonstrates its effectiveness and its recommended movies are highly regarded by its users. Originality/value Unlike Amazon and other online movie recommendation systems, such as Common Sense Media, Internet Movie Database and TasteKid, MovRec is unique, as to the best of the authors’ knowledge, MovRec is the first personalized children movie recommender.

  • Service composition in the multi cloud environment
    • Pages: 471 - 484
Abstract: International Journal of Web Information Systems, Volume 13, Issue 4, Page 471-484, November 2017.
Purpose User requests over the cloud are not achievable with one single service, multiple services need to be executed to fulfill what a user asks for. Typically, such services are composed and presented as one global service. Moreover, the same operation can be achieved by multiple services available at different clouds, which can result in different possibilities in composing them. This paper aims to decrease the number of clouds involved in the composition process, so that user requests are satisfied with minimal cost (communication costs, execution time and financial charges). Design/methodology/approach This paper investigates the use of an intelligent water drops (IWDs) optimization-based algorithm, and an integer linear programming model to optimize the number of cloud bases involved in the composition process. A comparison of the solutions found by these two techniques is presented in the paper. Findings The obtained results show that the number of cloud bases can be decreased without affecting user satisfaction. Originality/value The paper is a first attempt to use the IWDs algorithm for service composition, tested with big-size data.

  • Deferred repair of inconsistencies resulting from retroactive updates of
           temporal XML currency data
    • Pages: 485 - 519
Abstract: International Journal of Web Information Systems, Volume 13, Issue 4, Page 485-519, November 2017.
Purpose A temporal XML database could become an inconsistent model of the represented reality after a retroactive update. Such an inconsistency state must be repaired by performing corrective actions (e.g. payment of arrears after a retroactive salary increase) either immediately (i.e. at inconsistency detection time) or in a deferred manner, at one or several chosen repair times according to application requirements. The purpose of this work is to deal with deferred and multi-step repair of detected data inconsistencies. Design/methodology/approach A general approach for deferred and stepwise repair of inconsistencies that result from retroactive updates of currency data (e.g. the salary of an employee) in a valid-time or bitemporal XML database is proposed. The approach separates the inconsistency repairs from the inconsistency detection phase and deals with the execution of corrective actions, which also take into account enterprise’s business rules that define some relationships between data. Findings Algorithms, methods and support data structures for deferred and multi-step inconsistency repair of currency data are presented. The feasibility of the approach has been shown through the development and testing of a system prototype, named Deferred-Repair Manager. Originality/value The proposed approach implements a new general and flexible strategy for repairing detected inconsistencies in a deferred manner and possibly in multiple steps, according to varying user’s requirements and to specifications which are customary in the real world.
