  • Control or chaos: impact of workarounds on internal controls
    • Pages: 230 - 244
Abstract: International Journal of Accounting & Information Management, Volume 26, Issue 2, Page 230-244, May 2018.
Purpose There have been many studies that investigated the causes of workarounds, but there is less research on their outcomes, such as the impact on internal control. This study aims to investigate the use of workarounds by a multinational organization that implemented SAP about 10 years ago, and how those workarounds affected internal controls. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative study is performed by analyzing interviews with company personnel for a multinational organization. Employees selected for interviews are primarily users of SAP’s accounting functions. Findings Workarounds have significant impacts on the internal controls over financial reporting. Workarounds cause compensating controls to be implemented, which are often manual in nature, and decrease the organizational efficiency and effectiveness. Research limitations/implications Workarounds become integrated into an organization’s activities to meet its business needs. This research raises questions to determine when maintaining organizational efficiency and control outweighs the need to provide customer service and other business needs. Practical implications Companies should consider whether their business processes can be modified to ensure that they can be handled within the enterprise system. In addition, the number of compensating controls required due to workarounds may decrease the organizational efficiency expected from having an enterprise resource planning system to ensure the integrity of financial information. Originality/value This paper moves beyond finding the causes of workarounds, and expands what is known about workarounds and their impact on an organization. An important contribution of this study is to consider the intersection of workarounds, ERP systems and internal controls.

  • Impairment reversals: unbiased reporting or earnings management
    • Pages: 245 - 271
Abstract: International Journal of Accounting & Information Management, Volume 26, Issue 2, Page 245-271, May 2018.
Purpose This paper aims to provide evidence that will inform the convergence debate regarding accounting standards. The authors assess the ability of impairment reversals allowed under International Accounting Standard 36 but disallowed by the Financial Accounting Standards Board to provide useful information about a company. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a sample of 182 Malaysian firms that reversed impairment charges and a matched sample of firms which chose not to reverse their impairments. Further analysis examines if reversing an impairment charge is associated with motivations for and evidence of earnings management. Findings The authors find no evidence that the reversal of an impairment charge marks a company out as managing contemporaneous earnings. However, they document evidence that firms with high levels of abnormal accruals and weak corporate governance avoid earnings decline by reversing previously recognized impairments. In addition, companies that have engaged in big baths as evidenced by high accumulated impairment balances and prior changes in top management, use impairment reversals to avoid earnings declines. Research limitations/implications The results of this study support both the informative and opportunistic hypotheses of impairment reversal reporting using Financial Reporting Standard 136. Practical implications The results also demonstrate how companies that use impairment reversals opportunistically can be identified. Originality/value The results support IASB’s approach to the reversal of impairments. They also provide novel evidence as to how companies exploit a cookie-jar reserve created by a prior big bath opportunistically.

  • The incremental informativeness of public subsidiary earnings
    • Pages: 272 - 290
Abstract: International Journal of Accounting & Information Management, Volume 26, Issue 2, Page 272-290, May 2018.
Purpose This study aims to investigate how holding public subsidiaries affects the information environment of consolidated entities in Germany. Design/methodology/approach The sample consists of German consolidated entities that are traded on major German stock exchanges over the fiscal years 2005-2012 and hold subsidiaries with public common equity. The informativeness of earnings, defined as the association between earnings and returns, is used to investigate how holding public subsidiaries affects the information environment of consolidated entities. Findings Findings suggest that public subsidiary earnings are incrementally informative about consolidated entity returns beyond both consolidated and segment earnings reported by consolidated entities in Germany. An investigation into the factors that affect the incremental informativeness of public subsidiary earnings reveals that public subsidiary earnings are more incrementally informative when, compared to the consolidated entity, they are relatively large, have dissimilar growth prospects and are from the same country (i.e. Germany). Practical implications These findings suggest that this disclosure is useful to investors and that this type of disclosure could be valuable to adopt in other countries that do not have this disclosure requirement. Originality/value These findings contribute to the streams of literature that: investigate ways that regulators can improve the information environment of corporations, compare the informativeness of accounting measures and investigate the informativeness of subsidiary information.

  • Awareness of intellectual capital among bank executives in India: a survey
    • Pages: 291 - 310
Abstract: International Journal of Accounting & Information Management, Volume 26, Issue 2, Page 291-310, May 2018.
Purpose This paper aims to explore the awareness of terminology related to intellectual capital (IC) among executives of Indian banks and the sources in which they mostly find IC-related terminology. The paper also explores relative and specific contributions of each selected source of information in creating IC awareness among bank executives in India and determines difference among the executives from the public and private sector. Design/methodology/approach This research paper follows a survey-based approach to capture the perceptions of Indian bank managers working middle and top management across different banks. Regression analysis and ANOVA were applied to data from 166 responses. Findings The study finds that IC awareness among Indian banking executives is reasonably high and is equally spread across the three sub-categories of capital (external capital, human capital and internal capital), though the relative awareness of external capital is on the higher side. However, the sources of awareness of IC terminology differ among executives from the public- and private-sector banks. Research limitations/implications The sample was limited to middle and top managers in the Indian banking industry and suffers from the usual limitations of survey-based research such as the design of the survey instrument and the personal biases of the respondents. Some limitations may also have arisen because of the definitions of IC elements adopted by this study. Originality/value This research adds a new dimension to the IC research by exploring the practical application and awareness of IC that deviates from traditional annual report-based disclosure and valuation studies. No existing literature has examined the survey-based awareness study, particularly on the banking industry. This paper provides a foundation for future studies that examine the operational awareness and application of IC in the service industries.

  • The effect of culture on accounting conservatism during adoption of IFRS
           in the EU
    • Pages: 311 - 330
Abstract: International Journal of Accounting & Information Management, Volume 26, Issue 2, Page 311-330, May 2018.
Purpose This paper aims to examine the impact of culture on accounting conservatism during transition to international standards. Design/methodology/approach The sample used in this analysis consists of 15 countries of the European Union that have adopted International financial reporting standards (IFRS) pursuing Regulation N° 1606/2002. The study covers the 2000-2010 period. Two conservatism measures are used, the Basu (1997) measure to account for conditional conservatism and the accruals measure to account for unconditional conservatism. To test the impact of culture, the six dimensions of Hofstede (1980, ) are used. Findings The results of the analysis show that variation of conditional conservatism is influenced by the six cultural dimensions. However, unconditional conservatism is only affected by power distance. Originality/value The results of the study are interesting and provide a better understanding of the adoption of IFRS worldwide. The role of culture in explaining accounting practices after adopting a single set of accounting standards is particularly highlighted.
