  • Development of trust in the CEO–chair relationship

      Abstract: Baltic Journal of Management, Volume 12, Issue 3, July 2017.
      Purpose This study explores trust development in the dyadic relationship of CEO and Chair of the Board. Design/methodology/approach A narrative approach is adopted to examine the meanings that CEOs and Chairpersons give to trust in their relationship, and to explore trust as an evolving phenomenon that can increase or decline over the course of the relationship. The data include 16 CEO-Chair dyads from Finnish limited companies. Findings The results suggest that trust may exist on different levels and evolve in various ways during the course of the relationship. Integrity and agreement on company strategy are proposed to form the foundation for trust in the CEO-Chair relationship, whereas ability and benevolence are necessary for trust to develop to a higher level. Research limitations/implications Studying trust development based on data generated at one point of time and in only one country are the major limitations of the study. Practical implications It is proposed that the level of trust influences value creation in the relationship. Originality/value The study adds to the limited number of previous studies on the CEO-Chair relationship and contributes to the literature on trust development by making visible the viewpoint of both partners, and the meaning of the different components of trust.

  • Do you feel younger enough to choose nostalgic products? Exploring the
           role of age identity in nostalgic purchasing behavior

      Abstract: Baltic Journal of Management, Volume 12, Issue 3, July 2017.
      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the links between consumer age identity, nostalgia and preferences for nostalgic products. Design/methodology/approach A theoretical framework is proposed based on integrating nostalgia and age identity as parts of an individual’s self-concept. Research results are obtained from the empirical study of a sample of 313 consumers in Lithuania and 5 interviews with experts in marketing industry. Findings Employing Structural Equation Modelling analysis, the current study provides initial evidence that the bigger the discrepancy between one’s chronological and cognitive age, the more nostalgic products one buys. Furthermore, age identity acts as a better predictor for purchasing nostalgic products than nostalgia. Originality/value The current paper explores the impact of nostalgia and age identity on consumer purchasing behavior which is not addressed in literature before. By evaluating the role of nostalgia and age identity, the study offers a deeper understanding of consumer behavior in nostalgia contexts. Moreover, unlike in most previous studies on nostalgia and age identity, it is focused on actual rather than intended behavior. The present study is also relevant for current marketers as the findings provide additional information and recommendations for choosing appropriate marketing and communication strategies.

      Purpose Based on a dynamic capability view, this study explores whether market orientation (external) and learning orientation (internal) facilitate internationalizing SMEs’ global dynamic capabilities (GDCs) – i.e., their global marketing and product-design capabilities – and promote firm performance. Design/methodology/approach Empirical data is randomly selected from Taiwanese internationalizing SMEs, yielding 206 valid responses. Informants’ (CEOs, vice presidents, senior managers) knowledge about and shouldering of firm responsibilities are explored. Findings A significant increase in global marketing and product-design capabilities is found to affect firm performance. Market and learning orientation positively influence GDCs, which increase firm performance. Furthermore, learning and market orientation support GDCs’ development. Research limitations/implications The sample is reasonably diverse in terms of demographics including firm location, size, industry, and market type. Disaggregation results are generally robust regarding model parameters. However, future research should target different countries to assess result generalizability. Practical implications The findings reveal two practical implications for managers. First, successful GDCs help firms spread the costs of designing products or components across many contexts and to offer appealing products to consumers worldwide. Second, it is important that managers foster development of market and learning orientations. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature in two ways. First, by conceptualizing GDCs of internationalizing SMEs, dynamic capability literature is expanded based on a global context. Second, the complexity of extending dynamic capability literature into internationalizing SMEs may arise from the fact that internationalizing SMEs, as separate and living entities, devise their own organizational culture, which significantly affects their GDC development.

  • Linking intangible resources and export performance: the role of
           entrepreneurial orientation and dynamic capabilities

      Purpose This research draws upon the Resource-Based View (RBV) and the Dynamic Capabilities View’s (DCV) premise that a firm’s resources and capabilities determine competitive advantage. Specifically, we develop and test a model entailing simultaneously the impact of intangible resources; and dynamic capabilities and entrepreneurial orientation on export performance. Design/methodology/approach Therefore we developed a study based on a survey of 265 Portuguese exporting companies. Data were submitted to a multivariate statistical analysis and a linear regression model was performed in order to predict the influence of the intangible resources on export performance. The structural equations model was used for this purpose. Findings The results show that export performance is directly impacted by dynamic capabilities and entrepreneurial orientation. However, intangible resources do not have a significant direct impact on entrepreneurial orientation; they do have an indirect effect through the mediation of dynamic capabilities. These findings highlight the catalyst role of dynamic capabilities and entrepreneurial orientation, leveraging the role of intangible resources as antecedents of export performance. These findings are valuable inputs for exporting managers and public entities. Research limitations/implications Originality/value While previous authors have attempted to analyse certain aspects of this process (linkage between intangible resources and export performance), this research developed a framework that combines these ones with entrepreneurial orientation and dynamic capabilities.

  • Corporate political activity and environmental sustainability disclosure:
           the case of Chinese companies

      Purpose This study takes on a corporate political activity (CPA) perspective to investigate how CPA affects environmental sustainability disclosure among firms in China and whether the disclosure level varies across ownership structures and environmental sensitivity statuses. Design/methodology/approach The sample comprises 652 corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports released by firms in China during 2008-2010. Data is coded through a content analysis procedure before being analyzed using regression analysis. Findings We find a significant and positive association between CPA and environmental sustainability disclosure. However, the effect of CPA on environmental sustainability disclosure is significantly negative among firms in the environmentally sensitive industries (ESIs) and privately owned enterprises (POEs). More specifically, a firm’s environmental disclosure level is lower when the proportion of board members with a significant status, such as party chief of the Communist Party, is higher among firms in ESIs and POEs. This implies that firms with guanxi (i.e. Chinese-specific CPA) are more likely to be free from trouble. Originality/value This empirical study offers important evidence on the fulfillment of environmental sustainability policies and the effectiveness of regulatory controls that China has used in the development towards a low-carbon economy.

  • The business model and intellectual capital in the value creation of
           firms: a literature review

      Purpose This work aims to analyze BM and IC of a firm with a focus on their common elements. The common basis in the field of strategic management for these two concepts are, among others, RBV, KBV, ICBV, dynamic capabilities and configurational approach. It indicates areas in which these two concepts can benefit from each other, e.g. in classification of components, their configuration or dynamic approach. This general review examines the following research questions: What are the common concepts for the business model and intellectual capital? What are their common components? What does the dynamic approach to IC and BM mean? Design/methodology/approach The Web of ScienceTM Core Collection database was used for the period 1975 – 2014 and Scopus® (Elsevier). The Scopus search covered the years 1985-2015. These databases were selected because they offer a reliable overview of historical data regarding journals, articles, and citation impact. The key filter criteria were the presence of the phrases “business model” or “intellectual capital” in the article title, abstract and keywords in order to narrow down the selection to the most appropriate results for the research area. Findings This paper investigates two concepts from the point of view of their underpinnings in management, definitions and components, as well as value creation. Analysis of the foundations in management allows to present a cohesive model, which depicts a comprehensive approach to analysis of these two concepts. Many common elements have been identified and investigated. Originality/value First, it provides an indication of the common underpinnings of the analyzed concepts within the framework of strategic management and proposals for their development towards resource, knowledge, and intellectual capital accumulation, combination and heterogeneity based views. Second, an analysis of the business model and intellectual capital components, showing common elements between them. Third, a description and analysis of dynamic view of business model and intellectual capital components in a value creation context.

  • Candidates’ attractiveness in selection decisions: a laboratory
           experiment

      Purpose Recruiters in today’s organizations, through social networks, have the opportunity to see a candidate’s overall figure, and from this, they gain a first impression of their personalities which in turn affects their decisions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the biasing role of candidates’ attractiveness – in facial and bodily terms – on perceived main personality features (i.e. core evaluations (CEs)) in selection decisions. Design/methodology/approach An experimental study involving professional recruiters (n=150) was conducted. Participants were asked to rate bodily attractiveness (using the objectification construct), CEs, facial attractiveness and hiring scores of six candidates for an administrative position; then, a moderated mediation model was tested. Findings This study suggests that recruiters’ perception of candidates’ CEs mediates the relationship between objectification (i.e. body attractiveness) and the assigned hiring score, while facial attractiveness amplifies or reduces the effect of objectification on CEs. Originality/value The value added of this contribution lies in studying the biasing mechanism of candidates’ overall attractiveness (facial and bodily) and its effects on the perceived core personality features.

  • Clients and cases: ambiguity and the division of labour in professional
           service firms

      Purpose By drawing on a detailed case study of the work of tax consultants, the purpose of this paper is to develop a more detailed understanding of the role of ambiguity in professional work, and its relationship to the division of labour in professional service firms (PSFs). Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a three-year, longitudinal interpretive case study comprising 42 interviews, supplemented by observations and document data. Findings The research determines that processes of “obfuscation” and “privatisation” separate client work from case work. This maintains a division of labour between junior and senior professionals, which in turn facilitates financial leverage. The findings indicate that a more nuanced view on the role and origins of ambiguity is needed; particularly the role ambiguity plays in the division of labour. While inherent in professional work, ambiguity is also an effect of the way work processes are organised in order to obtain leverage. Research limitations/implications The research is based on a case study. Therefore, the paper explores its topic in empirical detail, but at the same time calls for exploring the topic in different contexts. The paper encourages further research on the role ambiguity plays being constituted by structural arrangements, and on the way the core of professionalism is inverted by the division of labour. The paper highlights the value of detailed empirical approaches for understanding professional work. Practical implications The paper draws attention to the way ambiguity becomes a part in sustaining a division of labour among professional workers, and to the importance of this in maintaining financial leverage as well as in creating a precarious work situation for junior professionals. Social implications The paper raises concerns about the way professional work is legitimated in society as opposed to how it is constructed in PSFs. Originality/value The paper challenges prevalent notions of professional work as ambiguous, offering instead a way of engaging with professional work processes in detail, theoretically and methodologically. Traditional assumptions about the division of labour and the “core” of professional work are problematized, and traditional assumptions about ambiguity as a cause of specific structural arrangements are questioned.

  • The role of a predictive analytics project initiator in the integration of
           financial and operational forecasts

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the initiation of accounting information system projects. Specifically, it examines the role of the predictive analytics (PA) project initiator in the integration of financial and operational sales forecasts. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a field study method to address the studied phenomenon in eight Finnish companies that have recently adopted PA systems. The data are primarily based on 19 interviews in the companies and five interviews with the PA consultants. Findings The authors found that initiators appear to play a major role regarding the degree of integration of financial and operational sales forecasts. The initiators from an accounting function have a tendency to pay more attention to the integration than the representatives from other functions, such as operations and sales. Practical implications The study also makes a practical contribution to companies in showing and discussing the important role of the accounting department as an initiator of a project if the target is to achieve a tight coupling of financial and operational forecast figures, i.e., “one set of numbers”. Originality/value Even though companies have increasingly adopted PA systems in recent years, we still know little about how the initiation affects the design of accounting information systems overall. The central contribution of the paper, therefore, is to show that if a PA project is initiated by the accounting department, data integration becomes more likely. It contributes also to the discussion related to the appropriateness of data integration in the context of forecasting.

  • Contested takeovers of family firms and socioemotional wealth: a case
           study

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of the importance of socioemotional wealth (SEW) to family firms in Poland viewed through the lens of the events surrounding the first hostile takeover bid of the post-communist era on the Warsaw Stock Exchange when the clothing company Vistula & Wólczanka (V&W) made an unsolicited, leveraged bid for the family-controlled jewelry company W. Kruk. Design/methodology/approach The 2008 takeover and its aftermath are described in the context of the corporate governance and legal environment in Poland. The case study events demonstrate the connection between firm behavior and SEW theory. Findings After the acquisition of W. Kruk by V&W, the Kruk family purchased stock in the newly named Vistula Group and gained influence over the supervisory board in concert with a business ally, eventually wresting back control of the company in the style of a Pac-Man “defense.” The case study illustrates the importance of SEW in family firm takeovers. Research limitations/implications The case study design has limitations for generalizability. Nevertheless the research highlights the important role of SEW preservation in understanding the market for corporate control of listed family firms in Poland. Practical implications Understanding the reaction by family firms to takeover bids requires recognition that there is a tradeoff between financial and SEW considerations, not just financial gains and losses. Originality/value The case study demonstrates the importance of SEW to family firms and suggests that the balance of power in takeovers on the Polish stock market rests with incumbent management.

  • The effect of personality on salespeople’s information gathering

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test the direct effects of intrinsic motivation, perceived information value, activity perception, perceived organizational support, and adaptive selling on the propensity to collect market information and how locus of control (LOC) moderates these effects. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected using a cross-sectional design with a web-based survey. The respondents were business-to-business salespeople. All relationships were tested by regression modeling. Findings Support was found for most direct effects, and LOC moderated all supported direct effects. Thus, adding LOC as a moderator will increase the understanding of what motivates salespeople to gather information. Research limitations/implications This study shows that using the theoretical construct of personality as a moderator increases the understanding of what motivates salespeople to collect information. Practical implications Sales leaders use different motivational tools to ensure that their sales forces focus on important tasks, but the responses to a specific motivational tool may differ among salespeople. The most prominent managerial contribution of the present study is a possible explanation of why salespeople differ in information collection even when the same motivational tools are used. Originality/value Several researchers have focused on what drives salespeople to collect, share, and use market information at the individual-level perspective, but despite the long history of studies of the relationship between motivation and personality, focus on the effects of individual differences is lacking. This paper addresses this gap and shows how personality differences have a moderating effect on the propensity of salespeople to collect market information.

  • Ownership structure and company performance: a panel study from Poland

      Purpose The purpose of the paper is to investigate the links between company ownership structure and financial performance in the context of the largest Central European stock market. Using the framework of agency theory, the authors address the question of the expropriation effect by dominant owners and the effect of collusion between shareholders of different types on company performance. Design/methodology/approach The authors test hypotheses on the relations between ownership concentration and the involvement of different shareholders (state, CEO, industry and financial investors) vs return on assets (ROA). The authors adopt the panel model controlling for endogeneity and sector of operation and analyze the data from the unique sample of 495 Polish non-financial firms listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in years 2005-2014 with a total of 3,203 observations. Findings The authors identify a negative correlation between ownership concentration by the majority shareholder and ROA, which corresponds with the expropriation rationale of blockholders. The authors also observe negative effects due to ownership concentration by the second largest shareholder, supporting the notion of collusion. The results show that ownership by industry investors is associated with a higher ROA. Ownership by the CEO, state and financial investors proves to have no statistically significant effect on performance. Originality/value The paper further develops the nature of ownership-performance relations in the specific economic context of a post-transition, emerging European stock market, weak external corporate governance mechanisms, insufficient investor protection and significant concentration of share ownership. The results add to the understanding of monitoring vs expropriation effects by large owners and the collusion between different types of shareholders.
