  • Game-based learning considerations for instructional designers
    • Pages: 235 - 241
Abstract: On the Horizon, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 235-241, September 2017.
Purpose Instructional design students’ training may not include game-based learning (GBL). This paper aims to review the literature on GBL to determine the role of the instructional designer who is interested in GBL approaches to enhance learning especially for the novice learner. Design/methodology/approach The methodology for determining the instructional designers’ roles is based on the comparison of game-based and traditional instructional design and the identification of what is needed to aid instructors and designers in development and evaluation of GBL products. Findings The literature reveals that GBL shows learning potential. The existence of slim empirical research cannot posit GBL effectiveness in general, within specific disciplines, or with specific learner types. If GBL is to be effectively included in instructional design, the instructional designers, game designers and educational stakeholders need to collaborate to understand and combine optimal design features that meet both game and education objectives and to develop a common nomenclature so that research and its findings can be effectively communicated. Originality/value This review identifies specific digital game-based strategies that align with the learning goals sought in instructional design, differences between game and instructional design and steps needed for the instructional designer to bridge gaps in knowledge or practice between educators, researchers, game designers and instructional designers. These identifications may aid all GBL stakeholders in development of future GBL.

  • eStout: a digital learning environment program case study
    • Pages: 242 - 249
Abstract: On the Horizon, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 242-249, September 2017.
Purpose This paper aims to discuss the evolution of a digital learning environment in higher education as a result of ongoing data collection and evaluation. Design/methodology/approach The manuscript is based on a digital learning environment intervention at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and is informed by evaluation data collected from student and faculty surveys annually between 2002 and 2016. Survey themes changed annually based on student/faculty concerns and interests, and program management used this feedback to make modifications to program scope and offerings. Findings The digital learning environment at the University of Wisconsin-Stout has been effective in providing faculty and students with the tools they need to be successful. This success is largely due to the ongoing commitment to data collection and evaluation at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and has ensured that the digital learning environment stays modern and adaptive. Originality/value This manuscript is the culmination of 15 years of ongoing evaluation practice and thus provides valuable best practices and lessons learned for educators/educational institutions hoping to improve or create their own digital learning environment.

  • Novel games can come from novice game makers
    • Pages: 250 - 252
Abstract: On the Horizon, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 250-252, September 2017.
Purpose This paper aims to describe how a novice to game design pushed theory about what makes a good game. Design/methodology/approach The game in question was developed in Twine for an introductory undergraduate course in interactive media. Findings It featured very little player agency, which ironically served to give players a richer experience. Originality/value That a novice could create something deeply personal that butted against conventional game design guidelines highlights the importance of opening game design up to as broad an audience as possible.

  • Instructional design talks to game design
    • Pages: 253 - 259
Abstract: On the Horizon, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 253-259, September 2017.
Purpose This paper aims to identify successful game strategies that are used in digital video games and match those strategies to practices that may be incorporated in instructional design to gamify the learning experience. Design/methodology/approach The identification of successful strategies is based on literature explaining gamification and game strategies. Examples and suggestions of gamification are included from scholars, business leaders and actual practices. Findings The successful game strategies identified can be transferred into the learning environment without the inclusion of video games. Strategies identified support learner competence, relatedness and autonomy and encourage instructional designers or instructors to examine game play, realize how play can be used to provide more meaningful experiences to learners and rethink assessments. Originality/value The identified game elements are supported by motivation theory. These identifications offer instructional designers a list of game elements from which they may refer when designing in the future.

Abstract: On the Horizon, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 260-266, September 2017.
Purpose Educational mathematics game models tend to be simplistic because they are target-oriented. This paper aims to show how game models that facilitate discovery and analysis can be derived from successful implementations already existing in the popular culture. Design/methodology/approach Based loosely on Rivera’s Toward a visually-oriented school mathematics curriculum, the analysis combines perspectives from psychology, the graphic arts and object-oriented technology to illustrate the depth and breadth of mathematics in a popular commercial. Findings This paper offers an cross-disciplinary justification for expanding curricular resources beyond traditional alphanumeric metonymies. Illustrations show the mathematical concepts underlying the commercial structure as well as the multimodal, sensuous, semiotic aspects. Research limitations/implications This analytical approach is intended to precede development of game mechanics. It is focused on expanding the psychology of mathematics beyond the metonymic, canned problem approach and toward more dynamic examples. Practical implications Games based on real examples from popular culture can provide learners with an answer to the following question: When will I ever use this in real life' Social implications The philosophy here is that learners will be excited and challenged by engaging real-life mathematics. The issue has always been that people cannot imagine what they have never seen, and this approach gives them a way to see the math in action, answering Rivera’s question, “Can we make a game based on visualizing the mathematics” with a resounding “Yes!” Originality/value This paper offers a fresh approach to designing games for learning mathematics.

  • Global virtual teams’ education: experiential learning in the
           classroom
    • Pages: 267 - 285
Abstract: On the Horizon, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 267-285, September 2017.
Purpose This paper aims to examine how students can learn how to work in multi-cultural global virtual teams in a classroom-based setting using experiential learning. The students from two graduate programs in France and Japan were given relevant reading materials, individual and joint team assignments on virtual team work and were asked to evaluate their work using previously identified global virtual team key success factors. Design/methodology/approach Text-mining and co-word analyses of students’ assignments, and correlations of keyword frequencies with student culture scores provide insights on how students first experience this novel setting, raising their awareness and providing them skills for future application in an organizational setting. Findings The process experienced by virtual student teams has many similarities with the team formation stage in virtual teams in organizational settings. Such experiential learning is useful for global virtual team education, as students will have already experienced and solved typical challenges in a safer non-work-related setting. Research limitations/implications This study is based on a small sample of respondents and therefore presents inherent limitations in terms of significance and generalizability. Originality/value The rise of information and communication technologies has facilitated the creation of new approaches for coordinating work and, subsequently, for new collaborative organizational forms. Little research has been conducted to address education or training for these new and essential forms of collaboration.

  • Embedding innovation pedagogy in teaching journalism
    • Pages: 286 - 292
Abstract: On the Horizon, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 286-292, September 2017.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test how to integrate innovation pedagogy into journalism and information and communication technology (ICT) teaching while creating a new product for a national media industry. The objectives of the study were to create a new joint course model in which students from different degree programmes would learn and create products and services together in three different stages: networked and collaborative learning, group-based learning and individual learning. Design/methodology/approach Innovation pedagogy is a practically oriented method and can be used for doing applied research. This new learning approach defines how knowledge is assimilated, produced and used while innovating. The research focus is on applied research, and one vital aim is to enhance students’ ability to participate in research and development activities with businesses and other organisations in society. Findings The learning outcomes based on learning at all stages, i.e. individual, group and networks, were successfully achieved, and a new course model was created. However, the model needs further development. Originality/value Innovation pedagogy is a new learning approach. Innovation has been a buzz word in education for at least for a decade – some universities have even embedded innovative thinking throughout their curricula, leading to a new learning approach called innovation pedagogy. Could innovation pedagogy help us to achieve better learning outcomes' Do journalists really need innovation competences' Could journalists and ICT students study together' To answer these questions, the authors began an experiment that uses innovation pedagogy.

  • Innovation in times of uncertainty
    • Pages: 293 - 308
Abstract: On the Horizon, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 293-308, September 2017.
Purpose This paper (published in two consecutive issues of On the Horizon) aims to contextualize research on games for learning by describing the current drivers of innovation in learning technologies situated within broader trends in open educational publishing. Design/methodology/approach The paper begins with an overview of changes, driven largely by technology in educational technology and publishing. Using massively open online courseware as an example, it describes how these factors are aligning to challenge the status quo. Next, it provides a brief discussion of changes in higher education more generally, including changes in education as a marketplace, reductions to state funding for education and changes in the research enterprise, particularly the rapid growth of the scientific enterprise and leveling off of federal support. Findings The paper pivots to describe the most recent chapter of over 15 years of work within the Games + Learning + Society (GLS) Center, which has sought to create innovative models of learning, innovative models for funding and conducting research in light of these challenges, and innovative ways of engaging the public. Practical implications The assumption driving GLS (and this paper) is that rather than wait for these changes to happen to us, educational technologists can help drive the future by creating it. A good way to get the kinds of learning systems we want is to go about creating them and seeing what works. During this time, GLS developed and released over a dozen game-based learning titles, raised US$10,000,000s in grants and contracts, graduated over 30 doctoral students and post docs, spun out multiple companies, created materials in use by 10,000s (or more) students across the world, and helped build a nascent field of games and learning. Originality/value The paper pivots to describe the most recent chapter of over 15 years of work within the GLS Center, which has sought to create innovative models of learning, innovative models for funding and conducting research in light of these challenges and innovative ways of engaging the public.
