  • The effect of woodchip bioreactors on microbial concentration in
           subsurface drainage water and the associated risk of antibiotic resistance
           dissemination

Hamilton, Sadia Salam, Louis Amegbletor Woodchip bioreactors (WBs) are a promising technology capable of decreasing nitrate concentration in subsurface (tile) drainage system (SDS) effluent. Although they are effective in removing nitrate, little is known regarding the potential impact on microbes and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in subsurface drainage waters. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to measure how bioreactors influence microbial concentrations and AMR concentrations in tile drainage water with different flow conditions and microbial communities. A column study was conducted to simulate an existing, field denitrifying woodchip bioreactor. Four synthetic waters were spiked with different combinations of microbes isolated from the influent of a field-scale bioreactor and pumped through the columns during the experiment. Steady and wet-dry flow conditions were examined. The results of this work demonstrated the potential for denitrifying bioreactors to reduce E. coli concentrations within SDSs under different flow conditions, which expands the potential benefits of WBs. However, the results also illustrated that WBs have the potential to increase phenotypic antibiotic-resistant microbes in the subsurface drainage waters. Applying different microbial communities had significant effects on culturable microbial concentrations, as columns receiving more microbes with a greater diversity had a greater increase in culturable microbial concentrations. A statistically significant and consistent increase in phenotypic AMR concentrations was also found within woodchip bioreactors after assessing the sensitivity of recovered isolates to five different antibiotics. Additional laboratory and future in-field studies are warranted to improve the prediction of pathogen removal and AMR changes in tile drainage water, as well as to support the development of an effective design for microbial contaminant removal from waters passing through denitrifying bioreactors.
       
  • Uncovering traits in recovering grasslands: A functional assessment of oil
           and gas well pad reclamation

Azeria, Kierann Santala, Isabelle Aubin, Anne CS McIntosh Oil and gas exploration has disturbed extensive areas of grassland in North America. Reclamation of this human footprint is only a first step towards ecological recovery. A trait-based approach may provide a mechanistic understanding of biological and edaphic filters influencing longer-term plant community assembly on reclaimed sites. Using taxonomic indices, trait community weighted means (CWM), and functional diversity (FDQ) combined with multivariate models, we compared biological and edaphic properties of 18 reclaimed well pads in Alberta (Canada), to proximate native grasslands. These well pads were certified reclaimed under two reclamation criteria (old, new). Consistent with practices in other regions, newer criteria emphasise using native plant species in place of historically-used introduced agronomic species. We found significant differences between reclaimed and undisturbed reference soil properties (e.g., pH, electrical conductivity), with greater differences on sites reclaimed using the older criteria (e.g., lower TOC, higher bulk density). Plant trait composition also differed between reclaimed and undisturbed sites, with a lower prevalence of short native xeric species, semi-abundant seed production and large seed weight on reclaimed sites. We found a strong trait-environment relationship underlying trait composition difference. While not significantly different in overall trait composition from new sites, old sites included higher prevalence of introduced species, dispersed by animals, preferring mesic conditions, and high seed production. The increased cover of introduced species reduced trait FDQ and lead to an arrested succession. New sites included higher prevalence of tall, native species preferring hydric conditions, therophytes, geophytes, and species with low dispersal capacity. The use of native seed with higher FDQ on new sites seemed to alleviate arrested succession; However, biological trait filters (e.g., tall, hydric preference) and altered edaphic properties, might continue to drive differences between reclaimed and reference sites. Our results suggest that even as practices and policies evolve, reclamation does not fully alleviate the legacy effects of this industrial disturbance. We have demonstrated how trait-based approaches can inform recovery assessment and future reclamation best practices. We must go beyond simply seeding with native species for recovery of plant communities – the traits of these native species matter too.Graphical abstractGraphical abstract for this article

Hemmerling, Yushi Wang, Eric White, Ehab Meselhe Hazards in coastal ecosystems, such as flooding and land loss, demand natural and nature-based solutions from local communities due to the protective and non-protective services they provide when compared with traditionally engineered approaches. In this context, natural solutions are those that consider conserving existing habitats whereas nature-based solutions are those created by humans. These solutions support important coastal ecosystem functions, such as nutrient uptake, fisheries habitat, soil carbon storage, and surge attenuation. Our main research questions were: (1) Based on community engagement, what are the possible natural and nature-based solutions to address coastal hazards in Breton Sound Estuary, Louisiana' and (2) How do these community co-designed nature-based solutions support various ecosystem functions' To help answer these questions, we leveraged the competency group methodology to incorporate the local needs and traditional ecological knowledge of community stakeholders into collaborative ecosystem modelling. In total, fifteen members regularly met five times over an eight-month period to design nature-based solutions to address coastal hazards. Two nature-based solutions, created marshes and restored ridges, were identified most frequently by the competency group (>75% occurrence) in a final survey. Associated ecosystem functions of the identified solutions were assessed with simulation models to determine future ecosystem functions of nutrient uptake, fisheries habitat, soil carbon storage, and surge attenuation after 20 years. By adding created marshes to an ecosystem, our model results indicate slight increases in nutrient uptake, likely increases to fisheries habitat and soil carbon storage capacity, as well as storm surge attenuation in some areas following ridge restoration. Quantifying these ecosystem functions with management actions has been limited and is needed to assess how natural and nature-based solutions impact local communities and resource users. This novel approach to modeling ecosystem-based solutions through a collaborative modeling process with researchers and residents can be applied elsewhere to assess the viability of natural and nature-based solutions.
       
  • Comparing outcomes from competing models assessing environmental flows in
           the Minnesota River Basin

Dougherty The ability to predictively link river hydrology to ecological effects (i.e., flow-ecology relationships) is central to understanding consequences of alternative freshwater management strategies and transparently making trade-offs. While myriad techniques for developing flow-ecology relationships exist, water managers are often concerned about not only model type, but also capacity to reliably predict ecological responses. Here, we develop flow-ecology relationships with three contrasting model development philosophies and examine consistency and robustness of model outcomes as the models are applied to six future land use scenarios in the Minnesota River Basin. All three models are developed from two data sources distributed across the basin: (1) 18 years of modeled streamflow hydrology at 1,016 locations and (2) 463 fish richness monitoring events at 314 locations. Model-1 assumes hydrologic change alone is indicative of ecological response, and the relative change in seven synthetic streamflow statistics is applied as a metric of ecological impact. Model-2 develops flow-ecology relationships from a traditional, deductive modeling approach using dimensional analysis and linear regression, which assumes model adoption will increase if the tool is transparent and based on ecological and hydrological principles. Model-3 applies an inductive, machine-learning model (boosted regression trees) to develop flow-ecology relationships, which assumes that lost transparency in modeling is an acceptable trade-off for increased predictive power. All three models were applied to six “alternative futures” (i.e., land use scenarios) in the Minnesota River Basin. Hydrologic model outcomes (Model-1) show large quantitative responses to land use change and provided a useful intermediate outcome for communicating how land use change alters dimensions of streamflow. Although structurally simple, Model-2 estimated fish richness with reasonable predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.38), and dimensional analysis provided a powerful mechanism for scaling predictions across a range of watershed sizes. Although opaque in the ability to visualize outcomes, the machine learning method (Model-3) estimated fish richness with high predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.73), which may be an acceptable trade-off to managers. When applied to six land use scenarios, all three models generally predict qualitatively similar outcomes (e.g., the increased agricultural development scenario has greater ecological impacts than scenarios emphasizing biodiversity or water quality).
