The main objective of this article is to discuss the current situation of rural collective action in Mexico from the scope and theory of civil society. More particularly, this text offers an analysis about if the concept of civil society is useful and sufficient to describe and to study the activities and practices of varied and diverse alternatives of organized action that are set in motion in the rural sphere in Mexico. This is a theoretical article in which, nonetheless, some empirical references are offered to think the present and future of rural Mexico in terms of human collectivities and the associative world.

This essay examines the existence of a rural civil society in Mexico. There is a basic link that joins the urban way of life with the notion of civil society. The opposition city - field has limited the recognition of genuine forms of rural collective action. The specialized literature on the civil society has ignored the pacific organization of sectors of the rural citizenship to obtain other aims that are not agricultural or the cancellation of an industrial project in his territory. In spite of this situation, we show that the organizations of the rural civil society are not always local expressions of an urban project.

This paper focuses on the presence of violence repertoires, particularly of repression and resistance, in conflicts over nature in indigenous territories in México. Through the case of the Ikojt people of San Dionisio del Mar, Oaxaca, the paper illustrates the articulation of these repertories with non violent on the conflict trajectory. Based on empirical data obtained in interviews with members of the opponents assembly to the wind park project on its territory, the paper retrieves its centrality for the becoming of the processes as in the lived experiences of the subjects involved. In addition, it questions the dominant analytical perspective of civil society that neglects the study of violence by considering it outside of the scope of politics.

This work proposes an interpretation of the performance of organized social groups in Oaxaca, based on the idea of constructing spaces for the cultural and political participation and recognition of Black and Afro-descendent communities. The analysis is part of a critical stance toward the classical approach on civil society, which argues its conceptual scope from within a context of racialization and the coloniality of power. The reflexive intention is to generate an epistemic destabilization through proposing a dialogue between the interpretive frameworks whose discourses put into question our own racial perceptions, both personal and academic, regarding these new social actors and their collective actions.

Civil society is a concept which consolidates during xvi and xviii centuries. Since then it has been useful to designate a part of society which, among other features, is separated from government spaces, that's why it is considered in a different place from politics. However the history seems show us something different, it is the case of some of the civil society organizations, which have changed its objective: from specifically productive issues, to the influence on the politics spaces. This paper show the peasant autonomous organization sample, which, in specific social moments, have transgressed the specific productive space, and show its capability to work in the civil and politic context. This analysis try to give some clues about what imply civil society nowadays, specially in rural context.

Causal analysis of vulnerability aims to identify root causes of crises so that transformative solutions might be found. Yet root-cause analysis is absent from most climate response assessments. Framings for climate-change risk analysis often locate causality in hazards while attributing some causal weight to proximate social variables such as poverty or lack of capacity. They rareland ask why capacity is lacking, assets are inadequate or social protections are absent or fail. This contribution frames vulnerability and security as matters of access to assets and social protections. Assets and social protections each have their own context-contingent causal chains. A key recursive element in those causal chains is the ability –means and powers– of vulnerable people to influence the political economy that shapes their assets and social protections. Vulnerability is, as Sen rightly observed, linked to the lack of freedom –the freedom to influence the political economy that shapes these entitlements. In the Anthropocene, human causes of climate hazard must also now be accounted for in etiologies of disaster. However, attention to anthropogenic climate change should not occlude social causes of (and responsibility for) vulnerability –vulnerability is still produced in and by society.

This article accounts for the various economic alternatives that the people of the community of Tejería, in Pantepec, Puebla, have chosen in order to obtain greater economic income and thereby “improve” their “living standards”. To achieve that, they have opted to displace traditional mesoamerican crops (such as maize and beans) that apparently keep the population in economic marginality. This is not without consequences, because –as it will be shown– they have consciously or unconsciously disclaimed their food sovereignty; with the insertion of increasingly commercial crops into their own productive dynamics, the complex networks of reciprocities that maintain economic and social relations in the community have been weakened; therefore causing a conjuncture in the socio-environmental relations that – with the instruction of bamboo and in the light of the recorded events, shows an ecological and social devastation.

The essay focuses on the context called Reflexive Modernity, to explain why and how environmental risk is characteristic of the so-called “new societies”. It discusses why sociology approaches have a fresh and purposeful vision to explain the environmental degradation as a new way of doing politics. This theoretical and political perspective on environmental risk is revised from the perspective of the German sociologist, recently deceased, professor Ulrich Beck.

When territorial conflicts arise, from what positions are territories being defended' What is in dispute' What projects are carried out through the conflict' To answer to these questions, the present work offers an analysis of cases of socio-environmental conflict that pose territorial claims. I am interested in several points: firstly, to problematize the concept of territory, not to give it as something given and preexistent to the confrontation; Secondly, to know the various arguments upon which the defense is justified and to understand the place that the protagonists claim to have, and finally, to give an account of the actions and socio-historical horizons that are drawn and constructed from these processes. I consider that although these demands are inserted in long-term processes, there is no timeless subject - fixed in time and space-that seeks self-assertion through these struggles, nor there is a preexisting and clearly delimited territory as an object of defense. The hypothesis of departure is that both the subject and the territory, which are mutually involved, are constructed in the conflictive action, are (re) defined, are (re) affirmed and projected socially and temporally. Thus, the objective of this work is to understand the processes of constitution of the place-subject.

The purpose of this work is to present a theoretical-methodological approach to the study of environmental conflicts and to show a possible way to study their longerlasting effects, an aspect we call social productivity. The methodological approach has been organized around two case studies: the “conflict over the pulp mills on the Uruguay River” and the “conflict for the environmental restoration of the Matanza-Riachuelo basin.” These cases were selected for being outstanding disputes in Argentina's public environmental debate. The text poses questions as well as considerations for further discussion on the effects of environmental conflicts, the responses of state authorities and the debates over alternatives to development.

In the present article I shall discuss the spatial dimension of power, particularly in the State as a political organisation, and in a more specific sense, in the territorialisation of the Mexican State in Chiapas based on the construction of the hydroelectric dams’ system all along the Grijalva River. For the presentation of this text I will conceptualise schematically the State and the territorialisation with the aim of knowing how does the State territorialises, and I will finally discuss how does effectively the State territorialises and displays itself in the space.

The article analyzes how social actors involved in environmental conflicts use a realist conception of nature in order to organize the dispute arguments, that is, they consider their evidence as an objective, true and rational explanation of nature. On the other hand, sociology has remarked the cultural and historical mediation to define the environment, fundamental contribution of the constructivist epistemological tradition. The problem is, if we use constructivism alone, it diminishes the importance of arguments in conflict and it can deny the independence and causality of nature. The author establishes the importance to link the environmental sociology practice with critical realism as an alternative to overcome those problems. Finally, he states the need to reclaim the narratives of local communities about nature and its problems in order to integrate their point of view in the solution of conflicts through the opening of deliberative spaces.

This article discusses the penal reforms in Brazil in the context of an unfinished democratization process, in which violence and selectivity of state mechanisms of crime control are still the most striking feature of the penal system. From the diagnosis of increased incarceration, linked to the large number of pre-trial detainees and convicted of drug trafficking, and a presentation of the structure of the crime control field in Brazil, from the formal point of view, it discusses the importance of enactment of Law 12.403 / 2011, known as the Law of Precautionary Measures in Criminal procedure, the legal field resistance to the application of alternatives to provisional detention, and the recent implementation of custody hearings as control mechanism to police discretion and violence and limitation of abuse of the punitive power.

The Colombian criminal system was modified from 2002 to 2004 under the assumption of changing a model of inquisitorial tendency to an accusatory one. This reform was built under the idea of concordance between the political and criminal principles of the accusatory system with a social and democratic rule of law, as well with the need of a more efficient criminal process. This text will describe how the criminal procedure works in Colombia and also the issues of an accusatory system, which will help to understand the Colombian experience and learn from it in other countries.

Today, emerging forms of exercise of power based on a great electoral majority support arise to “unlimited democracies”, which over time can become autocracies. One of the characteristics of this regimes is that they will elude gradually the rule of law and therefore undergo an important control the judiciary, and in particular, the constitutional judge. The limits to power through Law, will become weaker or even disappear, and little by little, the judge will “legalize” or even “constitutionalize” what the government does, which will cause that the government will be over of the Rule of law, even the international law of human rights. The regime that was established in Venezuela 17 years ago as a true democracy with strong popular support and with great promises of a fairer society, known as “chavist” –by its leader, Hugo Chávez Frías–, is an important example of how a limited democracy, becomes an unlimited, and gradually, turn into an autocratic regime, even a government with totalitarian traits. Since the beginning, the subjugation of the judiciary was key to achieve this kind of government. This article shows how was accomplished.

In this paper is proposed a reflection about the justice reform process in Argentina from the conceptual framework elaborated by Giorgio Agamben in Il Regno e la Gloria (2007). As a preface, in first place, is spreaded the proposed challenge that consists of visualizing the criminal law and its liturgy from the glory archaeology thought by Agamben. In second place, is presented the ceremonial features of the state power and law in the criminal proceeding. In third place, are refered the diverse elements needed for thinking about the glory referring the procedural criminal law reform. In fourth place, is reconstructed an action done by law experts in order to promote the orality and trial by jury thought a “Jury by Trial Moot Case”. Finally, the conclusions shows the productivity of the Agamben's perspective of the power genealogy to think about the justice reform. One of the principal sociological findings consists on the fact that the elite linked to the justice need the glory: to construct their own status; to design their own field; to constitute the foundations of their distinctions, privileges and labour; and to keep their legitimate position to promote the justice reform.

Why the border rural civil society in Tamaulipas has not been organized to combat the narco-violence that has severely affected agricultural activities in the main producing region of sorghum in Mexico' To answer this concern, the reflection focuses on the concept of civil society, the characteristics of rural civil society in the region under study and three deeply rooted sociocultural traits in the frontier region: associationism and individualism that are constitutive of agricultural production and illegality that has been essential to the spread of narco-violence. The analysis relies on a qualitative methodological strategy; specifically, the information was collected through semi-structured, focused and in-depth interviews that were made to key informants involved in the dynamization of the regional sorghum's product system (cultivation and marketing of the grain).
