  • Recent developments in the chemistry of sydnones and sydnone imines

MoiseevAbstractThe interest of the scientific community in sydnones and sydnone imines, the most known mesoionic compounds, is grounded on their unusual molecular structures, specific physical and biological properties, and chemical behavior. This nonexhaustive review highlights the achievements in sydnone and sydnone imine chemistry reported since 1998 and covers the preparations of these mesoionic compounds, their functionalization both at the 1,3,4-oxadiazoline ring and in side chains (including that one at N6 of sydnone imines), the ring-opening processes, and [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions where sydnones and sydnone imines act as the 1,3-dipoles. Special attention is paid to 4-lithio and 4-halogeno derivatives that have manifested themselves as the key intermediate compounds for preparations of a variety of sydnone and sydnone imine derivatives. Biological and some other applications of sydnone and sydnone imines are only slightly mentioned in this review.

CharushinAbstractNew atom-economic and environmentally friendly processes should replace the traditional ways of building CC, CN, CO, CP, CS bonds, which are usually based on the replacement of a halogen atom, and, therefore, required the preliminary modification of substrates, and the use of aggressive reagents, harsh conditions or expensive catalysts. In recent years, the direct metal-free functionalization of the C(sp2)H bond, which provides the most efficient and low-waste pathway for molecular transformation, has attracted increasing attention. However, these transformations usually require stoichiometric amounts of chemical oxidizing agents. The modern world and its sustainable development trends are forcing the chemical industry to improve in an environmentally friendly direction and meet the requirements of “green chemistry.” In this regard, the use of electrochemical methods is extremely important. Electrochemical anodic oxidation is an ideal option for the replacement of chemical oxidizers in CH functionalization reactions. The data on the main electrochemical methods and approaches used for the direct functionalization of the C(sp2)H bond in heterocyclic compounds are classified and summarized in this paper.

Synthesis and coordination modes, the role of the discussed compounds in catalysis, materials chemistry, photochemistry, and microbiology are highlighted.

The aza-Prins and related reactions have emerged as a rapid and highly efficient method for the preparation of 6-membered nitrogen-containing heterocycles. This chapter reviews recent developments in the aza-Prins reaction, particularly focussing on reports since 2000.

Among these, the insertion of a p-block element between the adjacent rings of 2,2′-bithiophene, thus generating tricyclic-fused bithiophenes, has been an especially popular approach to develop various building blocks that have found widespread use in conjugated materials. Due to the importance of these fused-ring species as monomeric units and the fact that this family of building blocks has seen significant advancements in the last decade, the current chapter will review the synthesis and characterization of the known fused tricyclic bithiophenes and analogous bisthiazoles, with a particular emphasis on the known electronic and optical properties of these fused-ring systems.

  • Advances in synthesis and chemistry of azetidines

SinghAbstractAzetidines (azacyclobutanes) constitute a well-known class of heterocyclic compounds. Azetidine scaffold has been discovered in several natural products. Several pharmacologically important synthetic compounds also contain azetidine ring. Because of inherent ring strain, the synthesis of azetidines is a challenging endeavor. In recent years, a number of methods have been developed for the synthesis of diversely functionalized azetidines. The two classical approaches to formation of azetidine ring are cyclization and cycloaddition reactions of appropriate substrates. Diversely functionalized azetidines are also accessed by transformations of functional groups on azetidine ring. One of the most common examples of functional group transformation is the reduction of azetidin-2-ones to azetidines. The azetidine ring possesses unique reactivity. Its chemical properties may resemble its lower homolog aziridine or higher homolog pyrrolidine depending on electronic and steric environment of the molecule, and reaction conditions employed. The ring-opening reactions of azetidines have been employed as key reactions in design and synthesis of several important compounds. Recently, the ring-expansion reactions of azetidines are drawing considerable attention of researchers for the synthesis of various heterocyclic compounds. The azetidines also serve as ligands in asymmetric catalysis. Azetidines find applications in medicinal chemistry as pharmacological tools in peptidomimetics as unnatural amino acids. This chapter presents advances in synthesis and chemistry of azetidines and its application as a building block in organic synthesis during last 10 years.
       
  • Organosilicon azoles: Structure, silylotropy and NMR spectroscopy

LarinaAbstractThe present review summarizes comprehensive data (from the author's work and the literature) on structure and silylotropy rearrangements of organosilicon azoles (pyrazoles, imidazoles, thiazoles, 1,2,3- and 1,2,4-triazoles, tetrazoles and benzazoles) and related compounds by multinuclear 1H, 13C, 15N and 29Si NMR spectroscopy. Special emphasis is given to studies of silylated azoles by dynamic NMR spectroscopy. The structure of C- and N-trimethylsilyl derivatives of azoles, their bistrimethylsilyl analogs, and bicyclic organosilicon derivatives of azoles are discussed. The influence of the nature of the heterocycle and substituent on the equilibrium constants and the values of free activation energy of silylotropic transformations are analyzed. The catalytic effect of halogens and trimethylhalogensilanes on the silylotropy processes in N-trimethylsilylazoles is covered in detail. Critical analysis of literature data on structure of silicon-containing azoles is presented.

Trendy is preparation and tuning of the optoelectronic properties of the target compounds, their complexes or polymers, respectively. Almost all syntheses of nearly all systems are based on transmetallation of lithium (for 1,3-diene known as Ashe's method), potassium, Grignard, copper, titanium, or zirconium species (Fagan–Nugent zirconium metallacycle-transfer method), regardless of whether the system is saturated (as is the case for the majority of compounds) or unsaturated.
       
  • 1,3-Amino alcohols and their phenol analogs in heterocyclization reactions

As we demonstrate in this chapter, in just one or two steps 1,3-amino alcohols and their phenol analogs can be converted into a vast array of four-to-eight-membered rings of great biological importance. The diversity of possible transformations has resulted in a torrent of publications on this topic. This review covers recent (2007 to early 2019) literature on transformations of 1,3-amino alcohols leading to diverse families of N,O,S-heterocycles, including azetidines, pyrrolidines, indoles, 1,3-oxazinanes, 1,3-oxazines, 1,3-oxazinane-2-ones, pyridines, quinolines, quinazolines, 1,4-oxazepanes, 1,4-diazepanes, benzo[f][1,4]oxazepines, and benzo[e][1,4]diazepines. The review aims to give the readers an insight into the great synthetic utility of 1,3-amino alcohols and related compounds.   • Synthesis of various N-heterocycles using the four-component Ugi reaction

Heravi, Leyla MohammadkhaniAbstractNowadays, among synthetic organic chemists, the Ugi four-component reaction (U-4CR), is known as the most important and useful isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions (IMCRs); since it allows the rapid and straightforward synthesis of the linear peptide backbone. U-4CR, actually is the condensation reaction involving, an isocyanide, an aldehyde, an amine, and a carboxylic acid leading to the formation of the corresponding adduct. Significantly, this adduct can be cyclized through a suitable posttransformation, resulting in the construction of different heterocyclic systems containing nitrogen. In this chapter, we try to underscore the use of post-Ugi transformation in the synthesis of various N-heterocycles with four-, five-, six-, and seven-membered rings as well as fused heterocycles bearing one or two heteroatoms.

These N-bridgehead [5,6]-fused ring systems play an important role in the design and synthesis of novel biologically active molecules, catalysts, and fluorescent compounds. The pyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazoline scaffold is a privileged structure present in over 50 alkaloids and in numerous synthetic compounds having a significant range of biological activities. The pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoline and pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinazoline frameworks have also been isolated from natural sources and display biological activities in diverse areas.

The subject of this review is liquid crystalline derivatives of four cyclic aminoxyl radicals (DOXYL, TEMPO, NIT, and PROXYL) and three cyclic hydrazyl radicals (verdazyl and two benzo[e][1,2,3]triazin-4-yls).

SinghAbstractAziridines (azacyclopropanes) constitute the well-known class of heterocyclic compounds. The studies on synthesis and reactivity of aziridines have drawn tremendous interest of organic chemists. The main feature of interest in the chemistry of this molecule is the ring-strain associated with it. The synthetic endeavors to aziridines, once considered as challenging, have made significant advancements. A number of methods have been developed for synthesizing aziridines in enantiopure forms. The chemistry of aziridines focuses on ring-opening. Different types of nucleophiles react with aziridines leading to the cleavage of either C–C bond or one of the two C–N bonds leading to the formation of 1,2-difunctionalized compounds of interest as building blocks in organic synthesis. The opening of an aziridine ring followed by cycloaddition has opened up avenues for entry into diverse types of 4- to 11-membered heterocyclic compounds. The regioselectivity of the ring-opening is governed by steric and electronic factors on the ring. This chapter focuses on advancements in synthesis of aziridines and studies on their reactivity.

The review also summarizes the efficacy of ILs to bring about a wealth of synthetic transformations involving heterocycles. Given the highly diverse nature of task-specific ILs (TSILs) that have been employed in these studies, and considering their huge structural variability coupled to the added complexity due to their combinations with a host of Lewis acids, metals, surfaces, and additives, much of the reported data are organized into charts and figures to facilitate comparison, and to underscore the key points.

Since their inception in 1968, considerable research has been directed toward the understanding, improvement, and development of flexible synthetic methodologies toward this privileged class of organic molecules. In this review we seek both to present an overview of commonly used synthetic methods and to highlight recent developments in the synthesis and modification of BODIPY dyes.
       
  • Fluorescent heterocycles: Recent trends and new developments

Future technologies based on fluorescent molecules may act as leverage for transforming our society into a place of a sustainable economy, at the same time raising our standard of living. Modern heterocyclic molecules are at the core of this development of fluorescence. This chapter gives an overview on recent developments and trends in the field of fluorescent heterocyclic molecules of selected systems. Starting with their synthesis, modern applications and studies of these molecules are discussed and integrated into the larger context of technological developments.
