  • A review of carbon quantum dots and their applications in wastewater

The unique properties of CQDs are low toxicity, chemical inertness, excellent biocompatibility, photo-induced electron transfer and highly tunable photoluminescence behaviour. Sustainable raw materials are commonly used for the fabrication of CQDs because they are cost-effective, eco-friendly and effective to minimise waste production. CQDs can be fabricated using laser ablation, microwave irradiation, hydrothermal reaction, electrochemical oxidation, reflux method and ultrasonication. These methods undergo several chemical reactions such as oxidation, carbonisation, pyrolysis and polymerisation processes to produce CQDs. Due to small particle sizes of CQDs, they possess strong tunable fluorescent properties and highly photo-luminescent emissions. It also contains oxygen-based functional groups and highly desired properties as semiconductor nanoparticles. Therefore, CQDs are promising nanomaterials for photo-catalysis, ions sensing, biological imaging, heavy metal detection, adsorption treatment, supercapacitor, membrane fabrication and water pollution treatment. This review paper will discuss the physical and chemical properties of CQDs, raw materials and methods used in the fabrication of CQDs, the stability of CQDs as well as their potential applications in wastewater treatment and biomedical field.Graphical abstractUnlabelled Image

           bioactive phytochemicals

These structures possess a unique potential in encapsulating/entrapping bioactive ingredients due to their tree-like nature. Therefore, they could swiftly obtain a valuable statue in nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and medical sciences. Phytochemicals, as a large proportion of bioactives, have been studied and used by scholars in several fields of pharmacology, medical, food, and cosmetic for many years. But, the solubility, stability, and bioavailability issues have always been recognized as limiting factors in their application. Therefore, the main aim of this study is representing the use of dendrimers as novel nanocarriers for phytochemical bioactive compounds to deal with these problems. Hence, after a brief review of phytochemical ingredients, the text is commenced with a detailed explanation of dendrimers, including definitions, types, generations, synthesizing methods, and safety issues; then is continued with demonstration of their applications in encapsulation of phytochemical bioactive compounds and their active/passive delivery by dendrimers. Dendrimers provide a vast and appropriate surface to entrap the targeted phytochemical bioactive ingredients. Several parameters can affect the yield of nanoencapsulation by dendrimers, including their generation, type of end groups, surface charge, core structure, pH, and ambient factors. Carbon dots (CDs) have shown to be very promising and outstanding agents for various biomedical applications (bio imaging studies, treatment of NDs and brain tumors). They exhibit remarkable properties such as biocompatibility, small size (less than 10 nm, enabling penetration into BBB), tunable optical properties, photostability and simple synthetic procedures, allowing them to act as ideal candidates in various fields of science. Therefore, the objective of this review is to overview the recent studies on CDs for the development of neuro drug delivery systems to reach CNS via crossing of BBB. Primarily, this review briefly outlines the unique optical properties and toxicity of CDs. The development of novel neuro drug delivery systems for various neurological disorders using CDs as carriers is described. This review also covers the potential applications of CDs in brain tumors imaging and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Nanocarriers can be employed to overcome these challenges. There are five groups of nanocarriers based on the principal mechanism/ingredient used to make them for the encapsulation of natural antioxidants titled biopolymeric nanoparticles, lipid-based and surfactant-based nanocarriers, nanocarriers made with specially designed equipment, nature-inspired nanocarriers, and miscellaneous ones. The main goal of this study is to have an overview of role of different nanocarriers in improving the efficiency of natural antioxidant compounds for different purposes.   • Advances of spontaneous emulsification and its important applications in
           enhanced oil recovery process

However, current methods, like high-shear mixing, high-pressure homogenizing, sonicators and others, often use lots of extra energy to prepare the emulsions with high costs but very low energy efficiency. In recent decades, spontaneous emulsification methods, which allow one to create micro- and nano-droplets with very low or even no mechanical energy input, have been launched as an overall less expensive and more efficient alternatives to current high extra energy methods. Herein, we primarily review the basic concepts on spontaneous emulsification, including mechanisms, methods and influenced parameters, which are relevant for fundamental applications for industrials. The spontaneity of the emulsification process is influenced by the following variables: surfactant structure, concentration and initial location, oil phase composition, addition of co-surfactant and non-aqueous solvent, as well as salinity and temperature. Then, we focus on the description of importance for emulsions in EOR processes from advances and categories to improving oil recovery mechanisms, including both sweep efficiency and displacement efficiency aspects. Finally, we systematically address the applications and outlooks based on the use of spontaneous emulsification in the practical oil reservoirs for EOR processes, in which conventional, heavy, high-temperature, high-salinity and low-permeability oil reservoirs, as well as wastewater treatments after EOR processes are involved.Graphical abstractUnlabelled Image

Recent literature highlights the benefits of liposomes for use as drug delivery systems, including encapsulating of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic cargos, passive and active targeting, enhanced drug bioavailability and therapeutic effects, reduced systemic side effects, improved cargo penetration into the target tissue and triggered contents release. Pioneering work of liposomes researchers led to introduction of long-circulating, ligand-targeted and triggered release liposomes, as well as, liposomes containing nucleic acids and vesicles containing combination of cargos. Altogether, these findings have led to widespread application of liposomes in a plethora of areas from cancer to conditions such as cardiovascular, neurologic, respiratory, skin, autoimmune and eye disorders. There are numerous review articles on the application of liposomes in treatment of cancer, which seems the primary focus, whereas other diseases also benefit from liposome-mediated treatments. Therefore, this article provides an illustrated detailed overview of liposomal formulations, in vitro characterization and their applications in different disorders other than cancer. It is our purpose to update the need for extended information in order to draw adequate conclusions about the reason for irregularities in production and how this is related to individual components or fractions in the crude oil. Our intention is to show that the mass related analysis (such as SARA, MS etc.) are insufficient for a validation of the early stage predictions concerning irregularities. The review introduces a set of new characterization and fractionation techniques such as interfacial rheology, SANS, and NMR, where the central theme is the functionality of the components and not just their mass. Two crude oil-related issues are addressed: Wax precipitation and deposition, and crude oil/water resolution. First, bulk techniques to characterize wax precipitation are reviewed. The influence of the chemistry of other crude oil components (asphaltenes) and wax inhibitor on the precipitation is highlighted. Secondly, in aqueous systems, interfacial w/o conditions are important for the stability of dispersed systems. Asphaltenes have a crucial and important role in the stability of crude oil emulsions. Here special attention is directed to properties like interfacial viscosity and elasticity as well as the adsorbed layer structure determination. Small molecular changes in these properties will have dramatic influence on the stability of the heterogeneous systems. Additionally, approaches to assess the stability of Pickering emulsions against physical deformation such as coalescence and gravitational separation were reviewed. Potential future developments of these characterization techniques were also briefly discussed. Model membranes at the air-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces can be studied using a range of complementary surface-sensitive techniques to give a detailed picture of both the structure and physicochemical properties of the membrane and its resulting interactions. In this review, we will present the main planar model membranes used in the field to date with a focus on monolayers at the air-liquid interface, supported lipid bilayers at the solid-liquid interface and advanced membrane models such as tethered and floating membranes. We will then briefly present the principles as well as the main type of information on molecular interactions at model membranes accessible using a Langmuir trough, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy, Brewster angle microscopy, Infrared spectroscopy, neutron and X-ray reflectometry. A consistent example for following biomolecular interactions at model membranes is used across many of the techniques in terms of the well-studied antimicrobial peptide Melittin.   • Metalloporphyrinic metal-organic frameworks: Controlled synthesis for
           catalytic applications in environmental and biological media

Nevertheless, control of the coordination of the porphyrin ligand and its derivatives remains a challenge for engineering new-tunable Porph-MOF frameworks by self-assembly methods. The key challenges exist in (i) collapse of the large open pores of Porph-MOFs during synthesis, (ii) deactivation of unsaturated metal-sites (UMCs) by axial coordination, and (iii) the tendency of both coordinated moieties at peripheral meso- and beta-carbon sites and the N4-pyridine core to coordinate with metal cations. In this respect, this review covers the advances in the design of Porph-MOFs relative to their counterpart covalent organic frameworks (Porph-COFs). The custom-designed porphyrin/metalloporphyrins ligands and their influence are highlighted. Synthesis strategies of Porph-MOFs are also illustrated with modular design of hybrid guest@host composites (either Porph@MOFs or guest@Porph-MOFs) with exceptional topologies and stability. This review summarizes the synergistic benefits of coordinated porphyrin ligands and functional guest molecules in Porph-MOF composites for enhanced catalytic performance in various redox applications. Many of these plasticisers are esters of polyvalent acids and phthalic acid has previously been predominant but various alternatives are now being more widely explored. The eventual distribution of these compounds depends not just on solubility in aqueous media and on vapour pressure but also on their interaction with other materials, particularly lipids and amphiphiles.   • Ion partitioning and permeation in charged low-T* membranes

To date, modeling of ion transport has mainly relied on mean-field approaches, originally intended for weak inter-ionic interactions, i.e., high reduced temperature T*. This condition is violated in many membranes, which could explain disagreement between predicted trends and experiments. The paper highlights observed discrepancies and develops a new approach based on the concept of ion association, more adequate in the low-T⁎ limit. The new model addresses ion binding and mobility consistently within the same physical picture, applied to different types of single and mixed salts. The resulting relations show a significantly weaker connection between ion partitioning and permeability than the standard ones. Estimates using primitive model (PM) of ions in a homogeneous dielectric suggest that non-PM mechanisms, originating from the molecular structure of the ion-solvating environment, might enhance ion association in membranes. PM analysis also predicts that ion solvation and association must be rigidly related, yet non-PM effects may decouple these phenomena and allow a crossover to non-trivial regimes consistent with experiments and simulations. Despite the crude nature of the presented approach and some questions remaining open, it appears to explain most available experimental data and presents a step towards predictive modeling of ion-selective membrane separations in water-, environment- and energy-related applications.Graphical abstractUnlabelled Image
       
  • Bacteria-nanoparticle interactions in the context of nanofouling

Considering the importance of the detrimental impact of biofouling, it has received much attention in the scientific community and from concerned stakeholders. With the development of nanotechnology and the nowadays widespread use of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), concerns have been raised regarding their fate in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Safety aspects and public health issues are critical in the management of handling nanomaterials and their nanowastes. The interactions of various types of nanoparticles (NPs) with planktonic bacteria have also received attention due to their antimicrobial properties. However, their behavior in regard to biofilms is not well understood although, in the environment, most of the bacteria prefer living in sessile communities. The question appears relevant considering the need to build knowledge on the fate of nanoparticles and the fact that no one can exclude the risk of accumulation of nanoparticles in biofilms and on surfaces leading to a form of nanofouling involving both engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) and nanoplastics. The present analysis of recent research accounts allows in identifying that (1) research activities related to water remediation systems have been mostly oriented on the impact of NPs on pre-existing biofilms, (2) experimental designs are restricted to few scenarios of exposure, usually limited to relative short-time periods although nanofouling could favour the development of multi-resistant bacterial species through sub-lethal exposures over prolong periods of time (3) nanofouling in other systems in which biofilms develop remains to be addressed, and (4) new research directions are required for investigating the mechanisms involved and the subsequent impact of nanofouling on bacterial consortium responses encountered in a variety of environments such as those prevailing in food production/processing settings. Finally, this review aims at providing recent information and insights on nanoparticle-bacterial interactions in the context of biofilms in order to supply an updated outlook of research perspectives that could help establish the framework for production, use and fate of nanomaterials as well as future research directions.Graphical abstractUnlabelled Image
