  • Holland Colours launches bio-derived colorants for personal care packaging

      Indiana-based Holland Colours Americas Inc, a subsidiary of Dutch company Holland Colours NV, has launched The Natural Collection, a new bio-derived colorant line for use in cosmetic packaging and other commercial applications. The company claims to be the first to develop a colorant product range specifically for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and biopolymers in which the colour pigments are non-toxic.

      US companies Sun Chemical Corp and Modern Dispersions Inc have both recently introduced new black colorants for plastics. Sun Chemical's latest offering is a black pearlescent pigment that is reported to provide exceptional lustre, sparkle and jetness compared to similar pigments currently on the market. Elsewhere, Modern Dispersions has launched ECOBlack, a new line of black masterbatches made from 100% recycled carbon black from post-consumer tyres.

      In Germany, colourists at Gabriel-Chemie have developed a series of ‘previously unachieved effects’ in plastics that emulate structures and surfaces found in nature, the company claims. These new effects include the representation of banded onyx, marble veining, oxidized metals and even concrete in numerous colour combinations, Gabriel-Chemie reports. They can be achieved in polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE).

      Evonik Industries is to build its planned new US production facility for precipitated silica near Charleston in South Carolina. The company says that the additional capacity will allow it to meet growing demand from the manufacture of energy-efficient tyres in North America.

  • Granula takes masterbatch production to India with new joint venture

      Germany chemicals giant BASF SE has revealed plans to invest more than €200 million in its global plastics additives business across the next five years.
