  • BASF starts up DOTP plasticizer and 2-EH feedstock plants at Pasadena
           site; reports 12% sales growth

      In the USA, BASF Corp has commenced production of Palatinol® DOTP (dioctyl terephthalate) at its Pasadena facility in Texas. The new plant has the capacity to produce 60 000 tonnes annually of the general-purpose, non-ortho-phthalate plasticizer. The company also recently started up a 100 000 tonnes/year plant for DOTP feedstock material 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) at the same site.

      BASF's Irgastab® PUR 70 liquid heat stabilizer blend for polyols has won the European Flexible PU Foam Innovation Award. The novel anti-scorch system, which is free from both amines and aromatic solvents, is suitable for use in the production of both polyester- and polyether–based flexible foams, and in polyurethane (PUR) flexible foams for automotive applications complying with the VDA 278 10/11 standard. The innovation award is presented by EUROPUR and Urethanes Technology International.

According to the company, it is the first carbon black to be granted this certification.

  • HuntsmanClariant merger ‘on track’ but investor opposition

      According to an update from Clariant and Huntsman Corp in late July, preparations for their planned merger to create HuntsmanClariant, a speciality chemicals company with potential sales of US$13.2 billion [ADPO, July 2017], are showing ‘strong progress’. The shares were listed on the New York Stock Exchange on 3 August and began trading under the ticker symbol VNTR. The IPO closed the following week on 8 August.

      Bruggolen® TP-M1417, the latest introduction from German speciality chemicals producer BrüggemannChemical, makes it is possible for compounders and processors to adjust the relative viscosity of polyamides precisely and reproducibly, the company claims. According to Brüggemann, its newly developed modifier allows high-viscosity polyamide scrap or off-spec material to be ‘upcycled’ to produce material of injection moulding quality. This offers compounders ‘significant cost benefits’ compared to the use of virgin polymers, it says.

The facility will be constructed in four phases; the first phase is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018 and will have a capacity of 2000 tonnes/year, the company reports.

  • Zeppelin builds carbon black recovery plant for Pyrolyx

  • Global demand for plasticizers continues to rise

      Two recently published market studies elucidate the current status and likely mid-term development of the global markets for plasticizers. In the fourth edition of its Plasticizers market study, Germany's Ceresana forecasts that global demand for all plasticizers will increase to about 9.75 million tonnes in 2024, with typical volume growth rates for the different types of about 3–3.5%. The latest report from MarketsandMarkets (M&M) confines itself to the non-phthalate plasticizers, forecasting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7% in value terms from 2017 to 2022 for this sector.

  • ECHA proposes classification of TiO2 as category 2 carcinogen

      The Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) of the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) is proposing that titanium dioxide (TiO2) should be classed as a category 2 carcinogen through inhalation under the European Union's REACH Regulation.
