  • Hamming-Luby rateless codes for molecular erasure channels

In many nano-scale systems, due to limited molecular energy, each information symbol is encoded into a small number of molecules. As such, information may be lost in the process of diffusion-advection propagation through complex topologies and membranes. Existing Hamming-distance codes for additive counting noise are not well suited to combat the aforementioned erasure errors. Rateless Luby-Transform (LT) code and cascaded Hamming-LT (Raptor) are suitable for information-loss, however may consume substantially computational energy due to the repeated uses of random number generator and exclusive OR (XOR). In this paper, we design a novel low-complexity erasure combating encoding scheme: the rateless Hamming-Luby Transform code. The proposed rateless code combines the superior efficiency of Hamming codes with the performance guarantee advantage of Luby Transform (LT) codes, therefore can reduce the number of random number generator utilizations. We design an iterative soft decoding scheme via successive cancelation to further improve the performance. Numerical simulations show this new rateless code can provide comparable performance comparing with both standard LT and Raptor codes, while incurring a lower decoder computational complexity, which is useful for the envisaged resources constrained nano-machines.
       
  • Cellular automata-based byte error correction in QCA

Vilela NetoAbstractIt is important for Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) systems to reliably communicate with other circuits. In this work, we detail a circuit designed in QCA that corrects single byte errors. The circuit implements a Reed-Solomon code and was designed using principles from Cellular Automata (CA) theory. We present an encoder and a decoder that are able to correct single byte errors. Moreover, we also design other building blocks such as: pulse generator, syndrome calculator, position locator, word inverter, and error corrector circuits. We also include an application example, demonstrating how to use and connect the encoder and decoder in QCA communication systems. We validate the design by means of simulations in QCADesigner. Our results show the correct behavior of the circuit, being able to detect and correct a byte error. We also present the cost function and energy dissipation analysis of the system. The proposed circuit is of fundamental importance as it can be used and applied in QCA communications systems, improving its robustness in the presence of communication errors.

Louch, Per Steinar Halvorsen, Jacob Bergsland, Ilangko BalasinghamAbstractThere is continuous interest in maximizing the longevity of implantable pacemakers, which are effective in remedying and managing patients with arrhythmic heart disease. This paper accordingly first proposes miniature actuating nanomachines that inter-connect with individual cardiomyocytes and then deeply explores their energy expenditure when performing basic cardiomyocyte stimulation tasks. Since evoked electrical impulses from a number of actuated cardiomyocytes could coordinate contraction throughout the remaining heart muscle and lead to a heart beat, the miniature actuating nanomachines acting synchronously form a conceptual multi-nodal nano-actuator pacemaker network. Rectangular–, sine–, half-sine–, and sawtooth stimulation pulses with varying configurations are considered for actuation of a single isolated in-silico cardiomyocyte by each of the nanomachines. Computer optimization methods with energy consumption as a cost function are utilized to configure preferable stimulation signals in terms of numbers of stimulation sessions/pulses, pulse amplitudes, and duration. In addition, the simulation data are compared with experimental data obtained using in-vitro mouse cardiomyocytes. Among the considered waveforms, half-sine pulses that lead to actuation of a single cardiomyocyte consume minimum energy. None of the used sequences with multiple stimulation pulses reduces the overall energy expenditure of cell stimulation when compared to a single pulse stimulation.
       
  • Serial concatenated convolutional code encoder in quantum-dot cellular
           automata

For applications in communications, serial concatenated convolutional codes (SCCCs) have been investigated due to their negligible error floor for deep space communication. Using a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches, we design and implement an SCCC encoder in QCA technology. In this work, a Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) code encoder with the ability for correcting burst errors, a pseudo random interleaver for permuting signal bits, and a convolutional code encoder for correcting random errors are logically connected in series for composing the SCCC encoder. Specifically, inspired by the idea for a divider design, a layout for (n, k, t) BCH code encoders is proposed and implemented with QCA cells. For using the four-phase clock mechanism, we also devise the serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial converters for constructing the interleaver. In addition, (u, f, K) convolutional code encoders with various constraint lengths are designed as well. The functionalities and validity of the proposed circuit design are verified by using QCADesigner.
       
  • Statistical characterization and analysis of low-THz communication channel
           for 5G Internet of Things

AkanAbstractThis paper presents measurements and statistical characterization to compare three potential bands of the low-THz channel, namely, the 300 to 319 GHz, 340 to 359 GHz and 380 to 399 GHz bands. From the large set of measurements performed in line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS (NLoS) environments, parameters for path loss model with shadowing are evaluated. Our results show that the path loss exponents for the band around 310 GHz, 350 GHz, and 390 GHz is 2.07, 1.90 and 1.96, respectively. The impacts of different materials acting as surfaces in LoS channels and reflectors in NLoS environments are also examined. Additionally, the statistical analysis due to temporal, spatial and multipath propagation is performed to determine the best fit distributions. Finally, we look at some networking scenarios in THz Band communication to derive the expressions for the number of connections a user can make based on antenna characteristics, data rate requirements and antenna mobility as well as network density. Our results suggest fundamental parameters that can be used in future THz Band analysis with applications in both macro and micro scale Internet of Things (IoT).
       
  • A new efficient design for random access memory based on quantum dot
           cellular automata nanotechnology

Memory is utilized as one of the primary parts in different circuits design, hence the design and optimization of random access memory (RAM) cells have become one of the most attractive research areas in QCA technology. In this paper, a new D-latch-based nano-scale RAM cell is proposed which is suitable for the implementation of efficient single-layer QCA-based circuits. In addition, by employing this memory cell, 1×4 RAM is also presented. These circuits are designed using QCADesigner and functional correctness of simulation results is also proved. According to the collected results, the introduced nano-scale structure involves low latency and a small number of cells in contrast to its previous counterparts.
       
  • Receiver design and performance analysis for pulse position modulation
           technique in diffusion-based molecular communication

In this paper, Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) is studied. We divide the received time step to four separated bins and recognized the distribution model of received molecules in each bin. As a benchmark, we derive Maximum Likelihood (ML) detector for comparison with other methods. Furthermore, we propose a technique called MAX detector in order to design the receiver for simplifying the symbol detection procedure. By changing the values of time step and distance between the transmitter and the receiver, we change the effect of Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). Further, we find the BER (BER) of MAX detector analytically. It is seen that two detection methods for PPM can achieve the same BER for some practical cases, while the MAX detector is simpler than ML detector. Compared to other methods such as type-based and concentration-based modulations, we find that at high rates, i.e., low Ts, the pulse position modulation works better and it has better performance in the intense ISI conditions.
       
  • Signal generation and storage in FRET-based nanocommunications

Two solved issues are reported in the paper, namely: signal generation and signal storage in FRET-based nanonetworks. First, luciferase molecules as FRET transmitters which are able to generate FRET signals themselves, taking energy from chemical reactions without any external light exposure, are proposed. Second, channelrhodopsins as FRET receivers, as they can convert FRET signals into voltage, are suggested. Further, medical in-body systems where both molecule types might be successfully applied, are discussed. Luciferase-channelrhodopsin communication is modeled and its performance is numerically validated, reporting on its throughput, bit error rate, propagation delay and energy consumption.
       
  • Routing techniques in wireless nanonetworks: A survey

The extremely limited capabilities and resources of nanonodes, as well as the severe path loss of terahertz band communication in WNNs, represent a challenge to the communication distance among nanonodes and the overall network performance. Therefore, appropriate routing protocols are necessary for guaranteeing multihop communication in WNNs. In this survey, the existing routing protocols for WNNs are comprehensively analyzed and classified based on three principles: network architecture, node mobility and routing path. Following that, we will describe each type of routing protocol in detail. On the basis of the peculiarities of WNNs, especially the constrained resources and limited energy supply, the features of each protocol are presented through a detailed comparison. Finally, by integrating the features of WNNs and the problems of existing routing technologies, we present our views on the future research directions of routing techniques in WNNs.

  • Computation of decision problems within messages in DNA-tile-based
           molecular nanonetworks

We present a new approach to implement nanonetworks with molecular communication using tile-based self-assembly systems on the basis of DNA. In this model, the medium of communication is filled with DNA-based molecules. Furthermore, some nanobots are capable of creating or releasing said molecules. Once present, they can be detected by other nanobots and interpreted as messages. Some DNA-based molecule systems are capable of universal computation. We show that it is possible to construct systems, in which the evaluation to true of an arbitrary decision problem is a precondition for the assembly of a message molecule. We relocate computations from nanobots into message molecules, thereby revolutionizing the paradigm for computation in nanonetworks. This approach can be interpreted as computation inside the communication channel. We further present message molecules that only assemble if a marker has been detected at least k times, as a proof of concept.

As advances in nanotechnology emerge continuously, new areas of applications in nanoscale communication also emerge that involve biological systems. By definition, nanocommunication is the exchange of information at nanoscale level and constitutes the basis of any wireless interconnection of individual nanomachines comprising a nanonetwork. Such systems have unique properties that must be taken into account, when trying to delve into new communication paradigms based on micro-biological communication systems. In this context, development of bio-inspired nanonetworks is a fledgling yet fast growing area of scientific interest with a significant impact on future applications in multiple fields. A representative family of such systems includes bacterial nanonetworks, where specific key parameters of bacterial physiology can be utilized to model and develop appropriate information dissemination in nano level frameworks. Hence, the aim of this work is to conduct a systematic review of the approaches used to investigate bacterial nanonetworks with respect to (a) potential applications, (b) techniques and tools employed, and (c) parameters modeled. The results of this investigation project the salient features of parametrically-driven modeling approaches that could act as potential ground breakers in the future development of bacteria-inspired nanonetworks. In that sense, the title approaches in the surveyed literature project the usefulness of extracting valuable knowledge for deeper understanding of functional nanosystems. That, in turn, gives rise to new hypotheses on the development of future functionally selective bio-inspired nanoscale networks.
