  • Provenance studies of aeolian sand in Mu Us Desert based on heavy-mineral
           analysis
    • Abstract: Publication date: October 2019Source: Aeolian Research, Volume 40Author(s): Zhongyuan Wang, Yongqiu Wu, Lihua Tan, Tianyang Fu, Yanglei Wen, Dawei Li Provenance studies of aeolian sand are beneficial for understanding desert formation and evolution. The material source of aeolian sand in the Mu Us Desert remains controversial, and few studies have focused on its sand transport pathways. Thus, the heavy-mineral compositions of 92 modern aeolian sand samples, 23 fluvio-lacustrine sediment samples, 5 alluvial sediment samples and 19 bedrock samples were examined in this study. First, aeolian sand samples were classified into several groups by assemblage-based hierarchical cluster analysis. Then, the mineralogy of each group was compared with potential source mineralogies to determine the groups’ origins. Finally, the dune sands’ transport pathways were determined by comparing the between-assemblage similarities of sands along the wind direction. The results reveal the following: (1) The aeolian sand heavy-mineral suites in the central and northern areas differ from those in the southwestern areas, suggesting significant source differences. In the central and northern areas, the weathered detritus of sandstone was concentrated in depressions mainly by fluvial processes, thus providing a primarily fluvio-lacustrine sediment supply for dune creation. In the desert’s southwestern region, the sources also include Yellow River sediment and Loess Plateau slopewash. (2) The sand transport is strongly limited by fluvial and lacustrine systems, leading to anisotropic suite patterns in aeolian sand in the Mu Us Desert.

  • Dust emission from crusted surfaces: Insights from field measurements and
           modelling
    • Abstract: Publication date: October 2019Source: Aeolian Research, Volume 40Author(s): Martina Klose, Thomas E. Gill, Vicken Etyemezian, George Nikolich, Zahra Ghodsi Zadeh, Nicholas P. Webb, R. Scott Van Pelt Crusted surfaces can be major sources of mineral dust emission. Quantitative understanding of dust emission from crusted surfaces is limited, because (1) theories on dust emission are not well tested for such surfaces; and (2) modelling is hampered by a lack of input data sufficient to describe the surface conditions. Combining detailed field measurements with physics-based numerical modelling, we present new insights into dust emission from crusted surfaces. Our measurements confirm that crust erodibility and dust-emission intensity can increase or decrease after previous erosion events. To support interpretation of the measurements and to test the applicability of a state-of-the-art parameterisation to simulate dust emission from crusted surfaces, we apply the dust emission scheme of Shao (2004). Saltation flux, which is input to the scheme, is approximated using the parameterisation of Kawamura (1964) and a scaling factor obtained from observations. Limitations of this approach are discussed. Our results show that the dust emission scheme is suitable to estimate dust emission from crusted surfaces if accurate input data and parameters describing the soil-surface condition are provided. The parameters were optimized for each dust event to achieve a best estimate. The variation of the resulting parameter values confirms the observed variability of dust-emission efficiency between the events and provides further evidence that it was caused by variations in crust erodibility. Our study demonstrates that available physics-based dust-emission parameterisations are able to simulate dust emissions under complicated conditions, but also that refined information on the soil-surface conditions are needed as input to the schemes.

  • Wind tunnel simulation of an opencut tunnel airflow field along the
           Linhe-Ceke Railway, China
    • Abstract: Publication date: August 2019Source: Aeolian Research, Volume 39Author(s): Min Yan, Haibing Wang, Hejun Zuo, Gangtie Li Opencut tunnels are linear arch constructions that are being used as new structures to prevent sand encroachment on railway lines. The large size and shape of the contained structure affect the wind field around the structure in a manner different to how traditional constructions prevent sand accumulation. The present study identified the characteristics of wind velocity and flow fields in opencut tunnels in a wind-tunnel simulation. Results show that airflow having different wind angles (15°–90°) had different effects on the sand-accumulation-prevention characteristics of the opencut tunnel. The inflection point of a rapid change in wind speed was 6H (where H is the vertical height of the model) from the windward side of the opencut tunnel, and the position of an area of strong wind on the upper part of the opencut tunnel gradually moved to the windward side with an increase in the wind angle. This trend was not affected by a change in the indicated wind speed. The reattachment distance on the leeward side decreased with an increase in the wind angle, being 1H at 75°–90°, 2H at 30°–60° and 6H at 15° or less. The protection effect was best for a large angle of the main wind direction (exceeding 75°). Observed characteristics of the wind field show that the opencut tunnel is effective at all wind angles in preventing and controlling railway sand flow hazards and can thus ensure smooth railway operation.

  • Analysis of late Quaternary dunefield development in Asia using the
           accumulation intensity model
    • Abstract: Publication date: August 2019Source: Aeolian Research, Volume 39Author(s): David S.G. Thomas, Richard M. Bailey Asia possesses many extensive desert dune systems within the northern hemisphere subtropical belt and more northerly continental drylands. Collectively these may preserve important sedimentary records of dune system responses to climatic and environmental changes in the Quaternary period. We use the Accumulation Intensity (AI) methodology, which quantifies dune accumulation using luminescence-dated sedimentary records, to provide the first composite and comparable analysis of Asian dune system development in the Late Quaternary. The INQUA dune atlas database contains 826 age records for Asian dune systems, of which 284 meet the criteria for AI analysis. These are from the Negev, Rub’ al Khali, Thar and Hunshandake dunefields, and provide dune accumulation records of up to 150 ka. The majority of accumulation peaks occur within the late glacial to early Holocene (c20-10 ka) and in the late Holocene, but with limited coincidence in the timing of peaks between dune systems, such that coeval dune accumulation drivers are not proposed. However, some important data gaps are identified, and presently robust accumulation histories are only achievable for the Negev and eastern Rub’ al Khali.

  • Wind tunnel tests to estimate PM10 and PM2.5-emissions from complex
substrates of open-cast strip mines in Germany
    • Abstract: Publication date: August 2019Source: Aeolian Research, Volume 39Author(s): Roger Funk, Natalie Papke, Bernd Hör Open-cast lignite mines are sources of PM- emissions, caused by mining activities and wind erosion on the large bare deposition areas. PM10- and PM2.5-emissions of these technogenic materials have not been determined in detail so far, but are needed for emission cadastres or in dispersion models at the local scaleIn wind tunnel experiments substrates from the four active mines in Lower Lusatia in eastern Germany were investigated to estimate PM10- and PM2.5-emissions. The substrates include the cover layers and the lignite seams. Two experimental approaches were compared to relate the PM- emissions of the substrates to the main releasing mechanisms and substrate characteristics. The results show that lignite and lignite containing substrates emit distinctly higher amounts of PM10 and PM2.5 than mineral substrates, regardless of the releasing process. The estimated PM-emission potentials (PM-EP) ranged between 5 and 650 µg g−1 for PM10 and between 2 and 44 µg g−1 for PM2.5 and are correlated to the dry sieving fraction

  • Relative spatial differences in sediment transport in fire-affected
           agricultural landscapes: A field study
    • Abstract: Publication date: August 2019Source: Aeolian Research, Volume 39Author(s): Amelie C. Jeanneau, Bertram Ostendorf, Tim Herrmann Fires can considerably increase wind erosion risk in dryland agricultural regions. While wind erosion post-fire has been extensively studied in rangeland and grazing landscapes, limited work has considered post-fire erosion on annual plant communities and annual crops. Here we evaluated the relative spatial differences in patterns of sediment transport between burnt and unburnt crop stubble sites. Following a severe wildfire, we studied the spatio-temporal pattern of aeolian sediment transport with an array of Modified Wilson and Cooke (MWAC) dust samplers on adjacent burnt and unburnt wheat stubble. Sediment collection was conducted during nine weeks over an area of 3 ha. Collection rates were converted to horizontal sediment flux to derive spatial distribution maps and perform statistical analysis. Compared to the unburnt plot, we observed that sediment transport was up to 1000 times higher within the burnt area. This could lead to damages to emerging annual crops sown after the fire if no management strategy was applied. There was only negligible sediment flux in areas with shallow and low-density stubble, which gradually increased with distance from the unburnt area. These results suggest that strips of remaining unburnt stubble could provide a potential benefit to adjacent burnt or bare plots. Patterns of sediment transport were consistent in all sampling periods and were observed at a spatial scale undetectable in wind tunnel studies, indicating that field observations could complement fine-scale experimental studies to assess environmental processes in real-life conditions.Graphical abstractGraphical abstract for this article

  • The fingerprint of linear dunes
    • Abstract: Publication date: August 2019Source: Aeolian Research, Volume 39Author(s): Louis Scuderi Fingerprint ridges contain unique defects that allow identification of individuals through a combination of metrics that capture Y-junctions and terminations. Ripples, linear dunes and even Transverse Aeolian Ridges (TARs) on Mars share many of these features with closed Y-junctions where crests merge, open Y-junctions where crests bifurcate, and crest end-terminations. Unfortunately, manual extraction of defects from linear dunefields is extremely time intensive and is not consistently reproducible. Fingerprint minutiae extraction software, a mature tool set used extensively in forensic work, was modified and applied to a range of linear aeolian features to determine whether dune defects could be easily extracted from imagery and used to quantitatively characterize their arrangement. The algorithm produced consistent and repeatable output from a range of imagery sources and resolutions from aeolian environments on Earth and Mars in time frames that were orders-of-magnitude faster than manual identification and extraction approaches. The automation of the extraction of defect location, direction, type and quality of each feature identified allows improved characterization of the spatial arrangement linear aeolian landforms. This approach could significantly augment our ability to analyze these features resulting in an improvement in understanding the organization and dynamics of these features and how they respond to environmental change. Challenges, in the form of extracting defects from complex vegetated dunefields, still remain in adapting this software for use in an aeolian environment.
