  • Recent advances in the chemistry of group 9—Pincer organometallics

This chapter showcases such functions and analyzes their impact in the recent chemistry of group 9 coordination compounds. Hemilabile ligands, redox-active designs, and scaffolds equipped with lone electron pairs or protic groups are described, and their cooperation with metal centers is analyzed. Discussions never lose sight of the different reactivity of cobalt that results from its frequent one-electron chemistry.
       
  • Ion pairing in transition metal catalyzed olefin polymerization
    • Abstract: Publication date: Available online 11 September 2019Source: Advances in Organometallic ChemistryAuthor(s): Francesco Zaccaria, Leonardo Sian, Cristiano Zuccaccia, Alceo Macchioni Ion pairing is known to play a key role in stoichiometric and catalytic reactions mediated by charged transition metal complexes, especially when they are conducted in low-polar solvents. Molecular olefin polymerization catalysis by group IV metal complexes represents a textbook case in this respect, due to the high electrophilicity of the involved cationic active species and the very low relative permittivity (~ 2) of the commonly used hydrocarbon solvents. As a matter of fact, ion pairing has a huge impact on activity and selectivity of olefin polymerization catalysts. Ion pairing is strictly related to the activation process, since the cationic active species is usually generated by the reaction of a neutral precursor with a suitable cocatalyst (activator). The counterion generated from the latter reaction has to be weakly coordinating in order to disfavor its competition with the olefin for the occupancy of the coordination vacancy of the active metal center. Herein, after having recalled some generalities of olefin polymerization and nature of activators, using ion pairing as a reading key, the main findings concerning with the structure and self-aggregation tendency of ion pairs relevant to olefin polymerization, as deduced by means of advanced NMR techniques, are described. Representative examples of structure/activity relationships are then discussed, suggesting some rationale to interpret the different catalytic behavior of various ion pairs. Finally, cases in which the activation process, besides providing the expected active ion pair, leads to further layers of complexity (in situ ligand modification, dimer formation, etc.) are illustrated.

New experimental results and theoretical studies provide indeed obust evidence that different metal complexes are really capable of mediating the formation of PC bond starting from P4 and organic reagents and that even catalytic processes accomplishing the direct phosphorylation of alcohols or other organic substrates may be achieved via the intermediacy of a suitable metal complex. Nevertheless and in spite of the relevant findings achieved so far and of the impressive variety of metal complexes containing P atoms and polyphosphorus, Px, units which have been synthesized and characterized up to now, the original target of the direct (catalytic) phosphorylation of elemental phosphorus remains still unsolved. In this chapter the more recent results paving the way to the direct functionalization of white phosphorus are presented and discussed.
       
  • Catalytic nonreductive valorization of carbon dioxide into fine chemicals

Kleij This review describes the latest advances made in the metal-catalyzed formation of heterocycles known as cyclic organic carbonates (COCs) and their potential as modular building blocks in catalytic organic synthesis. In the first part of this overview, specific attention is given to new catalysts and concepts for the preparation of more complex, functional COCs whereas the second part focuses on the use of these functional COCs in organometallic catalysis, and specifically in emerging areas including those related to novel allylic, propargylic and C-H functionalization strategies. The assembled information on the recently disclosed potential of COCs in organic chemistry highlights a vibrant area of research with great future prospect in modern catalytic science.
       
  • Alkane dehydrogenation reactions catalyzed by pincer-metal complexes

On the other hand, the corresponding olefins are sparse but ubiquitous intermediates in the production of fuel and commodity chemicals. Methods that transform alkanes either to versatile alkenes or directly to functionalized hydrocarbons are of great potential value. In this context, molecular pincer-metal catalysts (pincer-iridium in particular) have shown great promise. This chapter provides a concise overview of alkane dehydrogenation catalyzed by pincer-metal complexes with emphasis on tandem reactions involving the upgradation of alkanes to fuel grade chemicals and aromatics. The challenges to be addressed in the ongoing need for the development of direct atom-economical functionalization of alkanes via dehydrogenation are also discussed.
       
  • Transition metal-catalyzed hydrogenation of carbon dioxide in ionic
           liquids

Qadir, Rodrigo Webber, Jairton Dupont The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) has become one of the main goals needed to overcome global warming. The transformation of CO2 into chemicals and fuels (formic acid, methanol, methane, and higher hydrocarbons) can be a resource and provide an energy-efficient future for the chemical industry. Although many catalytic methods have been developed to hydrogenate CO2 into formic acid (FA), only amine–formate adducts have been obtained. Direct CO2 hydrogenation toward higher hydrocarbons (HCs) has also been studied, but there is a substantial hurdle in controlling the selectivities, i.e., higher yields for CO and CH4, as well as the CO2 conversion to overcome the thermodynamic limitations of this transformation. These problems can, at least in part, be solved by the use of ionic liquids (ILs), which have been shown to be adequate media for the stabilization of catalytic active species and for selective control via the formation of nano-cages. Indeed, significant improvements in both catalytic activity and selectivity have been obtained by the use of ILs as catalytic supports for the production of free formic acid, methane, or heavy hydrocarbons. Moreover, transition metal catalysts confined in ILs and hybrids have been successfully used for the hydroformylation and hydroaminomethylation of alkenes employing CO2. The main achievements in the use of ILs as supports for transition metal precursor catalysts in the hydrogenation of CO2 are herein discussed in light of recent reported results.

           by well-defined first-row late transition metals

This transformation has long relied on the use of noble metal catalysts. However, the limited availability, high price and toxicity of these metals have forced to find sustainable alternatives. In this respect, reactions catalyzed by late first-row 3d metals have attracted increasing attention. In particular, the field of carbonyl hydrosilylation has experienced a tremendous development in the last decade. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the advances made on the field of carbonyl hydrosilylation mediated by well-defined Mn, Fe, Co and Ni complexes during the last 10 years. Special attention is paid to the mechanistic aspects of the catalytic reaction.
       
  • Water oxidation at base metal molecular catalysts

In this scheme, the oxidation of water molecules is necessary to provide the electrons than will be employed in the synthesis of chemical fuels. Water oxidation is a particularly challenging reaction because it is a thermodynamically uphill multielectronic process with large activation barriers, but it is key for the realization of artificial photosynthesis because water is the only earth abundant molecule that can provide electrons in a massive and sustainable manner. Therefore, catalysts are needed for eluding the large intrinsic kinetic barriers of the reaction. In nature, water oxidation is catalyzed by a Mn tetrameric species, which enables O–O formation under the inherent mild physiological conditions trough a putative high valent manganese oxo species. Taking natural water oxidation as model, molecular catalysts operating under homogeneous conditions have been explored with the objective of providing basic understanding at molecular scale of the factors that govern this reaction, which eventually will receive utility in the design of efficient water oxidation devices. Traditionally, water oxidation has been studied with ruthenium and manganese based systems, but more recently attention has been shifted toward catalysts based on iridium and first row transition metals: the former due to their extraordinary performance and the latter because of their favorable cost, availability and environmental impact when compared with second and third row transition metals. The topic has been very actively explored and important lessons have been gained. Catalysts based on first row transition metals poise specific problems in terms of stability because generally their metal-ligand bonds are labile and because reaching their high oxidation states require high oxidation potentials. Consequently, high valent states of these metals are exceedingly reactive, readily prone to engage in oxidative decomposition paths. Catalyst design is crucial for circumventing these problems and has enabled the discovery of extraordinarily reactive yet reasonably stable catalysts, comparable to the best examples based on second and third row transition metals. The following chapter reviews key contributions to the field. The manuscript does not intend to be comprehensive, but instead, selected and in our opinion representative examples are discussed.
       
  • Surface coordination chemistry on graphene and two-dimensional carbon
           materials for well-defined single atom supported catalysts

Graphene-based materials such as few layer graphene, graphene oxide, graphdiyne or graphitic carbon nitride offer large possibilities to tune the environment of the metallic center and additionally provide specific electronic interactions, which can be exploited in thermal-, electro-, and photocatalysis. The synthesis of such well-defined single atom supported catalysts as well as the role of such species in catalysis is reviewed in this contribution.
       
  • Gold and platinum alkynyl complexes for biomedical applications

Concepción Gimeno Metal alkynyl complexes have many opportunities to offer in the development of new metal-based chemotherapeutic agents, especially for gold and platinum derivatives, whose complexes present a great stability due to the MCCR bonds. This review covers the chemistry of gold and platinum complexes bearing alkynyl ligands that present antitumor activity. Additionally, platinum compounds are promising candidates to be used as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy with easily tuneable photophysical properties.
