  • Writing the Faith. Books, individual records and the self-definition of
           religious identities (16th-18th centuries).
    • Abstract: Serena Di Nepi
Mobility, conversion, religious hybridisms, identities on the move are the key words of the new historiographical season. By moving from multiple spaces and perspectives, scholars are questioning the interactions among distant societies and sometimes conflicting cultures. As it was not so unusual to cross political borders and overcoming religious boundaries, the Faith played a role in determining the Fate of normal people. This panel focuses on the elusive voices of individuals about their religious identities. Why do people speak about themselves, what they say and what they cautiously keep secret (and of course, those statements determine consequences) represent our main questions. We aim at opening new perspectives on the "emotional history" of the majorities-minorities interactions by researching sources that are not usually investigated to study individuals.

  • Books and perception of faith: a study on the Jews of Ancona (18th
           century).
    • Abstract: Luca Andreoni
The books of the Jews and for the Jews are at the center of an interesting series of studies. Multiple perspectives intersect: from the socio-economic approach to cultural, political and inquisitorial history. The essay focuses on the 18th Century Jewish Community of Ancona and on the analysis of the religious, economic, familiar implications of the vicissitudes that occurred to a neophyte and his family bibles. This analysis enabled us to advance hypotheses on the nexus between the possession of objects of faith and self-perception. In brief, invite to investigate on the clues of the individual’s selfdefinition, as it is described in a case of conversion.

  • ≪Through the labyrinth of my hearth≫: the conversion diary of
           Toby Matthew (1577-1655).
    • Abstract: Chiara Petrolini
The connection between autobiography and conversion remains an inexhaustible topic of research, and lies at the heart of this paper. The exploration will begin with the story of Tobie Matthew (1577-1655), an Englishman who converted to Roman Catholicism in 1606, during a journey to Italy, and years later described his experience in a manuscript. Attentive reading of conversion narratives allows us: better to understand how the self is invented and shaped by the conflicting canons, norms, demands, relations and fears. Matthew offers an excellent case study to observe not just the creativity, ne gotiations and compromises, but also the violence and pressure that pervaded early modern religiosity. A cultivated man, translator of Augustine and Teresa of Avila, lifelong friend of Francis Bacon and John Donne, Matthew consciously constructed his conversion tale based on his literary, moral and theological models. But the narrative he tells, as well as his conversion, far from being an academic exercise, are an effort to overcome his «inner disorder», to heal and free himself from what he called «a desolation of the mind».

  • Minorities and their autobiographies. Looking for authorial fingerprints
of Jews and Muslims in the Early Modern Roman records
    • Abstract: Serena Di Nepi
This article aims to include the history of Jews and (ex) Muslims in Rome in the debate on modern subjectiveness. The paper overlaps two different historiographical methodologies. On one hand, it focuses on the interactions among social, religious and cultural groups in the Early Modern Age. On the other one, it stresses the emotional turn by taking advantage of the most recent discussions on the egodocuments in history. As for the Jewish community, the author investigates the dedications made by the donors of judaica to the synagogues of the ghetto. As for the Muslims, the essay focuses on the bio- graphies of baptized slaves who came to Rome looking for freedom and that in many cases were neophytes from Islam.

  • The duke’s two bodies. State and factions at the funeral of Gian
           Galeazzo Visconti.
    • Abstract: Federico Del Tredici
The funeral (1402) of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, duke of Milan, staged a peculiar sight, unusual in Italian funerals: two ghostly knights, similar to those representing the deceased in the funerals of the greatest rulers all over Europe. In the essay the author aims to explain the role played by the two riders during the funeral, and the importance of their duplicity, only seemingly an insignificant detail. The two ghostly knights actually referred to a key aspect of the material constitution of the state of Gian Galeazzo Visconti: the balance between opposing factions.

  • Who watches the banks' Government supervision of issuing institutions
before the Bank of Italy was established (1874-1892)
    • Abstract:
Surveillance has a crucial issue in banking history. In the first three decades after the Risorgimento the Italian gouvernment maintained a mild and ineffective control on the banking system and particular on the six issuing banks. This was due partly to inevitable administrative failings in a newcomer kingdom, where relations and checks between public and private institutions still needed to build; and partly to a weak political will, that deaf to the ideas of the most advanced European countries, already oriented towards central banking. The Italian government tried to perpetuate the six issuing banks, only to increase at the regional level its political influence and patronage. Administrative inexperience and especially the lack of a clear and coherent banking policy were the problems that worsened the economic crisis of the early Nineties.

  • A paradox of political modernity' The defeat of a popular majority by
           an active minority.
    • Abstract: Luca Baldissara
Why does a public opinion that appears to be largely neutralist have no influence on the government’s decision to go to war' There are many reasons, but there is no doubt that the intervening minorities are able to play in favour of entering the war thanks to the military methods applied to political mobilization.

  • The reasons for a double defeat.
    • Abstract: Pietro Finelli
This paper focuses on the reasons that prevented the transformation of a majority sentiment in the Italian population - hostility to war - into a concrete political proposal with effective chances of success, underlining the pre-political character of this feeling and the difficulty to give a political expression to this opposition to the war. The interventionists, however, did not succeed in exploiting Italy’s entry into the war to promote an attachment to national institutions on the part of the popular masses, whose majority accepted the event with passive resignations.

  • A mosaic of Italian neutralism
    • Abstract: Mirco Carrattieri
The paper try to focus on three main features of the volume: the cultural operation behind it, a collective and net-framed one; the historiographic approach, combining political and spatial point of views (and the latter is developed in a glocal way); and new results about Italian neutralism, which articulate it in time and space and question the traditional idea of an interventionistic victory on the roads.

  • The territorial dimension of Italian "neutralism"
    • Abstract: Anna Lucia Denitto
This contribution argues that territorial analysis represents a powerful tool in the study of the so-called "piazze neutraliste" in 1914 Italy, enabling us to understand the character of these noisy, crowded and often violent demonstrations. The paper also highlights the rise of certain forms of political participations in areas often considered as backward or underdeveloped, despite the defeat of neutralism.
