  • Genoa, the Este and Giannettino Giustiniani: political negotiation in
           Genoa during the mid-seventeenth century
    • Abstract: Diego Pizzorno
Spanish crisis. This article proposes to point out the importance of the Genoese 17th century network in information and negotiation: it was a rich grounds for diplomatic manoeuvres carried out in both formal and informal ways. The Duke of Modena Francesco d’Este, one of the most active Italian princes, performed a small "diplomatic revolution" in the 1640’s, shifting from the Spanish to the French field. This reversal is reflected in the Genoese scene, where the Duke breaks his ties with the Grimaldi de Castro family - previously used to strengthen his relationship with Madrid - to establish contact with a Genoese patrician close to the French court, Giannettino Giustiniani. A risky move, although supported by the Genoese Cardinal Girolamo Grimaldi. Genoa watched these movements with cautious interest, trying to obtain greater profits from the serious crisis of Spanish power. This non-committal attitude highlights the important geo-political, as well as financial, role played by the Republic of Genoa and its oligarchy.

  • The most polite nation on Earth: Good government and the economic
constitution of China according to Antonio Genovesi and his pupils
    • Abstract: Federico D’Onofrio
This article exploits the concepts of emulation and "heterotopia" in order to answer an important question: what kind of constitutional arrangement did Antonio Genovesi and his pupils have in mind' While previous literature underlined how the commercial states of north-western Europe offered the Neapolitans a model to imitate, the article highlights the paradigmatic role of China. In the works of Paolo Mattia Doria and Antonio Genovesi we find the origins in Naples of the enduring myth of China’s perfect administration and political economy. Such a positive image of China survived among Genovesi’s pupils until the last decades of the century. The idea that China was ruled in agreement with the laws of nature, originating in Jesuist sources, became part of Genovesi attack on Montesquieu’s and feudalism; but it also provided the Neapolitan reformers with the model of a ruling elite of mandarins whose only title to power was their knowledge of political economy. The Supreme Council of Finance, created in 1782, seemed for a while to embody certain proposals derived from alleged Chinese models.

  • Legitimism and journalism in the Italian Restoration. Francesco Galvani
           and "L’Amico della gioventù"
    • Abstract: Enrico Francia
The essay reconstructs the editoral life of a legitimist Italian journal, "L’Amico della gioventù" (1832-1837), in the cultural context of Modena, the Italian capital of catholic intransigence in the Restoration age. The analysis of the journal’s short life enables us to follow the efforts of its editor, Francesco Galvani, to establish a literary reputation across the political boundaries of the period. The study of an interstitial figure like Galvani offers an original insight into the Italian literary world in the first half of the nineteenth century.

  • On the relationship between cooperation and politics. First thoughts from
           a long-term analysis: A case study
    • Abstract: Alberto Ianes
This essay investigates the relationship between cooperation and politics, through a long-term analysis focused on the Trentino province, which is typically characterized by a strong cooperative tradition. The cooperative movement that flourished in this province is generally referred to the so called "white cooperation", meaning that it is embedded in the Catholic values and traditions. However, the author illustrates how this "label" is not comprehensive of the universe of the different cooperative initiatives that have emerged in this territory. Besides the first initiatives promoted by the liberals, and then suffocated by fascism, other minor experiences arose in different periods, which are grounded in the left-wing tradition and are referred to as "red cooperation". Furthermore, additional initiatives were designed at the local level, as in the case of the Peasant League. Recent research shows that most cooperatives, while having a strong Catholic background, were managed according to economic criteria that were free from political and/or religious constraints.

  • Cattaneo and the rise of social inquiries in the early twentieth century
    • Abstract: Alice Ingold
The editorial project of Carlo Cattaneo took shape before a clear-cut classification of scientific disciplines set in. This contribution by Alice Ingold aims to highlight the pioneering nature of Cattaneo’s initiative in a "pre-disciplinary" world. She draws a parallel with the early work of Frédéric Le Play, whose inquiries during the 1830’s have been recently rediscovered and revalued A first step lies in underlining the collective dimension of the inquiry and its openness to social actors not belonging to learned societies or to the academic world. Cattaneo’s project places great emphasis on the knowledge elaborated in social practices. Furthermore, the importance given to the historical "construction of the territory" allowed Cattaneo to hold an original position in the debate. Against the conception of law as the product of human will, Cattaneo developed the concept of a "lower tier of institutions". Ingold’s contribution aims to highlight the importance of the rural background in the rise of the social sciences, mainly observed via the "social (urban and industrial) question".

  • The Notizie and the Lombard naturalists. Some reflections
    • Abstract: Elena Canadelli
The essay places the project of the Notizie naturali e civili su la Lombardia of Carlo Cattaneo in the context of the natural sciences of the 1830s and 1840s in Milan and Lombardy, focusing on those botanists, geologists, zoologists and mineralogists, who contributed to the Notizie, from Vincenzo Cesati to Giuseppe Balsamo Crivelli, from the brothers Antonio and Giambattista Villa to Giulio Curioni. Cattaneo’s project is analyzed in relation to relevant scientific institutions of Milan of the time, such as, among the others, the civic Museum of Natural History of Milan, founded in 1838 thanks to Giuseppe De Cristoforis and Giorgio Jan. The essay briefly retraces the initial stages of the planning and the foundation of the Museum.

  • Literary culture in Milan in the age of Cattaneo: some reflections on the
Notizie naturali e civili su la Lombardia
    • Abstract: Gianluca Albergoni
Through a discussion of Giorgio Bigatti’s pages drawing an accurate image of Milanese culture around Carlo Cattaneo, the essay aims to highlight certain changes that affected the Lombard world of letters between the mid-thirties and 1848, in particular the rise of an emphatic interest in science at the expense of literature. This significant turning point in the Milanese world of culture was largely promoted by Cattaneo, whose undisputed leadership in the field was grounded in these in-depth changes. Some of the protagonists of this evolution are to be found on the barricades in 1848, which shows how far went the demand for autonomy entailed in the new intellectual project.

  • "L’istoria deve dar luce all’’istoria"
    • Abstract: Carlo G. Lacaita
In his paper Carlo Lacaita points out that the Notizie naturali e civili su la Lombardia reflect Cattaneo’s long-held views on society, history and civilization. He further shows how these ideas are grounded on the principles of empirical historicism and how they underlie each and every part of his rich and varied literary production. Even when debating problems of common utility and welfare, in fact, he never fails to air his opinions on the different processes of change involving culture and society or to relate them to their internal dynamics and to the action of external influences. This is why federalism was in his eyes the political form most conducive to the free and peaceful coexistence of different peoples.
