  • ‘Tresures’ or ‘Cash Equivalent Goods’. Some considerations about
object’s purposes in the Ancien Régime (XV-XVIII centuries)
    • Abstract: Maria Stella Rollandi, Marina Romani
This essay focuses upon the material and symbolic uses that some precious objects filled in the late Middle Ages and early modern period amidst the upper classes of Mantua and Genoa. The authors will show how the imperfections of some monetary circuits caused the owners of such goods to use them as currency in specific circumstances. Gold and silver coins seemed more suited to circulation than to hoarding. The latter function was in fact entrusted to gold and silver objects. The value assigned to these objects, however, changed in response to specific situations. When they were pawned or sold to get liquidity the value of raw materials was more important than workmanship. For purchasers, on the contrary, workmanship counted more than raw material. According to the authors, this depended on the fact that money consisted of the same metals that were used to make precious objects and was therefore replaceable with them. The conditions that allowed the artistic component to increase its relevance (even when the material value was next to zero, as in paintings) probably occurred when currencies became a purely abstracts representation of value and when the role of property as identity marker became more important.

  • Soundscape and Sensory Governance in the Early Modern Era: The Case of
           Geneva and Milan.
    • Abstract: Manuel Bertolini
In ancient Greek musical theory, harmony was seen as being endowed with a natural virtue capable of altering the rational faculties of the listener’s soul, to the extent of depriving that person of his freedom. The many theological implications of this classical axiom featured in early modern theological debates. In fact, the traditional uses of material objects in the liturgical and spiritual practices, and the sensory experiences associated with them, are at the heart of the Reformation discourse. Reformers and traditionalists are affected to some extent by efforts to separate the sacred and the profane, to reorder gender relations, and to discipline human conduct according to new moral standards. It was impossible for music not to be implicated in the Reformation conflict and its consequences. Instances of crisis, conflict, and change in Milan and Geneva may provide ideal opportunities to explore the ways in which music was experienced, repressed or promoted.

  • April 1860. State and Revolution in southern Italy, before "the Thousand"
    • Abstract: Silvia Sonetti
In recent years, the historiography on the Risorgimento has undergone a profound renewal. Students of the state-building process have tapped new sources and updated historical categories, in close connection with international debates on revolutions and conflicts Unlike states in the central and northern Peninsula, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in fact lived through a long period of revolution and conflict, both before and after the Plebiscite. Although the patriots’ liberal and constitutional platform was the same, the Bourbon state represented an alternative model and a kind of Nemesis of the pan-Italian national project. The balance of the system was maintained until the spring of 1860, when the most dangerous of internal enemies, Sicily, started a fresh insurrection which compelled the new king and the Neapolitan government to engage in repressive action and to strive for territorial control. These facts have been construed by traditional historiography as minor episodes, a kind of prelude to Garibaldi’s exploit; but a rich and largely unpublished documentation points to an opposite direction, that is to the monarchy of Francis II as a champion of Antirisorgimento. The events of April 1860 no longer appear as a transitional phase towards a national war, but as the last, still victorious Bourbon counter-revolution.

  • Garibaldi’s volunteers as seen through the papers of Agostino
           Bertani
    • Abstract: Emilio Scaramuzza
The article focuses on the recruitment of Garibaldi’s followers in 1860, with the aim of tracing the main forms of their enlistment and identifying the concrete ways in which one became a redshirt. It is the crucial role played by the democratic movement in the struggle for Italian unification that thus comes to light. Garibaldinism was an essential component of this movement and reached its peak in the months following the landing of the Thousand at Marsala. Through the study of several hundred letters exchanged between the aspiring volunteers and Agostino Bertani, chairman of the Cassa centrale per il soccorso a Garibaldi, the paper sets out to illustrate the political, social, cultural and ideological character of the people enrolled by the Genoese committee. One result is to qualify the traditional interpretation of Garibaldinism, whose composition looks much less dominated by democratic radicalism than has been asserted by most historians.

  • Perrone’s Ansaldo and Romania in the early years after World War I
    • Abstract: Marcello Benegiamo, Paola Nardone, Natascia Ridolfi
The article analyzes the expansionist movement of the Ansaldo Company of Genoa towards eastern European countries towards the end of the first World War. The authors focuses in particular on industrial projects concerning the oil sector and infrastructures like ports, railways and airways implemented by the Perrone Brothers’ management in Romania. The paper points out weak and strong points in Italian industrial policy and highlight the constraints from Euroepean industrial powers.

  • Khruschev, housing policies and Communist plenty.
    • Abstract: Giovanni Moretto
At the beginning of the Soviet era the housing question was addressed in urban areas with a particular solution, the so-called kommunalka, the communal apartment with shared entrance, kitchen and bathroom. It was a makeshift solution, but it also embodied the collective claims of the Soviet ideology. In the early 1950s the housing situation became extremely problematic. The new Khrushchevian leadership, which gathered citizens’ expectations for more consumer goods and better living conditions, decided to intervene with the housing implementation and the promise of the single-family apartment. A new era of the Soviet architecture was inaugurated, characterized on a wide scale by standard design and prefabrication. The woman, seen as housekeeper, despite the regime’s many words on the gender equality, was at the centre of these dynamics and received the promise of an easing of domestic work thanks to the spread of household appliances which the Khrushchevian utopia of abundance and well-being guaranteed.

  • War and social policies: the Italian case and a first comparison with the
           German one.
    • Abstract: Maurizio Ferrera, Luigi Vergallo
The historical and political debate has considered the relationship between war and social politics in terms of trade-off for a long time. War, especially if it is prolonged, tends to shift the social politics, mainly because of the new spending imperatives. However the most recent literature has adopted a more dissipated perspective widening the temporal and comparative horizon of the analysis. In this way some new jobs have shown as war is able in some cases to act like a real catalyst of the politics of welfare. Italy is no exception in this panorama. In this essay authors focus on the following periods 1915-1919 and 1943-1948. Their purpose is to illustrate the ambitious projects followings the wake of the War and to investigate the reasons which promoted in advance such elaborations, and then determined the political failure of it. Reconstructing these two critical steps in the development of the Italian welfare state, they also outline the most general frame of this development from its beginning in the Fifties, as well as they try to delineate a first comparative hypothesis with the German case.
