  • Changing everything and changing nothing. A process based approach in
           managing complex cultural settings
    • Abstract: Simone Cheli
Interventions on people that have faced a recent or a significant migra- tion represent a portion of implementation science where we need to integrate a deep know- ledge of existing guidelines with a specific understanding of the cultural background of such persons. On the one hand, we have to make our style and strategies flexible and adaptable; on the other hand, we have to bear in mind that each and every psychothe- rapy or counseling intervention must be grounded on a personalization principle. The aim of the present study is to define a theoretical framework for the development and application of cognitive interventions with people dealing with a potentially destabili- zing process of migration.

  • Between perception and denial. Escaping from war coun- tries and encounter
           with the Other
    • Abstract: Anna Sabatini Scalmati
The author begins with considering the wars that originate a forced era- dication of an indefinite number of people; she reflects on the pain related to leaving the country of origin, on the difficult decision to undertake a journey along unknown roads where the unpredictable can take place. A journey in search of a land that can lead to the hope of a new life, but also exposes you to serious risks. A new life in which it is not easy to access and where the people are often ignored and radicalized. A new world that exposes them to the risk of losing their cultural roots and measures them with other languages, religions and customs. The author proposes, in the wake of the clinical thou- ght of Bleger and Kaës, to pay close attention not so much to their poor saying but rather to the unsaid part of the immemorial of their experiences. This focus on the unsaid, with "anguished imagination", can bring closer the fragility, the emotional suffering, the voids, the absences, the loss of identity that torments these people and helps them not to lose confidence in themselves. The author also reflects on the difficult encounter with the Other in particular focusing on the theme of the stranger, of the otherness, of the non-me, on the ancient, original fear connected to the hermitage of the human mammal.

  • Systemic-relational approach and intercultural clinic
    • Abstract: Ivy Daure, Samara Elat, Roberta Speziale
This article offers a description of the characteristics and possibilities of applying the systemic relational approach to the setting with migrants; the history of the patients unfolds in the clinical systemic setting becoming a narration, a story that the therapeutic system rewrites together with the migrant system. The anthropological analysis and the careful study of the patient’s metacontext creates a listening environ- ment that amplifies the capacity for dialogue between individuals and leads to a new perspective. The systemic therapist, throughout the narration therapy and, especially, throughout the device of the Interview on the Migration Odyssey, migrates himself from the places of ethnopsychiatry, to the territories of the transcultural approach, rea- ching new therapeutic forms up to the clinical métissage proposed by the most modern intercultural clinician.

  • Maternity elsewhere. The migratory trauma and the protective elements in
           the new context
    • Abstract: Greta Melli
Motherhood constitutes a traumatic-conflictual situation and if carried out in a migration condition it can generate the transmission of traumatic transgenerational elements and the development of psychopathologies. We will report some observations of migrant motherchild couples in Italy to highlight some of the protective factors the new context should have in order to facilitate a good motherhood experience.

  • Group psychological intervention with traumatized asylum seekers. A
preliminary study on the use of group EMDR to promote relisience
    • Abstract: Antonio Onofri, Paola Castelli Gattinara
The authors describe the known effects of forced migration on mental health, in particular Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the symptoms deriving from chronic stress. The paper provides some fundamental principles for the treatment of post- traumatic conditions and specifically for traumatized refugees and asylum seekers. A particular clinical intervention is then described: group therapy with EMDR. A pilot study was conducted to assess the efficacy of EMDR group therapy to reduce PTSD symptoms. An experimental group was confronted with a control group. The results show the greater effectiveness of clinical intervention based on the use of EMDR.

  • Complex trauma and migration. The case of Mohamed
    • Abstract: Alberto Barbieri, Federica Visco-Comandini, Andrea Gragnani, Angelo Maria Saliani
Complex trauma - torture and other serious abuses suffered in the coun- try of origin or along the migratory route - seems to have reached an "epidemic" dimension in the context of migratory flows towards Italy and Europe. In this context it becomes particularly relevant to understand the possible factors favoring the development of the clinical picture that has been introduced by some authors as Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (cPTSD). The clinical case of Mohamed, addressed here with a cognitivist approach both in the aspects of case formulation and phase-oriented treatment (stabilization, processing of traumatic memories, integration) suggests that elements of vulnerability particularly relevant for the development of cPTSD in adult can be some personality styles and specifically those particularly sensitive to rank and competition.

  • Complex trauma and migration. Mohamed
    • Abstract: Emanuela Pasquarelli
Trauma and migration, two aspects that together convoy to extreme vulnerabi- lity. What can the analyst do' The answer is extremely complex, as it involves a series of actions that he should undertake. The starting point is to be confident, "resist" in terms of resilience, do not surrender to the human impulse that the horror of a trauma of this kind makes you feel in the body and mind, remain in intimate connection with his own emotions and the patient’s ones. This involves the need to "feel", before the patient, to function as a container and sounding board of intolerable feelings. The "historical" dimension and the "relational" dimension become in this model fundamental: their role is to restore a narration and to regive to the traumatized patient that sense of cohesion the human being needs for accepting his own psychic truth.

  • Psychopathology of migration. A systemic-relational reflection
    • Abstract: Paolo Zarone, Jessica Lampis
This paper proposes a Systemic-Relational commentary on the article "Complex trauma and migration: the case of Mohamed". After a brief reflection on the social and anthropological issues underlying the migration process our team proposes to frame the migration itself as a critical event within the family life cycle. The treatment in a systemic perspective develops through the contextualization of the symptoms and the reconstruction of the story of the migration of Mohamed and his sons, in search of a new narration that can heal the wounds and restore a sense of continuity to existence.

  • The collaborative dimension as a resource to modulate the psychological
outcomes caused by the loss of work
    • Abstract: Maria Dettori, Maria Giuseppina Mantione, Eleonora Pietropaoli
The loss of work can lead to negative effects that influence multiple levels of an individual’s life: from the purely economic to the psychological one, emotional, social to the more general health. The outcomes of prolonged experiences of suffering and impotence connected to the condition of unemployment can be, at least in part, combined with those situations of threat and danger where the individual is required to fight for their survival. This work aims to open reflections on the opportunity to use interventions mediated by the cooperative system and guided by the construct of intersubjectivity to be added to the more common assistance and support interventions that only represent in part an efficient response to the gravity of the phenomenon.

  • "Game of thrones". The ending of the ending and neverending conflict
    • Abstract: Caterina Selvaggi Onnis
The author studies the global success TV series "Game of Thrones" from the point of view of the systemic theory and from the epistemology of complexity. In today’s show business the tendency is to not put a definite end to the story; this same tendency is being applied in cinematograpghy where the ending is often temporary and the movie is then transformed in a TV series prolonged overtime where the expectations are often neverending. This expressive procedure is adequate according to the author to express the sense of instability that we experience in today’s world.

  • Understanding family belonging through meanings, Differences and cultural
context. The case of the stark family from "Game of Thrones"
    • Abstract: Francesco Serri, Diego Lasio, Jessica Lampis, Alessandra Melis
The authors present a study of the family dynamics of the Starks, one of the main characters from the TV series "Game of Thrones". The analysis is based on the Family Semantic Polarities Theory (Ugazio, 2012) that assigns to the systemic presup- positions, the meanings and the cultural context a supporting function. In addition, the theory suggests that some of the most relevant dimensions of the semantics of belonging, inclusion/exclusion and election/rejection, give shape to the repertoire of the narratives where family episodes are created. Within this plot, each family member builds its positioning, identity and suffering. The complexity and interdependence of the psychological and social factors that come into play in family relationships are discussed and exemplified.
