  • Education to prevent cyber-victims’ suffering. The Law 2017/71.
    • Abstract: Maria Assunta Zanetti, Riccardo M. Colangelo
With the advent of modern forms of communication, children are now able to harass their peers with mobile phones and e-mails: a behaviour known as cyberbullying. The characteristic of the pervasiveness of the phenomenon involves experiences of suffering that often make the cyber-victim unable to react and in some cases can also get to think about committing suicide. Ninety hundred and fifty-nine students aged between 11 and 15 in the provinces of Pavia and Milan filled in a questionnaire to investigate the awareness of the phenomenon and the suffering experiences of the victims. The results will be discussed in the light of the indications of the law 71/2017, recently approved by the Italian Parliament with an educational goal: to prepare the school environment to prevent this phenomenon.

  • Over the victim’s suffering: Throughout bullying, cyberbullying and
           intervention proposals
    • Abstract: Serena Dimitri, Sofia Pedroni, Elisa Donghi
Bullying phenomenon has always happened at schools through the whole world, and it involves thousands of victims every year. Already in 90s its possible psycho-physical consequences for the victims have been studied. Recently, the phenomenon has assumed a new shape: the cyberbullying. Although being differently named, cyberbullying is dynamically similar to bullying: It is still aimed to oppress a person which is considered weaker, but now bullying is favoured by the high diffusion of technologies which magnify its effects and reduce the empathic response of the bully thanks to the distance created by the instrument. The objective of this review is to analyse the suffering of the bullying/cyberbullying victim especially with respect to the psycho-physical effects. The results of research regarding the psycho-physical consequences for the bullying and cyberbullying victims will be discussed by also presenting international evidence-based interventions.

  • Morality distortions as risk factor in bullying and cyberbullying.
    • Abstract: Simona C. S. Caravita, Luca Milani, Giulia Binaghi, Cristiana Apolloni
Studies indicate that morality is important for the explanation of bullying, and that bullying and cyberbullying overlap, although these phenomena are often considered separately. The present study involved 206 adolescents (14-17 years) and was aimed at investigating whether moral acceptability of bullying and other moral dimensions differ in cyberbullying in comparison to bullying. Adolescents’ perceptions of the severity of cyberbullying as compared to bullying did not differ significantly. Nevertheless, off-line bullying elicited higher moral disengagement and moral emotions than cyberbullying. Perceiving bullying as morally acceptable was associated with both online and offline bullying, and with defending the victim but only offline. Moral disengagement was also positively associated with the outsider role only in offline bullying situations. Hence, morality seemed to be more relevant in explaining traditional bullying than cyberbullying. Nevertheless, a moral dilution appears in cyberbullying.

  • Psychometric properties of the Centrality of Event Scale in Italian
           adolescents
    • Abstract: Chiara Ionio, Eleonora Mascheroni, Paola Di Blasio
Stressful and traumatic experiences may become turning points that organize past, present and future experiences and autobiographical memories. The Centrality of Event Scale (CES) measures the extent to which the memory of a highly stressful and traumatic event is central in a person’s life. The present work aimed to translate, adapt and validate the CES in the Italian context, evaluating the psychometric proprieties using a sample of 872 Italian adolescents (60.2% male) aged between 11 and 21 years (M = 16.60, SD = 1.67). The Italian version was proved to be a valid measure for adolescents’ sample in the Italian context. Moreover, significant correlation with the presence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) symptomatology tested by the Impact of Event Scale Revised was found. Our find-ings provided evidence on the validity of the scale for use with adolescent samples, which may contribute for a better understanding of the impact that significant life events may have on them during an important period of their life.

  • Trauma and mental development: Analysis of a case of sexual abuse
    • Abstract: Mirella Montemurro
The present work deals with a case of sexual abuse and prostitution induction perpetrated by the father of a young victim for a long time period from 4 to 23 years. A story that allows to address the issue of psychological consequences of traumatic events. In this case the personality structure seems, to date, it has not organized in a way frankly psychopathological. It will then analyze the psychic functioning of women on the basis of psychoanalytic theory, focusing on the perverse relationship abuser/victim.

  • Talking hands: A workshop experience to mend the emotions of your own
           story
    • Abstract: Cecilia Ragaini, Angela Gammarano, Francesca Cerutti, Alessia Zangari, Federica Bianchi, Martina Branca
Creativity has always been an expressive technique of internal and external experiences of the individual and allows to start an authentic psychological transformative process, encouraging the development of the psychic autonomy. This paper started from the workshop experience "Ricucire la nostra storia" ("Sewing our history"), organized by the cooperative Geco and sponsored by Fondazione Cariplo, in a school located in the suburbs of Milan with a high rate of immigration and family fragility. Through the art of sewing, the children, involved in the project, made creative artifacts, led by autobiographical inputs that facilitated the re-enactment and narration of events and emotions from the past and the present, as well as fantasies about their future. Every meeting helped the children open up to the group, integrate their memories and, as a consequence, increase their self-awareness.

  • The "broken" child: Current aspects of the child maltreatment that the
           paediatricians should know
    • Abstract: Pietro Ferrara, Annamaria Sbordone, Ester Del Vescovo, Francesca Ianniello, Antonio Ruggiero
Child abuse and neglect is a common problem whose outcomes can be very harmful and damaging to the victims. Since it is not easy to recognize the conditions of child abuse and its prevalence certainly is underestimated and the identification of the real number of maltreated children is a challenge. Moreover, as society and culture we live in are constantly and progressively changing, new configurations of child abuse and neglect are emerging. Because of the great impact these situations can have on physical and psychological health of children, every paediatrician should be trained to recognize them and to play a role in supporting the well-being of each child.
