  • Activities and models of university technology transfer
    • Abstract: Alessandra Colombelli, Elettra D’Amico, Emilio Paolucci, Riccardo Ricci
Universities perform different technology transfer activities to fulfil their ‘third mission’ of contribution to economic development. We analyse these with an explorative quantitative survey interpreting the results with scientific literature. We find the following university technology transfer activities: research commercialization, entrepreneurship education, creation of an entrepreneurial climate, support to technology development, start-up creation and growth, and academic engagement. We investigate the heterogeneity in the accomplishment of these activities with a quantitative survey undertaken within a Task Force on Innovation of the association of universities Cesaer and we find three main models of university technology transfer. A first one with a mature model, a second one with an incomplete model, and a third one with a developing model with a central, secondary and quasicentral role in the ecosystem where they reside respectively.

  • University contests across europe: a comparison and a typology proposal
    • Abstract: Chiara Bonomo, Guido Bortoluzzi, Stephen Mbieke Ndula
Almost every university or research center organizes idea contests or business plan competitions. This article highlights, on the one hand, the vast variety of such kind of competitions across Europe. On the other hand, it aims to propose a new typology to classify such contests. We do this for two reasons: to allow scholars to better classify and study such events that, despite having similar labels, might be quite different in terms of their content; and to allow organizers - such as universities, incubators, accelerators and research centers - to increase the level of consistency between the implicit and explicit goals of the competitions they organize and the internal and external structure of such competitions.

  • University and technology transfer: the role of university incubators
    • Abstract: Filippo Giordano, Jacopo Di Domenico
Business incubators represent a widely known and well-developed reality, especially in industrialised countries. They became famous as an effective tool to strengthen the economy and have developed over time giving rise to different organisations, characterised by similar missions but different business models. In this context, the aim of this work is to analyse one of these specifications, which are the university incubators. By means of a deep review of existing literature, which has also allowed to identify and highlight the main areas of research and when and where they have been discussed, we have identified the most popular business models for the university incubators and their key success factors. After a representation of the Italian situation, which provides evidence of the magnitude of the phenomenon in the country and an attempt to perform a statistical analysis, in conclusion we outline some possible opportunities for thought, inspired also by international literature.

  • Good places for innovation. a study on the location of innovative
           start-ups in italy
    • Abstract: Roberto Antonietti, Francesca Gambarotto
Innovative start-up is a tool to transform knowledge in new innovative products/services. Only during the last years, the Italian Government has launched a policy to support the innovative start-up process. Nevertheless, little attention is given to those environmental features that foster this creative process. Using the start-up register of Unioncamere and the new territorial disaggregation of travel-to-work areas (Istat), we investigate the spatial distribution of innovative start-ups and the elements that affect their birth and location. Our descriptive analysis shows that innovative start-ups locate mostly in large and largemedium urban areas in the North of Italy. This depends on the variety of activities and specializations that these urban contexts offer, the co-location of particular actors like universities and incubators and on the trade openness of the urban economy.

  • University-industry collaboration: results on eco-innovation
    • Abstract: Valentina De Marchi, Eleonora Di Maria, Katharina Spraul
The study analyzes the characteristics and results of industry-university (I-U) collaboration related to innovation oriented to sustainability, based on the analysis of an original database of more than 350 consulting and research contracts carried out by more than 70 professors specialized in disciplines related to environmental sustainability at the University of Padua (2008- 2012 period). It emerges that the economic and financial performance of collaborating companies is positively associated with collaboration with the University; the higher the number of contracts, the better the economic performance. This advantage is greater for smaller, nonmanufacturing companies located outside Veneto. On the contrary, the involvement of professors with companies to support environmental innovation does not contribute to better research performance, measured in terms of publications. The characteristics of the professor’s network, on the other hand, have an impact on his research performance.

  • Impact of the university of padova in the development of local economy and
in the entrepreneurship of its graduates
    • Abstract: Silvia Blasi, Silvia Rita Sedita
In the United States, the performance of Universities is also measured in the ability to churn out important businesses. In Italy the role of universities as the cradle of entrepreneurship has never been emphasized. In this article we discuss if the university is a marginal actor or if the society must change the perception towards it, from the cradle of scientific knowledge to an incubator of entrepreneurship. In particular, the article reflects on the impact of the University of Padua in the development of the local economy and in the development of business creation processes by its graduates. In order to deepen the phenomenon, we intersected information related to graduates and to companies; in addition, between March and May 2017, we conducted a survey that involved 315 companies, created by UniPD graduates, selected through a stratified sampling by type of company and time of foundation.

  • A dynamic perspective to the analysis of the spin-off life cycle
    • Abstract: Annalisa Caloffi, Francesca Gambarotto, Silvia Rita Sedita
The paper aims to contribute to the understanding of the nature of technology transfer processes, by investigating the case of academic spin-offs. Although this mechanism of technology transfer is among the most studied in the literature, we think that some of its peculiarities deserve a "plus" of attention. In particular, we investigate the evolutionary trajectories of spin-off and produce evidence coming from multiple sources. First, we conducted an exploratory survey which informed us of the main features of the University of Padova spin-offs, second, we conducted some in depth interviews and applied a content analysis, third, we mapped the critical junctures of four spin-off studied in detail through the case study methodology.

  • Technology transfer and political science: the case of sherpa srl, a
           university of padova spin-off
    • Abstract: Patrizia Messina
In the Fordist concept of development, "technology transfer" refers almost exclusively to the production of patents and spin-offs coming from the high-tech intensive disciplines, typical of polytechnics, aimed in general at industrial production. On the contrary, within a knowledge economy, technology transfer is understood mainly as "sharing of codified knowledge" and concerns the entire range of applied scientific knowledge, i.e. capable of generating innovation in the production processes of the well-being of the community. In this second meaning of the term, studies on local development policies have allowed the development of an "expert knowledge" able to accompany local actors in a collaborative path of design and implementation of development strategies in the context of processes of participatory policy design. The essay focuses on the experience gained in the field in this regard, presenting the case of Sherpa srl, a spin-off of the University of Padova.

  • Entrepreneurial university and social innovation in milan and venice
    • Abstract: Maurizio Busacca
This essay aims at investigating the relationship between social innovation, university and the city. To reach this goal, the article studies in depth some case studies on innovative practices promoted in Milan and Venice. The article highlights the importance of the relationship between university and social innovation and the prevailing approach to study it based on the triple helix model university-industry-government. The article reveals the limits of this approach and proposes to develop a different analytical approach, more useful and usable to investigate the quality of the processes and actors. Here we adopt the perspective of the city as a regulating group of the economy, developed starting from the works of Arnaldo Bagnasco and Patrick Le Galès on the new political economy of the cities. This perspective offers many learning and reveals some contradictions on the relationship between university and social innovation practices: it reduces the role of the university as an institutional actor and emphasizes the role of academics, which act as "leaven" of the pluralism in urban governance.
