  • Ambivalence. In the shadows of digital labor
    • Abstract: Francesca Coin, Marco Marrone
In 2013 Trebor Scholz edited a book titled Digital Labor: The Internet as Playground and Factory (Routledge). The book collected contributions by some of the most innovative and eclectic scholars of digital work and highlighted the most important trends and implications of digital labor in the current times. The main theme was the transformation of labor mediated by the digital technologies, at a time when technology hybridises every aspect of existence. The debate highlighted some unresolved issues in the debate concerning the digital economy, first and foremost the role of rentiers and unpaid labor within the digital technologies, as an expression of the ability to extract information from millions of consumers and to use it as a condition for defending strategic positions in the market. This paper focuses precisely on the recent transformations and interpretations of the digital technologies, and analyses the tendency to interpret the net as a dystopian device, underlining the ambivalent role played by automation and technology in the social imaginary.

  • The digital platform economy and the challenges it poses to labour law
    • Abstract: Patrizia Tullini
According to the classical analytic categories (continuity/discontinuity; complementary/substitutive) and putting aside the polarizing public and scientific debates, the powerful impact of the digitalization of individual/collective dimensions of work on the protection of workers’ rights is undeniable. This paper will examine the juridical implications arising from these digital platforms, their effect on labor market and the distortional phenomena that are currently emerging: a "race to the bottom" for competition, social dumping, digital "giging", accumulation of sensitive personal data, to name a few. Finally, this paper will examine the question of the juridical status applicable to the workers engaging in this digital labour market and the new digital rights that are emerging in the legislative and comparative jurisprudential scope.

  • Technological change and labour. the employment impact of industry 4.0
    • Abstract: Giancarlo Corò, Dejan Pejcic
This article analyses the employment impacts of the latest generation of digital technologies, with attention to the applications referred to the Industry 4.0. The idea that automation technologies and digital platforms replace work is as intuitive as it is wrong. Indeed, it is not the demand for work to be lacking, but the labour supply capacity to adapt to technological changes and to face the organizational transformations and social imbalances that these changes entail. First of all, we review the recent literature that has investigated the relationship between technological innovation and labour, then we discuss the results of an original research carried out on a large sample of Venetian companies. The aim of the research is the understanding of the employment impacts of Industry 4.0 technologies. The results show the companies that adopt these technologies express a higher demand for jobs, explaining 75% of the employment increases that occurred during the period.

  • The hybrid jobs and the management of work
    • Abstract: Paolo Gubitta
The growing digitization of production processes causes the transformation of work, which is taking place in all industries and is involving every professional activity. This paper introduces a definition of hybrid job and analyses some examples of hybrid jobs in the manufacture industry, in the healthcare system and in the knowledge intensive business services. Then, the effects on well-known variables of job design and organization of work are presented. Finally, the paper discusses the new challenges for the redesign of recurrent training of workers.

  • Industrial union, contracting and new manufacture. Ires Veneto study
    • Abstract: Vladimiro Soli
The research by Ires Veneto is inspired by the questions posed by the processes of Industry 4.0. The analysis focuses on the nature of innovation within manufacturing companies and on the effects in terms of work organization, performance rules and the role of the trade union. Starting from the literature on the subject, four case studies are carried out on Veneto companies with a good innovative profile, to allow delegates and trade unionists to reflect on the changes that take place in their factories and how the trade union can effectively respond to new challenges.

  • Transformations of work and youth labour market policies
    • Abstract: Lilli Casano
The article traces recent reforms addressing the main school-to-work transition tools (in particular apprenticeships, traineeships, alternation schemes) trying to suggest possible research and reform developments that are more in line with the renewed centrality of the territorial dimension and a truly "participatory" governance of the labour market, in order to build the conditions of the "employability" of young people, without losing sight of the territorial and institutional constraints.

  • The impact of inter-firm networks on firm performance: the italian case
    • Abstract: Chiara Burlina
This study investigates a new policy implemented in Italy from 2009, i.e. Inter-Firm Networks (Ifn), and the impact on the economic performance of Italian firms between 2010-2015. The novelty of this policy is to relax some of the characteristics of industrial districts, the most prominent form of firms’ aggregation in Italy, such as geographical proximity and industry belonging, and allows firms from different regions and sectors to cooperate together for a common economic aim. The purpose of this work is twofold: the first part is aimed to understand if it is worth for Italian firms to participate to an Ifn in terms of economic growth and profitability. The second part explores which are the characteristics of the network that positively affect the performance of firms belonging to an Ifn. The empirical analysis is based on about 4,000 Italian firms, of which more a half joined an Ifn in 2013. Results highlight the positive effect of the Ifn on firms’ growth, and among the peculiar characteristics, internationalization scope turns out to be the most relevant one.
