           desired

    • Authors: Shohei Mori; Hideo Saito
Abstract: Over 20 years have passed since a free-viewpoint video technology has been proposed with which a user's viewpoint can be freely set up in a reconstructed three-dimensional space of a target scene photographed by multi-view cameras. This technology allows us to capture and reproduce the real world as recorded. Once we capture the world in a digital form, we can modify it as augmented reality (i.e., placing virtual objects in the digitized real world). Unlike this concept, the augmented world allows us to see through real objects by synthesizing the backgrounds that cannot be observed in our raw perspective directly. The key idea is to generate the background image using multi-view cameras, observing the backgrounds at different positions and seamlessly overlaying the recovered image in our digitized perspective. In this paper, we review such desired view-generation techniques from the perspective of free-view point image generation and discuss challenges and open problems through a case study of our implementations.

  • Non-linear contour-based multidirectional intra coding

    • Authors: Thorsten Laude; Jan Tumbrägel, Marco Munderloh, Jörn Ostermann
Abstract: Intra coding is an essential part of all video coding algorithms and applications. Additionally, intra coding algorithms are predestined for an efficient still image coding. To overcome limitations in existing intra coding algorithms (such as linear directional extrapolation, only one direction per block, small reference area), we propose non-linear Contour-based Multidirectional Intra Coding. This coding mode is based on four different non-linear contour models, on the connection of intersecting contours and on a boundary recall-based contour model selection algorithm. The different contour models address robustness against outliers for the detected contours and evasive curvature changes. Additionally, the information for the prediction is derived from already reconstructed pixels in neighboring blocks. The achieved coding efficiency is superior to those of related works from the literature. Compared with the closest related work, BD rate gains of 2.16% are achieved on average.

  • A technical framework for automatic perceptual evaluation of singing
           quality

    • Authors: Chitralekha Gupta; Haizhou Li, Ye Wang
Abstract: Human experts evaluate singing quality based on many perceptual parameters such as intonation, rhythm, and vibrato, with reference to music theory. We proposed previously the Perceptual Evaluation of Singing Quality (PESnQ) framework that incorporated acoustic features related to these perceptual parameters in combination with the cognitive modeling concept of the telecommunication standard Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality to evaluate singing quality. In this study, we present further the study of the PESnQ framework to approximate the human judgments. First, we find that a linear combination of the individual perceptual parameter human scores can predict their overall singing quality judgment. This provides us with a human parametric judgment equation. Next, the prediction of the individual perceptual parameter scores from the PESnQ acoustic features show a high correlation with the respective human scores, which means more meaningful feedback to learners. Finally, we compare the performance of early fusion and late fusion of the acoustic features in predicting the overall human scores. We find that the late fusion method is superior to that of the early fusion method. This work underlines the importance of modeling human perception in automatic singing quality assessment.

  • Engagement recognition by a latent character model based on multimodal
           listener behaviors in spoken dialogue

    • Authors: Koji Inoue; Divesh Lala, Katsuya Takanashi, Tatsuya Kawahara
Abstract: Engagement represents how much a user is interested in and willing to continue the current dialogue. Engagement recognition will provide an important clue for dialogue systems to generate adaptive behaviors for the user. This paper addresses engagement recognition based on multimodal listener behaviors of backchannels, laughing, head nodding, and eye gaze. In the annotation of engagement, the ground-truth data often differs from one annotator to another due to the subjectivity of the perception of engagement. To deal with this, we assume that each annotator has a latent character that affects his/her perception of engagement. We propose a hierarchical Bayesian model that estimates both engagement and the character of each annotator as latent variables. Furthermore, we integrate the engagement recognition model with automatic detection of the listener behaviors to realize online engagement recognition. Experimental results show that the proposed model improves recognition accuracy compared with other methods which do not consider the character such as majority voting. We also achieve online engagement recognition without degrading accuracy.

  • Machine learning for media compression: challenges and opportunities

    • Authors: Amir Said
Abstract: Machine learning (ML) has been producing major advances in several technological fields and can have a significant impact on media coding. However, fast progress can only happen if the ML techniques are adapted to match the true needs of compression. In this paper, we analyze why some straightforward applications of ML tools to compression do not really address its fundamental problems, which explains why they have been yielding disappointing results. From an analysis of why compression can be quite different from other ML applications, we present some new problems that are technically challenging, but that can produce more significant advances. Throughout the paper, we present examples of successful applications to video coding, discuss practical difficulties that are specific to media compression, and describe related open research problems.

  • The artificial intelligence renaissance: deep learning and the road to
           human-Level machine intelligence

    • Authors: Kar-Han Tan; Boon Pang Lim
Abstract: In this paper we look at recent advances in artificial intelligence. Decades in the making, a confluence of several factors in the past few years has culminated in a string of breakthroughs in many longstanding research challenges. A number of problems that were considered too challenging just a few years ago can now be solved convincingly by deep neural networks. Although deep learning appears to be reducing the algorithmic problem solving to a matter of data collection and labeling, we believe that many insights learned from ‘pre-Deep Learning’ works still apply and will be more valuable than ever in guiding the design of novel neural network architectures.

  • New frontiers in cognitive content curation and moderation

    • Authors: Chung-Sheng Li; Guanglei Xiong, Emmanuel Munguia Tapia
Abstract: Social media, online forums, and online e-commerce heavily encourage and rely on content posted by humans to attract visitors and enable participation in their sites. However, inappropriate user-generated content in the form of violent, disturbing, infringing or fraudulent materials has become a serious challenge for public safety, law enforcement, and business integrity. It has also become increasingly difficult for end users to locate the most relevant content from the huge amount and variety of potentially interesting content selections. Therefore, content moderation and curation serve the two key purposes of protection and promotion to ensure compliance to site policy, local tastes or norms, or even the law, as well as the creation of an entertaining and compelling user experience via high-quality content. In this paper, we survey the governance, processes, standards, and technologies developed and deployed within the industry. The primary challenge faced today by the industry is the scalability of the governance model in the moderation and curation process. A symbiotic human-machine collaboration framework has emerged to address the burdensome and time-consuming nature of manual moderation and curation. We illustrate how this framework can be extended to optimize the outcome by focusing on applying moderation and curation on content that has not been previously moderated or curated.

  • Noise masking method based on an effective ratio mask estimation in
           Gammatone channels

    • Authors: Feng Bao; Waleed H. Abdulla
Abstract: In computational auditory scene analysis, the accurate estimation of binary mask or ratio mask plays a key role in noise masking. An inaccurate estimation often leads to some artifacts and temporal discontinuity in the synthesized speech. To overcome this problem, we propose a new ratio mask estimation method in terms of Wiener filtering in each Gammatone channel. In the reconstruction of Wiener filter, we utilize the relationship of the speech and noise power spectra in each Gammatone channel to build the objective function for the convex optimization of speech power. To improve the accuracy of estimation, the estimated ratio mask is further modified based on its adjacent time–frequency units, and then smoothed by interpolating with the estimated binary masks. The objective tests including the signal-to-noise ratio improvement, spectral distortion and intelligibility, and subjective listening test demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared with the reference methods.

  • Global and local uncertainty principles for signals on graphs

    • Authors: Nathanael Perraudin; Benjamin Ricaud, David I Shuman, Pierre Vandergheynst
Abstract: Uncertainty principles such as Heisenberg's provide limits on the time-frequency concentration of a signal, and constitute an important theoretical tool for designing linear signal transforms. Generalizations of such principles to the graph setting can inform dictionary design, lead to algorithms for reconstructing missing information via sparse representations, and yield new graph analysis tools. While previous work has focused on generalizing notions of spreads of graph signals in the vertex and graph spectral domains, our approach generalizes the methods of Lieb in order to develop uncertainty principles that provide limits on the concentration of the analysis coefficients of any graph signal under a dictionary transform. One challenge we highlight is that the local structure in a small region of an inhomogeneous graph can drastically affect the uncertainty bounds, limiting the information provided by global uncertainty principles. Accordingly, we suggest new notions of locality, and develop local uncertainty principles that bound the concentration of the analysis coefficients of each atom of a localized graph spectral filter frame in terms of quantities that depend on the local structure of the graph around the atom's center vertex. Finally, we demonstrate how our proposed local uncertainty measures can improve the random sampling of graph signals.

  • Spatio-temporal multidimensional collective data analysis for providing
           comfortable living anytime and anywhere

    • Authors: Naonori Ueda; Futoshi Naya
Abstract: Machine learning is a promising technology for analyzing diverse types of big data. The Internet of Things era will feature the collection of real-world information linked to time and space (location) from all sorts of sensors. In this paper, we discuss spatio-temporal multidimensional collective data analysis to create innovative services from such spatio-temporal data and describe the core technologies for the analysis. We describe core technologies about smart data collection and spatio-temporal data analysis and prediction as well as a novel approach for real-time, proactive navigation in crowded environments such as event spaces and urban areas. Our challenge is to develop a real-time navigation system that enables movements of entire groups to be efficiently guided without causing congestion by making near-future predictions of people flow. We show the effectiveness of our navigation approach by computer simulation using artificial people-flow data.

  • Cooperative spectrum sensing based on adaptive activation of energy and
preamble detector for cognitive radio networks

    • Authors: Ashish Rauniyar; Soo Young Shin
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a new cooperative spectrum sensing method based on adaptive activation of energy detector (ED) and preamble detector (PD) for cognitive radio networks. The ED performance is highly degraded under low signal to noise ratio and noise uncertainty condition. To alleviate the problem of ED and increase the sensing performance, we have used adaptive activation of energy efficient ED and reliable PD. As the first step of our proposed method, we have used ED to take a decision in the clear region where the detector can easily make its own local decision. There are two thresholds for the measured energy in the first step. If the sensed energy in the first step is between these two thresholds, the second step which involves the activation of cooperative PD is triggered to make an appropriate decision on the presence or absence of primary users's signal. Otherwise, the second step detector PD is not activated. In this way, we can enhance the detection performance and energy efficiency by taking the collaborative advantages of ED and PD at the same time. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed method as compared with conventional schemes.

  • The origin of digital information devices: the Silicon Audio and its
           family

    • Authors: Akihiko Sugiyama; Masahiro Iwadare
Abstract: This paper presents the origin of digital information devices, the Silicon Audio, and its family. The Silicon Audio is the digital counterpart of the Walkman and the ancestor of the iPod. It employs the MPEG / Audio Layer II algorithm for data compression, which was standardized by ISO (International Standardization Organization)/ IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). A semiconductor memory card is equipped with to store the compressed signal. Since it has no mechanical movement, it is robust against shocks and vibrations that had been a serious problem for portable audio players. The background of the development, implementations, challenges toward a commercial product, and impact on audio players as well as personal information devices are discussed with its family including a video derivative, the Silicon View.
