L.) in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Case Reports of Two Patients
    • Authors: S Javed Ali, Mohammad Shahid Khan, Mohd Nayab, Abdul Aziz
      Pages: 1 - 3
Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis is a common disorder related with pain and deformity with a prevalence of 0.5–1% in general population; and with an estimate 5–50 per 100000 new cases recorded annually. The present line of treatment in conventional medicine depends on the use of disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) such as methotrexate, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), glucocorticoids or surgery. But the above said treatment methods are known to be associated with one or more side effects. Unani medicine is known to cure chronic diseases with minimal side effects using herbal medicine and different regimens. In the present paper, the case studies of two female patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis treated with massage with Unani herbal drug is reported. Keywords: rheumatoid arthritis, chronic diseases, Unani medicine, herbal drugCite this ArticleKhan MS, Ali SJ, Nayab M  et al. • Authors: Kajaria Divya
      Pages: 4 - 7
Abstract: Herbs are extensively hunted these days for their medicinal potential. Isolation and purification of active phytoconstituent as drug is relatively old concept in the pharmaceutical field. Now scientists are more concerned for the wholesome use of herbs. Therefore, herbs are searched with various angles at several parameters. This paper presents a detailed description about one of such medicinally important herb named Shirish in Ayurvedic system of medicine and as Albizia lebbeck in botany. In Ayurveda, it is mainly used as antitoxin or antipoisonous drug. It is mainly indicated in allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, urticaria etc. Analysis of phytoconstituents showed the presence of saponins, glycosides, tannins etc., and absence of steroids. Catechin is the main phytochemical responsible for its antihistaminic property. Keywords: Shirish, antitoxin, antiallergic, catechinCite this ArticleKajaria D. • Indigenous Knowledge (IK) of Wild Edible Plants (WEPs) and Impacts of
           Resettlement in Delanta, Northern Ethiopia
    • Authors: M Meragiaw Meragiaw, Z Asfaw, M Argaw
      Pages: 8 - 26
Abstract: The present study was conducted in Delanta (Ethiopia) to document the use and management of wild edible plants (WEPs) and to assess the impacts of the 1984/85 resettlement program on these resources and associated indigenous knowledge (IK). Data were collected from 72 informants in six study sites through semi-structured interviews, guided field walk, simulation and group discussion, and analyzed using standard ethnobotanical tools including abundance score, ranking and comparison. In total, 49 WEPs including nutraceutical species belonging to 40 genera and 29 families were documented. Herbs accounted for 50.9% of the total species and fruits took the lead. The majority of the WEPs were used for other purposes. Multiple use analysis showed that fodder (51.2%) and fuel woods (44.2%) were the most frequently mentioned uses. The resettlement program had both positive and negative impacts on rehabilitation and retention IK. More of the plant knowledge was held by permanent residents than that of returnees. The findings inform that efforts need to be directed for in situ conservation of the multipurpose and threatened plants species. Keywords: Delanta, indigenous knowledge, resettlement, wild edible plantsCite this ArticleMeragiaw M, Asfaw Z, Argaw M. • To Evaluate the Role of Anupana in Ayurvedic Treatment
    • Authors: Tanwar Ankur
      Pages: 27 - 30
Abstract: Ayurveda is the most ancient science of life. The main aim of Ayurveda is “Swasthasya Swasthaya Rakshanam” which means to maintain the health of healthy person & “Aturasya Vikara Prashamanam” means to cure the diseases of diseased person; the concept of Anupana is beneficial for both the condition. It is one of the unique fundamental principles of Ayurveda under the title of drug administration. Anupana is a liquid material which is taken along with or after drug or food.  The present study evaluated the role of Anupana in Ayurvedic treatment. The study was undertaken on 20 female patients of Pandu (anaemia) which were randomly divided into two groups—A & B. In Group A, navayas churna 125 mg with madhu, purnnava mandur 250 mg with takra & haritaki churna with usnodaka was given. In Group B, same medicine was given without any specific Anupana as mentioned in the text of Ayurveda. The haemoglobin value before & after the treatment were measured & assessed to compare for significance. The results showed that relief was more in group A as compared to group B. It can be concluded that treatment with the specific Anupana was most effective. Keywords: Anupana, Ayurveda, pandu, anaemiaCite this ArticleTanwar A.
