  • Social and Physical Entrapments of Women in Bapsi Sidhwa’s Ice-Candy Man
           and Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things

    • Abstract: The study highlights the social and physical entrapments of women in two novels: Bapsi Sidhwa’s Ice-Candy Man and Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things. Both writers belong to two different cultures. Bapsi Sidhwa is a Punjabi, Parsi, Pakistani novelist while Arundhati Roy is an Indian Author. Regardless of their different cultures, they have discussed similar issues faced by women of their contemporary societies. This case study adopted exploratory research framework to gather data and undergo its content analysis from the text of two selected novels. The findings explicate that woman exploitation can be observed evidently among different societies irrespective of any culture, religion, caste or creed. In both novels, women are represented as shallow creatures and they are utterly victimized physically as well as emotionally. They are raped and beaten brutally by males being their unbidden masters. Sidhwa and Roy enlighten the plight of women in their novels, though slight elements of unjust maltreatment of the male characters can also be seen at many places.

  • Language Learning Strategies Used by Male and Female Literature Students
           at Post Graduate Level

    • Abstract: Language learning strategies play an important role in acquiring language proficiency skills at different levels of learning. The current study being quantitative in nature, has been carried out to investigate the role played by language learning strategies (LLS) while learning English literature at post graduate level. Therefore 160 students from three different institutions were randomly selected to participate in this survey-oriented project. An instrument originally created by Oxford (1980–1990) about Strategy inventory of learning a language (SILL) version 0.7 and further modified after piloting was distributed among the students. The findings of the sturdy reveal positive relation of strategies among the students while the females surpassed over male participants in adopting strategic use of learning. Obtained data show that there was no significant similarity found among them; but lot of differences observed regarding use of different strategies. The females were most frequent users of memory, cognitive, affective, meta-cognitive and social strategies while male learners were involved in using compensatory, cognitive and also the active users of meta-cognitive strategies. As far as difficulties during learning English literature are concerned: a lot of major aspects of language learning strategies were observed that need to be solved. On the whole, students at postgraduate level are aware of LLS and utilize these strategies while learning English language and literature.

  • Translating and Rewriting Chinese Proverbs: A Case Study of Howard
           Goldblatt’s English Translation of Mo Yan’s “Shengsi Pilao”

    • Abstract: Howard Goldblatt’s translation of Mo Yan’s novels remains controversial because he has made various changes in his translation. As a result, a lot of original messages in Mo Yan’s novels were not completely conveyed. In this paper, this author compared and analyzed several examples of Chinese proverbs selected from Mo Yan’s novel “Shengsi Pilao” and their translation in “Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out” translated by Howard Goldblatt, in an attempt to investigate how Goldblatt coped with linguistic and cultural challenges in the examples. Findings indicate that based on rewriting, Goldblatt has basically used six translation methods to translate Mo Yan’s Chinese proverbs in the novel into English and his transcreation which was previously neglected can be uncovered in his translation of the proverbs. This study can help other translators reflect on how to translate proverbs in other Chinese literary works into English and provide valuable references to researchers who intend to conduct research into this area.

  • Keeping Conversation Rolling by Iraqi EFL University Learners

    • Abstract: The present study sheds some light on the conversation as an optimal form of communication. Also, it tries to illustrate Iraqi EFL learners’ aptitude for producing conversation and specifying the errors types committed by them in its progression. To accomplish these purposes, it is hypothesized that the learners may face formidable problems in sharing their experiences with each other and are unable to keep a conversation going. In the face of such problems, a sample of (50) learners is selected to a diagnostic test administration. The subjects are at the Fourth year, Department of English, College of Education for Humanities, University of Babylon. Data analysis has proved that the leaners encounter more difficulty on the production level than the recognition one. This manifestation is manifested itself in the number of the learners’ correct responses as compared with their incorrect ones on both levels.

  • Imperialist Ideology and Kurtz in Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now

    • Abstract: This article will argue that the tragedy of both Kurtzes is that they are trapped in the perverse logic of the ideology of imperialism. The ideology of imperialism assumes the absolute superiority of the oppressor. It is self-contradictory because it is based upon classifying the oppressed as morally inferior, but maintaining imperialism requires systematic barbarity, which morally degrades the imperialist. The historical response of successful imperialists to this has been a special kind of hypocrisy embodied in an attempt at creating distance between actor and act, perpetrator and victim. This article will make the case that both Kurtzes are destroyed by their moral integrity. They honestly admit their depravity to themselves. This grants them great power in facilitating imperial strategic aims but forces them to acknowledge the lie at the heart of imperialist ideology that legitimized the strategy, rendering their acts purposeless. The honesty of their conduct undermines the imperialist ideology. The honesty of their undertakings causes the managers to increasingly perceive Kurtz as a threat and identify him with the ‘savages’ they are supposed to be ‘civilizing’. Kurtz challenges the hypocrisy of the ideology of imperialism precisely insofar as he helps it achieve its true aims.

  • A Comparative Study of Competing Discursive Construction of South China
           Sea Disputes in the Chinese and US English-Language Newspapers

    • Abstract: This study examines the discursive construction of South China Sea dispute in China Daily and The New York Times from April 2016 to December 2017. Drawing on Van Dijk’s account of critical discourse analysis and the linguistic framework of Appraisal theory (Martin & White, 2005), this study investigates how three social actors in the dispute, namely China, United States, Philippines, are differently constructed with the strategic use of attitude resources in the two newspapers. The corpus analyzed consists of 45 newspaper texts from China Daily and 49 newspaper texts from The New York Times. The analysis reveals competing discursive construction of social actors that constitute positive us-representation and negative other-representation in the two newspapers. For example, China Daily constructs China as a peace-loving country, insisting on the peaceful means and the cooperation with ASEAN and other claimant countries to resolve the dispute, whereas The New York Times depicts China as threat, hegemony and provocation. Such competing discursive construction not only reflects the ideological stance of two newspapers, but also functions to legitimize their countries’ policies and decisions in the South China Sea dispute.

  • Translating and Representing ‘The Aftermath of Daesh’: A Rhetorical
           Semiotic Study of Some Mosuli Artists’ Works

    • Abstract: Daesh has profoundly affected the psychological statues of Iraqis; they sacrificed thousands of souls and martyrs to liberate their country from a savage enemy. This study has, therefore, a psychological perspective. It tackles the reflections of agony, suffering and poverty in the behaviour of the artists, writers and translators. Iraqi artists have represented their suffering and pains in their paintings. They encoded the symbols, colours and semiotic mosaics in association with rhetorical connotations. Mosul is the city most affected by the terrorist acts during the war. Therefore, the study has selected four Mosuli artists who drew, painted and visually documented that period. Translation does not limit itself to the study and analysis of verbal/linguistic texts; it also tackles the extra-linguistic signs and codes of the source language to transfer them into the target language appropriately and in a way that seems intelligible to the readers or the spectators of these paintings. The research questions are based on a set of issues: Are the teachers of translation able to construct a bridge between Iraqi society, European society and other societies' These paintings have socio-cultural symbols specific to Iraqi society. Are the teachers of translation able to come out from the shell of the linguistic texts and move towards the semiotic and visual texts'

  • Virtual Reality in TEFL Context, Instructors’ Perspectives in a
           Saudi University

    • Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore instructors’ perspectives in a Saudi university about using virtual reality in TEFL context. The sample of the study consisted of 6 instructors randomly selected from different faculties affiliated to Al-Baha University. The instrument of the study is based on semi-structured interviews administered to the targeted participants. The researcher used SWAT analysis to process the elicited data. The Findings of the study indicate that strength points of using virtual reality to teach English are VR is exciting, authentic, and more interactive learning style for English language learners as compared to conventional learning style, weakness points are financial setbacks of implementing VR and the inexperienced instructors who need training to implement VR to teach English. The results indicate that there is only one main threat of using VR to teach the English language in the Saudi context, namely that VR could be a distraction for some students. This study generates new insights into processes of adopting VR to teach English language in the Saudi context and the potential strength, weakness, opportunity, and threats to such adoption in the target university. The study concluded with recommendations to the concerned institutions for the betterment of using VR in EFL contexts. The researcher suggests further studies to be conducted in similar contexts for using VR in EFL institutions.

  • Contextualizing Toni Morrison in Nepalese Classroom of Diversity: A
           Pedagogic Approach for Students of M.A. in English

    • Abstract: This article is based on my experience of teaching Nepalese students, who are from different socio-cultural backgrounds. The study proposes a pedagogy through participatory and interactive reading strategy (PAIRS) for Tribhuvan University’s 4th Semester Graduate class of English Literature on the course of ‘Single Author’ (ENG 582), by making them engaged in dialogues, both in oral and written form, in which they will share and exchange their ideas on literary texts of Toni Morrison by investigating on some specific implications of the author’s vision on the issues of differences, prevalent in America. The proposed pedagogy is intended for raising students’ critical consciousness of the contemporary world’s most pertinent issues of identity of minorities, which Nepalese students face in their day to day living experiences. Thus, it is hoped that an individual and collective engagement would be developed in students for dealing with what is both historical and immediate, and global and local. By practicing PAIRS, students would develop self reflection on their biases that would make them critical of their culturally imbedded ideas and that would gradually make them empathetic to differences. The proposed pedagogy is not for demonstrating a teacher’s knowledge on the author’s works by critical and theoretical tools, but contextualizing the author in Nepalese socio-cultural conditions through the platform of a classroom of diverse thoughts for the students’ better understanding of the world, enriched with ‘differences’. The study further contributes to new pedagogy of English Studies for Non-western students by widening the field of comparative cultural studies, and thus enhancing the scope of comparative literature.
