  • From the Professoriat to the Precariat
    • Authors: Doughty; Howard A.
      Pages: 1 - 22
Abstract: Social class lies at the core of much that Marx said about the “laws of history.” Class conflict was to be the means whereby capitalism would be overthrown, superseded by a revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat and, subsequently, by a communist society in which alienation and exploitation would be replaced by emancipation and the full flowering of human potential as both individuals and a species. The capitalist system, however, has proven remarkably resilient and resourceful. The welfare state ameliorated extreme economic distress, popular culture sapped revolutionary energy, and “identity politics” fragmented political radicalism. Meanwhile, the definition of social class itself became problematic. A reorganized labor market produced divisions between the traditional working class and precarious workers and, in colleges and universities, the old “professoriat” was joined by a new “precariat” that now does over two-thirds of the teaching. This trend is part of the “corporatizing” of higher education and the “neoliberal” restructuring of work in late capitalism. Intellectuals, once the theoretical “vanguard of the proletariat,” are now practical leaders too. Educational worker militancy has implications for the academy and class tensions throughout society. It raises the question: Was Marx wrong, or has he just not yet been proven right'

  • Introduce Self-Paced Learning in Military Technical Trades Training
    • Authors: Wang; Jun, Egudo, Richard
      Pages: 23 - 32
Abstract: Using a case study, this article identifies the factors that are important in the effective implementation of mixing self-paced and lock-step learning (a specific type of blended learning (BL)) in the context of training military technicians. Due to budget and time constraints, the training authorities in most worldwide organisations, and in military organisations in particular, face a challenge in the increase of training demand to deliver and sustain a qualified workforce. This study explored the advantages of this type of BL to address the challenge. The data was collected by group interviewing stakeholders, i.e. the course managers and instructors. The interview workshops identified the features of the designed course structure and trainee flow process that would impact on the effective operation of BL learning. The trainees' data in training hours was analyzed to examine the BL impact on the training throughput. The management science concepts from, e.g. Lean thinking and Queuing theory, are used to recognize enabling factors that make this implementation work. This article concludes that the BL discussed here can help to address the training challenge for organisations to build workforce capability by catering to diverse learning needs, especially for motivated trainees in their career education. It is hoped that the lessons learned from this study will contribute to the knowledge in the field of adult education and workplace learning in the designing and implementation of more flexible training programs.

  • Culturally Responsive Teaching with Adult Learners
    • Authors: Rhodes; Christy M.
      Pages: 33 - 41
Abstract: In recent decades, educational research has strongly supported the incorporation of culture and cultural identities into adult learning environments. However, much of the literature about culturally responsive teaching, a well-established framework in multicultural education research, has been conducted in the K-12 setting, leaving one to question how adult education researchers and practitioners utilize these approaches. This article describes research conducted from a culturally responsive framework in various adult learning environments. In general, many studies eschewed the complete culturally responsive framework, choosing selected aspects commonly identified with sociocultural theory. The most commonly used tenets were: the importance of learners' cultural identities, the need for adult educators to explore their own cultural identities, and the role that diverse curriculum and materials play in establishing an inclusive learning environment.

  • An Evaluation of Experiential Learning Strategies for an Entrepreneurship
           Boot Camp
    • Authors: Ramkissoon-Babwah; Natasha
      Pages: 42 - 53
Abstract: There has been a global movement to support the creation of sustainable business enterprises via entrepreneurial activity. To encourage the growth and supply of entrepreneurs, training programmes have been designed to deliver knowledge at various stages along the entrepreneurship continuum. The pedagogical approaches of experiential education has been making its way into the delivery of entrepreneurship education programmes as a unique variable in programme implementation. This research article investigated the impact of the deployment of experiential learning into the delivery of an Entrepreneurship Boot Camp. It was revealed that the experiential techniques made a positive impact on the delivery of the curriculum and it was recommended that future Camps adopt a customized approach by an entrepreneurial assessment at the application process, the provision of mentoring services, a post after care support programme including an agency referral system and an expansion of the programme into the Secondary School system

  • Transformative Learning in Teacher Education
    • Authors: Munger; Mary Heather, Murray, Mary, Richardson, Meighan, Claussen, Alex
      Pages: 54 - 64
Abstract: This article describes a partnership between teacher education candidates in a small, rural, private university and students in a large, public, urban junior/ senior high school. This partnership utilized technology and used a Literature as a Bridge (LAAB) program to foster discussions designed to be vehicles of learning for all participants. The objectives of this program were to 1) have urban youth see higher education as an option for their future by giving them experience with college students, college expectations, and a college campus, 2) increase cultural competence by providing opportunities for teacher candidates to work with culturally and ethnically diverse students with experiences different from their own, and 3) allow literature to be a vehicle to bridge diverse groups. The dynamic relationship between teacher candidate and high school students set the stage for transformational learning for both the teacher candidates and the junior/senior high school students.
