  • U.S. Central Americans: Reconstructing Memories, Struggles, and
Communities of Resistance ed. by Karina O. Alvarado, Alicia Ivonne
Estrada, and Ester E. Hernández (review)
    • Abstract: The anthology U.S. Central Americans draws from oral traditions, literary and visual art, and cultural geography to shed light on the growth and (re)configurations of Central American communities—mainly Salvadoran, Guatemalan, and Maya—in California. Notably, the release of this anthology coincides with a series of events that have placed various Central American lives at the forefront of mass media, including the detainment and forced separation of families from the so-called Northern Triangle region seeking refuge in the United States and the termination of Temporary Protective Status for thousands of Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, and Hondurans. The release of this anthology is therefore timely and necessary, as it ... Read More

  • Soldados Razos at War: Chicano Politics, Identity, and Masculinity in the
U.S. from World War II to Vietnam by Steven Rosales (review)
    • Abstract: In Soldados Razos at War: Chicano Politics, Identity, and Masculinity in the U.S. from World War II to Vietnam, Steven Rosales examines the experiences of Mexican American/ Chicano veterans who served in the US armed forces in three major military conflicts: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His main goals are to illuminate the reasons Mexican American youth enlisted in the armed services between 1940 and 1975, how they navigated military life and the subsequent transition to civilian status, and what motivated them to participate in politics and civil rights activism after their service. Rosales is primarily concerned with showing how Mexican American men constructed a masculine ethnic identity ... Read More

  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: In this issue, we uncover hidden oral history gems in our midst and, by shining a spotlight on them, gain a better understanding of the broader Latina/o experience. In the course of discovering these treasures, the writers have found a pattern: tremendous resiliency and resourcefulness. The individuals whose lives are examined here include a sports-car-driving journalist who examines herself and turns her life around. We hear from documentary filmmakers who are compelled to forge ahead because they insist on including the Latina/o perspective in our country's historical narrative—even when too many in their industry dismiss it as unimportant. In our backyard of Austin, Texas, history center staff have used oral ... Read More

  • The Spiritual Journey of Mary Sanchez: A Promise Fulfilled
    • Abstract: It is possible to become discouraged about the injustice we see everywhere. But God did not promise us that the world would be humane and just. He gives us the gift of life and allows us to choose the way we will use our limited time on earth. It is an awesome opportunity.Faith strips the mask from the world and reveals God in everything.Give of your hands to serve and your hearts to love. The greatest challenge of the day is: how to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has to start with each one of us.Mary Sanchez was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 4, 1936. Over the course of her life she became an inspiring example to a large extended family and to those who came to know her ... Read More

  • Latinas/os in Documentary Filmmaking: Issues of Representation, Funding,
           and Opportunity
    • Abstract: Documentary films hold a special place: they are at once influencers of public opinion, political ideology, and institutional attitudes and products of those same societal forces. For some, documentary films are their only window onto history. Because of that, documentary films are particularly important for inclusion of the US Latina/o perspective in the historical consciousness of the country. But documentaries about the Latina/o experience are scarce, and they represent only a very small part of the universe of documentary filmmaking. What are the barriers to entry' What can be done to lower those barriers' To begin a sustained conversation about Latina/o representation in the media, the Voces Oral History ... Read More

  • Repository Review: Mexican American Oral Histories at the Austin History
           Center
    • Abstract: The Oral Histories and Recollections at the Austin History Center (AHC), in Austin, Texas, preserve oral history recordings "documenting the rich and colorful history of more than 400 local residents and public figures."1 The AHC started in 1955 as the Austin-Travis County Collection, a branch of the Austin Public Library, but its first oral history interviews began in the 1960s and early 1970s.2 Rusty Heckaman, AHC's reference archivist, said he believes that the AHC's oral history collection was created somewhat organically, as donations were received and interest grew in collecting oral history recordings. The oral history interviews capture different information from what people may find in print documents ... Read More

  • Notes from the Community: The South Colton Oral History Project
    • Abstract: Three nonhistorians, undaunted by ignorance of historical research methodology and the pitfalls they might encounter, and with zero initial resources, sought to capture what is "locked up in the minds of the few," a picture of life in a segregated community in the first half of the past century. Initially, they viewed their search as a project that would produce a couple of dozen life stories and be done with. Instead, with time, they realized their endeavors had turned into valuable documentation of a vibrant community, its history, and its people. I am one of those three history research neophytes. Our ongoing oral history study is shared here in the hope that its simplicity will inspire others to capture the ... Read More
