  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: This volume will be numbered 70/71 (2017/2018) in order to reconcile the cover date and calendar date within the next year. Mississippi Quarterly has been on a regular publication schedule since 2012, but overcoming the lag that developed years ago due to a variety of circumstances has remained an elusive goal. After the managing editor and I consulted with the journal's publisher (the Mississippi State University College of Arts & Sciences), cataloging librarians, and representatives of online databases, we decided that publishing a two-year volume as a one-time fix was the best option for catching up with the least amount of ... • Claiming the Property of History in Natasha Trethewey's Native Guard
    • Abstract: Eric Foner's question "Who Owns History'" has become particularly significant with passionate public debates about the meaning of Civil War monuments and with academic fields from economics to history rethinking slavery's role in building the modern capitalist world.1 That we would be so conflicted about a war waged a century and a half ago points to the myriad ways in which the American narrative of freedom cannot contain the vast impact of three and a half centuries of New World slavery. The struggle over who tells this history and how is understandable. Underlying Foner's question, however, is a yet more fundamental one: how can history be owned' In order for something to be owned, it must be property subject to ... Read More

  • Reading Cane in the Anthropocene: Toomer on Race, Power, and Nature
    • Abstract: While scientists debate the geological legacy of the human species—is our impact best measured by the radioactive material evident in growth rings of trees1 or the inevitable layer of plastics that will be preserved in the fossil record'—others in the humanities and social sciences caution that the concept of the Anthropocene reifies the centrality of the white male. The Anthropocene, or "human age" (from the Greek Anthropos), is the proposed name for the new geological epoch defined by the irreversible, collective human impact on the Earth, but as nuclear scholar Gabrielle Hecht writes in "African Anthropocene," we must be sensitive to the "centuries-old conflation of human with white man" (n.p.). One of the great ... Read More

  • "The Vintage" Faulkner: Imagining Futurity in the Degenerate South of
           Charlotte Perkins Gilman
    • Abstract: . . . the budding Southern mind. . . . strikes us to-day as beyond measure queer and quaint and benighted—innocent above all; stamped with the inalienable Southern sign, the inimitable rococo note. . . . [it] looks to our present eyes as artlessly perverse, as untouched by any intellectual tradition of beauty or wit, as some exhibited array of the odd utensils or divinities of lone and primitive islanders.. . . marked with the queerness, among many queernesses . . .Still I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it. . . . reminding one of a fungus. In his 1888 essay "The South as a Field for Fiction," north-south transplant, writer, and lawyer Albion Tourgée writes, "it cannot be denied that ... • Apex to Aberrant: Disability in Larry Brown's Dirty Work
    • Abstract: Dirty work is a book about how bodies are viewed, changed, and managed, on both individual and societal levels. This essay applies feminist and queer disability studies to Larry Brown's novel about heterosexual, disabled men. Feminist criticism, queer theory, and disability studies are all represented independently in literary criticism, but locating the intersection of the three is an effective means to read the disabled male body in southern society and southern literature. In Dirty Work, that intersection occurs in an unlikely place: a conversation between two men who have fallen from the apex of masculinity to a position of aberrance in the context of the post-Vietnam South. Several applications become ... Read More

  • Mockingbird, Watchman, and the Adolescent
    • Abstract: In 2012, bowker Market Research released the results of a two-year study on reading trends in the young adult literature (YAL) market (McLean and Kulo).1 While the number of teen readers of YAL continues to rise, the study did not anticipate the growing number of adult readers (ages eighteen to fifty-four) of YAL. In fact, around seventy-three percent of YAL readers belong to the adult reader category,2 buying YAL for personal enjoyment about seventy-eight to ninety-four percent of the time (McLean and Kulo, slides 36, 37).3 YAL can be defined as literature about, written for, written by, or marketed to adolescent readers.4 Similarly, YAL often incorporates literature of adolescence, or literature that may feature ... • Harper Lee and Other People: A Stylometric Diagnosis
    • Abstract: There are few books with as enduring a grasp on the American mind and heart as Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Cherished by readers worldwide, the novel also continues to be the subject of extensive academic interest.1 The sheer sales figures speak volumes about the book: Harper Collins boasts that more than thirty million copies of To Kill a Mockingbird were sold over the years and that it has been translated into forty languages (Cavoto 418). The enduring popularity of the novel has been sensational in itself, but the film adaptation redoubled its success. The movie diminished the role of Scout and the story of the children, focusing more attention on Oscar-winning Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch,2 a character ... Read More
