  • Editor’s Note
    • Abstract: Anyone who peruses the Modern Language Association International Bibliography to understand the current state of scholarship on Edith Wharton encounters an array of innovative critical approaches to her work. Since 2017, the total number of journal articles, book chapters, and books published on Wharton’s work exceeds thirty. A few examples must suffice to suggest the range of approaches. Emily Orlando’s analysis of Oscar Wilde’s influence on Wharton and Ogden Codman Jr., Naomi Wolf ’s exploration of Wharton as an “Heiress to Gay Male Sexual Radicalism,” and Shannon Brennan’s exploration of “Queer Objects and Orientations” in the author’s fictional haunted houses demonstrate that Wharton, as Brennan argues ... • Edith Wharton’s “Coming Home”: Spinning a Good Yarn with
           Homeric Intent
    • Abstract: For much of the twentieth century Wharton’s war fiction was rarely included in the literary war canon. It was relegated to the categories of sentimentality and propaganda, which were deemed less than relevant to the predominant ones of disillusionment and irony associated with the fiction of her male contemporaries. With reference to her 1918 novel, The Marne, Stanley Cooperman wrote: “Miss Wharton saw American troops as Boy Scouts out on a field trip, serious about killing Germans, gay among themselves, polite to women, and giving their lives as a sort of good deed for the day, with the merit badge of ‘Glory’ for their reward” (42). Peter Buitenhuis was one of the earliest critics to challenge Wharton’s exile to ... Read More

  • Dangerous Domesticity: Gossip and Gothic Homes in Edith Wharton’s
           Fiction
    • Abstract: From her early short stories to her breakthrough success The House of Mirth (1905) and through to later works like Twilight Sleep (1927), Edith Wharton’s fiction has become almost synonymous with the literary depiction of homes. Scholars have returned repeatedly to Wharton’s biography and her nonfictional texts to account for the central presence of houses in her varied accounts of culture in the United States.1 Taking this connection in a novel direction in her reading of Wharton’s design guide The Decoration of Houses (1897), Susan Fraiman uncovers Wharton’s de-sentimentalization of houses and her decoupling of the private sphere from feminine or sentimental values so persistently associated with the home.2 This ... • Re-forming Manon: A New History of Edith Wharton’s 1901 Play, Manon
           Lescaut
    • Abstract: In a letter to producer Charles Bancroft Dillingham, Edith Wharton explained her position on the protagonist of her five-act drama, Manon Lescaut, A Play in Five Acts: “I object to any change tending to efface Manon’s individuality” (1 December 1900). This complaint reflects a disagreement between Wharton and Dillingham, who represented the actress Julia Marlowe, who was considering playing Manon after the actress Marie Tempest “decided to renounce ‘costume plays’ for modern comedy” (Wharton, A Backward, 166). Dillingham wanted acts three and four collapsed into one act, cutting the play and removing scenes that he and possibly Marlowe found morally objectionable. Wharton wrote to Dillingham that she would ... Read More

  • Making Noise, Making News: Suffrage Print Culture and U.S. Modernism by
           Mary Chapman (review)
    • Abstract: Mary Chapman’s Making Noise, Making News: Suffrage Print Culture and U.S. Modernism is situated at the intersections of gender, print culture, sound, and modernist studies. Chapman reads “voice as the primary trope for suffrage print culture” (11) and examines its various iterations. She notes that the voices of suffrage print culture were “multivocal, collective, anonymous, or pseudonymous” (19); they could be self-contradictory, ironic, parodic, and humorous; and they relied on quotation and ventriloquism via other genres. As such, these voices were “more disaggregated” from the bodies and identities of their speakers than we might imagine oratory or debate voices to be; thus, the “models of . . . voice” ... Read More

  • Anglo-American Travelers and the Hotel Experience in Nineteenth-Century
Literature: Nation, Hospitality, Travel Writing ed. by Monika M. Elbert,
           Susanne Schmid (review)
    • Abstract: In 1794 the City Hotel in New York opened its doors to guests for the very first time (130). Considered among the foremost of the grand hotels, its construction arguably marks the beginning of the modern tourist industry. The following century saw a growing number of grand hotels in the bigger cities of America and Europe, and by 1893 the “mother of modern hotels” had been constructed in Manhattan: the Waldorf-Astoria, an emblem of the Gilded Age with its enormous sixteen stories and thirteen hundred bedrooms (Hungerford 92, qtd. on 131). These monstrous hotels were indicative of the particular anxieties that marked this period of mobility, modernity, and mechanization, their luxurious bulks encroaching on ... Read More

Christianson and Leslee Thorne-Murphy call philanthropic discourse. Not to be confused with our current concept of the term as a mere addendum to capitalism, philanthropy ... Read More
