  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: With the Fall 2017 issue of Cervantes we settle comfortably back into a routine more reminiscent of the years prior to the ratcheting up of the recent 400th anniversary commemorations that began in 2013.We begin with a cluster of three Quixote-related articles. The first is an essay by Frederick de Armas, who argues that Amadís de Gaula functioned as an "intermediary" between Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, each of whom wrote a major work—Don Quixote and The Tempest, respectively—based on this important chivalric novel. De Armas's essay is followed by Mar Martínez Góngora's study of collective memory and historiography in the Magreb (by way of the "Captive's Tale") and how these discourses underline ... Read More

  • Galeotto fu 'l libro: Don Quixote, Amadis, and The Tempest
    • Abstract: Did Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare ever meet' In spite of its tantalizing possibilities, this question has been set aside by critics (albeit not by filmmakers and novelists) even during the 400th anniversary of the two writers.1 Those that have scrutinized the English mission to Valladolid in 1605 in the hopes of finding Shakespeare's name among those who traveled there have come up empty-handed.2 But, most critics are content to foreground that Shakespeare read Cervantes in Thomas Shelton's 1612 translation of the first part of Don Quixote in order to compose a play based on the Cardenio episode.3 I will leave to others to continue investigating what Roger Chartier has called "Cardenio Fever" (170). ...
Read More

  • Strategic and Communicative Action in Don Quijote: Fernando and Alonso
           Quijano
    • Abstract: Juan de Valdés's well-known Diálogo de la lengua, first published around 1535, insistently champions the notion that, ideally, language should be simple and clear. Toward the end of his dialog, in a section dedicated specifically to style, Valdés responds to Marcio's question about how to distinguish between good coplas and bad coplas: "Por buenas tengo las que tienen buena y clara sentencia, buenos vocablos, acomodados a ella, buen estilo, sin superfluidad de palabras […] y por malas tengo las que no son desta manera" (163). By this way of thinking, communication functions most efficiently when words "accommodate" themselves to the sense that they are attempting to express. Valdés goes on to critique those coplas ...
• Free Will and Indeterminacy in Cervantes: From Molina to
           Heisenberg…and Beyond!
    • Abstract: "The most radical consequences of the switch to quantum dynamics is this: mental intent now becomes able to influence, via the specified quantum dynamical laws themselves, the evolution of the physically described systems being observed."The goal of this paper is to assemble a dialogue between Miguel de Cervantes's perspectival and temporally contingent aesthetics and what Henry Stapp calls the orthodox theory of quantum mechanics. This will not be the first scientific or even the first quantum approach to Cervantes's fiction. • The Quixotic in Horror: Self-Generating Narrative and Its Self-Critical
Sequel in Wes Craven's Self-Reflexive Cinema
    • Abstract: "With all their twists and turns, Don Quixote's adventures form the boundary: they mark the end of the old interplay between resemblance and signs and contain the beginning of new relations."When Miguel de Cervantes began writing El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha (1605/1615), he set out to write a satirical, self-reflexive spin on the chivalric romance popularized by the success of Amadís de Gaula, an early modern bestseller in Spain initially published in 1508 that went on to span twelve sequels throughout the sixteenth century. Although history and academia eventually judged Don Quijote to be not only the wellspring of the modern novel but also the canonical text for narrative fiction, early modern ... Read More

la novela cervantina en Waverley, or 'Tis Sixty Years Since (1814), de Sir
           Walter Scott
• Ficino in Spain by Susan Byrne (review)
    • Abstract: This excellent study, richly annotated and carefully argued, is the fruit of many hours of library research and archival digging. Professor Byrne demonstrates conclusively that Ficino's translations of Plato, Plotinus, and others were already circulating in Spain by the late fifteenth century (and we recall Ficino himself died in 1499). Particularly striking are the references to Ficino, and to Ficino's Plato, in the earliest surviving catalogue (of 1523) of the library holdings at the University of Alcalá de Henares, a university founded to promote humanist endeavors in Spain. Even more important than her concrete findings, however, is her demonstration of the far-reaching implications of Ficino's presence in the ... Read More

  • El teatro de Miguel de Cervantes by Ignacio García Aguilar, Luis Gómez
Canseco, and Adrián J. Sáez (review)
    • Abstract: Miguel de Cervantes is revered as the creator of Don Quijote, a narrative that has left its mark on the development of the novel and on artistic innovation in general. Nobody doesn't like Don Quijote, one could argue. The same could hardly be said of Cervantes's comedias, which were maligned early and in the cruelest terms, and which have never quite been vindicated. Throughout their brief but solid and insightful survey, Ignacio García Aguilar, Luis Gómez Canseco, and Adrián J. Sáez stress that, as a playwright, Cervantes belongs to the sixteenth century, not to the seventeenth. The authors are advocates of the quality of Cervantes's dramatic corpus, but they are realistic in their assessment of his theatrical ... Read More

documento by Pina Rosa Piras (review)
Read More

Cervantes by Eduardo Olid Guerrero (review)
    • Abstract: Although Miguel de Cervantes's career as a playwright did not earn him the recognition he would later achieve with Don Quijote and the Novelas ejemplares, he did not abandon his aspirations entirely. In the prologue to Ocho comedias y entremeses nunca representados (1615), Cervantes reflects on his drama: "Torné a pasar los ojos por mis comedias, y por algunos entremeses míos que con ellas estaban arrinconados, y vi no ser tan malas ni tan malos que no mereciesen salir de las tinieblas del ingenio de aquel autor a la luz de otros autores menos escrupulosos y más entendidos."1 In the years between the publication of La Numancia (1591), arguably Cervantes's most critically acclaimed play, and 1616, the year of his ... • Fighting Melancholia: Don Quixote's Teaching by Françoise Davoine
           (review)
    • Abstract: This book by psychiatrist Françoise Davoine was first published in French as Don Quichotte, pour combattre la mélancolie (2008). Davoine worked for decades in the area of trauma, mostly in collaboration with Jean-Max Gaudillère. Her best-known works, in collaboration with Gaudillère, are History beyond Trauma: Whereof One Cannot Speak, Thereof One Cannot Stay Silent (2004) and Histoire et trauma: La folie des guerres (2006). An apparent sequel to the book under review here, À bon entendeur, salut!: Face à la perversion, le retour de Don Quichotte (2013) has not yet been translated. Not surprisingly, Davoine reads Cervantes's 1605 novel as a series of scenes that reveal aspects of the great trauma of his life: his ...
