  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: The Spring 2017 issue of Cervantes brings a couple of significant changes to the journal's staff. First, after many years on our editorial board as one of our esteemed Associate Editors, George Shipley has retired from this position. Second, William Clamurro has also stepped down as our Book Review Editor following his recent retirement as a faculty member at Emporia State University. I would like to thank both George and Bill for their many years of conscientious service to the journal, to the Cervantes Society of America, and to the profession. With regard to our book reviews, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Ana Laguna, who has agreed to serve as the journal's new Book Review Editor. Congratulations, Ana! ... Read More

  • Luis Andrés Murillo Best Article of 2015: William Childers
    • Abstract: The Cervantes Society of America is delighted to announce that William Childers's Spring 2015 article, "Quixote Gumbo," has been named the winner of the 2015 Luis Andrés Murillo Best Article of the Year award.Childers's article examines the role of Don Quixote in "mediating" between European and US societies in what was once called a "melting-pot" literary aesthetic, but which is now better described as a mosaic, quilt, tapestry, or "gumbo."The anonymous jury for the 2015 selection consisted of three members of the journal's Editorial Board. These esteemed colleagues evaluated all the articles published in Cervantes during 2015 (not counting book reviews and notes) and chose Childers's essay as the year's winning ... Read More

Maravillada por la capacidad de supervivencia y adaptación de Cervantes, Margaret Atwood se preguntaba en el 2005: "What will Don Quixote become next' It's hard to say, but he will become something, for he is a figure of many lives, always transforming. In his multiplicity is the secret of his immortality" (143). Read More

  • The Fictions of Blood in "La fuerza de la sangre"
    • Abstract: The subject of blood purity has recently been studied in Cervantes with respect to Don Quijote and La Numancia,1 but I will focus on a Cervantine work whose interpretation hinges on the meaning of blood: "La fuerza de la sangre," which explores the public acceptance of the absurd fiction of limpieza de sangre while also reflecting on the limitations and possibilities of genre.2 I draw on María Elena Martínez's characterization of the Spanish concept of blood purity and impurity as "fictions, ideological constructs based on religious and genealogical understandings of difference" (Martínez 61). As Martínez notes, in spite of their fictional nature, these "were no less effective at shaping social practices ... Read More

  • Cervantes as Early Modern Constructivist: The Case of "El celoso
           extremeño"
    • Abstract: In honor of Jerome Bruner (1915-2016)Jerome Bruner has been—and will remain—a great influence not only in cognitive psychology, but also in the field of literary studies. His writings uncovered the many ways in which people think narratively, and greatly influenced our understanding of how we construct knowledge about the world that surrounds us, including fictional worlds. More importantly, he strongly believed in the narrative construction of reality and in narratives as "the most widely used forms of organizing human experience" (Bruner, "Narrative Construction" 9). For Bruner, this construction of reality is facilitated by a dual landscape in narratives, which differentiates them from, say, scientific arguments ... Read More

• Salvador Dalí's Everyman: Renaissance and Baroque Classicism in Don
           Quixote and the Windmills (1946)
    • Abstract: Writing under the pseudonym Felipe Jacinto in a 1941 book titled The Last Scandal of Salvador Dalí, Catalonian surrealist artist Salvador Dalí exclaimed: "Finished, finished, finished, a thousand times finished—the experimental epoch. The hour of individual creations is about to strike" (397). What appeared to be a sudden epiphany was instead the culmination of a series of insights that lead the artist to abandon automatism and focus on developing a classical technique within his own pioneering surrealistic vision. A few years later in 1946, Dalí would partner with publisher Random House and its subsidiary, The Illustrated Modern Library, in New York to illustrate a fundamentally unique edition of Don Quixote ... • Yoko Tawada's Postmodern Transformations of Sancho Panza and Don Quixote
    • Abstract: Yoko Tawada, born in 1960, is a Japanese writer who came to Germany at the age of nineteen and learned German as her second language. She writes nonfiction, plays, and poetry in both languages, German and Japanese. Her play Sancho Pansa (2000), written in German, includes snippets of Japanese and even of Spanish—the latter are three longer quotations from Cervantes's novel Don Quixote of la Mancha. This paper proposes to examine this multilingual, postmodern play and to position it in our contemporary discussion of quixotism. Since the seventeenth century, adaptations of Don Quixote have contributed to an exchange of sentiments and ideas—not only in Spain, but also transculturally. This paper places Tawada's play ... • Homelands: Reevaluating Traditional Approaches to Cervantes Through
           Alternative Biographical Interpretation
    • Abstract: Who was Miguel de Cervantes' Jean Canavaggio's rigorous 1990 biography, one of the foundational texts for this present endeavor, paints a relatively detailed picture—perhaps enough to "know" Cervantes. Still, all biographies and histories are rendered opaque by the chasm of time, and Cervantes's case is by no means an exception. Canavaggio is clearly aware of the limitations of his and any other biography of Cervantes, while also recognizing the many attempts that have been made to fill in the gaps of Cervantes's biographical record, especially those that are founded on ahistorical information:To rediscover the traces of this existence, beyond the images hallowed by posterity, has been for more than two centuries ... • Desocupado Lector: Cervantes, Poetry, and the Idle Reader
    • Abstract: The following script is a celebration of the poetry of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), as found in his narrative and dramatic works. The narrative commentary is by Edward Friedman, the poetry by Don Miguel. The original performance was a one-man show that featured a bilingual professional actor. The second performance was by nine graduate students in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Vanderbilt University. The version here is that of the first performance.1Good evening. My name is____________________________.I'm an actor, and I'm going to be reading poetry by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, known to you as the author of Don Quixote. • Celebrando a nuestro villano favorito
• Reescrituras bíblicas cervantinas by Ruth Fine (review)
    • Abstract: Cervantes y los géneros de la ficción is a bold title fit for an equally bold undertaking. One that suggests that the book will either engage in a comprehensive investigation of genres of literature informed by Cervantes's texts post-publication, or that El Manco de Lepanto informs his own writing with genres of fiction previous or contemporary to his own time. Valentín Núñez Rivera opts for the latter, researching an abundance of Medieval and Renaissance literary traditions of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries that influenced Cervantes's oeuvre. The book is divided into two parts: Trayectorias y pervivencias and Modulaciones Cervantinas. Each part is further partitioned into chapters and ... Read More

  • Exemplary Novellas by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (review)
    • Abstract: This new English translation of Cervantes's Novelas ejemplares by Michael Harney presents a lively and highly readable version of the original in a style and register of English that will be accessible to the contemporary English-speaking American student and to the general reader. Unlike the facing-page Spanish and English translation version recently re-published by Aris & Phillips (2013) and reviewed in this journal (34.1, Spring 2014), Harney's edition contains only the English translation. But the style chosen by Harney gives a very readable text, one that will be accessible to the contemporary reader. In comparing these two English translations, I would say that both Harney's new edition and the Aris & ...
