  • Introduction – An Amphibious Anthropology: The Production of Place at
the Confluence of Land and Water
    • Abstract: Water scarcity and excess are universal human concerns. The desert landscapes captured by the closing photographs of this special issue are located in the southeastern corner of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. Like any landscape, the desert is shaped by the presence and movement of water. And to the nomadic camel herders, life in the desert revolves around the search for water as their mobility is guided by the elusive presence of this life-giving liquid. Water used to be found in the scattered wells and springs governed by customs and cultural codes. But these movements are now disrupted. To the harshness of desert life, another layer of unpredictability and capriciousness is being added. As wells and ... Read More

Read More

  • Troubling Water: Shale Energy and Waterscape Transformation in a North
           American Extraction Zone
    • Abstract: Shale energy doesn’t just affect one [water] well on one person’s property, as serious a problem as that is. This affects the whole community. Waters flow every which way; water-sheds cut across state and political boundaries . . . I say to my teenagers, you need to leave Ohio because the water will be poisoned. You need to move somewhere they aren’t doing this.1 I think deep in our archetypal psyche we all have this deep dread for what is really happening and it’s happening because of the impacts on water. Everybody says you can’t live without water and most people are still running water down the sink . . . It’s like you know war is coming, so you just keep trying to go shopping. You just really don’t ... Read More

  • Living Paradox in Riverine Bangladesh: Whiteheadian Perspectives on Ganga
           Devi and Khwaja Khijir
    • Abstract: In a village in the southeastern part of Bangladesh, a woman tells a researcher about her state of mind at the time of her son’s death by drowning in a pond close to their homestead: I thought about nothing, had no memory of anything. Now I know (boy’s name) is not alive. That day I cooked with such attentiveness it was as though I was childless. After finishing, I remembered that I hadn’t seen (child’s name). The other day he came to me many times, he touched the wood and searched for fish to eat. That day he did not come and I did not even notice. The research article describes how respondents subscribe to the idea that supernatural beings live in the water and seek continual sacrifices or ... Read More

  • Cultivating Ice over Time: On the Idea of Timeless Knowledge and Places in
           the Himalayas
    • Abstract: Co-produced by the United Nations Development Program, the documentary film Revealed: The Himalayan Meltdown examines the impacts of glacier recession in the Himalayas on the lives of people in several Asian countries (Fries 2011). In the opening, the narrator’s voice tells viewers that “the people of Asia are . . . harnessing determination, spirituality and science to adapt and survive in the face of Himalayan meltdown.” In this way, the film seems to idealise the capacity of local communities to absorb global-level environmental changes. In presenting various technologies developed in response to climate change, the 45-minute documentary depicts populations affected by receding glaciers as having abundant ... Read More

    • Abstract: In Andean Peru, landscape studies have focused on the animate landscape, where both rocks and mountains are linked to what Marisol de la Cadena (2015) has recently termed “earth beings” (see also Allen 1988; Gose 1994). Other studies of Andean landscapes highlight how these are related to patterns of power and domination (Orlove 2002; Poole 1987), to patterns of ethnic and cultural difference (Colloredo-Mansfeld 1999; Oedegaard 2011; Orlove 1993; Rasmussen 2015), and engineered through the manipulation of water in irrigation channels, terracing, and drainage. The power of landscape is expressed through different means that are related to cultural and social politics of difference, modes of dwelling, and ... Read More

  • Two Days in the Life of a River: Glacier Floods in Bhutan
    • Abstract: On 6 October 1994, a vast quantity of water burst out of a lake high in the Himalayas of Bhutan and came rushing down a river canyon. As it reached a lower section of the valley, a zone of dense human settlement, it destroyed houses, bridges, and fields and killed livestock and several people. A similar event occurred on 28 June 2015. This second release of lake water travelled down the same valley, and it too was very destructive, though it did not take any human lives. These two floods offer an opportunity to consider the relations of natural and social worlds. What approaches can be taken to characterise and analyse the engagements that join together a society and a river – in this case, Bhutan and the Po ... Read More

  • Water and Its Absence in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania
    • Abstract: In the arid landscapes of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, water, and the scarcity of water, constitutes a pervasive idiom for the multiple challenges faced by both rural and urban inhabitants – nomadic and sedentary. That water, and access to it, is a precondition of life and to socio-economic development in general, has continuously and consistently been made clear to me during years of multi-sited fieldwork among nomadic pastoralists in the southeastern region of Hodh ech Chargui, as well as among poor residents in the fringe areas of the capital city of Nouakchott, culminating in my doctoral dissertation, “Our Life Is Water: An Ethnography of Scarcity in Contemporary Mauritania” (Vium 2013a). • How Do You Like Me Now?: Exploring Subjectivities and Home/Field
Boundaries in Research with Women in Sex Work
    • Abstract: Ethnographic research requires strong bonds of rapport with research participants, which have historically unfolded symbiotically over the course of a project and within the well-defined parameters of the field. Anthropologists continue to engage with complex questions first raised nearly 40 years ago during the reflexive disciplinary turn that encouraged the critical examination of the representation of participants and the impact ethnographers have on the cultures with which they work. While most researchers recognise that the ethnographic enterprise is no longer exclusively situated in a fixed time or place, or always conducted with the same participants, certain tenets regarding the structural organisation of ...
Read More

Read More

• Roads: An Anthropology of Infrastructure and Expertise by Penny Harvey,
           Hannah Knox (review)
    • Abstract: Anthropologists are increasingly turning to the study of infrastructures as material forms that enable the circulation of goods, people, and ideas, reorient spatial and social relationships, and provide insight into the workings of power and politics across multiple scales. In this book, Penny Harvey and Hannah Knox draw on over a decade of research on roads and road construction in rural Peru to investigate how roads, approached as “infrastructural technologies,” can provide new perspectives on the politics of contemporary social relations (4). Their work adds to the growing literature on infrastructure by focusing squarely on the form of the political: the political purchase of infrastructural forms; the ... Read More

  • Driving After Class: Anxious Times in an American Suburb by Rachel Heiman
           (review)
    • Abstract: Driving After Class: Anxious Times in an American Suburb is the product of Rachel Heiman’s fieldwork in a suburban town centre in New Jersey, United States, pseudonymously referred to as “Danboro.” Clearly written and argued, this ethnography explores what it was like to be a middle-class American in the 1990s. It is a time that, according to Heiman, is important to study to better understand how the post-war American dream came to an end as well as to “think deeply about how to create a new American dream that will be more sustainable and equitable than the last” (xii). One of the contextualising arguments for Driving After Class is that neoliberal government policies in the United States created ... Read More

  • The Politics of Morality: The Church, the State and Reproductive Rights in
Postsocialist Poland by Joanna Mishtal (review)
    • Abstract: Political transitions are times of potential. Things are up for grabs. A new world seems possible. Dramatic improvements in women’s electoral fortunes in African and Latin American countries where gender quotas were part of a transitional package show that “regime change” provides an opening for women’s activists to embed policy and institutions that support gender justice. But transitions are also risky. As Joanna Mishtal documents in her important new book on the politics of morality in post-socialist Poland, conservatives can be activists too. There, the Catholic Church manoeuvred to entrench a moral regime such that the “governance of women’s bodies in postsocialist politics and gender ... Read More

  • Love’s Uncertainty: The Politics and Ethics of Child Rearing in
Contemporary China by Teresa Kuan (review)
    • Abstract: Love’s Uncertainty is about child rearing in the context of a major historical transformation in China, which has been, and continues to be, engineered by the state – the economic and human modernisation of the nation. The book takes as a central question the problem of moral agency in contemporary life and argues that Chinese social reality is tremendously contradictory and inconsistent, thus requiring the reconciliation of conflicting moral goods and the location of opportunities for exercising personal efficacy (8). Teresa Kuan presents her book as a critique of the ideological mystification argument, commonly found in studies of motherhood under capitalism (13). A focus on moral agency and experience ... • Spirits of the Rockies: Reasserting an Indigenous Presence in Banff
National Park by Courtney W. Mason (review)
    • Abstract: Spirits of the Rockies: Reasserting an Indigenous Presence in Banff National Park relays a history of the Nakoda First Nation presence in the Banff–Bow Valley region and of how Nakoda experiences in the post-treaty era have been shaped by Canada’s assimilative Aboriginal policies and by the local tourism economy. The book gives a rich history of Nakoda responses to colonial constraints brought on by European settlement in the Banff–Bow Valley region through an examination of power relations inherent in the colonial process. Courtney Mason relies heavily on French theorist Michel Foucault’s approach to conceptualising power – that is, not just as a repressive mechanism but also as a productive force. Mason ... Read More

  • Spirits of Protestantism: Medicine, Healing and Liberal Christianity by
           Pamela Klassen (review)
    • Abstract: Perhaps one of the most popular areas of study under the rubric of the anthropology of religion, to students and faculty alike, is healing. Interestingly, much of the research in this area focuses on either evangelical or charismatic Christian traditions or syncretic non-Western communities. Although there is no shortage of nuanced, theoretically sophisticated, and rich ethnographic research in this area, as an instructor of an undergraduate anthropology of religion class, I am always looking for ethnographic research that undermines student’s perceptions of exotic religious practices situated with the Other. With this I turned to read Pamela Klassen’s Spirits of Protestantism: Medicine, Healing and Liberal ... Read More

  • Return to Sender: The Moral Economy of Peru’s Migrant Remittances by
           Karsten Paerregaard (review)
    • Abstract: Karsten Paerregaard brings to publication a well-researched, comprehensive study of what he refers to as the “social life” of migrant remittances sent back to relatives in home countries. Impressive is his extensive review of the literature of current discourses and debates that take issue with the subject from differing standpoints of economists, sociologists, policy-makers, and anthropologists. He clearly illustrates that contrasting analyses and conclusions are due to distinct disciplinary methods of both data collection and interpretation. In part, Paerregaard’s objective is to respond to the heavy bias of policy-makers who are convinced that remittances are a “remedy for creating economic growth” and ... Read More

  • Gay Voluntary Associations in New York: Public Sharing and Private Lives
           by Moshe Shokeid (review)
    • Abstract: This book is the record of the fifth major fieldwork study by the Israeli anthropologist, Moshe Shokeid, and it marks an investment of more than three decades in ongoing field research in New York City. In 1988, his study, Children of Circumstances, examined the lives of yordim, Israeli emigrants to New York, and in 1995 his landmark ethnography, A Gay Synagogue in New York, was published (Shokeid 1988, 2003 [1995]). Before his work in New York, Shokeid conducted research among Moroccan immigrants to Israel and Israeli Arabs in an Israeli town. Like many other anthropologists in the last half-century, Shokeid’s anthropology has not involved a protracted visit to an alien locale to study “primitive” others. ... Read More
