Choral Creation of an Evolving Metacharacter
Read More

  • Women and Carriages in 17th-Century Aragonese Burlesque Poetry
    • Abstract: Urban reforms, road construction, maintenance and paving in Spain in the 17th century went hand in hand with technical innovations that improved the comfort and sturdiness of vehicles, as can be observed in original archival material as well as in a number of literary testimonies.1 Whereas owning a carriage in 16th-century Europe was rather uncommon, their number eventually increased and their presence became more prevalent within the aristocracy and the nascent bourgeoisie (Paulicelli 211–12; Newman 73). As María de Guevara argues in her Warnings to the Kings and Advice on Restoring Spain, around 1663 there was “no city supplier, merchant, or craftsman who does not ride around in a carriage” ...            de la primera Edad Moderna española/Female Writers’s Authorial
Visibility and Competence in the justas poéticas of Early Modern Spain
Read More

           reconsideradas/Anonimity as Textual Performance: Reconsidering
           ‘Clarinda’ and Amarilis
Read More

           Teresa
    • Abstract: María de San José (Salazar) (1548–1603) and Ana de San Bartolomé (1550–1626), significant figures in the early history of the Discalced Carmelite Order, both served as leaders during the first generation of the Teresian reform. Not only were they founding mother superiors of several convents, but also throughout their lives they remained active proponents of the precepts of the woman who would become Saint Teresa of Ávila. Although their background, focus, and style differed significantly, the two women devoted themselves to ensuring the new movement’s success and continuation. Along with Ana de Jesús (1545–1621), they are frequently cited by historical, literary, and religious scholars as the ... Read More

  • “La décima musa portuguesa” and Her Soledades de Buçaco: Gendered
Landscape Poetry Dedicated to the Nuns of Santo Alberto
    • Abstract: Bernarda Ferreira de Lacerda, who spent most of her life in Lisbon, was arguably the most famous living woman writer on the Iberian Peninsula during her lifetime (c. 15951–1644). After the 1618 publication of the first part of her epic poem Hespaña libertada (Spain Liberated), she met, corresponded with, and dedicated poems to other writers and political figures: Gabriel Pereira de Castro, Francisco de Sá de Meneses, Felipe III of Spain, and João IV of Portugal. Other poets (for example Lope de Vega, Juan Pérez de Montalbán, and Sóror Violante do Céu) likewise dedicated poems and books to her. She published her most well-known works after the death of Teresa of Avila (1582) and the publication of ... Read More

  • Praises and Prayers to Mary in the Writings of Francisca Josefa de
           Castillo y Guevara
    • Abstract: Oh, Jesu! My father! My son! See here an indissoluble enigma: I, a virgin, had thee, a son; thou, a son, hadst me, a spouse; my son is my father, and I am the daughter of my son. I will then weep for thee as my father, sigh for thee as thy daughter, die for thee as thy spouse, and grieve for thee as thy mother. The Neo-Grenadine mystical nun and writer, Francisca Josefa de Castillo y Guevara (1671–1742), commonly known as Madre Castillo, is most celebrated for her work in prose. Following the advice of her confessors, the nun wrote a narrative of her spiritual and mystical life known as Su vida, a record of divinely inspired sentiments known as Afectos espirituales, as well as other brief ...
villancicos de 1676/Sor Juana, Doctor in Theology: Wisdom and Knowledge in
           the villancicos of 1676
trasatlántico/Primero sueño and Segundo sueño, a Transatlantic Poetic
           Dialogue
Read More

  • How Marriage Became One of the Sacraments: The Sacramental Theology of
Marriage from its Medieval Origins to the Council of Trent by Philip L
           Reynolds (review)
    • Abstract: In the rich proliferation of literary forms that emerges during the Renaissance and Baroque, Spanish authors concern themselves with the private lives of their characters in ways that allow readers to see these as both creatures and creators of their circumstances. Across diverse genres, concepts of matrimony in particular are explored, praised, castigated, diagnosed, edified, and preached upon by authors of the Siglo de Oro. Indeed, in the past twenty years Tobias Brandenberg and other scholars have defined a “literatura de matrimonio” as a unifying theme and frame that develops from the well-known works of Juan Luis Vives and Fray Luis de León and becomes a central literary concern by Miguel de Cervantes’s ... • Luis Vélez de Guevara. La niña de Gómez Arias ed. by William R. Manson
           and C. George Peale (review)
    • Abstract: Although not typically a part of the traditional comedia canon, La niña de Gómez Arias stands poised to take its place among other early modern plays as an insightful window into racial and gender issues of the time period. In her introduction to this new edition of Luis Vélez de Guevara’s early seventeenth-century work, María M. Carrión stresses its importance as representative of “un episodio terrible y poco comentado en la historia de la raza y del género sexual en el mundo hispánico” (16). Referencing strife between Muslims and Catholics that resulted in massacres and enslavement on both sides of the conflict, she recognizes the female protagonists of the play as both objects of exchange between the two ... • The Epic of Juan Latino: Dilemmas of Race and Religion in Renaissance
Spain by Elizabeth R. Wright (review)
The I Tatti Renaissance Library” (Juan Latino. “The Song of John of Austria”. In The Battle of Lepanto, edited and translated by Elizabeth R. Wright, Sarah Spence, and Andrew Lemons, 288–407. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2014). Read More
