  • The Space of Empire and the Place of Patronage in Some Panegyric Sonnets
by Luis De Góngora y Argote
    • Abstract: The poetry of Luis de Góngora displays an obsession with different types of spaces and places, often in the context of social and political relationships. His poems are concerned with real geographical sites, both rustic––rivers, mountains, all types of terrains––, and urban––cities and towns with specific locales such as galleries, monuments, and buildings. Many of the sonnets dealing with these diverse locations have one thing in common: they were written to exalt important nobles such as the Conde de Lemos, the Cardenal Niño de Guevara, the Conde de Salinas or the Marqués de Ayamonte, to name only a few. We encounter embedded in these poems a depiction of the dynamics of patronage and power. The topic of ... Read More

  • Breaking the Myth: Bocángel’s New Narcissus
    • Abstract: Spanish Baroque poet Gabriel Bocángel y Unzueta (1603–1658) gives the Ovidian myth of Narcissus a twist in a game of mirrored images, voices, and silences. In redondilla LX, a lady, Celia, looks into a mirror that breaks suddenly, multiplying her image into infinite miniature portraits. Unlike Ovid’s version of the story, it is not the lady who, like Narcissus, dies, enraptured in self-contemplation, but the looking-glass itself.1 Sonnet XII, on the other hand, introduces the idea of an eloquent voice; the “death” of the glass is the breaking of both its surface and its silence. On shattering, the glass is endowed with a voice, turning into a true mirror that echoes and reflects the message that not only are beauty ... Read More

  • Generic Displacement and Creole Discourse in “Relación” by María de
           Estrada Medinilla
• The Sevillian Villancico During the Seventeenth Century (1621–1700)
• Craving Earth: Understanding Pica: The Urge to Eat Clay, Starch, Ice and
Chalk by Sera L. Young (review)
    • Abstract: In the new collection on medical cultures of the Spanish early modern, Maríaluz López-Terrada contributes an interesting essay on oppilation, the early modern diagnosis of organ blockage often associated with amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and poor color in women, thought to have been caused by the custom of chewing clay (Slater, John, Maríaluz López-Terrada, and José Pardo-Tomás, eds. Medical Cultures of the Early Modern Spanish Empire. Burlington: Ashgate, 2014, 173, 176). In her essay, “‘Sallow-Faced Girl: Either its Love or You’ve Been Eating Clay’: The Representation of Illness in Golden-Age Theatre,” the medical historian describes the literary representation of the condition of oppilation and its ...
modernidad (siglos XVI-XVIII) ed. by Javier Burrieza Sánchez (review)
• The Formation of the Child in Early Modern Spain ed. by Grace E. Coolidge
           (review)
    • Abstract: This collection of twelve well-written and rigorously researched essays edited by Grace E. Coolidge is part of the series New Hispanisms: Cultural and Literary Studies edited by Anne J. Cruz. It makes welcome contributions to the growing bodies of scholarship on culture and society in early modern Spain. The authors work in several different disciplines and take a number of different methodological approaches to their varied subject matter, but all generally argue that early modern Spaniards recognized childhood as a discrete phase of life. Although these perceptions of childhood contained elements of the pragmatic and tended to define children as what Grace Coolidge terms “latent adults who needed to be trained ... Read More

  • Masculine Virtue in Early Modern Spain by Shifra Armon (review)
Read More

Read More

segunda mitad del siglo XVII by Jesús Gómez (review)
Read More

  • El Cancionero de Valencia: Mss. 5593 de la Biblioteca Nacional. Edición y
estudio preliminar ed. by Nancy F. Marino (review)
Read More
