A Little of This and a Little of That: The Synthesis of a Poetics of
Gallantry in the Luso-Spanish Tradition by the First Villamediana
Read More

  • Francisco de Castilla, Boethius and the Search for True Happiness
    • Abstract: Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (480-524) has been called by many the last Roman writer and the first medieval one. He is also one of the last figures in Western Europe to have learned Greek and translated Aristotle1 from whom he adapted some of his ideas. Boethius was adopted by a prominent Roman family and became a senator. He ran afoul of the leadership in Rome, was accused of treason and sentenced to death. He wrote the very influential De Consolatione philosophiae,2 a prosimetrum, or prose and poetry work, either in a jail cell or under house arrest as he waited to be executed. His impending death is the reason for the turmoil that is depicted in the book in which Boethius, as a character, receives a visit ... Read More

  • El epíteto en la Grandeza Mexicana de Bernardo de Balbuena = The Epithet
In the Grandeza Mexicana by Bernardo de Balbuena
Read More

  • Reading Góngora's habla de negros in a Literary Attack Poem
    • Abstract: When Lope de Vega published his epic poem Jerusalén conquistada in 1609, his rivals and critics derided and mocked it mercilessly, reactions that Joaquín de Entreambasaguas documents in a chapter of his three-volume edition and study (vol. 3; 83-111). Luis de Góngora y Argote chimed in with a sonnet, in which the poetic voice speaks black talk (habla de negros), the dialect of African slave characters in various comedias from Golden Age Spain. Although clearly a literary construct, John Lipski offers evidence that the phenomenon of black talk may reflect characteristics of the dialect African slaves actually spoke in Spain during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (93). Due to frequent literary imitation and ... Read More

  • The Routledge Research Companion to Early Modern Spanish Women Writers
eds. by Nieves Baranda and Anne J. Cruz (review)
    • Abstract: Recent essay collections on Spanish Early Modern women writers have heralded the field's further development and the new Routledge compilation may be the strongest exemplar yet. Anne Cruz and Nieves Baranda tally our growing knowledge and the efforts to expand its frontiers, and the essays, encompassing a variety of genres, reveal that the wisely chosen contributors have distilled their extensive expertise in order to present a "state of the question" and future considerations, an implicit invitation to another generation as well as a renewed declaration that Early Modern Spanish women form part of the larger panorama. The handbook yields sufficient diamonds in the rough to propel many a career as well as to expand ... Read More

    • Abstract: In this well-structured and stimulating study of the themes of space and subjectivity in a range of classical medieval and Golden Age texts, Luis Avilés offers a captivating optic on a number of textual "I" figures in various venues. His approach combines multi-layered theory and solid bibliographical referents with his own very able and close philological readings. The results are new, revealing looks at well-known literary works and thus, compliance with the Coetzee and Calvino maxims cited by Avilés in his preface: that a text remains a classic only if it continues to be interrogated (7-8). With his study of textual "I" figures that simultaneously reveal and hide themselves in spaces both singular and plural ... Read More

  • Juan de Moncayo: Obra poética ed. by Jr. Ted E. McVay (review)
