  • Energy in the Ohio Valley
    • Abstract: What creates a region? Over the past decade and a half, the editors and contributors to Ohio Valley History have attempted to answer that query. What has emerged is a diverse picture of a valley that was a frontier “shatter zone” during the colonial period; a “borderland” between freedom and slavery in nineteenth century; and in more recent decades, a major industrial river valley. As successful as this journal has been, much of that story has centered on the social, cultural, and political history of the region. What has been lacking in these pages, until now, is a robust attempt to explore the historical relationship of the residents of the valley to the local environment. There are many ways to ... • “We’ve Got Jobs. Let’s Fight for Them”: Coal, Clean Air, and the
           Politics of Antienvironmentalism
    • Abstract: In May 1988, millions of Americans tuned into a special edition of the Oprah Winfrey Show broadcast from a small town in southeastern Ohio, a region hard hit by industrial and mining losses. “They were middle class people, once earning good money in the coal mines [and in the steel mills,” the show’s opening sequence declared as Rust Belt imagery flashed across the screen. “But the rug was pulled out from under them. They never imagined themselves standing in welfare lines, never imagined relying on food stamps.” As they discussed the problems of job losses in the area, many in the audience, especially those laid-off from the region’s mines, mills, and power plants blamed new environmental regulations ... • The Ohio Valley’s Nuclear Moment: Marble Hill and Madison, Indiana
    • Abstract: The Ohio Valley is a major center of power production in the United States. Most of this power comes from coal-fired power plants, many of them constructed from the mid- to late twentieth century, lining the banks of the Ohio River and its tributaries. While the Ohio Valley’s current energy reality is one of coal slowly giving way to cheaper natural gas, in the 1960s through the 1980s nuclear power challenged fossil fuels for dominance in the region. Nuclear energy provided hope for a clean alternative to native coal and the enrichment of local areas with new tax dollars, jobs, and technology. But two nuclear power plants stopped construction in the Ohio Valley in the 1980s, and both failed for reasons ... Read More

  • Palimpsest: Natural Gas and the Layers of Pennsylvania’s Energy
           Landscape
    • Abstract: The state of Pennsylvania has been ground zero for American fossil fuel extraction for the last 150 years. Pennsylvania coal powered nineteenth-century industrial development, the first oil well was drilled in the state, and the Marcellus shale natural gas boom affected energy markets on a global scale. These successive phases of energy extraction are written on the landscape of Pennsylvania, and the Pittsburgh region is an especially rich part of that text. The coal, petroleum, and natural gas industries overlapped in time and space, as each continued to affect subsequent energy-related activity. The current importance of the natural gas industry makes it a most appropriate focus for the study of ... Read More

  • The Shifting Landscape of Appalachia: The Rogers Clark Ballard Thruston
           Mountain Photograph Collection, 1882–1905
    • Abstract: Of the numerous photograph collections housed at The Filson Historical Society, The Rogers Clark Ballard Thruston Photograph Collection is by far the largest and most significant, including over twenty thousand items dating from the 1880s through the 1940s. Rogers Clark Ballard Thruston was a Louisville businessman, land speculator, traveler, historian, and photographer who made his fortune in Appalachia between 1882 and 1909. The Filson houses photographs and records from Thruston’s time in Appalachia. Together, these works provide a rich source of information on the changing society and landscape of Appalachian Kentucky and Virginia during the Second Industrial Revolution. Thruston purchased one of the ... Read More

  • The Art of the New Deal: Kentucky’s Contribution to the Index of
           American Design
    • Abstract: Both a monograph and an exhibition at the Frazier History Museum in Louisville, Kentucky by Design catalogs the objects collected in Depression-era Kentucky, and the watercolor illustrations made of them, for the Index of American Design, a project of the Works Progress Administration. The Index, a heretofore largely forgotten program of the New Deal, was intended to record each state’s contributions to the country’s collective material history. The project that inspired “Kentucky by Design” began decades ago when Louisville attorney Allan Weiss transferred his passion for Kentucky’s musical history, born of the folk movement of the 1960s, to the state’s visual culture and determined to retrace the original ... • The Lexington Camera Club at Mid-Century
    • Abstract: Founded in December 1936, the Lexington Camera Club (LCC) was composed of college faculty, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals who met monthly to share their images, talk about photography, and buy camera equipment at the Tinder-Krauss-Tinder optical firm, where Van Deren Coke, a club leader, worked. Yet it was not until Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925–1972) joined the Lexington Camera Club in 1954 that “the story took a fascinating turn” (4). Recently, the LCC was featured in both a Cincinnati Art Museum (CAM) exhibition and catalog, both titled Kentucky Renaissance: The Lexington Camera Club and Its Community, 1954–1974. The medium-sized gray hardcover exhibition catalog, with 120 ... Read More

  • Home Rule: Households, Manhood, and National Expansion on the
Eighteenth-Century Kentucky Frontier by Honor Sachs (review)
    • Abstract: In Home Rule, Honor Sachs provides a very readable and compelling examination of how constructions of manhood and the family shaped the development of not only early western society but also politics and government in early Kentucky. The book provides a new and important perspective on how issues such as poverty, land speculation, and warfare shaped early constructions of masculinity and in turn citizenship in early Kentucky. Sachs argues that to understand the social and political development of the early West, it is necessary first to understand the role of the household and gender in the region. The work builds on an extensive scholarship of gender, the early West, and the politics of the early republic. ... Read More

  • Frontier Democracy: Constitutional Conventions in the Old Northwest by
           Silvana R. Siddali (review)
    • Abstract: This is an ambitious, learned, and rewarding book. The author surveys eleven constitutional conventions held in the Old Northwest and Upper Midwest between 1835 and 1857, treating them not individually but boldly generalizing across them topically. The focus is not so much on the practical outcomes of the conventions as on the conversations and negotiations among the participants, including some who were not delegates. The effect is to impress us with the serious, though not always coherent, quality of debate about significant legal, political and ethical issues concerning the future structure of these societies. Beginning with an entertaining look at the relatively young men who mainly composed ... Read More

  • Land Too Good for Indians: Northern Indian Removal by John P. Bowes
           (review)
    • Abstract: The Trail of Tears, the forced relocation of the Cherokees from their ancestral homelands to present-day Oklahoma in 1838–39, is one of the best-known episodes in Native American history. In fact, it has become such a powerful symbol for the devastating U.S. program of ethnic cleansing known as Indian removal that it is often forgotten how much more extensive, both in geographic and temporal terms, this program was in the early nineteenth-century United States. Tracing the relocation of the Native peoples from Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan to the trans-Mississippi West, John P. Bowes’s excellent new book not only highlights the broad scope of Indian removal but also greatly complicates and deepens our ... Read More

  • Alben Barkley: A Life in Politics by James K. Libbey (review)
    • Abstract: In the long history of American politicians appealing to their log-cabin origins, few can match the humble roots claimed by Alben Barkley. The son of hardscrabble tenant farmers in western Kentucky, Barkley forged a stunningly long and successful political career, beginning with local offices in Kentucky and eventually spanning federal service in the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate (including a lengthy stint as majority leader) and Vice President of the United States. Barkley received serious consideration to become President Franklin Roosevelt’s vice president in the 1944 electoral campaign (which would have made him president when FDR died in April 1945) and later lost the Democratic ... • The Mutual Housing Experiment: New Deal Communities for the Urban Middle
Class by Kristin M. Szylvian (review)
    • Abstract: Kristin Szylvian’s book explores a little-known chapter in American public housing history. Her focus is a relatively small group of federally funded projects completed in the 1940s with the goal of cooperative, or mutual, ownership. These projects targeted families who fell into the gap between qualifying for low-income public housing and being able to afford a house on the commercial market. As responses to the Great Depression gave way to war mobilization, mutual housing came about through the efforts of a small handful of actors. Bureaucrats Lawrence Westbrook, John Carmody, and Milburn Wilson and labor advocates like Shipbuilding Workers president John Green made cooperative ownership a part ... Read More

  • A Nice Place to Visit: Tourism and Urban Revitalization in the Postwar
           Rustbelt by Aaron Cowan (review)
    • Abstract: Most of the authors writing about postindustrial cities agonize over the remaking of downtowns for middle-class consumers. They lament that authentic urban spaces have become mere fantasy cities, Disneylands, or variations on a theme park. Aaron Cowan’s A Nice Place to Visit is a refreshing corrective to that literature. In chapter-length case studies of four Rust Belt cities—Cincinnati, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore—Cowan offers much-needed historical context, showing how tourist-led renewal might have been the best of limited options for deindustrializing cities. Convention centers, stadiums, hotels, and festival marketplaces may have failed to restore cities to their former glory or ameliorate most ... Read More

  • Boom, Bust, Exodus: The Rust Belt, the Maquilas, and a Tale of Two Cities
           by Chad Broughton (review)
    • Abstract: At the heart of Chad Broughton’s Boom,Bust, Exodus: The Rust Belt, the Maquilas, and a Tale of Two Cities is the question of what happens when a small midwestern town’s largest employer closes its plant and moves hundreds of jobs elsewhere. What motivates such an action? How do these events affect current and former employees and the community where they live? To answer these questions, Broughton’s Boom, Bust, Exodus tells the compelling story of Frederick L. “F. L.” Maytag of Newton, Iowa, who “tried just about everything just to make a buck in the frontier farming community” (52). After struggling for two decades, F. L. revolutionized the washing machine industry with his Gyrafoam in 1922, which ... Read More
