  • The Most Sung Music in History: The Hill Sisters, the Louisville
           Kindergartens, and “Happy Birthday”
    • Abstract: Among the controversies that have roiled the worlds of music distribution and publishing during recent years, one of the most famous has focused on the song “Happy Birthday.” This work, perhaps the most popular and widely known song of the twentieth century, and even into the twenty-first, has been performed hundreds of millions of times, and according to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, it is “quite likely the most sung music in history, including the output of the three B’s: Beethoven, Bach, and the Beatles.” Although most people assumed, and still assume, that “Happy Birthday” is a folk song, it was in fact until very recently under copyright, and the performance rights brought in millions of dollars in income to ... • A Show of Force: The Northwest Indian War and the Early American State
    • Abstract: When the federal government assumed newly expanded powers granted by the Constitution in 1789, it faced an urgent challenge to quell continuing violence in the Ohio River valley. The fighting along the river cost settlers an estimated fifteen hundred casualties, two thousand horses through theft, and $50,000 in property damages between 1783 and 1790, and the violence was so extensive that it threatened the United States’ claims to the region itself. As federal judge Harry Innes of Kentucky asserted to Secretary of War Henry Knox in July 1790, settlers in the area lacked “satisfactory account of the intention of Government for our relief ” from ever more frequent Indian attacks. If such attacks continued ... Read More

  • “Misunderstood and Misrepresented”: Beriah Magoffin and the 1859
           Kentucky Gubernatorial Election
    • Abstract: From mid-April 1859 through July 1859, Beriah Magoffin, the Democratic candidate for Kentucky governor, and Joshua F. Bell, a former Whig congressman and the opposition candidate, debated each other over sixty-five times. The two debated on a myriad of topics, but the issue of Congress’s role in the territories concerning slavery dominated the campaign debates and overshadowed the campaign. On April 19, in Lebanon, Bell challenged Magoffin on the issue of Congress’s role in the territories. He supported congressional intervention—the idea that Congress should legislatively intervene in the territories to protect slave property—he argued for a federal slave code in the territories. Conversely, Magoffin championed ... Read More

  • The Civil War on the Rivers: The William R. Hoel Papers at the Cincinnati
           Museum Center
    • Abstract: The brown-water navy on American waterways during the Civil War was a vital facet of the Union’s success on land and ultimately in the war itself. William R. Hoel played a key role in this success, as his papers readily demonstrate. Hoel’s papers contain the military orders and letters written and directed to him during and immediately after the Civil War. This collection is unusual among the many Civil War collections in the Cincinnati History Library & Archives in that the vast majority of its contents are orders from Hoel’s commanders during the Civil War and not correspondence to and from loved ones. These orders provide a glimpse into the type of information passed down the chain of command and the constant ... Read More

  • America’s Western Middle Border Region and Its Inner Civil Wars
    • Abstract: In 1875, a decade after Gen. Robert E. Lee’s men stacked their guns at Appomattox, two distinguished Union generals, Philip Sheridan and William T. Sherman, communicated about their native region, what Americans of the Civil War era commonly termed “the West” or the country’s western middle border. The two men grew up less than ten miles apart in southern Ohio and considered themselves westerners. “It is hard to tell who is who,” Sheridan informed Sherman as Reconstruction’s end neared, “and what is what, on that border….The state of affairs is about as mixed as the [Ohio] [R]iver is indefinite as a boundary line” (321).In his long-anticipated The Rivers Ran Backward: The Civil War and the Remaking of the American ... • Abstract: In the early afternoon hours of July 9, 1755, an advance column of several hundred British soldiers and colonial militia found themselves engaged in a desperate struggle for their lives in the dense western Pennsylvania wilderness. The British force, the vanguard of a larger army that had spent weeks crossing the Appalachian Mountains from Virginia, was just twelve miles from its objective, the French Fort Duquesne, situated at the forks of the Ohio River (modern-day Pittsburgh). The overwhelmed British fought valiantly but soon fell back, crashing headlong into the advancing main column under the command of Maj. Gen. Edward Braddock. Ignoring the advice of his aides, including a young George Washington, Braddock ... Read More

  • The Victory with No Name: The Native American Defeat of the First American
Army by Colin G. Calloway (review)
    • Abstract: As part of a larger collection of concise volumes on important American events, Colin Calloway’s latest undertaking highlights the biases present in traditional American narratives. St. Clair’s Defeat in 1791, deep within the Ohio Country, on the edge of a fledgling American nation, was critically important to the confederated Indian villages living along the Maumee River. And for both settlers and statesmen at the time, when no one knew if the republican experiment would fail, the battle was an important benchmark of the potential for great disaster in the Middle West. There are two stories at work within this slim volume—the importance of this event and the problems of teleological narratives.Calloway asserts ... • Red Dreams, White Nightmares: Pan-Indian Alliances in the Anglo-American
Mind, 1763–1815 by Robert M. Owens (review)
    • Abstract: Conflict between Indians and colonists in North America was endemic during the two centuries that followed the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in Virginia. It is therefore not surprising that the threat of war with a single Indian nation produced a constant sense of fear in the minds of white Americans, while the possibility that the Indian nations might unite and strike a concerted blow at the settlers was an infinitely more terrifying prospect. In Red Dreams, White Nightmares: Pan-Indian Alliances in the Anglo-American Mind, 1763–1815, Robert M. Owens explores the dread felt by Americans in the late colonial and early national periods at the prospect of war against a coalition of Indian ... Read More

  • Ohio Indian Trails by Frank Wilcox (review)
    • Abstract: Wedged between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River, the terrain that was to become Ohio was a rich and varied social landscape in the eighteenth century, with a population spanning many indigenous cultures. Ambiguously both a “backcountry” and a “frontier” for European newcomers, the Ohio region was contested. From the perspective of the white aggressors, the outcome of that contest was never truly in doubt. But the Ohio landscape bore ample evidence of earlier occupants, and one way white newcomers discerned that the landscape in fact had a history was through the trails those occupants had created to negotiate the terrain. This attractive volume presents one scholar’s visual interpretation of how the native ... • Senator Benton and the People: Master Race Democracy on the Early American
Frontiers by Ken. S. Mueller (review)
    • Abstract: This well-written biography of Senator Thomas Hart Benton is a welcome addition to scholarship on nineteenth century senators. It covers Benton’s rise to prominence in Missouri’s territorial period, traces his most influential years as a close ally of Andrew Jackson, and analyzes his decline from power in the wake of the Mexican-American War. In six chapters, Ken S. Mueller paints a vivid portrait of this important figure and provides his readers with a comprehensive political history. It has been many decades since Benton received a thorough biography. Muller frames his own work in light of earlier biographies, the most influential of which was William Chambers’s Old Bullion Benton: Senator from the New West ... Read More

  • One Nation Divided by Slavery: Remembering the American Revolution while
Marching toward the Civil War by Michael F. Conlin (review)
    • Abstract: Michael Conlin’s One Nation Divided by Slavery offers a clearly written and informative overview of the contested meaning of the American Revolution for antebellum Americans. As Conlin notes, although scholars have widely acknowledged the importance of the Revolution to both antebellum northerners and southerners, there has not really been a study focused specifically on how the nation as a whole viewed the Revolution in that time. By honing in on the antebellum era, Conlin is able to give a more in-depth analysis of this topic than Michael Kammen does in his seminal book on the memory and meaning of the Revolution, A Season of Youth: The American Revolution and the Historical Imagination (New York: Knopf ... • Emancipation, the Union Army, and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln by
           Jonathan W. White (review)
    • Abstract: In the hot and bloody summer of 1864 the Union army stalled outside Petersburg and Atlanta. Morale plummeted in the ranks as political calls for an armistice arose on the home front. Further complicating prospects for a successful military victory was an impending presidential election, which most observers took to be a referendum on the war effort itself. Abraham Lincoln ran for reelection, and the Republican Party ditched its first vice president in favor of the famed Tennessee union-ist Democrat, Andrew Johnson. With a new running mate from across the partisan aisle, Lincoln squared off against his old nemesis: Gen. George McClellan. The still-popular War Democrat McClellan was forced to run under the ... • The Lost Gettysburg Address: Charles Anderson’s Civil War Odyssey by
           David T. Dixon (review)
    • Abstract: For those familiar with the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, highlighted by Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, the name “Charles Anderson” is vaguely familiar. Following the formal dedicatory events at the cemetery, Abraham Lincoln attended a political rally sponsored by the State of Ohio that featured a speech by lieutenant governor–elect Charles Anderson. Newspapers mentioned the program, and a few published a quote or two from Anderson, but apart from that the speech had been lost to time.In 2002 the original speech was found among the family papers in Wyoming. In The Lost Gettysburg Address: Charles Anderson’s Civil War Odyssey, David Dixon reconstructs the ... Read More

  • Irrepressible: The Jazz Age Life of Henrietta Bingham by Emily Bingham
           (review)
    • Abstract: Henrietta Bingham may have deviated from social norms in her time, but she was far from repressed, as Emily Bingham argues in her biography of her great-aunt. Bingham examines Henrietta Bingham’s life from shortly before her birth in 1901 until her death in 1968 and places the remarkable woman’s life into historical context. Henrietta defied many social conventions of her time—having women lovers, enjoying the “flapper” lifestyle before it was trendy, and socializing with African Americans during an era of white supremacy. Henrietta experienced the race and class privilege of belonging to a wealthy and prominent Louisville family, but her unstable family life and sexual desire for women forced her to seek ... Read More

  • The 4-H Harvest: Sexuality and the State in Rural America by Gabriel N.
           Rosenberg (review)
    • Abstract: A mental image of 4-H is one of wholesomeness, with boys and girls eagerly learning farm-related tasks to improve their efficiency, productivity, and profitability. Nostalgic, idyll images, and corresponding rhetoric often are far from reality. Such is the case regarding the intent, organization, and achievements of 4-H. This is not to say that the 70 million farm youth who joined 4-H during the past century failed to gain meaningful experiences by pursuing projects such as raising a prize calf or canning tomatoes to exhibit at the county or state fair. But, the other side of the proverbial coin shows a calculating federal government that, through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, pursued an agenda to foster the ... Read More
