  • The Transformation of the Indian Countryside: Toward an Indigenous History
           of the Eighteenth-Century Ohio Valley
    • Abstract: This special issue of Ohio Valley History is dedicated to a simple but forgotten principle: the Ohio Valley was Native ground for most of its history. Indigenous peoples of different tribes, nations, and cultures competed for but collectively controlled the region long before and long after French and English itinerants and then settlers arrived in the early eighteenth century. As in the rest of North America, the Indians in the Ohio Valley ultimately lost their diplomatic, economic, and cultural upper hand. A world once defined by Indigenous concerns became one defined by the interests of the United States. This transformation of the region, however, occurred slowly. For most of the eighteenth century, the power ... Read More

  • The Ohio Country and Indigenous Geopolitics in Early Modern North America,
           circa 1500–1760
    • Abstract: From the late fifteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, the North American lands between Lake Erie and the Ohio River were a volatile nexus of alliance systems, confederacies, empires, and states. The major transportation corridors that ran through and encircled them contributed to their transition from a settled zone, to a conflict zone, to a largely depopulated buffer zone and hunting grounds and then to a resettlement zone for diverse Indigenous peoples. As these lands were being resettled in the eighteenth century, they became known as the Ohio Country, a region characterized in part by its physical geography and in part by its human geography, by the diversity of Native peoples who resettled there and began ... • "To Treat with All Nations": Invoking Authority in the Chickasaw Nation,
           1783–1795
    • Abstract: Ugulayacabé was furious in the fall of 1796. Like many Chickasaws, he was stunned to learn of the recent treaty between the United States and Spain, which now jeopardized his nation's sovereignty. The deal, which gave the Americans navigation rights to the Mississippi River and drew a new border along the 31st parallel, was the culmination of constant jockeying between the empires over land and trade routes in the Southeast since the American Revolution. However, the Treaty of San Lorenzo (also called Pinckney's Treaty) was little different from other imperial pacts in that American Indians were not invited to the table. Nevertheless, the pact meant relations in Indian country were to be amended. At a meeting at ... Read More

  • Colonial Encounters and the Changing Contours of Ethnicity: Pierre-Louis
de Lorimier and Métissage at the Edges of Empire
    • Abstract: On November 23, 1803, Capt. Meriwether Lewis and his men voyaged up the Mississippi from its confluence with the Ohio River to the village of Cape Girardeau. Upon his arrival at the small frontier village, Lewis sought out its commandant, Pierre-Louis de Lorimier, only to discover that he and his family were off at the horse races. Lewis proceeded to the racetrack and waited on Lorimier as he settled a number of disputed bets. Lewis noted that the races were reminiscent of those frequented by "uncivilized backwoodsmen" in Kentucky and disapprovingly opined that these "men of desperate fortunes" were far too eager to speculate their meager wealth on games of chance.1Birds-eye view of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers ... • A Thousand Years of American Indian History in the Filson's Collection
    • Abstract: In the scope of human existence, a millennium is not an impressive unit of time. However, placed in an archival context it has more gravitas. In the history of the Ohio Valley, where written records were nonexistent until relatively recently, archival collections spanning a millennium are remarkable. The Filson has materials—museum artifacts, photographs and prints, and manuscript records—documenting more than a thousand years of American Indian presence in the Ohio Valley. These collections reveal the region as a place where Indians once resided, socialized, traded, and interacted with European settlers. The Ohio Valley was inhabited long before the first Europeans arrived. In the late eighteenth century ... Read More

    • Abstract: In 1828, a twenty-two-year-old Choctaw man named Peter Pitchlynn set off on an exploratory expedition into Indian Territory. Pitchlynn was one of six delegates selected by the Choctaw General Council for the trip, an honor he likely received because of his exceptional education and his potential as an interpreter and budding diplomat. Pitchlynn was a graduate of the esteemed Choctaw Academy, an institution of higher learning founded by Richard Mentor Johnson, a veteran Indian fighter who, according to legend, had killed the Shawnee warrior Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames in 1813. During his excursion into Indian Country, Pitchlynn crossed paths with Tecumseh's brother, Tenskwatawa, the famed Shawnee prophet ... Read More

  • Frontier Country: The Politics of War in Early Pennsylvania by Patrick
           Spero (review)
    • Abstract: Patrick Spero opens his new book, Frontier Country, with a vignette from 1765. We meet a surveyor as he visits Lancaster, Pennsylvania, curious to learn about a semi-recent massacre committed by the Paxton Boys on the neighboring Conestoga Indians. What did our surveyor find' "A bustling and vibrant inland port," not the "lawless frontier outpost" he had expected (1). Spero gives us this story to prepare us. "Frontier" does not mean what you think it does. The book proceeds chronologically, interweaving three threads of Pennsylvania history, namely warfare, boundaries, and political negotiation (especially between capitol and back-country). It begins in the era of William Penn and ends roughly during the ... Read More

  • The Lives in Objects: Native Americans, British Colonists, and Cultures of
Labor and Exchange in the Southeast by Jessica Yirush Stern (review)
    • Abstract: Jessica Yirush Stern's contextualization of the labor and exchange of Southeastern Indians and British colonists in The Lives in Objects challenges long-entrenched historiographical assumptions about the consumer revolution's impact on Indian country. Her analysis of gift-giving, commodity exchange, and the cultural expectations accompanying both, lead the reader to reconsider how Native Americans received, remade, and incorporated European goods into their communities.Stern revises the historiography of exchange on two levels. First, whereas conventional thought holds that indigenous Americans were either uncomfortable with or inept at commodity exchange and relied on gift-giving to accomplish their diplomatic and ... • Thundersticks: Firearms and the Violent Transformation of Native America
           by David J. Silverman (review)
    • Abstract: Following the arrival of various English, French, Spanish, and Dutch interlopers in North America, Indian peoples up and down the Atlantic Coast quickly became enamored with the power of European firearms. However, as Indians lacked the technological capability to produce new guns at will—as well as the wherewithal to furnish their own powder or lead for European-made weapons—a one-sided dependency took root. Gradually, this reliance on European allies to provide the materials of war undermined Indian abilities to resist imperial subjugation. Thus, control of the gun supply made it all but inevitable that Europeans (and later Americans) would reign over the continent. Such is the overly simplistic, Anglo-centric ... Read More

  • The New Map of Empire: How Britain Imagined America before Independence by
           S. Max Edelson (review)
    • Abstract: Today, finding directions to a desired site is as easy as opening an app on one's phone and punching in an address. Gone are the days of poring over a roadmap searching for a route or indiscernible interstate number. Yet, maps were—and are—valuable for more than their directional information. As S. Max Edelson argues in The New Map of Empire: How Britain Imagined America before Independence, maps offer a vision of the world at a particular place and time from a certain point of view. In his new book, Edelson illustrates how following the Seven Years' War Great Britain, and more specifically its Board of Trade, utilized maps to put forward a plan for the empire; one it hoped would bring the American colonies under ... • Warring for America: Cultural Contests in the Era of 1812 ed. by Nicole
Eustace and Fredrika J. Teute (review)
    • Abstract: Even among forgotten conflicts, the War of 1812 fails to stand out from the pack. To be sure, this is a crowded field in U.S. history, which includes almost every conflict Americans have ever fought—with the exception of the "Big Three": the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War II. Korea and World War I also share the "forgotten war" epithet, but they, at least, have national monuments; the War of 1812 does not. It is arguably the most forgotten of all America's forgotten wars. With the approach of the bicentennial in 2012, historians at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture were determined that scholars, if no one else, would remember the conflict. The institute sponsored a 2011 ... Read More
