  • A Note from the New Editors
    • Abstract: The publication of volume 20 marks the arrival of a new set of editors for Ghana Studies. We are tremendously honored and excited to take the helm of a journal that has been nurtured and shaped by our brilliant and dedicated predecessors, Akosua Darkwah (University of Ghana) and Sean Hanretta (Northwestern University). We are deeply indebted to Akosua and Sean for ensuring a smooth and successful editorial transition, signs of which are readily evident in the rigor and dynamism that characterize this special issue of Ghana Studies. What began as a set of presentations exploring the myriad ways that John Collins has influenced the study of popular music and performance in Ghana at the 2016 Ghana Studies Association's ... • Praxis, Perspectives, and Methods of Ghanaian Popular Music: A Special
Issue in Honor of John Collins
    • Abstract: The 2017 issue of Ghana Studies honors the scholarship of E. John Collins, Professor of Music at the University of Ghana, Legon, and founding director of the Bokoor African Popular Music Archives Foundation (BAPMAF). As a special issue, it draws attention to the sweeping contributions John has made during his illustrious career as a scholar, journalist, bandleader, guitarist, union activist, and recording engineer. It is no exaggeration to state that over the last four decades John has revolutionized understandings of Ghanaian popular music and theater. More generally, he is one of a handful of scholars who have pioneered the study of African popular culture, arguing for its political and cultural significance in ... Read More

  • John Collins: Highlife's Accidental Archivist
    • Abstract: "I've always been inquisitive," John Collins said in a 1993 interview.1 Innate curiosity and fate propelled John Collins onto a life path unique in the history of Ghana or, indeed, much of Africa. In 1952, at the tender age of eight, fate brought John from his British homeland to the Gold Coast colony where his father helped establish the Department of Philosophy at the University of Ghana during the final years of British rule. Yet fate also sent John home: his parents' divorce prompted an abrupt return to Britain for the remainder of John's childhood. However, it was curiosity that brought him back to independent Ghana in 1969. He came with a guitar in tow and equipped with the knowledge of how to play rock and ... Read More

  • Building "A Home Away from Home": Musical Spaces and Diasporic "Feedback"
           from London to Accra, 1950s–1980s
    • Abstract: John Collins's research has served as the basis for much of the work on Ghana's popular music. His interviews and personal archives have provided readers with an account of the words and actions of Ghanaian musicians, such as Kofi Ghanaba (formerly Guy Warren) and E. T. Mensah. Collins has examined the experiences of Ghanaian musicians who had the opportunity to travel overseas, as well as African Americans' "musical feedback" on West Africa.1 After World War II, many West African musicians traveled to London for work or study.2 In the cases where these men (as female artists rarely had this opportunity) spent their days washing dishes or taking a university course, they used their nights to work at clubs and learn ... • "Worshipping in My Head": Everyday Devotional Practices and Disciplines of
           Listening among Ghanaian Christians
    • Abstract: Taking as a starting point the premise that listening is a historically and socially constituted practice, in this article I examine ways of listening as an integral part of everyday devotional practices among Ghanaian Christians. My specific interest is in how technologically mediated practices of listening are part of the formation and transformation of religious subjectivity and how listening is framed as a religious and devotional practice. In particular, I focus on how recorded music features in the everyday lives of born-again believers and how they use Christian popular music for religious purposes and in negotiating their identity as Christians. Building on earlier research on the ritual use of music in the ... Read More

  • "Kekeli Nedo!": The Influence of the Church on Musical Practices in Ghana
    • Abstract: The Christian church has played a vital and enduring role in shaping musical practices in Ghana in ways that far exceed the boundaries of formal religious life. In their own unique ways, the musical traditions of the three dominant categories of churches in Ghana have led to significant innovations that have shaped the musical cultures and practices inside and outside church settings. These include the introduction of Christian themes into traditional, folk, and popular highlife music as well as concert party plays; art musicians composing in four-part harmony; the proliferation of choral ensembles in Ghana; and the creation of a community of Western classical music and African art music lovers. Although a neat ... Read More

  • Toward a "Culturally Responsive Music Curriculum": Harnessing the Power of
Ghanaian Popular Music in Ghana's Public Education Sector
    • Abstract: In the early hours of a typical school day in Ghana, on a Tuesday in September 2006, some 42 kindergartners in a public school in Cape Coast marched from their everyday morning assembly to their classroom, where a video camera had been inconspicuously planted as part of a study on the overt responses of children to three musical styles: classical, traditional, and popular (Kutor, 2007).1 When the children arrived and settled down in the classroom, the researcher turned on the music at an optimal volume and stepped out to reduce any influence that her presence might have imposed on the reactions of the children to the music.2 There was no teacher or supervisor; the children were all by themselves. They were ... Read More

  • Retuning Imperial Intentions: The Gold Coast Police Band, West African
Students, and a 1947 Tour of Great Britain
    • Abstract: In December 1947, H. M. Collins of the West Africa Section of the British Colonial Office penned a letter to Tom Stenning, the bandmaster of the Gold Coast Police Band in Accra. The two-page letter, which Collins insisted was long overdue, concerned the Band's recently completed four-month tour of Great Britain. From early May until mid-September, the Band, which comprised 34 members of the colony's police force, had traveled throughout England, Wales, and Scotland, giving dozens of public performances, appearing on British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) radio and television programs, and gaining great fanfare in the British press. Stenning, who had overseen the ensemble since 1943, had joined Collins as one of the ... Read More

  • From Primitivism to Pan-Africanism: Remaking Modernist Aesthetics in
           Postcolonial Nigeria
    • Abstract: National independence struggles across Africa, and the formerly colonized world, were accompanied by artistic revivals that linked local expressive styles to Pan-Africanism, Negritude, and global anticolonial movements. Artists and intellectuals reimagined an aesthetic that would refract new political identities and challenge simplistic, racialized dichotomies between European and African, West and non-West. They reassessed notions of the modern, the popular, and the traditional in calibrating racial, cultural, linguistic, and class-based affiliations in new national terms. In the years around Nigeria's independence from British rule in 1960, the city of Ibadan, just north of Lagos, was at the center of one such ... • Popular Performance and Culture in Ghana: The Past 50 Years
    • Abstract: This paper examines contemporary African culture from the mid-20th century through the lens of the popular arts. Although Ghana is the focus, first I look at some of the general features of what is a transcultural sub-Saharan phenomenon and take the story back to the late 19th century, when popular cultural forms began to be created by the newly emerging African urban masses, the maritime workers, and the cash-crop farmers, who blended or "syncretized" local forms with those of Europe and America (including its black diaspora), introduced through colonial soldiers, missionaries, and traders, as well as through then available forms of mass media. Despite their hybrid nature, these new cultural forms contained and ... Read More

  • Jazz Cosmopolitanism in Accra: Five Musical Years in Ghana by Steven Feld
           (review)
    • Abstract: Jazz Cosmopolitanism presents a nuanced and complex theorization of the sonic, material, and imagined connections of the Black Atlantic through the words and music of Ghanaian musicians. The birthplace of hybrid musical styles including highlife, palmwine, and bɔbɔɔbɔ, Ghana has been fertile ground for such soundings and imaginings for well over a hundred years. In his written compliment to a series of DVDs and CDs, Steven Feld offers us a glimpse into the music and philosophies of three jazz musicians (Guy Warren/Ghanaba, Nii Noi Nortey, and Nii Otoo Annan) and a por por squeeze-bulb honk-horn ensemble invented by and for the Accra La Drivers Union—multifaceted subjects all—in 21st-century Accra. Drawing from the ... Read More

  • Highlife Saturday Night: Popular Music and Social Change in Urban Ghana by
           Nate Plageman (review)
    • Abstract: The social and cultural change associated with the rise and proliferation of urban centers in Africa under colonial and early independent rule has been a founding analytical theme in Africanist popular music studies, particularly in the context of West Africa. Highlife music, one of the region's earliest and most influential forms of popular music, has attracted a wealth of scholarly attention since the 1970s, resulting in the pioneering and prolific work of John Collins, as well as writings by David Coplan, Sjaak van der Geest, and Kofi E. Agovi, among other scholars. Given this considerable body of literature, another book-length publication on highlife music and urbanization ran the risk of appearing ... Read More

  • Granny Nanny Come Oh: Jamaican Maroon Kromanti and Kumina Music and Other
Oral Traditions by Granny Nanny Cultural Group (review)
    • Abstract: The double-CD album Granny Nanny Come Oh: Jamaican Maroon Kromanti and Kumina Music and Other Oral Traditions, by the Granny Nanny Cultural Group, offers an aural excursion into the sociocultural and historical world of the Moore Town Maroons, one of several Maroon societies in Jamaica. This album remains rooted in veneration of the eponymous Maroon leader and warrior, Queen Nanny, as it explores several themes related to Maroon culture. The Moore Town Maroons are arguably one of the earliest independent polities in the Western Hemisphere, having been recognized by the British after securing their independence in 1739. The album's 31 recordings include Maroon songs, drumming, oral history, and Maroon language. ... Read More
