  • Endangered Scholars Worldwide
    • Abstract: The information in this quarterly print report is current as of March 15, 2018. The situation of scholars and students around the world changes on a daily basis. For the most up-to-date information and ways in which you can be involved in calling for the freedom of endangered scholars and students, please visit us online at www.endangeredscholarsworldwide.net or follow us at www.facebook.com/endangered scholars. In these pages we introduce new cases that have come to our attention over the past three months and provide basic information about continuing cases—a description of charges and potential or actual reported sentences. If you are aware of a scholar or student whose case you believe we should investigate ... Read More

  • Introduction
    • Abstract: since social research is a quarterly journal and each of its issues is focused on a single theme, we must plan long in advance of publication and invite authors a year or two before an issue appears. As a consequence, we cannot hope to be timely, although sometimes—almost by chance—we are. The current issue is one of those cases when an enduring subject, that of social norms—how they arise, how they change, why some change quickly and others slowly—is also topical, and for many of us unfortunately so.This issue is topical because we in the United States currently have a president who, along with many in his administration, has flouted norms of behavior that have long been associated with the presidency and with ... • Norm Change: Trendsetters and Social Structure
    • Abstract: the explanation of social norms change faces two main challenges. One is to define precisely what social norms are. The social science literature is not very precise in this respect, as different collective behaviors often are conflated under the label “norm.” Here we adopt a definition of social norms (Bicchieri 2006, 2016) that lets us specify the necessary elements of norm change. The other challenge is to understand the mechanisms of norm dynamics. Both individual actions and social structure play a role in norm emergence and change, as the network structure within which individuals interact may foster or even prevent social change. Moreover, individuals are heterogeneous in many respects, including norm ... Read More

  • Norms in the Evolution of Social Order
    • Abstract: norms occupy a crucial place in theories of social order. in this article, I discuss some of the contributions and limits of norms with respect to the evolution of social order. The problem of social order—that is, the attainment of cooperation among large numbers of individuals—is fundamental to disciplines ranging from evolutionary biology to economics, psychology, political science, sociology, and anthropology. No one can adequately represent the various approaches to this problem that are taken in all these disciplines. In what follows, I sketch out and assess what I consider to be the main explanations currently at play.Social order holds to the extent that the actions of multiple individuals within a system ... • Emulation and the Transformation of Social Norms
    • Abstract: suppose we want to get other people to do (or not to do) something. There are various strategies we might employ. We could take those people’s preferences as given and try to alter their behavior by altering their incentives through sanctions or rewards. Alternatively, we could try to persuade them to alter their preferences. Both of these strategies can be problematic, however. The latter strategy is highly ambitious in one way (changing people is hard), the former in another (it can be hard to make sanctions stick).A third strategy is less ambitious and for that reason more promising. This is the strategy of “informing people’s preferences.” Here, we take people’s preferences as given and simply provide people ... Read More

  • Unleashed
    • Abstract: In the late 1980s, when I was a visiting professor at Columbia Law School, I happened to pass, in the hallway near my office, a law student (female) speaking to an older law professor (male). To my amazement, the professor was stroking the student’s hair. I thought I saw, very briefly, a grimace on her face. It was a quick flash. When he left, I said to her, “That was completely inappropriate. He shouldn’t have done that.” Her response was dismissive: “It’s fine. He’s an old man. It’s really not a problem.”Thirty minutes later, I heard a knock on my door. It was the student. She was in tears. She said, “He does this all the time. It’s horrible. My boyfriend thinks I should make a formal complaint, but I don’t want ... Read More

    • Abstract: norms are rules about which there is some degree of consensus and that are socially enforced (Horne 2001).1 Norms can mandate, encourage, allow, discourage, and forbid behaviors. When norms are in place, people expect others to react negatively to violations and positively to compliance (Horne 2009). Thus norms can be conceptualized as expectations about the social acceptability of behaviors. We refer to such expectations as normative expectations (Bicchieri 2017). While some scholars have identified factors that contribute to the emergence of new norms (Coleman 1990; Ullmann-Margalit 1977), researchers still understand relatively little about how norms change. We argue that behavioral regularities help explain norm ... • Intervening to Change Social Norms: When Does It Work'
    • Abstract: social norms are an increasingly popular target for interventions designed to change behavior. The logic of these interventions is simple: Change people’s beliefs about what other people think is appropriate and desirable behavior, and their own behavior will fall in line. Participants in a norm-based intervention may learn that the majority of people buckle up when they get in the car, bring recyclable bags to the grocery store, or reuse their towels when they stay in a hotel. They may learn that their neighbors use less energy than they do, their fellow physicians prescribe fewer antibiotics than they do, or their peers approve of heavy drinking less than they assume. They may learn that the people who matter in ... Read More

  • Social Norms Change: Believing Makes It So
    • Abstract: how do we change harmful social practices, abandon old social norms, and/or adopt beneficial new ones' Two key maxims apply:enough people have to believe that enough other people are changing, andseeing is believing.A brute fact, such as Yosemite Falls, exists whether or not anyone believes that it does; an institutional fact (including social norms), such as a marriage, exists if and only if enough relevant people believe that it does (Searle 1995).Social norms originate in capacities of joint attention and pretend play that emerge in the first years of human life (Schmidt and Tomasello 2012). Joint attention begins with the infant calling the attention of the caretaker to an object, such that both infant and ... Read More

  • Externalities, Social Networks, and the Emergence of Norms: A Critical
Analysis and Extension of James Coleman’s Theory
    • Abstract: Norms are pervasive in everyday life. They specify what is allowed, prescribed, or prohibited. Many norms are stated explicitly, such as laws, which are often well known. This holds for many paragraphs of the penal code. Most norms, however, are not explicitly formulated, and sometimes we are not even aware of them. For example, when people meet and have a conversation, it is the rule to keep a certain physical distance from each other. This rule is automatically followed, and many are not aware of it. When we encounter a friend, we address him or her in a certain way, we talk about specific themes (and not about others), and say goodbye using certain linguistic expressions. In former times, duels took place ... Read More

  • Competing Norms of Free Expression and Political Tolerance
    • Abstract: fifty years after iconic student protests in berkeley forced the university of California to end restrictions on campus political activism, free speech controversies are again roiling American universities. In a remarkable role reversal, however, the student protesters now demand that universities censor and cancel events featuring speakers who espouse controversial views about politics, race, religion, gender, and sexuality. Administrators who refuse to curb their institutions’ commitment to free expression face disruptive and potentially violent demonstrations by students who often seek not just to air opposition to offensive speech but to suppress it entirely.Observers across the political spectrum lament what ... • Social Norms for Citizenship
    • Abstract: A social norm is a principle or rule of behavior, which is maintained among members of a group of people both by trying to follow it and by trying to enforce it upon each other. Both of these effects are contingent on the existence of the norm and on the effort of others to maintain it (Bicchieri 2006). In part because of this contingency, social norms differ from abstract moral principles. And the existence of the contingency gives social norms a kind of stickiness. It is difficult to get them started, because a group must accept them, and, once started, they tend to maintain themselves. Social norms also differ from laws, which are usually enforced by an institution dedicated to enforcement. The enforcement of ... Read More

  • Corporal Punishment: Legal Reform as a Route to Changing Norms
    • Abstract: the term “harmful traditional practices” typically brings to mind child marriage, female genital mutilation/cutting, and so-called “honor killings,” but rarely corporal punishment. Yet corporal punishment is arguably the most pervasive harmful traditional practice children experience today. In nearly every part of the world, parents use physical punishment to “discipline” their children. Such corporal punishment typically takes the form of hitting a child with a bare hand or an object such as a stick or paddle. A 2014 survey found that four of every five children between the ages of two and 14—an estimated 1 billion globally—experience physical punishment in their home on a regular basis (UNICEF 2014, 96).The ...
