  • Note from the Editor
    • Abstract: This issue of the Seoul Journal of Korean Studies presents a wide range of studies on Korean religions, literature, and politics. I am excited in particular by four articles that deal with different Korean religious traditions, and how each of those traditions has reacted to the challenges of a changing society. In the first article (as usual, articles appear in chronological order), Jang Jiyeon attempts a periodization of Korean geomancy. Although grave geomancy (ŭmt’aek p’ungsu) is the form that most people associate with Korea, this is in fact a fairly late development in the history of Korean geomancy. The author argues that there are at least three distinct periods: in the first, geomancy was ... Read More

  • Korean Geomancy from the Tenth through the Twentieth Centuries: Changes
           and Continuities
    • Abstract: Geomancy (Ch. fengshui, K. p’ungsu 風水) refers to a corpus of knowledge, originating from China, regarding the relationship between humans and nature.1 It is considered a theory of either pursuing fortune or avoiding misfortune by aspiring for a harmony between manmade structures and the surrounding natural environment. For example, if a house or a grave is built in a place where the vital material force (Ch. shengqi, K. saenggi 生氣) of earth is concentrated, the interred’s descendants will receive good fortune in the future, if not in the present (Ch. fafu, K. palbok 發福), thanks to the influence of that material force. Geomancy has spread to various regions in East Asia, including Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Okinawa ... Read More

  • Re-thinking Married Bhikṣu: Examination of Bhikṣu Ordinations and
Clerical Marriage in 1920s Korean Buddhism
    • Abstract: It is well known that the monastic rules of Korean Buddhism—including those that governed monastic marriage—underwent a tremendous transformation during the colonial period, especially when the Japanese colonial government removed the distinct disadvantages to married monks from the head-branch temple laws (ponmal sabŏp 本末寺法) in 1926. However, there has been little research on the bhikṣu ordination practices of Korean monks and the connection between bhikṣu ordination and the rise of clerical marriage during the colonial period. Any attempt to understand how monastic rules—including the rule of celibacy—changed during the colonial period requires a consideration of the ways in which Korean monks’ thoughts on ... Read More

  • The Modern City from Imperial and Colonial Eyes: Focusing on Yokomitsu
Riichi’s Shanghai (1932) and Kim Kirim’s The Weather Map (1936)
    • Abstract: Korean literary modernism during the colonial period was deeply engaged with contemporaneous Japanese literary modernism, as well as English modernism and European avant-garde. In the passage of a mere three decades, starting from the 1910s, Korean literary circles experienced a diverse range of Western artistic and literary movements formulated between the sixteenth century and the contemporary era, as the Korean modernist Kim Kirim pointed out in his essay “Chosŏn munhak ŭi pansŏng” (Reflection on Korean literature).1 The reception of literary modernism from the late 1920s to the mid-1930s, bequeathed to colonial Korea via Japanese modernist journals such as Bungei jidai (Literary age; 1924–1927), Shi to ... • Beyond Patron and Client: Historicizing the Dialectics of US-ROK Relations
amid Park Chung Hee’s Independent Defense Industry Development in South
           Korea, 1968–1979
    • Abstract: Under the Park Chung Hee regime (1961–1979), the Republic of Korea (ROK, or South Korea) promoted a policy of “self-reliant national defense” (chaju kukpang) in the 1970s in an all-out effort to enable arms production independent of US control. The defense industry that emerged as a result of Park’s push for self-reliant national defense has exerted enormous influence on South Korea’s military, economy, and relations with the United States over the last fifty years. Nevertheless, research offering deep historical analysis of South Korea’s defense industry development remains meager. Partly due to a lack of available primary sources on the defense industry, as well as the prevailing notion of the ROK as a ... Read More

  • Korean Protestantism in the Age of “Surplus of Positivity: ”: A
Socio-cultural Analysis of Church Defaults in South Korea*
    • Abstract: On July 1, 2013, a church appraised at approximately US$50 million was put up for sale, the most expensive religious facility in the history of court sales in Korea.1 This became headline news in the Maeil kyŏngje, a well-known financial newspaper in Korea (U Cheyun 2013). The auction item, finding it too difficult to secure a new owner due to its very large valuation, in the end was sold to the World Mission Society Church of God, a Korea-based international religious organization judged as a cult by orthodox Protestant denominations in Korea, a contention that has become another large issue in the Korean Protestant community (Kim Chinyŏng 2014). This financial crisis is not a problem solely of Protestant ... Read More

  • Gender Issues in Contemporary Won Buddhism: Focusing on the Status of
           Female Clerics
    • Abstract: A recent study of female Korean religious practitioners and clergy found that at the beginning of the twenty-first century they are still facing many hurdles in their quest for equality with their male counterparts (Sŏgangdae chonggyo yŏn’guso 2014). As a result, many of the established religions such as Catholicism and Buddhism (Jogye order) have seen a steep decline in the number of novice nuns, while female clergy in Protestant churches are still a small minority. The case of Won Buddhism offers an interesting perspective on the predicament of female clergy in modern South Korea. Won Buddhism opened itself to female clergy from the very beginning, and now counts the highest percentage of female clergy among ... Read More

  • Traditional Korean Ceramics: A Look by a Scientist by Carolyn Kyongshin
           Koh Choo (review)
    • Abstract: As can be surmised from its title, this book is a comprehensive survey of traditional Korean ceramics written by a scientist. Its author, Carolyn Kyongshin Koh Choo, is a scientist who has taken an unusual career path. Trained as a physical chemist at MIT, she turned her research focus to traditional Korean ceramics in the early 1990s, establishing the Department of Science of Cultural Properties at Chung-Ang University as the institutional base for her extraordinary project to “understand the beauty of [Korean] ceramic wares from a scientific point of view” (9). The guiding motive of this book is not especially different from that of the prominent 20th-century connoisseurs of Korean ceramic arts. ... Read More

  • The Accusation: Forbidden Stories from Inside North Korea by Bandi
           (review)
    • Abstract: The Accusation is an extraordinary book. It is a collection of seven short stories written in beautiful prose and conveying the author’s earth-shattering despair over the suffocating social system of modern-day North Korea. Aside from its literary qualities, however, The Accusation’s publication is an extraordinary feat. Originally published in 2014 in Korea (as Kobal), it is the first book manuscript ever written secretly in North Korea, smuggled out, and published abroad. Its writer, Bandi—a pseudonym meaning ”firefly” in Korean—has long been a prominent writer in North Korea whose works were particularly widely published in the 1970s (p. 243). He remains a member of the Chosŏn Writer’s League’s ... Read More
