  • The María A. Salgado Graduate Student Essay Award
    • Abstract: Professor María A. Salgado earned her Master's degree in Romance Languages from our department in 1960. After earning her Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from the University of Maryland in 1967, Professor Salgado was invited to return as a faculty member, becoming the first woman hired as an Assistant Professor in the history of our department. The Zeta Psi chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Hispanic Honor Society, was established under her mentorship the following year. María A. Salgado became a true pioneer in the field of Latin American Studies and developed virtually every single course, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, from the colonial era to the present. From 1986 to 1996, she directed our ... Read More

  • Progression / Regression: Hypnotism and the Superstitious in Maupassant's
           Le Horla
    • Abstract: Guy de Maupassant's novella Le Horla, published in 1887, was written during what is now considered the "golden age" of hypnotism in France.1 The 1870s and 1880s have been documented by scholars such as Alan Gauld, Dominique Barrucand, and Henri F. Ellenberger as the time during which hypnotism as a medical treatment gained its most scientifically recognised status in France. This status was mainly ensured by the research of Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), whose lectures at the Salpêtrière asylum were famous not just in France but throughout all of Europe, and Hippolyte Bernheim (1840-1919), who was based at the Université de Nancy. This period also saw hypnotism being used seriously within medicine not only as a ... Read More

    • Abstract: Bernard Noël's Un trajet en hiver (2004) presents itself as a travel diary, recounting a series of thirty-four trips on the train and one very brief visit to the Buffet de la Gare, in Lausanne. That simple description is reductive, of course, and perhaps not entirely faithful to the purposes that animate the text. For Un trajet en hiver is not strictly speaking a diary: there is no question of a daily practice of writing, there are no temporal indications prefacing the entries, and there is no effort to seize events of personal life that may have occurred apart from those train trips. Yet Bernard Noël is on record as claiming that all of his books may be read like fragments of a diary, whatever other appearance ... Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More

           modernidad
• Bécquer's Extrapolation to Express the Ineffable
    • Abstract: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer was a poet of profound sensibility with keen insight into the human heart. His verses strive to convey the deepest sentiments of love, loss, rejection, and nostalgia. Yet, Bécquer always felt that language was unable to express his message; he struggled with the limitations of words to communicate.1 In the "Introducción sinfónica" to his works, Bécquer wrote: "Pero ¡ay, que entre el mundo de la idea y el de la forma existe un abismo que solo puede salvar la palabra; y la palabra, tímida y perezosa, se niega a secundar sus esfuerzos!" (Obras completas, Aguilar 50).In his Rimas Bécquer also laments this imprisonment within the constraints of language. In his famous Rima XI,2 which many editors ... Read More

  • Lo Unheimlich en La carne de René de Virgilio Piñera
    • Abstract: En el 1952 Virgilio Piñera publicó La carne de René. Read More

Read More
