Read More

Read More

Read More

  • Before 1898: Architecture and Nation in Emilia Pardo Bazán's El
           tesoro de Gastón
    • Abstract: Emilia Pardo Bazán's El tesoro de Gastón (1897) has seldom been linked to the author's concerns for the state of the Spanish nation prior to the disaster of 1898. Dismissed by Clarín as a "cuento de viejas … cursi del estilo" ("Palique" 161–62) and described by contemporary critics as "lightweight … although … not without charm" (Hemingway 4), the piece has been considered "una novelita … llena de gracia y poesía" (Clemessy, "Emilia Pardo Bazán, novelista" 45), an example of Pardo Bazán's "segunda fase de creación … el género de novela aristocrática" (Clemessy, Emilia Pardo Bazán como novelista 355–57), but hardly ever as a work that brings forward the novelist's serious preoccupation with Spain's pre-1898 national ...
culturales, formas literarias y dinámicas del presente eds. by Amar
• México's Nobodies: the Cultural Legacy of the Soldadera and Afro-Mexican
Women by B. Christine Arce (review)
    • Abstract: México's Nobodies confronts the systematic silences, invisibility, and misappropriations of women that exemplary feminist texts of cultural history inevitably face when confronting the patriarchal spheres of history and nation-building. Written with a beautiful prose and exhaustive research, Arce's book defies the "nobodiness" of la soldadera and la mulata, two paradoxical protagonists of songs, film, literature, and art who have been "relegated to the margins of Mexico's official memory and history despite that their figures flood the arts" (2). While México's Nobodies joins a corpus of cultural criticism on the soldadera generated since the end of the twentieth century—Elizabeth Salas, Ana Lau and Carmen Ramos ... Read More

  • Magical Realism and the History of Emotions in Latin America by
           Jerónimo Arellano (review)
    • Abstract: In this compelling and engaging volume, Jerónimo Arellano feeds from one of the most "exquisite corpses" in Latin American culture and literary studies—magical realism. Arellano intersects two main areas of study: the peaks and valleys of Latin American magical realist fiction and the cultural history of emotions. He reads magical realism against the grain and rejects studying it as a by-product of colonial wonder that renders its aesthetics through a self-exoticizing neocolonial lens, choosing instead to focus on its affective orientation. His interest resides in the marvelous realia present in Latin American fiction and material culture and therefore his focus is both transhistorical and transnational. Starting ... Read More

    • Abstract: Coloniality, Religion, and the Law in the Early Iberian World, editado por Santa Arias y Raúl Marrero-Fente, indaga de qué manera la colaboración entre el gobierno y la Iglesia católica proporcionó una base para la colonialidad. • Alva Ixtlilxochitl's Native Archive and the Circulation of Knowledge in
Colonial Mexico by Amber Brian (review)
    • Abstract: In the last two decades, several highly significant Nahuatl-language texts produced during the seventeenth century have been brought to light and now appear in English translation, representing major contributions to our understanding of prehispanic and colonial Mexico (Arthur J. O. Anderson and Susan Schroeder's Codex Chimalpahin volumes 1-2, and Camilla Townsend's Here in This Year: Seventeenth-Century Nahuatl Annals of the Tlaxcala-Puebla Valley are fine examples). As this ongoing scholarship increases our understanding of native intellectual projects and makes them more accessible, new questions arise. How, for instance, did indigenous knowledge circulate within colonial society, and in what ways did it shape ... Read More

• Abstract: Diseccionar los laureles. Read More

  • Pariah in the Desert: The Heroic and the Monstrous in Horacio Quiroga by
           Todd S. Garth (review)
Read More

  • Mexican Melodrama: Film and Nation from the Golden Age to the New Wave by
           Elena Lahr-Vivaz (review)
    • Abstract: Lahr-Vivaz's first book is a fresh, comparative project that reads "new-wave" Mexican films of the 1990s-early 2000s in conjunction with classic melodramas from Mexico's Golden Age (1930-58). Offering in-depth analyses of historical and industrial contexts, Mexican Melodrama maps the development and subsequent unraveling of nosotros, or the imagined Mexican nation created through cinema, in relation to melodrama. This book follows sustained interest in the Golden Age period, including Ramírez Berg's The Classical Mexican Cinema: The Poetics of the Exceptional Golden Age Films (2015), and gives further attention to what LahrVivaz terms the "new-wave" (or nuevo cine mexicano or new Mexican cinema) that "emerged in ... • Food Matters: Alonso Quijano's Diet and the Discourse of Food in Early
Modern Spain by Carolyn Nadeau (review)
    • Abstract: Carolyn Nadeau's new book resoundingly demonstrates that food indeed matters in early modern Spain. Her exploration of Alonso Quijano's diet, as depicted in the first paragraphs of Don Quijote, opens the culinary, historical, and literary worlds of these foods to reveal the complexity and interconnectedness of Spain's early modern foodways. From the influence of ethnic Muslim and Jewish cooking in elite cooking manuals, to hierarchies of meat, abstemious legumes, the humble nighttime salad, and ingredients transferred between the Old and New Worlds, Nadeau's inventive study reveals what these foods communicated to those who ate them and how discourses about them in literary texts, histories, archival records, and ... • Espectros: Ghostly Hauntings in Contemporary Transhispanic Narratives eds.
by Alberto Ribas-Casasayas, and Amanda L. Petersen (review)
    • Abstract: The body of work focusing on the pervasiveness of ghosts, haunting, and spectrality in our cultural presents, pasts, and futures has been increasing year on year. Derrida's Specters of Marx (1993) marks the definitive entry of the ghost and haunting into our critical languages. Since that moment, scholarship has turned to perceptions of the present as a frail temporality that is continuously shaken by the debts of the past and the promises of the future. This body of work has also turned its attention to spectrality's cartographies. Humanity's trajectory is steeped in violence and amnesia, so that every culture can lay claim to a haunted history. The editors and authors of the remarkable collection Espectros: ... Read More

    • Abstract: A book like Maureen Shanahan and Ana María Reyes's wide-ranging collection of essays, Simón Bolívar. Travels and Transformations of a Cultural Icon, has been a long time coming. It was almost fifty years ago, in 1969, that the venerable Venezuelan historian Germán Carrera Damas published El culto a Bolívar: Esbozo para un estudio de la historia de las ideas en Venezuela (Universidad Central de Venezuela), a rigorous critique of the officially sanctioned nationalist narrative of Venezuela, in which he coined the phrase "the cult of Bolívar." • The Merchant of Havana: The Jew in the Cuban Abolitionist Archive by
           Stephen Silverstein (review)
    • Abstract: For much of the nineteenth century, Cuba did not have a commercial bank. Creole planters in need of financing had little recourse other than loans from Spanish merchants who doubled as private bankers. By 1863, a staggering 95 percent of sugar plantations in Cuba were mortgaged, many at exorbitantly high interest rates (83). In his compact and compelling book Stephen Silverstein argues that financing practices and foreign capital were more central to debates about abolitionism and political independence than previous studies have appreciated. He adds an important dimension to the long-standing scholarship about the alleged incompatibility of slavery and industrialized sugar production, arguing that sugar mills ... Read More

  • Latin America at Fin-de-Siècle Exhibitions: Modern Cultures of Visuality
           by Alejandra Uslenghi (review)
    • Abstract: The Latin American fin de siglo is a rich site for analysis given its prevalent position in the expansion of global capital and advances in media communication. Dramatic increases in textual production, particularly periodicals and magazines, together with technological innovation, resulted in major shifts in the representation of culture. These advances are evident in the way texts were produced and disseminated along with the rise in visual reproduction in print, photography, and cinematography. Global exhibitions have been a fruitful site of analysis for scholars to explore the transformations of the turn of the twentieth century given that the large gatherings garnered extensive media and literary attention. ... • New Maricón Cinema: Outing Latin American Film by Vinodh Venkatesh
           (review)
    • Abstract: Up until the turn of the twenty-first century, homosexuality scarcely materialized on screen in Latin American cinema. Those features that did carve out a space for lesbigay or queer desire in the twentieth century did so by recurring to reductive stereotypes, or, as Vinodh Venkatesh persuasively argues in New Maricón Cinema, by allowing the viewer to "see" sexual difference, but only from a sanitized distance. This timely monograph details the relatively rapid transformation of representations of non-normative desire in Latin American cinema from films that allowed the viewer to see same-sex desiring bodies, to those that compel us to feel and empathize with them. This shift from seeing to feeling, from the scopic ... Read More

  • The Epic of Juan Latino: Dilemmas of Race and Religion in Renaissance
Spain by Elizabeth R. Wright (review)
    • Abstract: This riveting account of the first black writer from slavery's diaspora whose name we can identify is not merely the equivalent for early modern studies of what might fairly be called a biopic; instead, its scope is more ambitious and wide-ranging, as its subtitle indicates. The genius of this book lies in its author's ability to tie an admittedly ephemeral exercise in Neo-Latin epic (what an ungenerous observer might dismiss as little more than a pedagogical exercise written by a Renaissance schoolmaster) to the more pressing, indeed timeless, issues of race and religion. The two-pronged approach Wright takes to do this includes a panoramic lens through which to view not only the epic material treated—i.e. the ... Read More

  • Race and the Aesthetics of Frivolity in the Work of Count François G.
           de Cisneros
    • Abstract: When José Martí visited Coney Island in 1881, he wrote how seeing his deformed reflection in a carnival mirror motivated him to interrogate the misery and injustice hidden by the spectacle of what he saw as manufactured fun for the masses in a landscape of spiritual poverty and unbridled materialism. Martí's liberationist project hinged on a Latin spirituality aimed at curbing the alienating effects of capitalism. The bibliography on Martí's spiritual call to arms is extensive, and it is not my intention to review it in this article. I use it rather as a point of departure to recuperate the work of another Cuban writer in New York City, a forgotten Cuban dandy named Francisco García Cisneros, whose writing career ... Read More

           Saer's El limonero real

In public statements, Saer has consistently resisted association with regionalism, calling it "una concepción pobre de la literatura" (Saer and Piglia 65). Though Saer's cursory dismissal of regionalist literature risks making a straw man out of a complex and heterogeneous genre, his objections to the ... Read More

  • Passivity and Nonhuman Absorption in Julieta Campos's "Celina o los gatos"
    • Abstract: In her celebrated novel, Tiene los cabellos rojizos y se llama Sabina (1974), Cuban-Mexican author Julieta Campos writes of the ocean: "El mar = res nullius = cosa de nadie" (110). The reference is to the sea's legal classification as res nullius: an abstract, common space that lies between nations and separates continents, the sea is no one's thing. Covering more than three-fourths of the earth's surface, the sea envelops the planet, and is a space that cannot sustain human life (Mentz 586). Like outer space, it cannot be technologically mastered, nor claimed by any single state, and as such, constitutes a commons (Milun 76). Campos's novel dramatizes through the ruminations of a woman staring at the ocean from a ... Read More

  • A Recipe for a Modern Nation: Miguel Primo de Rivera and Spanish Food
           Culture
    • Abstract: When Miguel Primo de Rivera y Orbaneja (1870-1930) overthrew the country's parliamentary government in 1923, establishing himself as dictator, he embarked on a top-down regeneration or authoritarian modernization of Spain.1 Insisting on the modernizing message of his regime (Ben-Ami 88), Spain's self-appointed "iron surgeon" tried for nearly a decade to put Spain on a par with the rest of Europe by confronting issues of separatism, economic backwardness, and lackluster modernization. Scholars argue that much more attention needs to be paid to twentieth-century Spain's lesser-known dictatorship, in part because Primo de Rivera, though failing to realize many of his ambitions, "inaugurated policies that were to ...
