    • Abstract: We are happy to publish the first thematic issue of the Journal of Korean Studies following the transfer of JKS from the University of Washington to Columbia University. Guest edited by Steven Chung (Princeton University) and Hyun Seon Park (Yonsei University), the fall 2017 thematic issue, "The Cold War in Korean Cinemas," offers seven articles that complement each other in the ways they each redefine not only Korean cinema but the Cold War itself. This issue provides both a deep engagement with the archive and a set of major theoretical interventions. We look forward to continuing the tradition of fall thematic issues over the coming years. The fall 2017 issue marks the close of our one-year transition to Duke ... Read More

  • Guest Editors' Introduction
    • Abstract: The essays collected in this special issue participate in a larger scholarly reappraisal of the core-periphery logic and finite periodization by which the global Cold War has been written into history. Through the narrower methodological frameworks of diplomatic or military historiography or under the auspices of nationalist or liberal-triumphalist discourses, that history cleanly divided the Cold War world into ideologically opposed regional blocs and marked its demise with the fall of the Berlin Wall. The overarching contest of the Cold War was, moreover, understood to be a war of ideas that descended into military conflict through proxy in remote corners of the world and outside the North Atlantic and Central ... • Cold War Cosmopolitanism: The Asia Foundation and 1950s Korean Cinema
    • Abstract: South Korean films became visible on the world stage for the first time in the late 1950s. Between 1957 and 1960, at least nine Korean films were shown at the Asian Film Festival; more screened in Berlin, San Francisco, and other festivals in the West. Among the first to receive prizes were Yi Pyŏngil's The Wedding Day (1956), which won the best comedy award at the fourth Asian Film Festival, held in Tokyo in 1957, and Han Hyŏngmo's Because I Love You (1958), which took a prize for best choreography at the same festival held in Kuala Lumpur two years later.1 Neither of them tells an explicitly Cold War story. The Wedding Day is a period comedy about the efforts of a social-climbing father to marry off his daughter ... Read More

  • Film Auteurism as a Cold War Governmentality: Alternative Knowledge and
           the Formation of Liberal Subjectivity
    • Abstract: The notion of cultural Cold War has been regarded as a promising framework for reevaluating the role of culture in the historical development of the Cold War, especially in recent studies in modern Korean history and culture during the Cold War.1 While this concept has extricated culture from the dominant view that has been biased by viewing culture as a mere by-product of politico-economic and military strategies, not many studies have inquired into the self-replicating mechanism of the theoretical framework that postulates culture at a strategic level.2 By positing culture as an active governing strategy, the target audience is identified with the receiver of strategic communication, and the researcher's ... • Destination Hong Kong: The Geopolitics of South Korean Espionage Films in
           the 1960s
    • Abstract: As many have already argued, the James Bond film series has been extremely popular not only in English-language territories but also in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. It is roughly estimated that half the earth's population has seen at least one James Bond film.1 First appearing with the publication of Ian Fleming's Casino Royale in 1953 and crossing over to the big screen with the screen adaptation of Dr. No in 1962, James Bond emerged at a turning point in British postwar history. It was a moment of cultural change, as Christopher Lindner argues, that saw "Britain's decline as a superpower and its reinvention as a swinging mecca for music, fashion, shopping, and youth culture."12 Likewise, Raymond Durgnat ... • Doubled Over 007: "Aryu Pondŭ" and Genre-Mixing Comedy in Korea
    • Abstract: In 1965, the Bond film From Russia with Love (1963) featuring Scottish star Sean Connery finally took the South Korean box office by storm.1 The domestic film industry, already heavily dependent upon the genre-film machine to churn out revenue, spun into overproduction with various iterations of what would soon be called "second-rate Bond" ("aryu Pondŭ") films by the press. This label denoted the secondary status of the films as belated works following existing tropes, exhibiting a self-consciousness with regards to the marginal place of Korean cinema in the world, but also indicated their low-budget aesthetic. A wave of such secondary Bond films sprang up in many East Asian cinemas, particularly in nations aligned ... Read More

  • Cold War Mnemonics: History, Melancholy, and Landscape in South Korean
           Films of the 1960s
    • Abstract: To illuminate the intricate entanglement of the historical trauma of the Korean War and the cultural politics of the Cold War, this article reflects on the political aesthetics of loss and memory, which unfolded in the visual landscape of 1960s South Korean films. In a peculiar way, South Korean films' explorations of mnemonic technologies are inextricably linked with the postwar Korean subject's dual efforts to remember historical loss and to incorporate shameful memories. Particularly, the question of the Korean War has been one of the haunting specters in Cold War historiography, as if constant exertions of recollecting the war testify to South Korea as "a mnemonic community, whose raison d'être derives from ... • Wandering Ghosts of the Cold War: Military Sex Workers in the Film Tour of
Duty (Kŏmi ŭi ttang) Jeehey Kim
    • Abstract: On a deserted US army base, we see a woman who appears to be in her sixties wielding a stick and cursing into the air. She is Pak Insun, a former military sex worker who roams the hillsides, alleys, and streets of this former camptown where she met her American husband. Conversing with invisible beings that subjected her to physical and psychological pain, she lives alone, surrounded by the paintings she makes every night. Insun curses the pimps who exploited her and talks to her absent daughter Priscilla, who lives far from this ghost town to which Insun has returned from the United States. As she passes English-language signboards—Club Las Vegas, Player, Best, Amazing—Insun tells her daughter that she lives in ... Read More

  • Departure and Repatriation as Cold War Dissensus: Domestic Ethnography in
           Korean Documentary
    • Abstract: The present national borders in East Asia were drawn as a consequence of the end of the Asia-Pacific War in 1945 and the cease-fire negotiations of the Korean War in 1953. In the new postwar mapping, the redrawing of national boundaries required repatriation and deportation of people from the Japanese metropole to the colonial countries and vice versa. In addition, the Korean War instigated significant migration between the two postcolonial states of North and South Korea. After the post–Cold War settlements that reinforced closed borders, homelands suddenly became inaccessible terrain for war exiles and colonial migrants who had not already returned. Subsequently, during postwar nation building, the Cold War ... Read More

  • The Korean State and Social Policy: How South Korea Lifted Itself from
Poverty and Dictatorship to Affluence and Democracy by Stein Ringen et
al., and; State-centric to Contested Social Governance in South Korea:
Shifting Power by Hyuk-Rae Kim (review)
    • Abstract: A late industrializing nation-state, South Korea was characterized as "the miracle of the Han river" up until the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. And it was praised for rapidly overcoming the crisis, both by international financial organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and by nation-states that went through contemporaneous national economic crises. Scholars and experts attributed these achievements to the role of the South Korean state and the strong government initiatives and intervention in business and markets that had marked its administration and bureaucracy since the Korean War.Scholarly work on the developmental state (Kim 1997; Woo-Cumings 1999) centered on ... • The Capitalist Unconscious: From Korean Unification to Transnational Korea
           by Hyun Ok Park (review)
    • Abstract: The pithy, remarkable claim at the opening of Hyun Ok Park's latest book—that "capital has already unified Korea in a transnational form" (p. 3)—is a claim about both an empirical reality and an ideological situation. The unification Park identifies is not of the territorial kind, nor does it concern separated families or irredentist notions. The empirical quality of unification revealed in Park's study is capitalist integration driven by the flow of commodities—specifically labor, money, and ideas—across the borders of North Korea, China, and South Korea. Park's fieldwork in Northeast Asia traces this flow, and the book presents fascinating interviews of the people who make these journeys. One theme among the ... Read More

  • Korea's Grievous War by Su-kyoung Hwang (review)
    • Abstract: The start of the millennium saw a turning point in the transnational public memory of the Korean War. The year 2000 coincided with an unexpected shift in contemporary popular contestations of orthodox Korean War interpretation, which suddenly ramped up to a high-profile transnational scale after the largely domestic controversies of the postdemocratization-era history wars in South Korea during the 1990s. That is, in April 2000 the Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism was awarded to the Associated Press for reporting on a massacre of unarmed Korean civilians committed by US soldiers a half century earlier. Although stories told by survivors of the No Gun Ri massacre had already appeared for several years in ... Read More

  • Tourist Distractions: Traveling and Feeling in Transnational Hallyu Cinema
           by Youngmin Choe (review)
    • Abstract: In March of 2017, the Chinese government banned its citizens from booking trips to South Korea through travel agencies as a show of displeasure with the South Korean government's decision to install THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense). The idle streets of Myŏngdong now bear little trace of the bustling energy they had enjoyed in 2016 when Hallyu tourism was at its peak; just last summer, hundreds of buses filed into Panpo Han Riverside Park, carrying eight thousand Chinese tourists to a city-sponsored samgyet' ang (ginseng chicken soup) feast and a miniconcert featuring original soundtracks from the popular television serial Descendants of the Sun (2016). Meanwhile, the flow of Japanese tourists has ... Read More
