  • Editorial Note
    • Abstract: Volume 21, number 2, is the last issue of the volumes that will be produced under my editorship at The Journal of Korean Studies. My managing editor, Tracy Stober, and I have enjoyed building the journal and hope that it has served and will continue to serve as a major vehicle for the development of Korean studies in the English-speaking world and for nurturing the kind of scholarship that builds careers in Korean studies. We’re confident that the team of Charles Armstrong and Ted Hughes at Columbia will continue to develop the journal in new and interesting directions. This final thematic issue under our watch has been guest edited by Robert Oppenheim and is devoted to what he called “The Multi-Sited History of the ... • Introduction: The Multi-Sited History of the Anthropology of Korea
    • Abstract: Five of the articles appearing in this special issue of The Journal of Korean Studies (JKS) were first presented at a short seminar at the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, convened around the same theme in November 2013. The sixth, Jong-pil Yoon’s consideration of Maurice Courant, was submitted independently to the JKS and added to the issue by mutual consent after it became clear that its subject dovetailed with the other collected papers.Ordinarily, the venue of an originating workshop or seminar is of precious little interest to readers of the ultimate published volume of contributions. Yet, as is said about the settings of certain novels and films, SAR was more important than usual ... Read More

  • Contextualizing Maurice Courant, Pioneer of Korean Studies in Europe
    • Abstract: Maurice Courant (1865–1935), who is sometimes described as an “unsung pioneer” of Korean studies in Europe, has been mainly known for his masterpiece Bibliographie coréenne (Korean bibliography), an outstanding bibliographical work on Korean literature published between 1894 and 1901.1 It is an unfortunate fact that such an exceptional work like the Bibliographie coréenne went practically unnoticed due to the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910 that discouraged Europeans from taking an active interest in Korea and its people.2Born in Paris in 1865, Courant entered the College of Law at the University of Paris in 1883 and, two years later, enrolled at the École des langues orientales vivantes (School of Eastern ... • Visualizing Seoul’s Landscapes: Percival Lowell and the Cultural
           Biography of Ethnographic Images
    • Abstract: Excavating the biography of historical ethnographic images has been the subject of vigorous anthropological debates since the publication of the groundbreaking volume Anthropology and Photography in 1992.1 Since then, pioneering scholars such as Elizabeth Edwards, Christopher Morton, James Ryan, and Anne Maxwell have demonstrated that as soon as the camera was invented in the 1840s, in England’s and France’s colonial governments’ land survey teams, academic institutions, exposition organizers, and imperial museums dispatched both professional and amateur photographers to record anthropological and archaeological fieldwork in the newly discovered colonies.2 Their research also revealed that by the early twentieth ... • Korea in the Russian and Soviet Imagination, 1850s–1945: Between
           Orientalism and Revolutionary Solidarity
    • Abstract: As is well known in culture studies, there is hardly anything stronger charged with diverse, often self-contradictory meanings in the social universe than space. As a sociocultural reality produced, reproduced, defined, and redefined in sync with the general discursive developments in society as a whole, space is neither neutral in a culture-political sense nor ever described simply factually or “objectively.”1 The descriptions of the spatial Others invariably overlap with the images derived from the given society’s diverse cognitive maps, partly inherited from earlier times and partly shaped by contemporaneous political or cultural configurations.2 The imaginary geographies of foreign space often play a ... • So Close to the Canon, but . . . : Of Franz Boas, C. C. Vinton, and Some
           Korean Things
    • Abstract: AMNH 70.0/1334 (figure 1), “mat, decorated, materials: straw, thread, twine, pigment” is a most curious object.1 Yes, it is a Korean straw mat or totchari of the long, narrow variety, a decorated mat of the sort still produced as a local handicraft on Kanghwa Island. Today, we might find a mat of this quality spread out to accommodate supplicants’ bows in front of ancestral altars or during a revival of a Confucian wedding rite, or it might be used to accommodate musicians in Korean dress who perform traditional music. In our time, the straw mat marks space for acts associated with Korean tradition. More than one hundred years after its accession, AMNH 70.0/1334 is an undeniably Korean thing; it is also eccentric ... Read More

  • Reauthenticating Race: Na Sejin and the Recycling of Colonial Physical
           Anthropology in Postcolonial Korea
    • Abstract: Over three summers, from 1930 to 1932, a group of seven Japanese physical anthropologists from Keijō Imperial University dispersed themselves into all thirteen provinces of the Korean peninsula with the aim of measuring as many Korean bodies as possible. In July 1930, Arase Susumu and Takamure Isao measured 178 men and 32 women in both provinces of Hamgyŏng, while Kohama Mototsugu and Tanabe Hidehisa traveled as a pair to the P’yŏngan provinces to measure 328 men and 74 women.1 The next summer, two different pairs (Takamure Isao and Nishioka Tatsuzō and Arase Susumu and Shima Gorō) covered the six southern provinces and measured 703 men and 271 women altogether. Lastly, in August 1932, Shima Gorō and Kawaguchi ... Read More

  • Imagining a Field Site: Preparing for Anthropological Fieldwork in South
           Korea in the Mid-1970s
    • Abstract: Arriving at Incheon International Airport in 2016 with its throngs of jets arrayed along the sides of multiple terminals and its teaming arrival hall filled with visitors from the Americas, Europe, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, not to mention Koreans heading home from vacations abroad, it is hard to reimagine arriving at Kimp’o Airport forty years ago in 1976, the year I arrived to commence fieldwork in South Korea. South Korea was off the beaten track; most Americans then viewed Korea simply, if at all, as the remote and poverty-stricken country where the United States fought an unpopular war.My purpose for coming to South Korea was to do anthropological fieldwork. I had chosen South Korea not ... Read More

  • Assimilating Seoul: Japanese Rule and the Politics of Public Space in
Colonial Korea, 1910–1945 by Todd A. Henry (review)
    • Abstract: How did Japan incorporate Korea into its empire? How did Koreans respond to the colonial project? Assimilating Seoul offers a fresh take on these questions through a study of accommodation between rulers and ruled in the course of governing spaces in the colonial city. Todd A. Henry trains his lens on specific projects connected to the broader program of assimilation. Defining his topic this way, Henry is able to illustrate the interactions that shaped society. Koreans and Japanese responded to colonial programs in a wide range of ways. By highlighting the variable impact of colonial authority on specific spaces, Assimilating Seoul offers a challenge to nationalist histories that assume the omnipotence of the ... Read More

  • Korea’s Ancient Koguryŏ Kingdom: A Socio-Political History by
           Noh Taedon (review)
    • Abstract: Despite significant progress in recent decades, Korean studies is still in its fledging stage in the United States, and ancient history is one of the most underdeveloped parts of the field. Even among South Korean historians, the study of Koguryŏ history is a latecomer. Compared to Silla history, the serious study of Koguryŏ history started much later, and it is only from the 1980s that the study of Koguryŏ history started to boom. There are multiple factors that have made it difficult to study Koguryŏ history: scarce and sometimes contradictory historical documents, Silla-centered historical views that started from the Koryŏ period (if not earlier), and most important, the fact that most of Koguryŏ territory is ... • Songs of Seoul: An Ethnography of Voice and Voicing in Christian South
           Korea by Nicholas Harkness (review)
    • Abstract: In Songs of Seoul: An Ethnography of Voice and Voicing in Christian South Korea, Nicholas Harkness conducts a compelling ethnographic study of the sŏngak (European classical vocal style) singing voice in contemporary Seoul. Harkness examines sŏngak in the context of Korean Christian Presbyterian churches, which he argues are the ritual centers for the acculturation and propagation of the sŏngak voice in Korea. Harkness asserts that the sŏngak style, which prizes the quality of vocal “cleanliness,” acquired power and prestige through alignment with Christian aesthetics and a narrative of spiritual and ethnonational progress.Organized into two parts, “The Qualities of Voice” and “The Sociality of Voice,” the book ... • South Korea’s Education Exodus: The Life and Times of Study Abroad ed.
by Adrienne Lo et al. (review)
    • Abstract: South Korea’s educational system has attracted considerable international attention, but the scholarly literature on it in English is mostly confined to articles written by and for pedagogical specialists. Therefore this multidisciplinary collection of thirteen readable chapters by authors from the fields of anthropology, communications, education, psychology, and sociology is a welcome addition. Rather than focus on the mainstream educational system, the chapters in this volume are concerned with Korean primary- and secondary-age students who go outside the country for education, a phenomenon known as chogi yuhak (early study abroad). While this topic has been widely covered in the South Korean media, 400 articles ... Read More

  • When the Future Disappears: The Modernist Imagination in Late Colonial
           Korea by Janet Poole (review)
    • Abstract: English-language translations and studies of modern or contemporary Korean literature are certainly in the midst of a very welcome and deserved boom. They are winning prizes, from Shin Kyung-sook’s 2012 Man Asian choice, Please Look after Mom (by no means my favorite recent Korean novel in English, but I am so glad Shin beat out Murakami Haruki that year) and Han Kang’s 2016 Man Booker International Prize for The Vegetarian, to Janet Poole’s When the Future Disappears: The Modernist Imagination in Late Colonial Korea, awarded the 2015 MSA Book Prize from the Modernist Studies Association against some very stiff competition from the usual suspects, i.e., scholars of Anglo-American and European literature.1“A ...
