  • Editorial Note
    • Abstract: Drawing on multiple disciplinary trajectories, the eight articles included in the spring 2018 issue of the Journal of Korean Studies explore topics related to education, multiculturalism, neoliberalism, conservation, sexuality, gender, labor, sub-empire, consumption, commuter networks, and domestic space. We look forward to the fall 2018 thematic issue, “Science and Literature in North and South Korea,” guest edited by Dafna Zur (Stanford University) and Chris Hanscom (University of California, Los Angeles). We have now concluded the transition to the journal’s new publisher, Duke University Press. We are grateful to our partners at Duke for working closely with us over the past year to ensure a smooth transfer and ... Read More

  • Selling Smiles: Emotional Labor and Labor-Management Relations in 1930s
           Colonial Korean Department Stores
    • Abstract: Manager Ch’oe does not normally have a generous personality and is usually bad-tempered. Occasionally, manager Ch’oe will say my name, “Paek Inbong,” in front of the customers but if I do something wrong, then there are many times when [Ch’oe] will say “Hey! [J. kora]” or “Fool [J. paga]” and embarrass me. I have endured it up until now, but on the morning of the twenty-third, I was simply adjusting my clothes. [Ch’oe] started scolding me for fidgeting and kept going until I could hardly breathe. I thought it would be better to die than to suffer like this. In order to show the agony felt by the employees, I decided to die.In March 1938, a young female department store employee named Paek Inbong attempted suicide ... Read More

  • The Ondol Problem and the Politics of Forest Conservation in Colonial
           Korea
    • Abstract: Few fixtures of Koreans’ everyday life elicited as much comment from sojourners to turn-of-the-century Korea as the ondol (literally, warm stone), the cooking stove–cum–radiant-heated floor system used in homes across the country. Like the white garments traditionally worn by Koreans, the ondol was routinely highlighted as a distinctive feature of life in the often frigid peninsula, where the Siberian high-pressure system (known colloquially to Koreans as the “knife winds”) can push winter temperatures as much as forty degrees below zero. “In spite of the biting cold,” wrote the Japanese forestry expert Takahashi Kishichirō,within the ondol one feels the warmth of a spring day. Even without a single futon ... Read More

  • Queer(ing) Language in Yi Kwangsu’s Mujŏng: Sexuality, Nation,
           and Colonial Modernity
    • Abstract: In “Ch’unwŏn yŏn’gu” (“A Study of Ch’unwŏn” [Yi Kwangsu’s pen name], 1934–35), Kim Tongin discusses Yi’s career and its relevance to the beginnings of modern Korean literature.1 In a section on Yi’s short story “Ŏrin pŏt ege” (“To My Young Friend,” 1917), which Kim describes as “the first piece of Korean fiction to have been influenced by Western literature,” he writes the following, quoting lines from the story:“Only a brute needs intercourse to be satisfied in a male-female relationship. A civilized, sophisticated gentleman knows the ultimate satisfaction that comes from loving someone mentally, admiring their appearance as well as the elegance of their heart.”How he clamors for his ideal love! • Visualizing and Invisibilizing the Subempire: Labor, Humanitarianism, and
Popular Culture across South Korea and Southeast and South Asia
    • Abstract: This article is an examination of popular cultural representations of five different and yet related aspects of South Korea’s regional globalization: Southeast Asian and other Asian migrant/immigrant/off-shore labor for South Korea and the distinct ways in which some are made visible and others invisible; popular cultural imaginings of a pan-Korean global network; popular cultural production of a pan-Asian imaginary; South Korean humanitarianism and its subimperializing dimensions; and dissemination of popular culture within and outside South Korea—that is, the emergence of popular culture as a significant instrument of imaging South Korea as a subempire. I argue here that South Korean popular culture functions ... Read More

  • Revolution from 360 Feet Below: Form and Ideology in the Pyongyang Metro
    • Abstract: On April 28, 1988, the journalist Uli Brockmeyer departed Moscow for North Korea with a delegation representing the World Federation of Democratic Youth. Immediately upon his arrival, the Pyongyang Metro captivated the journalist more than any other aspect of the North Korean capital. In a report titled “First Impressions,” he likened the experience of traveling on the metro to an “underground sight seeing tour,” remarking that the lighting and mosaic murals in each station produced “the impression of being in the entrance hall of a palace.”1 For Brockmeyer, the grandeur and efficiency of North Korea’s subway called to mind the Moscow Metro, but with one significant difference: the metro stations did not appear on ... • Multiculturalism as “New Enlightenment”: The Myth of Hypergamy and
           Social Integration in Punch
    • Abstract: Although multicultural characters on the Korean screen have increased in number in recent years, as exemplified by Sim Sangguk’s Where Is Ronny' (Roni rŭl ch’ajasŏ, 2008), Sin Tongil’s Bandhobi (Pandubi, 2009), Kim Minsŏk’s Haunters (Ch’onŭngnyŏkcha, 2010), Yuk Sanghyo’s He’s on Duty (Pangga Pangga, 2010), and Kim Sŏnghun’s A Wonderful Moment (Mai lit’ŭl hiŏro, 2012), none of these films has been as commercially successful as Yi Han’s Punch (Wandŭk i, 2011). Adapted from Kim Ryŏryŏng’s coming-of-age novel of the same title, Punch is an unlikely sleeper that surpassed five million admissions within six weeks of its domestic release in October 2011.1 Considering the film’s low-key subject matter, which revolves ... • Melodramatic Tactics for Survival in the Neoliberal Era: Excess and
Justice in The Heirs and My Love from the Star
    • Abstract: In the cultural history of Korea, melodrama is a pervasive mode that not only has appeared across genres and media but has been transforming itself as it migrates to and mixes with other aesthetic conventions. While the appearance of the word melodrama itself can be traced back to the introduction of Western art by Korean intellectuals beginning in the early 1920s, a melodramatic mode, as a popular mechanism for making sense of the unprecedented changes brought by modernity, was by then already operating in the field of cultural production.1 From the serial newspaper novel to sinp’a stage drama (新派劇) and early cinema, the visceral collision of modern and traditional under colonial rule was reenacted with excessive ... • Illegitimate Elites and the Politics of Belonging at a Korean University
    • Abstract: For eighty-four consecutive days in 2016, students of Ewha Womans University flooded the campus and demanded the resignation of President Choi Kyung-hee. Although student protests often happen on Korean university campuses, this one had a perplexing subtext to it. Of the issues leading to the protests, the most salient was that the university president had drawn up plans, without broader campus support, to launch a night college intended for working women who had previously foregone college. The university administration had underscored positive outcomes of a night college, including providing quality education and a second chance for those with lesser educational opportunities. However, many Ewha students ... Read More

  • Park Chung Hee and Modern Korea: The Roots of Militarism 1866–1945 by
           Carter J. Eckert (review)
    • Abstract: Compression of time invested in professional training, the rise of accounting cultures across multiple national academic systems, and perhaps the innate desire of authors to be published quickly, regardless of quality, have combined to birth a social sciences and humanities landscape teeming with increasing numbers of books and articles undermined by malformed prose, superficial empirical research, and votarist incantations of names in lieu of theoretical engagement. Publications in English on Korea’s colonial period ostensibly aimed at specialists have not been exempt from this trend. Too many titles have been more enthusiastic regurgitations and emphatic repetitions of the entirely familiar, less extended tangos ... Read More

  • Project Eagle: The American Christians of North Korea in World War II by
           Robert S. Kim (review)
    • Abstract: Robert S. Kim’s Project Eagle provides several stories that do not quite work as an integrated account of Korean and American partnerships in resisting Japan’s occupation of Korea (1905–45). If the book has a single focus, it is about the relationship of two missionary families, the Weemses and the McCunes, to the leaders of the China-based Korean Provisional Government (KPG). These two families based their religious and educational missions in Pyongyang and Kaesong, both now in North Korea. No such “North” and “South” geographic distinctions existed in Korea until 1945. Kim also ignores other major Protestant missionary families, the Lintons and the Bells, who had important roles in Korea above the Han ... Read More
