  • Urban Aspirations in Seoul: Guest Editors’ Introduction
    • Abstract: The world-historical process of urbanization has resulted in the majority of the world’s population living in urban areas. Theories of urbanization have followed European experience with its emphasis on the urban-rural divide. A further result of this focus on Europe has been the observation that ‘‘one of the most tenacious misunderstandings of cities (. . .) is that they are modern and therefore secular’’ (van der Veer 2015, 7). However, religion has not been replaced by ‘‘secularized communicative reason’’ even in the developed cities of Europe (Reder & Schmidt 2010, 4). In this issue we consider religion as a lens through which we can better examine the ways our urban lifeworld has been and is constituted across ... Read More

  • Engaged Buddhism for the Curative Self among Young Jungto Buddhist
           Practitioners in South Korea
    • Abstract: The importance of religion has gradually faded in social life and religious leadership and norms are no longer influential in the lives of many. The same can be said for the religious system as individuals place less significance on religion and religious practices within their everyday lives (Noriss and Inglehart 2011), and as a result the younger generation in this era is notably less religious than its predecessors (Davie 2000; Voas and Crockett 2005). Still, even as secularization was a growing trend within late modern society, there emerged in the West the boom of Eastern spirituality and Buddhism along with other meditation and monastic practices (Drew 2011; Lynch 2007). In South Korea since the 1990s, we ... Read More

  • Ummah in Seoul: The Creation of Symbolic Spaces in the Islamic Central
           Masjid of Seoul
    • Abstract: As the introduction of Islam to Korea occured relatively recently, Islam is still widely perceived by the Korean general public as a ‘‘foreign religion.’’ The number of South Korean Muslims is still insignificant compared with foreign Muslim residents.1 The history of the Seoul Mosque’s construction reveals the strong influence of Islamic countries, and the architecture of Seoul Mosque incorporates many of these foreign Islamic influences.Over the history of Islam, most mosques have been built by an individual or small group, typically a sultan or a powerful family in the country. The Dome of the Rock, for example, was initially completed at the order of Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik. The Great Mosque of Damascus was ... Read More

  • The Politics of Officially Recognizing Religions and the Expansion of
Urban ‘‘Social Work’’ in Colonial Korea
    • Abstract: Korea today is a highly religious society where Christianity and Buddhism maintain strong followings alongside a broad mixture of traditional belief systems. Discussions of Korean religion often pay special attention to the spread of Christianity in Korea, which far exceeds the rates in neighboring China and Japan. The reasons for the popularity of Christianity are indeed complex and cannot be reduced to any single factor. However, the events that took place during the colonial period can provide important insights into the modern history of Korean religions. In 1915, the Japanese Government General of Korea (GGK) recognized Shintoism, Buddhism, and Christianity as ‘‘official religions’’ (kongin chonggyo 公認宗敎) ... • Punching Korean Protestantism: Challenging from within through a Televised
           Theological Roundtable
    • Abstract: Despite past contributions to the small yet growing field of media and religion, very few studies have examined mediated movements by what I call ‘‘critical insiders,’’ namely, those who are committed to a particular tradition yet highly critical of the way it is believed and practiced in particular contexts. Critical media use by religious communities against outsiders have been well explored in works such as Hirschkind’s fascinating study of Islamic cassette sermons against the secular state in Egypt (2006) or Moors’ study of Muslim women and family law debates in Palestine (2006). But what might religious media look like if they were directed against the tradition that the actors/agents themselves adhere to? In ... Read More

  • The Religious-Political Aspirations of North Korean Migrants and
           Protestant Churches in Seoul
    • Abstract: Seoul is a central contact zone in which diverse popular aspirations are negotiated and demonstrated in envisioning a future that is increasingly diver-sified by global interactions.1 Seoul takes shape more as a process than as a bounded place (Han and Pak 2014). The process is a plural one: it is not merely a process of homemaking or place-making by newcomers, but also of contesting aspirations specific to Seoul that are projected onto and practiced by North Korean refugee-migrants who have recently arrived by way of China and adjacent countries to this capitalist city of divided Korea. I pay particular attention to the role of the evangelical Protestant Church in the process of subjectification of these migrant ... Read More

  • Ham Sŏkhŏn and the Rise of the Dynamistic Philosophy of History
           in Korea
    • Abstract: ‘‘. . . we also glory in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.’’Even though Ham Sŏkhŏn (1901–1989) was not the first philosopher of history in modern Korea, his historical understanding forms the basis of his general outlook.1 He developed one of the most distinctive philosophies of history, emphasizing the role of teleological principle in the social reality of Korea from an historical vantage point. For him, this point of view is essential to understanding the peculiar identity inherent in the Korean people. Ham excavates and offers a unique understanding of history in Korea, where historical consciousness serves as the sin qua ... Read More

  • Korean Popular Beliefs by Yong Bhum Yi et al. (review)
    • Abstract: English readers unfamiliar with Korean folklore scholarship might be confused by the term ‘‘beliefs’’ used in this book, Korean Popular Beliefs, because the authors utilize this term to indicate practices as well as beliefs. However, I would like to remind the readers of the fact that the ‘‘popular beliefs’’ in the title is a translation of the Korean min’gan sinang, which can also be translated as folk religion, and suggest that they first read the last chapter of this work, in which Walraven explains the history and meanings of such terms. Despite the possible confusion caused by the translation, I believe that this book is the most comprehensive text for students of Korean studies and, particularly those ... Read More

  • God Pictures in Korean Contexts: The Ownership and Meaning of Shaman
Paintings by Laurel Kendall, Jongsung Yang, and Yul Soo Yoon (review)
    • Abstract: Shamans of the Hwanghae province tradition bring colorful paintings of the selection of deities they worship in large suitcases to all their major rituals, to be hung on the walls of the space where the ritual is held. The status of these pictures is ambiguous. When they have served their purpose and are put back in the suitcase, they are briskly folded and handled with relative insouciance. Anyone around to help can do it. Nonetheless, in other ways it becomes clear that the paintings have power and need to be treated with circumspection. The god pictures have to be fêted with a ritual from time to time; they have to ‘‘play.’’ When there are too many paintings to actively ‘‘participate’’ in the ritual while ... Read More

  • Chugŭm ŭl nŏmŏsŏ: sun’gyoja Yi Suni ŭi okchung p’yŏnji by
           정병설 Chŏng Pyŏngsŏl (review)
    • Abstract: The few Catholic-authored writings from the ‘‘Great Persecution’’ of 1801 include two letters that offer a rare glimpse into the life and mind of a young Chosŏn woman facing execution for following the ‘‘evil doctrine’’ of Catholicism. In a letter to her mother and a second to two ‘‘sisters,’’ Yi Suni recounts her arrest and imprisonment, expresses concern for family members, and reassures her family that she and her recently executed husband remained faithful to their unusual vows of perpetual virginity. In both letters she voices her anticipation of martyrdom, and how it will bring spiritual glory, reunion with loved ones, and union with God. In their circumstances and content, Yi’s letters are unlike any other ... Read More
