  • Religion and Media: No Longer a Blindspot in Korean Academia
    • Abstract: In contemporary social life, religion and media cannot be said to be separated. Contrary to the long-lasting understanding that the two are independent from each other, the spheres of religion and media are closely intertwined. Dynamic and increasing connections have been observed and reported by a range of scholars. Indeed, the scholarly interest in the relationship is a fairly recent one. Only thirty years ago, religion was just a blindspot within media studies (Hoover and Venturelli 1996). Similarly, media were an overlooked issue in religious studies. However, the new millennium witnessed a fast-growing attention to the interactions in both fields, demonstrated by two simultaneously released pieces of ... • A History of Religious Broadcasting in Korea from a Religious Politics
Standpoint: Focusing on the Period of a Protestant Broadcasting Monopoly
    • Abstract: Although religious broadcasting has played an interesting role in Korea's media history, it has never been the subject of research. The earliest private broadcasting undertaking in Korea was the Christian Broadcasting System (CBS), a Protestant religious broadcast, licensed shortly after the South Korean government was established in 1948. The second private broadcasting company in Korea was the Far East Broadcasting Corporation (FEBC), also a Protestant religious broadcast, which began in 1956. But over the next forty years, broadcasts were not allowed for other religions. Protestant broadcasting monopolized religious broadcasting in Korea until the Catholic P'yŏngwha Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) began ... Read More

  • The Role of Newspapers in the Early Korean Protestant Community: An
Analysis of The Korean Christian Advocate and The Christian News
    • Abstract: On February 2, 1897, an American Methodist missionary, Henry Gerhard Appenzeller (1858–1902), began publishing the first Korean Protestant newspaper, The Korean Christian Advocate (Chosŏn kŭrisŭdoin hoebo), at Ch'ongdong (Chŏngdong) Methodist Church, Seoul, Korea.1 Named after its New York precursor, The Christian Advocate, the newspaper was distinguished from other contemporary publications of Korea in two ways: first, it was written entirely in the vernacular language of Korea, han'gŭl, rather than Classical Chinese, the lingua franca of East Asia at that time. Moreover, it was one of the first newspapers in nineteenth-century Korea. Certainly, Koreans had enjoyed their popular literate culture in diverse ways ... Read More

  • Religion in the Press: The Construction of Religion in the Korean News
           Media
    • Abstract: If one wants to appreciate how religion is mediated in contemporary society, mass media are a salient field for investigation. Mass media produce information about religion, and through them, people with or without religious membership can transcend geographical boundaries to learn about different religious traditions and their activities. Cultural elites whose professions are in the media industry can impact how people understand and even conceptualize religion. Mass media as a whole seem to have come to play a decisive role in revealing, conveying, and reproducing an array of ideas and views about religion in modern times. How, then, do mass media work in modern Korea, particularly in relation to religion' ... • The Culture-Religion Nexus: (Neo-)Durkheimianism and Mediatized
           Confucianism in Korean "Piety Travel"
    • Abstract: The status of Confucianism in Korean society and culture has been a topic that has drawn the attention of scholars of Korean religions due to its status as "moving target," as Boudewijn Walraven famously, and correctly, asserts. The moving target of Confucianism—as opposed to shamanism, Buddhism, and Christianity—is special because of its place in Korean society and culture—not to mention Korean history. It has a uniquely "identifying" power. Indeed, much of present-day Korean national and cultural identity is defined by the supposed historical continuity of Confucian values—namely filial piety and loyalty. This stability, however, is largely false. As Walraven argues, by the latter-half of the Chosŏn period in the ... Read More

  • Authenticity, Brand Culture, and Templestay in the Digital Era: The
Ambivalence and In-Betweenness of Korean Buddhism
    • Abstract: Templestay, the cultural experience program accommodating foreign and domestic visitors to Korean Buddhist temples, is one of the most successful and popular heritage tourism products of contemporary South Korea. It was created through a cooperative effort of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Chogye Order of Korean Buddhism to solve the issue of the lack of accommodation for foreign visitors to the 2002 FIFA Korea and Japan World Cup. Since 2004, the program has annually achieved great success under the management of the Cultural Corps of Korean Buddhism (Han'guk pulgyo munhwa saŏptan). To reach and attract not only domestic visitors but international tourists, the Cultural Corps of Korean Buddhism, a ... Read More

  • Dens of Feudalism: North Korean Discourse on Confucian Academies
    • Abstract: Confucian academies (sŏwŏn 書院) were for centuries part of both the Korean cultural landscape and the intellectual heritage of the Chosŏn dynasty (1392–1910). Many of them survived into modern times and after the division of the Korean peninsula, their destinies continued under two sharply different rival states whose treatment of Confucian academies varied significantly. The regime of the Republic of Korea (South Korea), often appealing to Confucian values, has stressed a positive approach toward the academies' legacy and actively supported their preservation. The fate of academies in the Northern part of the peninsula has been much more complicated. In the Demoratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; North Korea) ... Read More

  • The Debate on the State of Unarousedness between Oeam and Namdang
    • Abstract: As is well-known, the notions of weifa 未發 (K. mibal; the original, unaroused state of the mind) and yifa 已發 (K. ibal; the aroused state of the mind) were first proposed in Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong 中庸).1 "While there are no stirrings of pleasure, anger, sorrow, or joy, the mind may be said to be in the state of equilibrium. When those feelings have been stirred, and they act in their due degree, there ensues what may be called the state of harmony. This equilibrium is the great root from which grow all the human actings in the world, and this harmony is the universal path which they all should pursue" (Legge 1991, 1:384; italics original). Here, "harmony" (he 和) refers to the harmonious state the mind reaches ... Read More

  • A Korean Confucian Way of Life and Thought: The Chasŏngnok (Record of
Self-Reflection) by Yi Hwang (T'oegye) (review)
    • Abstract: In his Eleven Theses on Feuerbach, Karl Marx claims that "the philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it," thus incisively criticizing the abstract, isolated way that philosophy in the West had been practiced away from the true reality of the world. According to Marx's conception, philosophy is to be fundamentally practical beyond theories, both simple and complicated (from the Greek "theorein"). Marx's criticism, however, would be pointless if directed at the Neo-Confucianism of East Asia. For the latter has always been preoccupied with a concrete praxis in the daily context. Neo-Confucianism is, by its very nature, fundamentally practical, regardless of its ... Read More

  • The Spirit Moves West: Korean Missionaries in America by Rebecca Y. Kim
           (review)
    • Abstract: Despite the humble origins of Christianity, mission or evangelism tends to be done by the more powerful and culturally dominant toward those perceived to be weaker and poorer. Few Christians, even in Europe, would have considered sending Christian missions to the USA at the height of the latter's power in the late twentieth century. This book analyzes an exception to this rule: the University Bible Fellowship (UBF), a campus mission founded in South Korea in 1961, and under the leadership of Samuel Lee from 1977 to 2002.The book emphasizes that the UBF was in many respects representative of the dominant Korean conservative evangelical Protestantism of the time, which developed a large overseas missionary movement. ...
