  • The 1,400th Anniversary of Wŏnhyo's Birth: A Special Issue
    • Abstract: The year 2017 marks the 1,400th anniversary of the birth of Wŏnhyo 元曉 ("Break of Dawn"; 617–686), a towering figure in the Korean religious and intellectual firmament. Wŏnhyo was an important vaunt courier in the development of Korean Buddhism and it is no exaggeration to say that it was he who created the Silla tradition of the religion. Indeed, few others have exerted the depth and breadth of influence over the subsequent development of Korean Buddhism as did Wŏnhyo. His oeuvre is among the largest in the entire Korean intellectual tradition, comprising some one hundred works, of which over twenty are extant. His influence extended beyond the Korean Peninsula to both China and Japan, and his writings continue to ... Read More

  • Human Nature and Buddha Nature in Wŏnhyo
    • Abstract: The oldest question in human intellectual history is "What is humankind?" This inquiry is also related to "human nature." "The original nature of humanity," or "human nature," means the "nature (condition) of humanity"; more precisely, the natural disposition or character of humans; or in other words, the character or temperament given to human beings by the totality of nature. In accordance to whether this character is understood as a "fundamental disposition" or merely an "endowed temperament," however, the meaning of the words "original nature" (ponsŏng 本性) can differ. In the case of the former, original nature means "essence," and in the case of the latter, it means "instinct."If original nature as an "essence" ... Read More

  • Towards a Buddhist Ethics of Emptiness: Wŏnhyo on Transgression and
Repentance in the Mahayana Repentance of the Six Senses
    • Abstract: To understand Buddhist ethics, two important points must be addressed. First, that the main goal of Buddhist practice is liberation from suffering (duḥkha) and the cycle of rebirth (samsara) by understanding dharma, a concept with a long history in Indian philosophical and religious discourse and multiple meanings across different schools of thought. A full discussion of the precise meaning of the word is beyond the scope of this essay, but the underlying notion is of a universal law which governs both the physical and moral laws of the universe. Damien Keown suggests that dharma is best translated as "natural law," as this term captures both the sense that it is the principle of order and regularity in the natural ... Read More

  • Wŏnhyo's View of This World
    • Abstract: When we read early Buddhist literature, we often find it fraught with negative depictions of the phenomenal realm. According to the well-known doctrine of three marks (Skt. trilakṣaṇa), all conditioned phenomena in the world—whether they are material or mental objects—have the three characteristics of being impermanent (Skt. anitya), subject to suffering (Skt. duḥkha), and devoid of any perduring substance (Skt. anātman). Thus, it is quite natural that followers of Buddhism tend to regard this world, the "mundane realm" (Skt. loka, sarga, sṛṣṭi, loka-dhātu), as something abhorrent that is to be overcome.Since the mundane realm embraces all the possible worlds wherein sentient beings are physically and mentally ... • The Meaning of the Explicit and Inexplicit Approaches in Wŏnhyo's System
of the Two Hindrances (Ijang ŭi 二障義)
    • Abstract: Wŏnhyo's (617–686) System of the Two Hindrances (K. Ijang ŭi 二障義) is without doubt one of the most magisterial pieces of Buddhist scholarship ever written. Other scholars—even Wŏnhyo himself—may have written more lengthy and detailed commentaries on single works, or provided more detailed authoritative explications of a single system,1 but I cannot think of a single work by any scholar of Buddhism, past or present, which worked out such a thorough comparative/mutually integrating treatment of two such profound and complex soteriological systems—systems that contain enough differences to be identified as distinct from each other, yet at the same time overlap extensively.Virtually all of the great commentators and ... • Kingship as "Dharma-Protector": A Comparative Study of Wŏnhyo and
Huizhao's Views on the Golden Light Sutra
    • Abstract: The Golden Light Sutra (Skt. Suvarṇaprabhāsottamasūtra, Ch. Jinguangming jing, K. Kŭmgwangmyŏng kyŏng 金光明經; hereafter, GLS) is well known in East Asia as a scripture that represents the idea of "state-protection Buddhism" (Ch. huguo Fojiao, K. hoguk Pulgyo 護國佛敎). This sutra claims that when a ruler has faith in it, his state will be protected by Buddhist deities, such as the four heavenly kings (Skt. lokapāla, Ch. si tianwang, K. sa ch'ŏnwang 四天王), from various natural as well as societal difficulties. This idea of state-protection Buddhism was widely accepted by ancient East Asian rulers who adopted Buddhism as state ideology, and in this regard research on state-protection Buddhism has most typically focused on ... • Wŏnhyo: Buddhist Commentator Par Excellence
    • Abstract: Perhaps the greatest scholar ever produced across the full panoply of the Korean religious tradition was the Buddhist exegete Wŏnhyo 元曉 ("Break of Dawn"; 617–686), the 1400th anniversary of whose birth we are commemorating in this special issue of the Journal of Korean Religions. This influential monk was an important vaunt-courier in the Hwaŏm/Huayan 華嚴 school of East Asian Buddhist thought and a key propagator during Buddhism's formative period in Korea during the Unified Silla 新羅 dynasty (668–935). Wŏnhyo's range of scholarly endeavor covered the whole gamut of East Asian Buddhist materials; indeed, the hundred or so works attributed to this prolific writer, over twenty of which are extant, find no rivals among ... • The Re-Invention of Korean Sŏn Buddhism in the Late Chosŏn: Paekp'a
Kŭngsŏn and His Three-Fold Chan Taxonomy
    • Abstract: Korean Sŏn Buddhism in the late Chosŏn was in the process of re-establishing its own identity. The Korean Sŏn masters restored their Sŏn lineage by producing several genealogical texts. Most of these texts connected the Korean Sŏn lineage to the Chinese Linji 臨濟 (K. Imje) lineage by establishing T'aego Pou 太古普愚 (1301–1382), who had traveled to China and received dharma from the Linji master Shiwu Qinggong 石屋淸珙 (1272–1352), as the first patriarch of the Korean Sŏn lineage. However, apart from this genealogical connection to the Linji tradition, Korean Sŏn soteriology of this time took root in the indigenous regimen, which combined the Linji and Heze (K. Hat'aek 荷澤) practices. The regimen incorporated kanhwa Sŏn 看話禪 ... Read More

  • Cardinal Sou-hwan Kim's Spirituality and Confucian Cultural Context: How
           Hybrid is Kim's Confucian-Christian Spirituality?
    • Abstract: The spirituality of Cardinal Sou-hwan Kim (1922–2009) sprang from his Christian faith lived in the historical and cultural context of modern Korea (Pak 2015). Though essentially Christian in its inspiration, vision, praxis, and experience, Kim's spirituality was enriched by the religiously syncretic cultural matrix of Korea that consists of popular religious traditions and major East Asian religious traditions (Baker 2008; Chŏng 1980, 124–170; 1985, 11–61). A Korean Christian's spirituality such as Kim's would be hybrid, but not necessarily syncretistic in the sense of a mere conglomerate composed of diverse and often contradictory beliefs, principles, or practices. One could assimilate and integrate some elements ... Read More

  • Korean Religions in Relation: Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity ed. by
           Anselm K. Min (review)
    • Abstract: This interesting and pioneering collection of essays by Anselm K. Min displays a gamut of strong interest in Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity as found in Korean religious traditions. What is most distinctive about this essay collection is its relational approach. Unlike other books or anthologies in the field, this work considers Korean religions "in their mutual relations" (p. 1), relations chiefly involving "conflict and exclusion, practical accommodation, assimilation and dialogues" (p. 2). Notably, Shamanism, the traditional Korean animism, is not covered in the book (the editor himself regretfully acknowledges omitting it due to limitations of time and space). Also conspicuously lacking is any ... Read More
