Poco o nada sabemos ... • When Flesh Becomes Word: Teresa of Avila's Handwritten Relics
    • Abstract: In the "Sala de Reliquias" of the Discalced Convent of Santa Teresa in Avila there is one cabinet dedicated specifically to Saint Teresa's autograph letters. Amongst the objects displayed are two amulets that her devotees would wear in contact with their body: one is an apotropaic amulet containing only Teresa's signature; the other, meant to be sewn into clothing, contains both her signature and fragments of her autograph letters. In the same way as her bodily relics, which were dispersed after her death, these objects evoke the presence of the saint. There are specific aspects of Teresa's doctrine as well as her written persona that make these letters such a powerful material embodiment of her and her thought. ... Read More

  • Fiometa's Wrathful Suicide in Juan de Flores's Grimalte y Gradisa
    • Abstract: Fiometa's suicide in Juan de Flores's fifteenth-century romance, Grimalte y Gradisa, underscores the dire consequences of allowing unbridled passions to override reason.1 Fiometa's character, as the etymological meaning of her name suggests, embodies the flames of unrestrained passions that separate her from any form of rational behavior and discourse. Fiometa's impulsive fits of rage trigger an ontological alienation that propels her to lose control of her actions, her reactions, and her perception of that which takes place around her. When Fiometa feels that things do not go her way, her natural response, conditioned by her skewed worldview as observed from her oblique prism of an entitled elite, is to revile ... Read More

• "Venha a sátira mordente": A sátira na poesia romântica
           portuguesa
Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More

• Prison Cell and Key: Scrutiny of the Physical Self in Olga Orozco's Museo
salvaje and Gioconda Belli's Sobre la grama
    • Abstract: In 1974, both Argentine poet Olga Orozco and Nicaraguan poet Gioconda Belli published collections that turned their focus to the body, but did so with widely-divergent portrayals of its relationship to the human form, and, in turn, its relationship to a creator. Orozco's collection, Museo salvaje, is an attempt to reach something beyond the limitations of the flesh. The poetic voice laments the confines of the human form, which is largely represented as a barrier that inhibits union with the divine. The inward-looking collection narrates the body's ruptured union from the supreme divine source, and a frustrated inquiry into the body, searching for remnants of this link. By contrast, in Belli's collection of poems ... Read More

  • Equatorial Guinean Migrants in Spain. An Analysis of implicit Discourse
    • Abstract: Rather than making a theoretical point, this paper intends to provide support for an analysis model of implicitness in non-fictional, non-professional discourse. By applying it to self-narrations of life-stories, I hope to demonstrate not only its methodological viability for this type of discourse (almost monological, highly emotional and requiring a special trust with the interviewer) and in this particular case of Equatoguinean emixiles in Spain, but also its efficacy as a tool for Postcolonial Studies which researchers might apply to the discourse of migrants from former colonies who settled after independence in the metropolis. Such may be the case of Indians and Pakistanis in UK, or Algerians in France, who ... Read More

           Adriaensen, Gonzalo Maier (review)
Armas and Antonio Sánchez Jiménez (review)
    • Abstract: In the aptly-titled Doce cuentos ejemplares y otros documentos cervantinos, Frederick A. de Armas and Antonio Sánchez Jiménez bring the reader back to a Cervantine universe enriched by this eclectic collection of stories. The authors included in the volume demonstrate an "incurable pasión cervantina" (7) in their mission to craft a literary tribute to Cervantes, reviving the style, aesthetic and creativity of his original works. The book avoids falling into nostalgic prose and instead embraces a "suspensión cervantina" (7) acknowledged in the introduction. The creators of these pieces expertly manage to navigate different categories of Early Modern Spanish style while infusing the collection with a modern twist of ... Read More

  • Black Writing, Culture, and the State in Latin America ed. by Jerome C.
           Branche (review)
    • Abstract: Each of the twelve rigorously researched chapters in Black Writing, Culture, and the State in Latin America is a reaffirmation of the volume's critical contribution to the fields of Latin American, African, postcolonial, and cultural studies. While Branche and his co-contributors bring much-needed attention to Afro-Hispanic cultural production since the nineteenth century, they also push for an expanded conceptualization of writing that accounts for the realities of the racialized processes of nation-formation throughout the region. Moving beyond more traditional forms of belles-lettres, the thematically and geographically diverse research presented in Black Writing offers a comprehensive and exceptionally ... Read More

  • Alva Ixtlilxochitl's Native Archive and the Circulation of Knowledge in
Colonial Mexico by Amber Brian (review)
    • Abstract: The past thirty or so years have seen a marked increase in the number of academic monographs that seek to break the simple binarisms that even now shape many people's understanding of the Latin American Colonial era. Indeed, categories such as "indigenous," "mestizo," and "creole" are all too often treated as stable, reified entities when a close examination of texts from the period reveals these labels as sites of slippage and negotiation on the parts of all actors involved. An important contribution to this growing body of scholarship, Amber Brian's Alva Ixtlilxochitl's Native Archive and the Circulation of Knowledge in Colonial Mexico takes up the task of exploring creole/mestizo/indigenous relationships in the ...            Rachel Linville (review)
    • Abstract: La memoria de los maquis. • Gender Shrapnel in the Academic Workplace by Ellen Mayock (review)
    • Abstract: Ellen Mayock's most recent book, Gender Shrapnel in the Academic Workplace is an extraordinary example of the ways good cultural "reading" translates into a roadmap for social change. A distinguished feminist scholar working in the fields of Hispanism and Gender Studies, Professor Mayock's professional and scholarly trajectory make her monograph noteworthy for it is the product of the insights of a scholar with academic expertise in the study of literature and the arts who uses that training to analyze the abuse of power in the academic workplace. The strength of this study stems from its interdisciplinarity. Being an acute reader of texts, Mayock offers her skills as an experienced and insightful analyst to study ... Read More

listing of Mercè Rodoreda's works and their translations compiled by
Judith Sánchez Gordaliza by Kathleen McNerney (review)
    • Abstract: This comprehensive and wide-ranging selected and annotated bibliography of Mercè Rodoreda, one the forerunners of Catalan literature written by women, is an excellent sequel to Maria Isidra Mencos's 2002 Mercè Rodoreda: una bibliografia crítica (1963-2001). Kathleen McNerney, a scholar who greatly impacted the dissemination of Mercè Rodoreda's work in the United States, has compiled an exhaustive and detailed bibliography that will serve well, not only Catalan literature scholars, but also a much wider audience interested in other aspects of Rodoreda's artistic and sociohistorical milieu. The bibliography is all-inclusive and it stems from the events associated with the 2008 centennial celebration of Rodoreda's ... Read More

           l'italià by Laura Mongiardo (review)
    • Abstract: In his oft-quoted essay "How to Read a Translation," Lawrence Venuti strongly encourages readers of translated texts to pay particular attention to their introductions, in which the translator sheds light on the strategies and assumptions that have guided his or her complex, and often overlooked, literary activity. The North American critic's interest in foregrounding the translator's voice is reflected in the structure of Laura Mongiardo's book "El mar" i "L'elefant" de Mercè Rodoreda, una proposta de traducció a l'italià. Published by the Fundació Mercè Rodoreda, this slender volume does exactly what Venuti suggests, as it offers detailed insights into the translation process and in doing so prepares the reader ... • Abstract: This new study by Eduardo Olid Guerrero explores the different aspects of disguise in the collection of short stories Novelas ejemplares by Miguel de Cervantes, contributing to the field of Cervantine studies with an innovative approach, providing significant possibilities of interpretation through the analysis of theatrical resources interspersed in Cervantes's narrative, specifically the use of factual and metaphorical disguise and masks, to conceal problematic aspects of Spanish society in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In the introduction, Olid points out that the experience of audiences in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is the exposure to theater representations rather than to literary ... Read More

  • Incomparable Empires: Modernism and the Translation of Spanish and
American Literature by Gayle Rogers (review)
    • Abstract: Rubén Darío's poem "A Roosevelt" (1904) voiced the fears of Latin Americans confronting the threatening giant to the north in the wake of the 1898 Spanish-American War. Writing from Spain, Darío painted a familiar picture: Theodore Roosevelt, former colonel of the Rough Riders who defeated the Spanish army in Cuba and now President of the United States, charging against his southern neighbors, grabbing their territory, and threatening their cultural and linguistic heritage. Against Roosevelt's strength and energy Darío counterpoises the spiritual richness of Spanish America, rooted in the indigenous past and the metropolis's Latin character. This was the fight between naked materialism and fervent mysticism; ... Read More

  • Modernism and the New Spain. Britain, Cosmopolitan Europe and Literary
           History by Gayle Rogers (review)
• The Body as Capital: Masculinities in Contemporary Latin American Fiction
           by Vinodh Venkatesh (review)
    • Abstract: Recent shifts toward austerity and isolationism, the renegotiation of global hierarchies, and ongoing conflicts over territories, markets, and ideologies make the neoliberal era one of material and symbolic uncertainty. In The Body as Capital, Venkatesh interrogates neoliberalism's pervasive (and often pernicious) influence on Latin American cultural production, focusing on literary works that reimagine the gendered dynamics of labor and desire since the 1990s. In particular, Venkatesh theorizes the male body as capitalize-able within a neoliberal episteme that encompasses not just market-based economic policies, but also regimes of sexuality, gender, and aesthetics. Eleven chapters divided into three parts provide ... Read More
