  • Users' Guide: A Word from the Editor
    • Abstract: Tom Nolan may be familiar to readers of the Eudora Welty Review, for he is the biographer of Ross Macdonald/Kenneth Millar, and co-editor with Suzanne Marrs of Meanwhile There Are Letters: The Correspondence of Eudora Welty and Ross Macdonald (Arcade 2015). Beginning in 1990, in preparation for Ross Macdonald: A Biography (Scribner 1999), Nolan visited Jackson, Mississippi, to meet and interview Eudora Welty. From their conversations, Nolan published two pieces in Oxford American: A Magazine of the South illustrating that Welty was charming and witty, as was especially true when she spoke of someone other than herself. I am pleased that EWR can publish the interviews, pinned together as Welty might have done ... Read More

  • 1990: I Call on Eudora Welty An Interview
    • Abstract: As soon as we were in the car, she was telling me a story: something shocking and comical about a woman who'd walked off and left her baby in an elevator in a building downtown.1"Said—this was in the newspaper—it was so hot she'd forgotten she even had the child with her"—a regional anecdote to break the ice and comment on the weather for a pilgrim from a distant state. But while she talked and drove, she watched me, peering through her curtain of words for signs of intelligent life in this visitor.Things may not have looked promising. I was jet-lagged, culture-shocked, and struck dumber than usual by being in the presence of maybe the most revered writer in America as she piloted us through the streets of Jackson ... Read More

  • Preface to The Optimist's Daughter, Bibliothèque du Temps
           Présent, Editions Rombaldi, 1977
    • Abstract: The Optimist's Daughter, for which Eudora Welty received the Pulitzer Prize—the highest American literary distinction—in 1973, reads like a short story. It is, however, a great novel, which features a unique combination of conciseness, subtlety, and implicitness. If critics praised the author's qualities in the writing, the psychology, and the composition of the plot, they also admired the fine density of the story's meditation on life and death, its focus on intergenerational conflict, on the crisis of civilization, and, more broadly, its exploration of the mystery of fate and of human relations. In the novel, conveyed with a profound subtlety and reading like a poem, symbols and mythological references weave ... • Sister Act: Margaret Walker and Eudora Welty
    • Abstract: In a journal entry dated Tuesday, November 11, 1980, Margaret Walker wrote that Eudora Welty "and I did our act together for Mrs. Early's class" at Southern Methodist University (Journal 107, 314).1 Suzanne Marrs, author of Eudora Welty: A Biography, also recalls hearing Welty "say 'sister act' several times" in reference to her presence on the same panels as Walker ("Re: Clarification"). This "sister act" came at the end of their lives, in the 1980s and '90s, when both were recognized several times by their hometown of Jackson and the state of Mississippi for their long careers and bodies of work. The paths they traveled to reach this intersection of common recognition were quite different, however. Almost exact ... Read More

  • Welty on the Interstate: Mobility and Mass Culture on I-55 and the Natchez
           Trace
    • Abstract: Through travel I first became aware of the outside world; it was through travel that I found my own introspective way into becoming a part of it.This is the story of two roads, the Natchez Trace and I-55, and the separate ways in which these roads foster mobility in and into the South. Their point of convergence is Jackson, Mississippi, the lifelong home of Eudora Welty. The Trace only crosses two interstates, I-55 and I-20, over its entire length, both just outside Jackson, making the southern capital the locus of the old and the new, the haunted Trace and the modern city.1 My aim here is to deconstruct these roads, to peel back the asphalt and discover what regional and national ideals and assumptions built them. ... • Abstract: Critical attention to "No Place for You, My Love" has traditionally focused on the issue of the emotional connection, or lack thereof, between the story's two main characters. In her 2013 essay "Ordinary Genius in Eudora Welty's 'No Place for You, My Love,'" Carey Wall offers a useful overview of critics who have weighed in on the issue: Noel Polk, Michael Kreyling, Gail Mortimer, Ruth Weston, and Stephen Fuller find little or no connection, or at best, a flawed connection between the two, while Suzanne Marrs and Peggy Whitman Prenshaw find that the characters are able to "fulfill a positive relationship" (Wall 239). Marrs has also characterized "No Place for You, My Love" as a story about the "oppressive nature of ... Read More

  • "Something Inarticulate": Sexual Desire in the Fiction of Eudora Welty and
           Hubert Creekmore
    • Abstract: Scholars working on the queer South have recognized the work of Hubert Creekmore's underground classic The Welcome as a staple of this canon.1 Eudora Welty occasionally pops up in the queer studies canon as a contemporary to the mid-century southern writer or as seen on the arm of Creekmore when they attended Jackson Symphony Orchestra concerts together (Richards 6; Howard 192). But so far little has been said about the significance of these personal and literary connections, especially Welty and Creekmore's shared explorations of modern sexuality in the American South. This essay places Welty and Creekmore side by side as writers who shared not only family connections and a social circle of friends, but also an ... • Eudora Welty's Fiction and Photography: The Body of the Other Woman by
           Harriet Pollack (review)
    • Abstract: The critical taproot of Eudora Welty's Fiction and Photography stretches deeply into Harriet Pollack's past, a fact made evident in the book's Acknowledgements and Preface, which together portray the genesis of the ideas and interests that inform this intricate and meticulous assessment of Welty's work. The heavy theoretical lifting, though, she saves for the Introduction, which asserts a clutch of philosophical and critical influences—Mary Douglas, Michel Foucault, Sandra Lee Bartky, Susan Bordo, Judith Butler, Mary Russo, and Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, to give just some of the names produced—that scaffold Pollack's central observation: the body of the other woman in Welty's fiction and photography ... • Keywords for Southern Studies ed. by Scott Romine and Jennifer Rae Greeson
           (review)
    • Abstract: Keywords for Southern Studies, as of this review, the eighteenth volume in The New Southern Studies series published by the University of Georgia Press, begins with Houston Baker's essay "Incarceration" and ends with Jon Smith's "Trauma." Except for Scott Romine, whose essay on "Consumption" has some fun with the peregrinations of grits on US restaurant menus, there is not much relief from a uniformly deliberate and professional tone. Keywords for Southern Studies plants the impression that, whatever the Old Southern Studies was, the New Southern Studies (NSS) is serious professional business, part of the variously named new world studies or global south studies or world-systems studies, a definite break with the ... • The Oxford Handbook of the Literature of the U. S. South ed. by Fred
           Hobson and Barbara Ladd (review)
    • Abstract: Over the last two years, southern studies has experienced a dizzying array of edited collections, special issues, and solicited features that seek to define, challenge, and change the field. From Keywords for Southern Studies (U of Georgia P, 2016) to PMLA's 2016 feature on "The Changing Profession," which included manifestos on the future of southern literary studies, and from Sharon Holland's relaunch of the Southern Literary Journal into the interdisciplinary south to the Mississippi Quarterly issue featuring position papers from the Society for the Study of Southern Literature's newly formed Emerging Scholars Organization, southern literary and cultural studies has undergone serious self-interrogation. These ... Read More

  • Serious Daring: The Fiction and Photography of Eudora Welty and Rosamond
Purcell by Susan Letzler Cole (review)
    • Abstract: Serious Daring takes on the difficult task of examining with critical clarity the mystery—a recurring word throughout the text—of humanity represented through art. While Susan Letzler Cole makes clear that her goal is juxtaposition, when this juxtaposition moves to commentary, Cole's claims are often difficult to parse out because of a lack of development. Cole knows who to cite, and cites often, but she rarely builds on the existing body of scholarship on Welty in meaningful ways. Perhaps this lack of clarity stems from Cole's deep appreciation of Welty's and Purcell's talents, but this appreciation also obfuscates her claims. While Cole's claims are interesting, they are either one of two options: 1) so specific ... Read More

  • Eudora Welty House and Garden
    • Abstract: April of 2016 marked the tenth anniversary of the public opening of the Eudora Welty House, renamed the Eudora Welty House and Garden (EWHG) in 2013. We celebrated this milestone with a week of special events. We launched it with the inauguration of Second Saturday open hours and a talk by long-time Welty friend Patti Carr Black. Black discussed the curation of her 1995 exhibit, "Other Places," which highlights twenty of Welty's 1930s photographs of New Orleans and New York City, Welty's two other beloved cities outside of Jackson. This exhibit was on display in the Education and Visitors Center during 2016. Maggie Stevenson took the lead in orchestrating our second "pop-up" art exhibit, which presented ... Read More

  • The Eudora Welty Collection Mississippi Department of Archives and History
    • Abstract: The materials transferred to the Archives and Records Services Division (A&RS) from the Museum Division since March 2011, along with those transferred to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) upon the settlement of Eudora Welty's estate, continue to be incorporated into the Eudora Welty Collection. In accordance with archival rules of provenance, three newly acquired collections of Welty-related material were not added to the Eudora Welty Collection proper (Z/0301.000/S) because they were not donated by Eudora Welty or her heirs directly. They were processed instead as Z/2294.000/S, Robinson (John Fraiser) Papers; Z/2330.000/S, Welty-Millar Letters; and Z/2345.000/S, Welty (Eudora) Letter to ... Read More

  • Eudora Welty Research Fellowship Report
    • Abstract: As the 2016 recipient of the Eudora Welty Research Fellowship, I conducted research at the William F. Winter Archives and History Building from July 14 to July 28, 2016. During my stay in Jackson, Mississippi, I was given opportunities to access the Eudora Welty Collection housed at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History; to visit the Eudora Welty House and Garden; and to meet people connected to Eudora Welty, such as her close friend and renowned Welty scholar Suzanne Marrs. The following is a brief summary of my original objectives and my findings. My project aims to join in the relatively recent scholarly conversation on Welty as photographer and the relationship between her photographs and her ...
