  • 'Terrible queer creatures at the latter end of the world': Joyce's A
           Portrait and the Global Bildungsroman
    • Abstract: 'O, the green wothe botheth'In chapter II of Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen Dedalus contemplates the power of language to offer up a world:Words which he did not understand he said over and over to himself till he had learned them by heart: and through them he had glimpses of the real world about him. The hour when he too would take part in the life of that world seemed drawing near and in secret he began to make ready for the great part which he felt awaited him the nature of which he only dimly apprehended(P II.83–9).The words Stephen does not understand come from his 'elders', who speak 'of the subjects nearer their hearts, of Irish politics, of Munster and of the legends of their own ... • A Portrait Amidst its Peers: Joyce and Catholic-Intelligentsia Fiction
    • Abstract: I and Ireland recognize that we part for each other's good. She clearly sees that she has not passion enough to hold an artist, and an alliance in such circumstances would be dull and immoral. To readers of James Joyce these words may seem strikingly reminiscent of parts of Chapter V of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916).2 In the concluding chapter of the novel Stephen Dedalus is alternately arrogant in his arguments with his fellow students and vulnerable and uncertain as he contemplates setting out for exile from Ireland on his self-proclaimed mission 'to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race' (P V.2789–90). But the quotation is from a different book, The Plough and the ... Read More

  • The Future of Joyce's A Portrait: The Künstlerroman and Hope
    • Abstract: Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man generates a number of questions about the future, as any good Bildungsroman and Künstlerroman should do. These genres, which depict, respectively, the way in which a young hero is educated, matures, and assimilates into his or her society, and the way in which a nascent artist is formed, cause readers to wonder about the fate of the budding aspirant in whom they have become invested. Among the many other coordinates that the novel interests readers in tracking is whether Stephen will fail or succeed as an artist. Can or will he mature into the kind of artist capable of writing a book like A Portrait' Can or will he forge an art capable of affecting the Irish 'racial' ... Read More

  • Writing the Voice in A Portrait and Ulysses
    • Abstract: What does it mean to talk about 'voice' in narrative, and particularly in Joyce' What does it mean for characters to 'speak' in fiction' How are these speech acts recorded' Joyce's texts are arguably all about 'voice', from the 'voices [that] had now come to be hollowsounding' (P II.844–5) in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man to the objects and animals that speak in Ulysses to the disembodied voices of Finnegans Wake. The transition from A Portrait to Ulysses to Finnegans Wake is marked by an increasingly complex proliferation of voices. This article explores this formal and thematic progression by showing how Joyce textually inscribes 'voice' on the page in A Portrait and Ulysses.Literature is an act of ... Read More

  • 'Mangan's Sister' in 'Araby': What's in a Name'
    • Abstract: 'Araby' can be read in a number of ways. The reading offered in this article centres on James Clarence Mangan, examining the text in relation to the life and writings of the poet as well as to the two lectures Joyce devoted to him. As these were given in 1902 and 1907, they flank on both sides the story which was completed in 1905.Why did Joyce call the girl with whom the boy is infatuated 'Mangan's sister'' If we turn from the fiction of 'Araby' to the poet Mangan in real life, there appears to have been someone to whom we can refer as Mangan's sister without quotation marks. But this person is strangely elusive. Mangan himself mentions her several times in his 'Autobiography' as one of those for whose support he ... Read More

  • 'The More Subtle Inquisitor:' Arthur Machen as Early Reviewer of Dubliners
           for Grant Richards
    • Abstract: The torturous publication history of Dubliners is now well known to Joyce scholars, having received its most extensive and nuanced explication by Clare Hutton. In her masterful account of the collection's vexed transit from Heinemann through to Grant Richards, Maunsel & Co., and then back to Richards again, she challenges the critical mythology which positions Richards in 1906 as a cowardly, irascible or careless publisher beholden to the squeamish moral sensitivities of his printer.1 The new, more complex picture she paints of the early reception of Dubliners at Grant Richards and Maunsel and Co. points instead to the role of multiple actors and material factors in shaping the fate of the work. A letter in the ... Read More

  • The Coming-of-Age-Novel After Joyce: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young
Man, 1916–2016: Readings and Talks by Belinda McKeon, Paul Murray and
           Éilís Ní Dhuibhne
    • Abstract: James Joyce was delighted with the coincidence that the first instalment A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man had first appeared in The Egoist on his birthday, 2 February 1914. He was later doggedly determined to have Ulysses published on his fortieth birthday, 2 February 1922. The plethora of twos was no doubt pleasing to the mind that chose the nature of twoness as a key motif in Finnegans Wake. The feast of Candlemas, at the start of the Celtic Spring, 2 February is also Groundhog Day which has a comical modern-day association for anyone who has felt stuck in the same repeating day when studying Ulysses. This year the UCD James Joyce Research Centre in partnership with the James Joyce Centre hosted a rich ... • Centenary Readings of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Conference,
           5–6 May 2016
    • Abstract: There are few places finer to participate in one's first Joyce conference, or indeed better equipped to host a centenary reappraisal of A Portrait of the Artist as Young Man, than the James Joyce Centre. Located at the very epicentre of the city forever immortalized by the author's magnum opus, its neighbouring shopfronts offer a poignant snapshot of the ever-increasing impact made by the global upon local. Stretching either side of the Parnell monument, the amalgamation of Oriental food stores, multi-million dollar fast food chains and overseas supermarket conglomerates provide a stirring contrast to the elegant Georgian architecture that to this day still dignifies the hill of North Great George's Street. Once ... Read More

  • The Dublin James Joyce Summer School, 3–9 July 2016
    • Abstract: The Dublin James Joyce Summer School of 2016 convened between from 3–9 July, perfect summer days in my country, but it felt like Autumn in Dublin, and it was comparably hot as the locals reported. I immediately thought how warmly Dublin greeted me and this was proved as soon as I met Professor Anne Fogarty, Dr Luca Crispi, Dr Fritz Senn, and the other Joyceans. It was a hands-on living and breathing dream for a Joycean. The school, as usual, offered a rich academic and social programme for Joyceans from all around the world regardless of their seniority and the immensity of the knowledge they have about Joyce. Basically, the participants had lectures in the morning and a seminar on their chosen Joyce text in the ... Read More
