  • ‘Greedo!’: Joyce, John MacHale, and the First Vatican Council from
           ‘Grace’ to Finnegans Wake
    • Abstract: ‘That was the greatest scene in the whole history of the Church’ (D, ‘Grace’ 627–8), or so Martin Cunningham tells his acquaintances as they crowd around the bed of Tom Kernan, a fallen man in many senses of the word. The events of the great Council at the Vatican in 1869–70 are recounted briefly but poignantly in the penultimate story of the Dubliners collection, and, moreover, this narrative can be seen as a model for the action of ‘Grace’. The short story as a whole allows, or even invites, the reader to identify the small council of men in a commonplace Dublin home with the grand gathering of the Catholic hierarchy that led to the solemn declaration of the dogma of papal infallibility — a belief that already ... • Time and Space: The Opposition of Professor Jones in Finnegans Wake I.6
    • Abstract: In Book I, chapter 6 of Finnegans Wake, Shem asks his brother Shaun twelve questions. The eleventh of those questions is: ‘if you met on the binge a poor acheseyeld from Ailing,’ and ‘if the fain shiner pegged you to shave his immartial, wee skillmustered shoul […] would you?’ (FW 148.33, 149.07–8, 149.10). In inquiring whether Shaun would save the soul of a poor, ailing exile, Shem refers both to himself and to the poor, ailing exile who created him. Shaun’s response is very direct: ‘No’ (FW 149.11). Yet, instead of explaining the reasoning behind his refusal, Shaun proceeds to offer an extensive lecture on the relationship between time and space. In doing so, he adopts the character of Professor Jones who is a ... Read More

  • From Notes to Text: The Role of the Notebooks in the Composition of
           Finnegans Wake
    • Abstract: Understanding of the nature of Joyce’s Finnegans Wake notebooks is now well advanced, and much empirical research has been done on their content, though of course more is needed. What remains problematical still is their exact function in the work itself, and also the extent of that function and its importance. Before addressing these issues, which form the substance of the present essay, it might be useful to briefly summarize the history and current state of notebook studies.1Joyce’s notebooks for Finnegans Wake form perhaps the most complete and comprehensive set of background material that we possess for any literary work. The notebooks were kept and used by Joyce throughout the writing of ‘Work in ... Read More

  • From Tristan to Finnegan: A Re-Telling
    • Abstract: In October 1922, Joyce was resting in the South of France from the exertions of writing and publicizing Ulysses, but he could not quite let go of the book.1 He was reading it again and preparing a list of errata for the next edition. By the end of the month, he had only reached the ‘Cyclops’ episode, and on the first extant page of Buffalo notebook VI.B.10, he made a few corrections, then stopped suddenly, and wrote the following gloss: ‘Polyphemous is Ul’s [Ulysses’] shadow’.2Joyce does not take up the erratum on this page or in this notebook, and we can consider that his work on Ulysses stops there, on the idea of a dark side, a nocturnal dimension of the divine Ulysses. And the work on Finnegans Wake somehow ... Read More

  • Textual Enactment: The Cognitive ‘riverrun’ and the ‘Fluid Text’
           of Joyce’s ‘Anna Livia Plurabelle’
    • Abstract: This is probably the reaction of someone who is not a fan of Finnegans Wake.1 What an idea. To think that a text will start ‘flowing’ when you fill it with enough river names. And yet, that is what numerous readers of Joyce’s Anna Livia Plurabelle have been willing to accept.2 In this respect, readings of Book I, chapter eight of Finnegans Wake are a remarkable case of what Coleridge called the ‘willing suspension of disbelief.’ The reception of Finnegans Wake to a large extent hinges upon this willingness or unwillingness. Even before the publication of the book, when it was still called ‘Work in Progress’, the early defenders drew attention to the text’s enactive or performative qualities. Samuel Beckett, for ... • Announcing: An Emended Finnegans Wake with Full Explanatory Apparatus: A
           Sample of Pages 3–9
    • Abstract: ‘Every letter is a hard but yours sure is the hardest crux ever’ (FW 623.33–4).2014 saw the seventy-fifth anniversary of the first edition of Finnegans Wake. 2019 will see the eightieth anniversary and it will also see, we hope, the publication of a new edition with an emended text and an apparatus which will explain our emendations, and clarify many of the issues around unresolved textual cruxes. The edition will be published by Oxford University Press in two large hardback volumes — one with the emended text, the other with the ‘apparatus’. There will also be an online version. It will keep to the number of pages (628) and the number of lines per page (36) in the first edition in order to coincide for 99.5% of ... Read More

  • ‘Why, Mr J. and his God alone know!’: Joyce and Lewis Carroll
    • Abstract: In a letter to Harriet Shaw Weaver while he was on holiday in The Hague on 31 May 1927, Joyce claimed that he had only recently read anything by Lewis Carroll, but as I will show his notebooks and drafts reveal a different story. The letter reads:Dr Henry Seidl Canby (?) in a long review for the American equivalent of the Speaker (??) begins: Ulysses was a night book but this seems to be a day book with the rivers of Ireland for chief characters. A writer in a review of it in Laurens County, Georgia, says: We and the Oconee river of all places in the world are in it too. Why, Mr J. and his God alone know! Another writer: ‘He has determined to write as a lunatic for lunatics’. A young man called on me before I left ... Read More

  • Joyce’s use of Lists
    • Abstract: When Joyce sent Carlo Linati a schema for Ulysses on 21 September 1920 he designated Ulysses ‘as a sort of encyclopaedia’ (Letters I 146). To others he described his working methods as those of both an ‘engineer’ and a ‘scissors and paste man’ (Letters I 297).1 The deployment of lists is a technique common to epics such as Homer’s Odyssey, Beowulf, and Tάin Bó Cuailnge. This essay considers why and how Joyce sourced and compiled a catalogue of names from lists and how he used them as a literary device and in some cases as democratic levellers. The lists provided detail and controlled the facts. The sourcing of names from Thom’s Directory shows how deeply Ulysses is rooted in Dublin reality.Hundreds of names appear ... Read More

  • ‘Living Texture:’ A Review of the Dublin James Joyce Summer
           School, 6–11 July 2015
    • Abstract: Claire Culleton, in her lecture at the 2015 Dublin James Joyce Summer School, observed that Joyceans find themselves in a ‘decade of centenaries’, where we are marking anniversaries of Joyce’s compositions and publications, as well as major moments in Irish and European literary and political history. Given our position as celebrants of these centenaries, what better time then for Joycean scholars to immerse themselves in foundational interpretive histories while also revisiting and challenging critical commonplaces and assumptions. Just as the streetlamps illuminate ‘the living texture’ of summertime Dublin (and the perambulators Corley and Lenehan) in ‘Two Gallants’, so too does the annual meeting of the Summer ... Read More
