  • Introduction to “Frontier Tibet: Trade and Boundaries of Authority
           in Kham”
    • Abstract: This special issue of Cross-Currents focuses on the region of the Sino-Tibetan borderlands that Tibetans call Kham: a historical frontier where several spheres of authority have competed, expanded or retracted, and sometimes overlapped. It has long constituted a buffer zone between the larger political entities of Central Tibet and China proper, and is an area that crosses cultural, ecological, and political boundaries.Kham is one of three traditional divisions of the geographical space that makes up what is often called “cultural Tibet” or “ethnographic Tibet,” together with the central region of Ü-Tsang and the northeastern region of Amdo (see map 1). What makes the history of eastern Tibet special, as Wim van ... Read More

  • “To Control Tibet, First Pacify Kham”: Trade Routes and “Official
           Routes” (Guandao) in Easternmost Kham
    • Abstract: We know that the rise and interplay of trade and accompanying trading routes have been a driving force in history. In the eighteenth century, Adam Smith highlighted the disparate distribution of resources and trading propensities and stated the commonplace that we trade for what we want in order to get what we do not have. We must also acknowledge the value of exchange and of the entire trading enterprise, with the concomitant economic, social, and strategic factors that result from trading relationships. In addressing the long history of trade and contact in the Sino-Tibetan border regions, this article looks at the importance of trade in the context of how and why known and documented routes came into being, and ... • Construction Work and Wages at the Dergé Printing House in the
           Eighteenth Century
    • Abstract: The history of economic facts, particularly as far as quantitative aspects are concerned, remains an underinvestigated field of research with regard to pre-twentieth-century Tibet. Multiple factors have contributed to this situation: the small number of documents, limited access to them, and the fact that any relevant figures are scattered here and there and are, above all, difficult to interpret. However, the few existing studies concerning Central Tibet (Surkhang 1966; Chapela 1992; Dungkar 1997; Tsarong 1998a and 1998b; Cüppers 2010) show that these data may in fact provide clues as to how to understand social facts in the pre-twentieth-century Tibetan context and how to carry out a more detailed analysis of ... • Guozhuang Trading Houses and Tibetan Middlemen in Dartsedo, the
           “Shanghai of Tibet”
    • Abstract: In the late seventeenth century, the Sino-Tibetan frontier town of Dartsedo (Ch. Ta-chien-lu or Kangding)—the “Shanghai of Tibet”1—became a major center for Sino-Tibetan commerce, where Han Chinese, Tibetan, and Hui (Chinese Muslim) traders gathered to engage in vibrant trade. A unique setup emerged, known in Tibetan as kortso (literally meaning “circle” and denoting a tribe or assembly) (Ch. guozhuang).2 Kortso was originally a political institution established by the Chakla “king” (Ch. Mingzheng tusi), the indigenous ruler of the region (Qian Zhongkang 2012).3 Initially, the main functions of most aristocratic families in charge of guozhuang under the king were to draft official documents and to receive Chinese ... • Victorianizing Guangxu: Arresting Flows, Minting Coins, and Exerting
           Authority in Early Twentieth-Century Kham
    • Abstract: On December 24, 1904, after an arduous fourteen-week journey along the southern road linking Chengdu with Lhasa, recently appointed assistant amban (Imperial Resident) to Tibet Fengquan reached Batang, a lush green valley at the western edge of Sichuan on the province’s border with central Tibet. A fearless and diligent official, Fengquan had a successful history of suppressing bandits. Most recently serving as commissioner of Chengdu’s new police force, he was accustomed to bending the will of both his own men and his opponents, and was described by fellow officials as occasionally displaying an arrogant streak (“Duxian zou” 1905; NA, “Thibetan Affairs”: FO 228/1549). • Tricks of the Trade: Debt and Imposed Sovereignty in Southernmost Kham in
           the Nineteenth to Twentieth Centuries
    • Abstract: The area that lies at the juncture of present-day northwest Yunnan, eastern Sichuan, and southeastern Tibetan Autonomous Region poses particular challenges: we have only a fragmentary knowledge of its history, and its complexity defies the demarcations typical of our modern understanding of religion, politics, territory, and ethnic categories. Much remains to be done to gain better understanding of the history of interactions between Tibetans, Chinese, and other Tibeto-Burman–speaking groups such as the Naxi (Moso), Nung (Nu), Lisu, and Drung (Dulong), and the unique regional culture they have produced (see map 1).1 This article is an attempt to write a regionally grounded ethnohistory of this portion of the ... • Memory Politics at Work in a Gyalrong Revolt in the Early Twentieth
           Century
    • Abstract: Led by Tsatö Zöpa (hereafter Zöpa), a low-ranking monk from a local monastery, a revolt broke out in 1917 in Bajiao,1 Maogong County, in the Gyalrong region2 of Sichuan’s Sino-Tibetan borderlands (see map 1). This uprising attracted over four thousand participants and led to the seizure of several neighboring counties and magistratures (C. tun, lit. “troops station,” a military-civil administrative unit of the Qing) within a few months. Arguably, this short-lived rebellion was the largest of its kind in Gyalrong against the Manchu/Chinese state since the two Jinchuan campaigns (1747–1749, 1771–1776), the costliest wars against rebellious chieftains in Qing history. These campaigns were part of the Qing’s grand ... Read More

  • Afterword: Why Kham? Why Borderlands? Coordinating New Research
           Programs for Asia
    • Abstract: This special issue of Cross-Currents is dedicated to Kham, or Eastern Tibet, which, according to the European Research Council grant supporting these articles, can be called a “Sino-Tibetan Borderlands.”1 But why should East Asianists, including readers of this journal, care about Kham, and does it in any way help us to conceive of the region as a “borderlands”? The first question was on my mind in May 2015 as I participated in the first of two workshops devoted to Kham; the second was raised by rightfully skeptical participants—most of them experts on Kham—at the February 2016 conference in Paris that concluded this project. The two questions are related, I believe, and this afterword suggests that one possible ... Read More

  • Introduction to “Mapping Vietnameseness”
    • Abstract: Vietnam and China are currently engaged in a map war, with each country using ancient maps to buttress its claims to territorial sovereignty over some uninhabited islands in the South China Sea (in Chinese terminology), also known as the Eastern Sea (in Vietnamese). But what do maps in fact represent? What is meant by “territory”? How are territorial limits conceived? These questions were raised in a May 2015 workshop inspired by Thongchai Winichakul’s Siam Mapped: A History of the Geo-Body of a Nation (1994), a groundbreaking book that traces the transformation of Thai geographical consciousness as a result of Siam’s encounter with Western powers in the nineteenth century. While many of Thongchai’s insights apply ... Read More

  • From a Reliant Land to a Kingdom in Asia: Premodern Geographic Knowledge
and the Emergence of the Geo-Body in Late Imperial Vietnam
    • Abstract: In the current age, the five continents are in contact and the six types of peoples intermingle. Competition is ever fiercer and changes are ever more numerous. Regardless, if one is a scholar, a farmer, an artisan, or a merchant, one cannot hide in one’s village. This is why it is essential to lecture on the study of geography. In 1908, Vietnamese scholar Lương Trúc Đàm was alarmed. As a member of a new generation of reformist intellectuals, he had started to learn about the world in new ways—as a Social Darwinist competition between societies, among others1—and what he saw disturbed him. The fact that by 1908 his land, which he called the Southern Kingdom (Nam Quốc), had fallen under French colonial rule was a ... Read More

  • Contested Sovereignty: Local Politics and State Power in Territorial
Conflicts on the Vietnam-China Border, 1650s–1880s
    • Abstract: In the fifth month of 1806, two tribal chieftains (thổ ty), Đèo Chính Ngọc and Đèo Quốc Uy, sent a memorial to the Vietnamese throne. These leaders—the magistrates, respectively, of Lai Mountain County (Lai châu) and Văn Bàn Mountain County (Văn Bàn châu) in Hưng Hoá Commandery (Hưng Hoá trấn), which is now part of Lào Cai and Lai Châu Provinces—explained to the emperor that, long ago, mountain settlements (động) in their own counties—and in Tung Lăng, Hoàng Nham, Tuy Phụ, and Hợp Phì Mountain Counties—had broken up, and that many of the inhabitants of those settlements had fled into Qing territory. The two chieftains suggested to Emperor Gia Long (r. 1802–1820), who had founded the Nguyễn dynasty only four years ... Read More

  • Vietnam at the Khmer Frontier: Boundary Politics, 1802–1847
    • Abstract: For the early Nguyễn emperor Gia Long (r. 1802–1820), who emerged victorious from three decades of war following two centuries of division, and his heir, Minh Mệnh (r. 1820–1841), several urgent priorities were to unify Vietnam, extend the reach of the state, and secure the country’s borders, which entailed gaining control over both land and people. Debates at court about how to achieve these goals were couched in the rhetoric of a civilizing mission, on the one hand, and in calls to protect the empire’s borders, on the other. This article examines the dynamic relationship between these two modes of thought—one focused on people and the other on land—with particular reference to Minh Mệnh’s abortive expansion into ...
