  • Introduction
    • Abstract: The historical depth of cartographic ideas and practices in East Asia is unusual in world history and deserves more interdisciplinary scholarly attention than it has received. There are many questions that have not been explored enough: What is the range of materials identifiable as maps in East Asia' What kinds of messages have they conveyed' What are the techniques and circumstances that have shaped them, and how have they intersected with other textual and visual media' What are their cultural contexts in material, political, and social terms' What historical insights emerge when we analyze East Asian maps today' Answering these questions requires a capacious conception of cartography capable of crossing ... • The Local in the Imperial Vision: Landscape, Topography, and Geography in
Southern Song Map Guides and Gazetteers
    • Abstract: Map guides (tujing 圖經, literally "map and treatise") and gazetteers (difang zhi 地方志, literally "record of a local region") were the two dominant genres of geographical writing in the Song dynasty (960–1279). The meaning of these two terms may seem self-evident, as it is generally accepted that a map guide refers to an administrative text comprising maps and treatises on a given jurisdiction, whereas a gazetteer, although accompanied by maps in some cases, primarily contains written records of a local region produced by local elites. To date, Song dynasty historians James Hargett and Peter Bol have provided the most insightful research on this topic in the contexts of the Tang-Song transition and the rise of a local ... Read More

  • Sankei Mandara: Layered Maps to Sacred Places
    • Abstract: Maps encode the attitudes of the mapmakers toward the area they are mapping and the world views of the societies in which they live. In the words of classicist Christian Jacob, "Maps construct their own worlds through the filtering, translation, and hierarchical and taxonomical organizations of data" (Jacob 1996, 192). The maps of a water agency would thus include the area's rivers, streams, ponds, and springs, whereas a military map would underline fortifications, airfields, arms depots, passes, and the like. In a political map, borders might be redrawn with contentious areas included and names of towns changed according to a larger geopolitical discourse. A map made by monastics might give expression to the ... Read More

  • Mapping the Forgotten Colony: The Ogasawara Islands and the Tokugawa Pivot
           to the Pacific
    • Abstract: On January 18, 1862,1 the Japanese steamboat Kanrin-maru 咸臨丸, weighed down by cannons, entered the harbor of Port Lloyd in the Ogasawara Islands some 1,000 kilometers south of Honshu (figure 1). Magistrate of Foreign Affairs Mizuno Tadanori 水野忠徳 informed the inhabitants, an eclectic group of Westerners and Pacific Islanders, that Japan had claimed the archipelago as part of the Japanese territory. Only thirty-two years earlier, a group of whalers had for the first time settled permanently on the islands. After the magistrate had staked his claim in front of the islanders, the Japanese expedition started to map and explore the island. Captain Ono Tomogorō 小野友五 郎 was sent out to draw the coastlines from the sea ... Read More

  • Introduction
    • Abstract: In a 2011 video installation, Hanoi art collective the Propeller Group set out to "rebrand" Communism in the visual language of TV commercials, mocking contemporary global "progressive" discourses. The Propeller Group used this kind of postmillennial rebranding to mock both capitalist advertising and Communist propaganda in Vietnam. Such rebranding, however, is neither new nor limited to challenging public art. Political and cultural rebranding, which involves new labels and discourses and aims to develop a new identity, was not a term used to describe Mao's recasting of Soviet Marxism for Chinese use in the 1930s (he called it "the Sinification of Marxism"). However, the current Chinese government has embarked on ... Read More

  • Li Yujie and the Rebranding of the White Lotus Tradition
    • Abstract: China's interwar period saw the flourishing of what some scholars (Ownby 2016; Goossaert and Palmer 2011, ch. 4) have called "redemptive societies," new religious movements that preached traditional Chinese spiritual teachings to those seeking moral direction and community. The best known and most important such group is undoubtedly the Yiguandao, one of the few to survive into the twenty-first century. However, during the interwar period, there were perhaps a dozen redemptive societies well established nationally, and many others active locally. Many redemptive societies offered a rebranding, or repackaging, of what we have traditionally called the "White Lotus sectarian tradition," a form of popular religion ... • China as the Leader of the Weak and Small: The Ruoxiao Nations and
           Guomindang Nationalism
    • Abstract: The establishment of the League of Nations in 1920 immediately opened up new possibilities for Chinese intellectuals, just as it brought disappointment as a result of its failure to deliver on promises of equality and justice. Although the League often served as a venue for China and Japan to vent their frustrations with each other, representatives of both countries agreed on the need for a clause on racial equality to be a defining feature of the Covenant of the League of Nations and both argued for this during the Paris Peace Conference (Burkman 2007, 80–84). Chinese intellectuals' frustration with the League accelerated after China failed to be awarded a seat on any of the nonpermanent councils and was unable to ... Read More

  • Networks, Parties, and the "Oppressed Nations": The Comintern and Chinese
           Communists Overseas, 1926–1935
    • Abstract: This article offers a snapshot of how Chinese Communist networks took shape in the late 1920s to early 1930s as Chinese revolutionaries moved across the globe between Berlin, Brussels, San Francisco, Havana, Moscow, Manila, and Singapore. Long-distance connections facilitated organizational borrowings, which amalgamated international revolutionary networks and local movements against imperialism. This transnational perspective and the focus on Chinese overseas networks contribute to the recent scholarship on international influences on the Chinese Communist movement beyond Moscow (one influence being American Communism), and further complicate the picture of the Comintern (1919–1943), or Third Communist ... • New Revolutionary Agenda: The Interwar Japanese Left on the "Chinese
           Revolution"
    • Abstract: The Japanese Communist Party (JCP) was established in the summer of 1922 in the midst of the ongoing Russian Revolution, Russian Civil War (1918–1922), and Foreign Intervention into the Revolution, which included Japanese interventionist forces (White 1950; Ullman 1961). With the aim of expanding its formal and informal control over the territories formerly under the Russian imperial sphere of influence, Japan deployed considerable armed forces to the Russian Far East, eastern Siberia, and northern Manchuria between January 1918 and 1925.1 Consequently, the Russian Bolsheviks viewed imperial Japan as a major threat to the survival of the Soviet state and the world proletarian revolution, most importantly in China ... • "Awakening Asia": Korean Student Activists in Japan, The Asia Kunglun, and
           Asian Solidarity, 1910–1923
    • Abstract: During the interwar period, self-affirmative notions of an imminent awakening of Asia that would bring about regional solidarity in order to challenge the Eurocentric international order became increasingly popular across Asia. Yet historical research focuses almost exclusively on the study of Chinese pan-Asianism and state-based Japanese pan-Asianism, which eventually formed the ideological foundation of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere during World War II (Hotta 2007; Saaler and Szpilman 2011a, 2011b). Consequently, scholarship on alternative approaches to Asian regional solidarity is quite scarce (Karl 1998). In particular, the question of what regional integration meant for Korean and Taiwanese ... Read More

  • From Revolutionary Culture to Original Culture and Back: "On New
Democracy" and the Kampucheanization of Marxism-Leninism, 1940–1965
    • Abstract: The ideas that Mao Zedong developed in his early writings as a Communist, and in his Yan'an Canon (1937–1945) in particular, reveal his adaptation of Marxism-Leninism to suit China's particular conditions—or "peculiarities," as he described them in "On New Democracy" (Takeuchi 1972, 148). First published in the little-known Zhōngguó wénhuà 中國文化 (Chinese culture) journal in its obscure first issue in January 1940, "On New Democracy" contains Mao's greatest theoretical achievements: an outlining of China's new revolutionary culture and the "Sinification of Marxism." Mao had discussed the latter previously, yet his proposal in "On New Democracy," whereby "national distinctiveness became embodied in the particular ... Read More

  • Meisho zue and the Mapping of Prosperity in Late Tokugawa Japan
    • Abstract: Entertaining exhibitions arrayed on the dry bed of the Kamo River distracted throngs of people seeking relief from the summer heat in Tokugawaera Kyoto.1 By the time Osaka-based ukiyo-e artist Takehara Shunchōsai 竹原春朝斎 (fl. 1772–1801) depicted this phenomenon in the illustrated book Miyako meisho zue 都名所図会 (1780), the site had become especially popular for whiling away muggy nights between the seventh and eighteenth days of the sixth month (figure 1). Titled Shijō kawara yū suzumi 四条河 原夕涼 (View of night cooling at the Fourth Avenue riverbed), the scene teems with activity under a sky brightened by a full moon. Two ticket takers sit at the entrance of a tall tent below a banner that advertises kyokumochi, a kind of ... Read More
