  • Miraculous Mathematics: André Bazin’s Film Theory
    • Abstract: André Bazin’s film theory is filled with scientific metaphors based on his secular education between 1933 and 1938 in La Rochelle at the École Normale d’Instituteurs. There, he excelled in a wide range of subjects such as biology, physics, chemistry, and, of course, mathematics. Inasmuch as Bazin’s handling of art and religion deeply shaped his film theory, in this essay I shall limit myself to his use of algebra, arithmetic, calculus, and analytic geometry to acknowledge his debt to Henri Bergson’s philosophy, discuss his views on Henri-Georges Clouzot’s policier Les Diaboliques (1955), and explain his admiration for Vittorio De Sica’s early neorealist films such as The Bicycle Thief (1948), Miracle in Milan ... • Cruel Attachments, Tender Counterpoints: Configuring the Collective in
           Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon
    • Abstract: In line with prominent topoi of Michael Haneke scholarship, most reviewers of The White Ribbon (2009), original title Das weiße Band, agreed that the film presents its twenty-first-century audiences with a starkly filmed, more or less Brechtian—and thereby belatedly modernist or even anachronistic—study on the emergence of fascism in an authoritarian German village cosmos on the eve of World War I.1 With its temporally removed voice-over narrator and its black-and-white aesthetics, the film evidently undertakes a critical analysis of collective violence that keeps its audiences at a distance.2 My own initial response was quite in line with that traditional reading. At best, The White Ribbon’s critical tale seemed ... Read More

  • Encounters with the Material: Krzysztof Wodiczko and Site-Specific Media
           Art
    • Abstract: Since 1981, Krzysztof Wodiczko has been crafting site-specific outdoor projections, artwork that has drawn attention to a viewer’s surroundings in order to provide a critique of the public function of often overlooked monumental architecture.1 His work addresses these overlooked structures in hopes of compelling viewers to connect their relevance to ongoing social and political problems. With the widespread use of outdoor projections in urban environments (often referred to as “urban screens”) and a growing interest in mobile technologies, such as augmented reality (AR), that allow for the superimposition of visual imagery into people’s field of vision, Wodiczko’s work is a prescient encounter with technologies to ... • Introduction
    • Abstract: In recent years, scholars across the humanities have been drawn to questions of thingness and material culture, especially in the idea that “things” in a “material” culture exist independently of us as perceivers and users. The most recent statement of this investment is object-oriented ontology, which is becoming important to film and media scholars for the ways in which it refuses the “for us” relation that pertains between subjects and objects by leveraging aspects of objects’ existence that are “withdrawn” from human observation and use expressly so that the object may begin to speak for itself. Significantly, this object-oriented turn has usefully complicated questions of the subject, especially as they’ve ... Read More

  • On the Impossibility of Object-Oriented Film Theory
    • Abstract: How, Stranger, can I describe an image except as something fashioned in the likeness of the true? And do you mean this something to be some other true thing, or what do you mean?Certainly not another true thing, but only a resemblance. And you mean by true that which really is?Yes.And the not true is that which is the opposite of the true?Exactly.A resemblance, then, is not really real, if, as you say, not true?Nay, but it is in a certain sense. You mean to say, not in a true sense?Yes; it is in reality only an image. Then what we call an image is in reality really unreal. In what a strange complication of being and not-being we are involved!Strange! I should think so. See how, by his reciprocation of opposites, the ... Read More

  • Assemblage, Constellation, Image: Reading Filmic Matter
    • Abstract: Films are, indisputably, objects. Archives are devoted to the painstaking and costly work of preserving and storing films, and countless reels have been lost to the ravages of chemical decay and physical neglect. Films are materially reproducible, duplicated into an ever-increasing array of analogue and digital formats. And yet debates about the ontological status of film tend toward generalities about the medium as a whole, often limiting their scope to the screened image rather than the physical mechanisms by which those images are stored and conveyed. And formal readings of individual titles rarely consider the nuanced distinctions between their competing, physical manifestations. One could easily imagine ... Read More

  • The Displacement Project
    • Abstract: Toward the end of Johann Goethe’s first stay in Venice in 1786, an experience recounted in Italian Journey, he made two curious remarks about objects. Italian Journey is a record of Goethe’s childlike enthusiasm for the places and objects that had been theretofore known to him only in the writings and engravings of others and that were now about to show themselves to him, one after the other, in place. What Goethe was most eager to see in northern Italy, and had already begun to do so in Vicenza, was Palladian architecture. This is, as we know, a passion that André Bazin came to share with Goethe, especially in his expressed admiration of the forced perspective set of Palladio’s Teatro Olimpico.1 In a letter dated ... • Black Matters
    • Abstract: My particular path into the question posed in this special section—is a moving image an object?—begins with the observation that blackness poses a major problem for the ontological mapping of the object offered by what is increasingly (and capaciously) described as object-oriented philosophy (OOP), in particular its assumptions of a flat ontology equally occupied by subject and object, the assertion of object “speech,” and the idea of the vibrancy of matter.1Asking whether a moving image is an object is a way to inquire about whether recent philosophical orientations toward the object can be put in dialogue with the “object” of film studies, here understood as the moving image. That said, I am compelled to ... Read More

  • Ec-Static Air: The Unseeable Sounds of Being Beside Oneself
    • Abstract: Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Air Doll (Kûki ningyô, 2009) begins by following the character Hideo as he travels by train toward his home. After arriving, he speaks to someone offscreen before the film cuts to a scene at the dinner table where an over-the-shoulder shot from Hideo’s point of view reveals that he was and continues speaking to a blow-up sex doll he has named Nozomi. Spectators see the plastic surface of Nozomi’s body, and despite how Hideo personifies her, she remains the silent recipient of his statements. The scene transitions to Hideo’s bedroom, where he will use Nozomi as a sexual object. During this sexual encounter, sound begins to orientate spectators toward the surface of Nozomi’s plastic exterior more ... Read More

  • Roxana and Other Feminist (Hi)stories
    • Abstract: While many U.S. scholars have turned their attention away from gender and queer theory, those working in other parts of the world—such as France or Spain—have only recently recognized and welcomed these discursive frameworks. The fact that Anne Emmanuelle Berger is active in both American and French academic contexts allows her to examine the “dislocated scene” of gender and queer theory and to perform a series of analytical gestures that provide novel insights into current feminist and postfeminist debates. Berger thus manages to challenge the reductive narratives and assumptions that are unfortunately still reiterated in most of the discourses on “gender,” “queer,” and “feminism” in the West. One of these ... • The Torturer’s Smile as the Stain of Enjoyment
    • Abstract: In his well-known essay “Kant with Sade,”1 Jacques Lacan claims that Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade, is in fact the truth of Kant. That is to say, the Kantian respect for the moral law, according to Lacan, contains an unconscious enjoyment that possesses a certain sadistic characteristic. The respect for the moral law articulated by Kant is unknowingly tied to a sadistic pleasure in being able to cause pain and humiliation in the victim. The Sadist torturer acts, according to Lacan, as an agent of the moral law. Although for Kant there must remain a gap between the subject’s pathological motivations and personal sentiments (feelings, personal desires, and so forth) and the moral law, there is, as ...
