  • Are the Two Approaches to Moral Economy Irreconcilable'
    • Abstract: The concept of moral economy is embedded in two very distinct intellectual traditions. The first lineage, in social history, cultural anthropology, and political science, is linked to the pioneering work of E. P. Thompson, where it appears surreptitiously in The Making of the English Working Class and more confidently in his 1971 Past & Present article.1 It has to do with certain forms of exchange of goods and services grounded in a specific set of norms and obligations consensually accepted within the group, typically among peasants in premarket societies. Tensions arise and sometimes riots occur when these norms and obligations, which imply solidarity and reciprocity, are not respected. The second tradition, in ... Read More

  • The Imperfect Promise of The Gift
    • Abstract: Unlike Bronislaw Malinowski (in the United Kingdom) or Franz Boas (in the United States), Marcel Mauss was never a field anthropologist. His understanding of what were then called “archaic” societies came entirely second hand, and the classic essay on The Gift is, first and foremost, a work of remarkable erudition, almost equally divided between footnotes and text. In the academic context of Third Republic France, it came across as the felicitous marriage of encyclopedic reading and sharp analytical skill in a system that rewarded both.Mauss was born into a family of small embroidery manufacturers in the Vosges region, in the Eastern part of France. After attending the lycée in Epinal, he joined his uncle Émile ... Read More

  • Moral Economy in Its Place: The Contribution of James C. Scott
    • Abstract: James C. Scott’s credentials as a theorist of the moral economy would seem to be impeccable. Not only did he give the term additional currency in his 1976 book The Moral Economy of the Peasant (MEP); he also genuflected toward E. P. Thompson’s discussions of moral economy when he invoked the concept.1 Nevertheless, I will argue that, for Scott, “moral economy” was a label of convenience. When he wrote under this heading, he was more concerned with a larger set of issues in social and political theory—including exploitation, false consciousness, and legitimacy—than was encompassed by moral economy in its Thompsonian sense. As I note at the end of the essay, we could resolve this apparent tension by expanding the ... Read More

  • On the Mexican Ejido
    • Abstract: When it comes to imagining a functioning moral economy—defined here as a web of internal social relations governed by principles of relative equity, reciprocity, and collective responsibility—the longstanding representation of Mexico’s indigenous villages comes readily to mind. For a very long time now, the social organization of Mexico’s indigenous agrarian villages has been described in terms of a moral economy. From the calpullis of pre-Hispanic times and the Indian republics of Spanish colonialism to the pueblos of the nineteenth century and the ejidos (land grant communities) of the twentieth, the normative economic order of these social and territorial units—land tenure and use, production, consumption, and ... • T. H. Marshall, the Moral Economy, and Social Rights
    • Abstract: At a crucial juncture in his famous lectures on “Citizenship and Social Class,” English sociologist T. H. Marshall explained that the new social rights he associated with the invention of the twentieth-century welfare state were in fact a blast from the past—a bequest from the moral economy to a later age grappling with political economy run amok. For this reason, Marshall’s celebrated theory of social rights provides one aperture through which to intervene in a dispute brewing between starkly alternative views of the moral economy tradition he invoked.“The original source of social rights was membership of local communities,” Marshall related. The Elizabethan Poor Law backed up this ramshackle local approach. Just ... Read More

  • R. H. Tawney
    • Abstract: The concept of the “moral economy” has enjoyed some notoriety in recent political discourse, most notably from the Left, with the critique of the wealth gap and the neoliberal model of globalization.1 But the attempt to re-moralize economic relations has not been confined to progressive politics. Indeed, in recent history, it is arguably conservatives who have done a better job of presenting their economic programs as aspects of a broader moral agenda: in the United Kingdom, for instance, one of the bases upon which Margaret Thatcher rose to power was an attack upon an “economics-first” approach to government and an articulation of a moral agenda to which economic policy was nominally subordinate.2Although he comes ... • “I Am No Longer Answerable for Its Actions”: E. P. Thompson
           After Moral Economy
    • Abstract: The intellectual history of moral economy falls into two periods: before and after E. P. Thompson. As discussed elsewhere in this dossier, the search for an ethical critique of political economy has an extended lineage.1 Despite this lengthy genealogy, the term “moral economy” had essentially fallen out of use by the turn of the twentieth century. To take one revealing example, the journals in JSTOR’s archives record 156 usages of “moral economy” between its first appearance in 1835 and 1970. Since 1971, there have been almost nine thousand. What accounts for this shift' The answer begins with the 1971 publication of Thompson’s “The Moral Economy of the English Crowd.”2 Thompson had referred to “moral economy” a ... • The Moral Economy of the Capitalist Crowd: Utopianism, the Reality of
Society, and the Market as a Morally Instituted Process in Karl
           Polanyi’s The Great Transformation
    • Abstract: Few conceptual innovations have been more consequential than E. P. Thompson’s “moral economy.” While the opposition between markets and morals predates his famous essay by several centuries, it was Thompson who engraved the term in historical consciousness to represent the eighteenth-century “crowd’s” normative and institutional resistance to the rise of the “cash nexus.”1 Formulated to capture the idea of livelihood organized by moral norms of reciprocity and redistributive justice, the term echoed Karl Polanyi’s earlier rejection of the influential but nonsensical dichotomy between “ideal” and “material” interests.2 With wide-spread currency, the moral economy came to serve as a proxy for the idea that ... • Beyond Humanitarian Logics: Volunteer-Refugee Encounters in Chios and
           Paris
    • Abstract: In the autumn of 2017, authorities on the Greek island of Chios began the long-awaited process of dismantling Souda, a refugee camp in the main town that had been providing shelter to approximately one thousand people at the time. Leaving the military-run EU “hotspot” Vial—a remote, abandoned factory—as the only “reception” site on the island, a long-term volunteer reflected on the implications: “Due to Souda being an open camp, volunteers have been able to identify and support the most vulnerable refugees, as the authorities and humanitarian organizations have failed time and time again . . . Had they been locked away behind the fences of Vial, we would have known of their existence, but not who they are—neither ... Read More

  • The Moral Economies of Early Modern Europe
    • Abstract: To say “moral economy,” especially in reference to early modern Europe, is to summon the work of Edward Palmer Thompson (1924–1993). Other contributions to this dossier situate his work in the intellectual and political climate of his lifetime and trace his influence on other scholars. Here, I address his concept of the moral economy for what it does and does not tell us about how markets operated and how inequality was understood in early modern Europe. As the only premodern historian in a special issue of a journal primarily concerned with contemporary issues, I hope to introduce nonspecialists to lesser-known principles of economic justice that governed Old Regime societies and have far-reaching implications for ... • Introduction: The Moral Economy, The Careers of a Concept
    • Abstract: The financial crash of 2008 pulled the veil off the myth of the freestanding market. A movement of ideas and interests championing privatization and decontrol, especially over the movement of money, had redefined public authority over economic life from the 1960s. Seizing position after position across location after location, this movement came to challenge the coalitions that managed the post–World War II models of development and welfare. The appeal to market fundamentalism yielded new interests and new coalitions, creating the vertebrae of a neoconservative brand of politics to power and swayed even social democratic forces to the middle—or the margins. Entire political systems molded to the model across a vast ... Read More

  • Live-Tweeting and Distant Suffering: Nicholas Kristof as Global Savior
    • Abstract: In his forward to the American edition of Somaly Mam’s The Road of Lost Innocence, Nicholas Kristof celebrates the Cambodian activist and sex-trafficking survivor for embodying “the resilience, courage, and nobility of the human spirit.”1 Kristof, a journalist for The New York Times, was among Mam’s most enthusiastic champions until an article published in Newsweek in 2014 threw the veracity of her testimony into doubt.2 In his writing, Kristof has played a significant role in defining sex trafficking on the global stage—determining its operational parameters, identifying the people it involves, and proposing action to be taken in response. Kristof’s mediation has taken several forms. In addition to writing the ... Read More
