  • On Laughter and Dreaming in Pushkin
    • Abstract: This essay will argue that moments of malicious laughter play a central role in the dreams described in Alexander Pushkin's plays, poems, and stories. These outbursts of cruel laughing or grinning, almost always directed at the dreamer, precipitate a vertiginous loss of control and, at the same time, a paralysis. They cause the dreamer to be at once isolated from and trapped within his dream. It is my contention that the stratifying effect of this laughter—emerging from the mouths of dream characters and battering the dreamer—is one of Pushkin's most complex and melancholy commentaries on the intersubjective nature of our existence.Mikhail Bakhtin ended Rabelais and His World, his great study of laughter and social ... • Where Are Liberty and Law': Subjectivizing the Naïve in Chénier,
           Pushkin, and Lermontov
    • Abstract: An oft-overlooked element of intertextual poetics is its representational character. Reminiscences of earlier texts position the author as reader and generate the image of a specific reading practice—a representation of reception. Moreover, this metaliterary aspect of intertextuality often interacts with self-reflexive narratives of reception within the text. There are numerous narratives of this kind. For example, the theme of a reader's seduction by textual fantasies is central to modern literature—from Don Quixote's chivalric romances to Emma Bovary's novels. In this essay, I look at the intertextual fate of a different scenario of reception—that of an imprisoned poet, who overhears another prisoner singing in ... Read More

  • Onegin's Album: A Creative and Literary Crossroads
    • Abstract: In canto VII of Pushkin's novel in verse, Tatiana visits Onegin's study, where she peruses his surroundings and pores over his books, an experience full of voyeuristic pleasures. In fact, this is an encounter with the enigmatic Onegin himself, with someone whose person may be absent but whose spirit is present. Tatiana's visit to the study is placed on the central axis of the story where heroine and hero hold converse, and where she investigates the riddle which he represents for her. As has always been the case in the novel, to find out more about Onegin, to come into contact with him, Tatiana must first transgress against social prohibitions. By this point, Onegin has become the murderer of her sister's ... Read More

  • The Poet Turned Journalist: Alexander Pushkin and the Reading Public
    • Abstract: In January of 1838, Faddei Bulgarin published an article titled "Readers and Writers" ("Chitateli i pisateli") in the Northern Bee (Severnaia pchela), the newspaper he edited jointly with his long-time collaborator Nikolai Grech. Structured as a casual conversation between a professional writer, who is a stand-in for Bulgarin, and his friend who, it is indicated emphatically, is not a cultural producer, the article treats lightheartedly the position of writers in relation to their audiences. Bulgarin writes,[it] is not the writer but the reader who reigns, legislates, and judges in literature; and where does the reader pronounce these judgments' At the lectern, in journals' No, at the whist game, at dinner, at tea ... • The Lifelike Statues of Ovid and Pushkin's Orthodoxy
    • Abstract: Many well-known ties bind the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin to the Latin poet Ovid (43 BCE–17/18 CE). Pushkin himself emphasized the parallels between his exile to the south under Alexander I and Ovid's exile to the same region under Augustus. Readings of Ovid's works have provided productive insights into many of Pushkin's individual poems as well as his "mythopoetic consciousness."2 This article reopens one of the less-frequently considered connections between Pushkin and Ovid: their imitations of Horace's "Exegi monumentum."3 With good reason, scholarly consensus has long defined the "Monuments" of Horace (23 BCE) and Derzhavin (1795) as the primary network of referentiality in Pushkin's "Monument" (1836). ... • Tragedy in the Balkans: Pushkin's Critique of Romantic Ideology in The
           Gypsies
    • Abstract: Among the many colorful escapades that Pushkin is said to have taken part in during his famed Southern exile were the several weeks that he spent among a nomadic Gypsy tribe in Moldavia. According to an oral account passed on to her nephew by Pushkin's Kishinev acquaintance Ekaterina Zakhar´evna Stamo (née Ralli), the twenty-two-year-old poet was accompanying Stamo's brother Konstantin on a visit to Dolna when he met and fell madly in love with a beautiful Gypsy girl named Zemfira. The daughter of the respected tribe elder (buli-basha), Zemfira was a tall girl with large black eyes and long undulating braids who dressed like a man, wore colorful trousers (sharovary), and smoked a pipe. Pushkin was so enchanted by ... Read More

  • Tim Vasen (1964–2015)
    • Abstract: Pushkin Review joins Princeton and Yale universities, and the larger theatrical community, in mourning the loss of Tim Vasen, Head of the Program in Theater at Princeton, who died in a freak fall outside his Brooklyn home at the end of December 2015. He was fifty-one years old. Tim directed Princeton undergraduates in acclaimed revivals of two Pushkin Jubilee projects featured in these pages: the Meyerhold-Prokofiev Boris Godunov (2007; PR 10, 2007) and the Tairov-Prokofiev-Krzhizhanovsky Eugene Onegin (2012; PR 16–17, 2013–14). Tim's passion for Pushkin and for things Russian had led him to study the language, learn Onegin stanzas by heart, and visit Mikhailovskoe deep in snow to obtain footage for theatrical ... Read More
