  • Tradition and Character: Helen's Divine Epithets in the Iliad
    • Abstract: In Book 3 of the Iliad, Helen is named three times with an epithet which calls her either "born of Zeus" (Διὸς ἐκγεγαυῖα) or "daughter of Zeus" (κούρη Διὸς).1 These epithets are noticeable because they are the only times the poet makes any direct reference to her parentage. They become particularly interesting when we notice that throughout the scene in which these epithets occur, Helen is conspicuously lacking in power or even personal volition, as she unwillingly does the bidding first of Iris, to go out onto the city walls and watch the duel of Paris and Menelaus, and then of Aphrodite, to return to Paris in his bedroom. It may therefore seem that these epithets are being used out of context, and are at odds ... Read More

  • Characterization through the Use of Myth in Plautus' Menaechmi
    • Abstract: With its plot about identical twins, the Menaechmi revolves around issues of identity, which in turn have been the focus of much of the scholarship on the play.1 An examination of the role of the mythological references and allusions in the play complements the literature on identity in the play because the use of myth by the twins shows both how similar and how different they are. Although the references and allusions to myth in the Menaechmi are relatively few and brief, they serve as an example of how thematic Plautus' use of myth can be.2The brothers are distinguished from all the other characters in the play by being the only ones who repeatedly have recourse to myth, usually in situations in which they are ... • Sound, Sense, and Sequence in Meleager and Catullus
    • Abstract: Hellenistic literary epigram, and the Garland of Meleager in particular, exercised a profound influence on Catullus both as a rich stock of motifs and themes as well as the target of direct allusions and adaptations.1 It has occasionally been suggested that Catullus also modeled the arrangement of his poems in sequences after Meleager's: for instance, convincing parallels have been drawn between the introductory poems in each corpus.2 Partly because of the difficulty of reconstructing the sequence of Meleager's collection, imperfectly preserved as it is in the Anthologia Palatina (AP), this area of connection remains largely unexplored. Although the precise identification or reconstruction of sequences of epigrams ... Read More

  • Life in the Street, or Why Historians Should Read the Poets
    • Abstract: Street scene in Rome, as imagined by Alan Sorrell (Sorrell and Birley 12).I begin with one of the most famous scenes in the whole of Latin literature, Horace's encounter with the pest (Satires 1.9.1–11):1ibam forte uia sacra, sicut meus est mos, nescio quid meditans nugarum, totus in illis.accurrit quidam notus mihi nomine tantum, arreptaque manu: 'quid agis, dulcissime rerum'''suauiter, ut nunc est' inquam, 'et cupio omnia quae uis.' 5cum adsectaretur, 'num quid uis'' occupo. at ille'noris nos' inquit; 'docti sumus.' hic ego 'plurishoc' inquam 'mihi eris.' misere discedere quaerens, ire modo ocius, interdum consistere, in auremdicere nescio quid puero, cum sudor ad imos 10minaret talos.I happened to ... • The Hippocratic Critical Days
    • Abstract: Among the ca. 60–70 works that comprise the Hippocratic corpus is a short text entitled Περὶ κρισίμων [ἡμερῶν] (De diebus iudicatoriis, or On Critical Days — hereafter CD). CD is a compilation of verbatim (or nearly verbatim) passages from four Hippocratic treatises: Epidemics III, Sevens, Internal Affections, and Diseases III.1 It was assembled at some point between the beginning of the 3rd c. CE and the early 6th c. CE.2Thus, CD is not the handiwork of Hippocrates. As commentators from Martianus (425) in the early 17th c. to Littré (IX 296) in the mid-19th c. made a point to note, as a compilation CD adds nothing new to our understanding of Hippocratic medicine; the only value seen in it is its preservation of a ...
