  • Editor’s Note
    • Abstract: One day the world appears as expected, in its order, everything gradually shifting and rearranging itself as it does, and the next day the world is entirely different. We’ve all experienced these before-and-after moments, sometimes more or less alone, sometimes collectively. In these moments “after” the very air seems changed, and you can’t just say good morning the way you did the day before. There’s an awkward silence everywhere you go, as at a funeral, where to admit anything but grief seems obscene, and joy especially so. And yet there it is, the sun is shining and birds are doing their thing, people, even, eating and drinking and laughing. And while some days the crack between before and after seems ... Read More

  • Trespassers
    • Abstract: The woman on the swing wore an orange plastic sun visor and a pair of flamingo clip-ons, which pinched her earlobes to a similar, if more painful, shade of pink. Her jumper was corduroy, embroidered with a moose on the front pocket, and it reminded the girls of something their second grade teacher might have worn. She had loved moose and wore moose sweaters and jewelry and had a moose sticker on the back of her car but seemed to have no knowledge of the species beyond its decorative functions. She had laughed at a boy who asked whether the moose on her tote bag was a cow or a bull. For this, the girls had never forgiven her, nor had they forgiven themselves for laughing along. It had been their first lesson in the ... Read More

  • Tell Me How to Do This
    • Abstract: He was not a man who could take a door off the hinges, trim it to size with a circular saw, and rehang it. He was not a man who would comfortably fist bump with other men in a room full of men who fist bumped. He was not a football player. He was not a badass. He was a man who liked lying in a hammock, who liked food and pleasure and who drank too much most nights not to gear up in a Stanley Kowalski way but to untether and unreel into bed and dreams. But in spite of what his wife, Kit, thought of him, he was not a pussy. He could rake a yard full of leaves into four lawn-and-leaf bags in under an hour. He could sit through a sleepless night on the bathroom floor cracking bad jokes while his three daughters took ... Read More

  • In the Desert
    • Abstract: Six months after his discharge from the army and three months after he stopped drinking, Frank Elroy got his first full night’s sleep. He celebrated with breakfast in bed—a big bowl of Apple Jacks eaten slowly, every bite savored, his ears full of crunches that drowned out the birds. He was looking at the dirty dishes in the kitchen when he heard Rhonda McCarthy and her boys packing their car next door, and he thought that sometime in the night a corner had been turned, because what seemed so complicated was simple now. People should be happy. He and Rhonda, they should be in love. What was he waiting for? So he stuck his head out the window of his trailer and said, “Going to Indianapolis, huh? Sounds cool.”Rhonda ... Read More

  • Endure
    • Abstract: Mis offered a job teaching American English to Bulgarian teenagers. On our first night in Bulgaria we eat dinner with P, a second-year teacher at once alarmist, deluded, and wise. Her boyfriend works for our government. If something goes down—“If what goes down?” “Don’t you follow the news?”—P will receive coordinates to a field south of Sofia, where a chopper will evacuate her out of the country. We move to a border city in southern Bulgaria home to the world’s tallest statue of the Madonna. Beneath it teenagers sell marijuana. A paralyzed man scooters in circles. Street-sweeping women clear leaves from the streets using brooms made out of wires and twigs. Depleted, persistent, the women travel in teams wearing ... Read More

  • Poland’s Illiberal Challenge
    • Abstract: Democracy in Poland is under threat. Since the conservative Law and Justice party (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość) won a parliamentary majority in the October 2015 elections, the country has been plunged into crisis. On a cool Sunday morning in Warsaw, I sat down to discuss this with Rafał Pankowski, a political scientist, author of scholarly works on nationalism, and editor at Never Again magazine. We met in an old wooden amphitheater on the twelfth floor of the Palace of Culture, the imposing brick skyscraper that was Stalin’s gift to the Polish capital. Since 1989, it has housed a range of new institutions, including the university Collegium Civitas, where Rafał is a faculty member. As we faced the steep rows of risers ... Read More

  • The Lindegaard Boy
    • Abstract: One evening that first summer of freedom when the rapeseed fields were dark gold and a smell of burnt corn had settled in the air, a farmhand appeared and called everyone to the street, saying they were coming, they were coming. The maid bore the Lindegaard boy in her arms, his face all sticky with rhubarb jam, slogged the fifty yards of gravel, lifted him up onto the fence, and they watched together the solemn little procession of three women marching single file, pushed along by members of the military police.“Here they are,” the farmhand snarled, “Feltmadrasser! Feltmadrasser! Feltmadrasser!”Field mattresses. The jibe passed from mouth to mouth in steady trochees until it turned fugal and finally thickened to ... Read More

  • Did You Really Just Say That to Me?
    • Abstract: Let me begin by saying I’m racist. I really only recognized it starting about ten years ago in college, slight glimmers of recognition, which I would inwardly deny, citing to myself various evidence—black friends from high school, playing soccer with Mexicans on the club team, writing philosophy papers on racial prejudice in novels and movies, etc. It wasn’t until an argument with my wife, Mallory, early in our relationship before we were married, that I fully accepted that I am, in fact, racist. And I don’t mean just that I’m merely a part of this larger system of institutionalized racism, though of course I acknowledge that’s a major problem in this country. But karma or whatever seemed to be pointing me ... Read More

  • Insistence and Resistance: Murakami and Mizumura in Translation
    • Abstract: Translation is a kind of traffic, in nearly every sense of the word. There’s the most obvious sense, in that translations cross borders of time, place, and culture, moving from one language into another. But traffic’s other meaning—that is, the buying and selling of goods—also applies. Translators themselves can be said to traffic in words, sounds, images, and more; whether what is trafficked is tangible or intangible, it’s implied that what is bought, sold, and bartered is in any case commodified. When we think about traffic we also inevitably think about congestion, about impediments to smooth circulation—of vehicles, of course, but also, by extension, of ideas and things. While translations do cross borders ... Read More

  • The Week of German Cinema
    • Abstract: At this sort of event the audience is, on the one hand, rather specialized—we are talking about culture after all—and on the other hand quite predictable, drawn from among a small, easily quantifiable group of regulars—we are talking about culture after all. A few are recognizable public figures, almost famous, though the fame of literary critics, translators, even poets is a bit different from that of actors, athletes, or singers. Even the most celebrated poet can visit a crowded marketplace without worrying that he will be obsessively accosted, while picking out a handsome ear of corn, by a group of local youths professing their admiration and undying devotion.Cultural gatherings are also sure to draw a number of ... • Miracle Fruit
    • Abstract: At seven pm, three quarters of the recessed lights in the main office space are programmed to turn off. What’s left is deemed bright enough for the custodial staff to do their work, but what I love, looking out at it through the interior window of my office, is that the glow of all the screensavers creates a faint aurora over the top of all the cubicle walls almost like that of a town at night hidden just beyond a ridge. I know it’s just a silly image, but it gives me the sort of comfort I imagine God would feel looking at a snow-dusted Swiss village and allowing himself to forget the rest of the troubled world for a while. I stay late like this because it’s the easiest time to handle the real, unbureaucratic work ... Read More

  • Magpies
    • Abstract: One afternoon, years ago when I was maybe nine or ten, my uncle Bill held a funeral downstairs while my brother and I watched Heckle and Jeckle cartoons, with the sound turned off, upstairs. Uncle Bill’s funeral home stood just three blocks from Asbury Park’s alluring boardwalk. Trips down to the shore from our house near Trenton marked the high points of our New Jersey summers. The funeral home itself took up the whole first floor of a massive stucco building on Third Avenue. Uncle Bill, Auntie Mil (my dad’s sister), and my cousin Bill (who played football for Asbury Park’s Blue Bishops and would take over his dad’s business) lived on the second. Their third floor accommodated family and other visitors down its ... Read More

  • Everything That Cannot Be Undone: On Reading and the Poetry of David Yezzi
    • Abstract: It is with a sense of recognition that I read lines such as these describing the present state of American literary criticism: “decades of antihumanist one-upmanship,” observes Lisa Ruddick, “have left the profession with a fascination for shaking the value out of what seems human, alive, and whole.” Hers is a voice among an increasing number of readers and scholars skeptical about critical positions that have themselves become threadbare through the exiling of concepts such as individuality, humanism, privacy, intuition, and indeed the texts themselves, from criticism—in a word, all of the qualities by which many are first drawn to literature and that have given readers pleasure for centuries. An intellectual ... Read More

  • Two City Sketches
    • Abstract: CHARLES [JOHN HUFFAM] DICKENS (1812–1870), a prolific Victorian novelist, remains one of the best known and beloved English authors of all time. The second of the eight children of John Dickens and Elizabeth Barrow, he was born in Portsmouth into precarious social circumstances (one of his grandfathers had been a domestic servant, and the other was charged with embezzlement). His father (whose personality is reflected in the character of Mr. Micawber in Dickens’s David Copperfield) succeeded in achieving middle class status as a naval pay clerk, but his carefree management of money had unfortunate consequences for the family. When Dickens was twelve he was obliged to leave school and take on manual labor in a ... Read More
