  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: An art form that relies entirely on the written word is necessarily abstract, existing almost exclusively in the mind of the writer and then the reader. It can't be touched, tasted, or smelled, not exactly. Even when a poem is read aloud it is still just words, abstractions—not the thing itself but the idea of the thing. And yet the writing assembled here somehow manages to give us the impression of being unusually earthy, pungent, and sensual—cream, meringue, and soft cherry chew; trash, piss, chowder. And this is only the beginning. Maybe it's just that the northern hemisphere is tilting toward the sun now, but even the words around here seem to be warming up, basking in their own physicality. To conjure a ... Read More

  • Wild Coast
    • Abstract: Lizette married Vusi in a small ceremony held on her family's farm when she was six years old. Colonel, Vusi's older brother, officiated, skipping the I do's and instead repeating, You may now kiss the bride, until Lizette and Vusi were done with kissing and, calling their witness—Blommetjie, Lizette's Ridgeback pup—removed their clothes to swim in the algae-scum pond. It was the third time they'd been married that year but neither of them tired of the game. It was practice; they didn't doubt that one day they would be standing up together in a church with real witnesses, rings, and a priest. Already, hidden by the trunks and foliage of the spider gum grove behind the house, Lizette had pulled down her shorts and ... Read More

  • Three from Ings & Oughts, and Biomass, and The Life of Shagdarov, and
Beneath the Gaze of Athena ("Minerval")
    • Abstract: A teacher of literature, a highly spiritual lady, had a husband who was an alcoholic. One day her friend told her: I know this one woman, a psychic, go see her, maybe she can help. So, the literature teacher takes her sad salary and goes to see the psychic. She tells her: so and so, my husband drinks, can you do something. The psychic looks at a photo of the husband and says: he doesn't have a soul. How's that' asks the frightened literature teacher. No soul, that's how, says the psychic. Biomass. So the literature teacher goes home upset. She tries to chase away these thoughts about the soul. What nonsense, she thinks, everyone has a soul, my husband must have one. How would he be alive, without a soul' It was his ... Read More

  • Introduction
    • Abstract: Why Terrence Malick, and why now' When I asked poets, novelists, artists, and critics about the films that meant the most to them, Malick was the figure that kept cropping up in our conversations. I got notes back written in brilliantly divergent moods of awe and controlled anger. There's a sense in which Malick's films are spectacularly out of touch with our era, in the best and the worst possible senses of the phrase. The experimental sensibility of his recent work contains a multitude of wonders and flaws. His early films, long since canonized as contemporary classics, remain volatile and require insistent questioning. The pages that follow investigate Malick's films from Badlands (1973) to Song to Song (2017). I ... Read More

  • Watching Badlands in New Jersey
    • Abstract: Growing up in New Jersey, I liked the classic movies on Channel 9. wvor Secaucus featured two weekend programs: Million Dollar Movie and Sunday Matinee. Who was the weirdo programming these slots' I was too young to understand the way Warren Beatty eyed Faye Dunaway on a dusty street, his gaze narrowing into the uncomfortable adult desire that launches the riotous killing spree in Bonnie and Clyde. I watched so much I should not have seen. Where were my parents' Carrie at the prom, her pale slip dress hanging on her body like a bloody wraith. An odd yellow light played a bit part in everything I saw. Was the image flawed, or was it the result of malfunctioning equipment' I knew then that I liked old things and open ... Read More

  • A House Is Not a Home: The Farmer's House Holds Passion in Days of Heaven
    • Abstract: Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven begins with a dream for freedom. It's 1916, and Bill (Richard Gere), like many young men of any era, needs to escape his life. He has responsibilities—a girlfriend, Abby (Brooke Adams); a little sister, Linda (Linda Manz)—and so he also needs to find work. But he just had an altercation on his job, a good job in a steel mill in Chicago, which resulted in the death of the foreman. It was an accident—he didn't mean to kill him—so Bill sets out for the Texas Panhandle to work crops and to start over. For a white male in the pre–Jazz Age of America, it would be reasonable to see this as a viable plan, as long as you stayed out of trouble.Bill, however, has a quick temper, a quality that ... • Mud Doctoring: On Days of Heaven
    • Abstract: I was twenty and had just flunked out of a mediocre land-grant university high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. When someone asked my father how I ever got admitted in the first place, he apparently said, "they took his pulse'" That I had gotten into any college at all was a miracle, but even more miraculous was that it had taken me two years to get kicked out, since I attended one-tenth of my classes, spent ten hours in the bars to every quarter-hour in the library, and was arrested three out of the four semesters I spent in town. The one worthwhile thing I had done there—besides walking around wistfully in the sleet equating sadness with art—was to accidentally attend a film festival. The winter of 1978 was the ... Read More

  • Beauty's Failed Seduction: The Thin Red Line
    • Abstract: Gorgeous. Sumptuous. Palm fronds and the high light they wave through. Hillsides of wind-blown grass shifting through hue and shine. Clear waters that rock and hold American soldier Witt (Jim Caviezel) and a few island kids, all the embodiment of delight. Terrence Malick knows how to film Eden. He does it in other films, too—The New World and Days of Heaven in particular. His lens is rapturous when it turns away from "action," and part of me admires and even loves that he reaches toward beauty in times of horror, that he insists on the discordant coexistence of the larger world's ongoing gorgeousness and the industrialized human's noisy violation of it.But there is also a smoothness to these moments that I ... • On Parakeets, in The New World
    • Abstract: Terrence Malick's fourth feature film, The New World, reimagines the founding American legend of Pocahontas and Captain John Smith. The premise is that the pair were equals in love, a daring conceit with its own complicated questions aimed backwards at the history of North America. These and other decisions made the film divisive; The New World is a film whose qualities cannot be discerned clearly from its approval score (55 percent) at review-aggregation websites such as Rotten Tomatoes. Personally, I agree with critic John Patterson's observation that the movie "doesn't have fans: it has disciples and partisans and fanatics." I am one of those devotees. To become serious about The New World means sharing its ... Read More

  • Dinosaurs and Dads: On The Tree of Life
    • Abstract: The Tree of Life has a reputation for being divisive. An oft-repeated anecdote about the film claims that after its premiere at Cannes, some members of the audience booed, while others cheered. A week later, it won the Palme d'Or. Critics responded to it like some sort of projective test, a Rorschach blot for cinematic sensibilities. Roger Ebert rhapsodized about its evocative portrayal of a 1950s family, and later added it to his list of the ten best movies ever made. One of the New Yorker's three reviews called it insufferable, interminable, madly repetitive, vague, humorless, grandiose, but also "a considerable enlargement of the rhetoric of cinema." In the Gray Lady, A. O. Scott compared the film, not entirely ... Read More

  • Two Letters about Two Viewings of To the Wonder
    • Abstract: Dear ______,Our shared enthusiasm for To the Wonder puts us at odds with most of the world. Certainly the critical consensus stands against it. Have you read some of those reviews' What is it that we see in this film that others don't' For me it all begins with the images of Mont St-Michel, that venerable Catholic pilgrimage site in Normandy. Malick's images of the place startle my memory. My first trip to Mont St-Michel happened when I was eleven years old. I wasn't raised in the Church, but I believe that in some sense what happened to me when I was eleven ended up bearing fruit twenty-five or so years later. My Catholic baptism in Sri Lanka took place when I was nearly forty. This process connecting time and ... Read More

  • Moving Away and Circling Back: On Knight of Cups
    • Abstract: I came to Malick's Knight of Cups with great hope. I've been teaching his work for over a decade, and screenings of his early films remain among my most life-defining cinematic experiences. Yet I want to do more than narrate my broken dreams or frustrated hopes. It's not exactly a case of what Lauren Berlant might call "cruel optimism"—when that for which you long betrays you, becomes the unhealthy source of your having hoped—but almost. It's neither quite Roland Barthes's "almost," a "painful regime" whose proximity to the desired thing, person, or experience introduces more disappointment than not, but it's almost even this. Writing about Malick's Knight of Cups forces a reckoning with love and gratitude over ... Read More

    • Abstract: Dorothy Parker said, "Los Angeles is seventy-two suburbs in search of a city." Dorothy Parker does not appear in this movie, but there is plenty of driving, as befitting the suburbs. There are sprawling Gatsby-esque parties in sprawling Gatsby-esque mansions. There is a visual march instead of a story. It has a manifesto feel to it: Life has no plot, it says, it has emotion. The world is whatever you are feeling at the moment. You are a passenger looking at something beautiful, but you don't want to get out of the car. This is a drive-by movie. This is a movie about the banality of the banality of beauty.Rick (Christian Bale) is a screenwriter drifting through this limbo world. • A Speck in the Universe: On Voyage of Time
    • Abstract: A few years back, I went to a dentist who played the Discovery Channel constantly, on enormous plasma TVs, throughout the office. It drove the staff crazy. When I asked the woman working the front desk how often the TVs were on, she leveled her gaze at me. "All. Day. Long." It was the dentist's attempt at kindness, she said. For the patients. TVs were mounted above every dental chair so you could watch as the chair started its dread recline. Since I needed twelve dental crowns, I saw a lot of Discovery Channel that year. As demolition began, a cheetah would bound across a vast savanna and tear a gazelle to pieces; a school of fish swam and scattered, swam and scattered in an ocean that went on forever. On the night before Thanksgiving, four wings of the McAuley family gathered at their eight-bedroom cabin in the mountains to make merry. Discreet black sedans rumbled slowly up the long poplar-lined driveway toward the cabin with its distant bright windows, gold-capped acorns and brilliant yellow leaves crunching beneath the tires, and then children tumbled out of back seats gloveless and hatless and scarfless and coatless, laughing at the pure joy of the cold, their newly visible breath dispersing into the strange opacity of this country ... • From the Beginning
    • Abstract: When I was born, the Sanders-Scarborough clan had lived for several generations in the sprawling, blanched little town of Blackwater, Mississippi, just north of Meridian in the backwater region near the Okatibbee Reservoir and the Alabama border. If you weren't a cotton farmer or sharecropper, or a smithy who worked for white folks, there wasn't much else to do there. Some folks got along raising chickens and guinea fowl, some did light farming but could not prosper. Each year they fell further in debt to the landowner, Ol' Man Sanders.Twice in our clan's memory the floods had come in late spring, and no one had been able to plant in time for a summer crop. The seed money was wasted. But most folks stayed on ... Read More

    • Abstract: Aleksy, who is not a hero by any stretch of the imagination, wakes to the sound of retching. Iwona is ill in their bathroom. Aleksy is afraid she will wake either his sister, Wiesława, or his colicky nephew, Lew, both of whom sleep in the second bedroom off the kitchen. Aleksy is nervous because tonight he and Iwona will meet that renowned Jew, Doctor Jakub Feinman. A great man. In the technikum high school where the teenage Aleksy trained as an IT specialist, they read about the doctor, about his ghetto fights, and to this day it is difficult for Aleksy to conceive of him as the sort of human being one has over for dinner. • The Human Soup
    • Abstract: There was a man I saw once or twice a week in the hot tub at the YMCA who talked boisterously, as if he were in a bar, as if he wanted everyone to know his business. His voice was too loud for the intimate setting, where barely clothed strangers sat together in hot water, skin cells sloughing off, simmering in the steaming cauldron. He talked about his fiancée, whom he was bringing over from Russia, about the crazy red tape she had to untangle to get her visa. "She's twenty-five," he said, though he looked late fortyish. He was fat, though handsome, with a fine nose and good straight teeth. He wore gold-rimmed glasses that never fogged. The fat man had been growing less fat over the past few months, perhaps because ... Read More

Of my picking up again of the French language over the Persian and the Aramaic, and before that, the Greek. Of my return to Joan Miró with more depth, finding him there, the man that he was, not the woman I suspected him to be. Or hoped he was. Or pretended he was.Feb. 7For the moment, I am reading French again. • Abstract: The most emphatic warning against classifying Bashan in any rigid or iron-clad category, is a certain drooping manner of the hirsute appendages about the corners of his mouth and the underside of his jaws, features which might not incorrectly be designated as a kind of bristling moustache and goatee—features which, if you will rivet your eye upon them from near or far, will remind you of a griffon or an Airedale terrier! But what odds'—setter or pointer or terrier—Bashan is a fine and handsome animal.
