  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: I'm always surprised, and admittedly also a little bit relieved, when a writer who has all the fixings of public success expresses vulnerability with regard to Facebook. Facebook is many things, but it's a generally accepted fact that it's a place where people project a fantasy version of themselves and brag—humbly, of course, and sometimes obliquely—about their accomplishments. Its second most prominent use may be as a platform for outrage, but outrage expressed on Facebook can be similarly self-serving, as it carries with it a second message: look at me in my righteous outrage. In any case, you'd think that a writer with an enviable career would be less susceptible to the Facebook effect, the "everyone is ... Read More

  • Take Stock
    • Abstract: The stock photo accompanies an article about Germany's legal recognition of intersex infants. Even though the photo has been chosen to embody the "third gender" mentioned in the headline, we have to begin by calling the figure in this photo a woman, for we cannot see a third gender until we define one of the primary two. The woman has porcelain perfect skin. Hair helmeted in a glossy pixie, she wears a stiff white shirt like a cross between a chef's uniform and a spacesuit. (All the great sci-fi writers have known that the future of gender is a space-age matter, and so does this woman.) With a finger white as the tracks left by the moon she traces a translucent box hovering in the air in front of her. Is the box ... Read More

  • Desiccated
    • Abstract: Coming around.Coming around after a night like that (like what') is neither waking up nor regaining consciousness. You're not really awake, your consciousness is buffering at best, and let's not even talk about the senses: the eyes that can't see because the light pains them, the nose rendered useless from all its mucus, the ears hearing nothing but the inner groans and whimpers of your body somewhere (where are you'), the dry tongue a gutted chub on a shore, swollen from breathing through your mouth all night, snoring. Your snoring makes her feel so pissed off at you, sharp elbows in the middle of the back all night despite your being unconscious when you do it.You are diagonal. Going diagonal: that's what she ... • The Freedom to Be Free
    • Abstract: In the 1960s, some years after the publication of her book On Revolution, Hannah Arendt lived in a world of revolutionary events, to which she was particularly sensitive. Such events included the expulsion of Krushchev in the Soviet Union; the construction of the Berlin Wall dividing Germany into two states; the Cuban missile crisis; the so-called "Quiet Revolution" in Canada, nationalistic in character; the Civil Rights movements here and abroad; anti-war protests, some of which were deadly, here and in Europe; military coups in South Korea, Vietnam, and Greece; Pope John XXIII's profoundly revolutionary Second Vatican Council; the horror of the Cultural Revolution in China; the scientific revolution best known as ... • Notes from a Last Man
    • Abstract: It was a belated wedding present. Early last January my wife and I were offered the chance to spend three months in Fort Lauderdale, a touristic city on Florida's southeastern edge, one that in the 1950s served as the nativity scene for the American Spring Break. Around that time, her grandfather bought an apartment four blocks from the ocean, and her family has been vacationing there ever since. The building is a squat midcentury complex with a stucco-white exterior, and in the shared courtyard out back there is a kidney-shaped pool cordoned off from onlookers with a hem of clacking palm trees. Most of the amenities inside the apartment haven't been updated since the Kennedy administration. There are turquoise ... Read More

  • Enough of Billy
    • Abstract: Three of McKinnon's foreign cows were at the fence when Eli turned off the highway and into McKinnon's lane. Great red beasts, shambling and shaggy, they looked like ruined carpets. They looked like buffaloes. But they weren't buffaloes. McKinnon's buffaloes were in one of his other pastures. The animals stared through their fence at Eli as he passed. He waved at them. Eli waved at everyone. Up the rise to the house and barns, into the yard. The doctor's car parked there. Eli pulled in beside it, stopped. Everywhere, McKinnon's poultry: McKinnon's barred rocks, McKinnon's guinea fowl, McKinnon's huge gray geese striding about like lords, with a lord's height, a lord's pride, a lord's brains.Eli parked his truck and ... "The Mountain Rabbit," "Ich Liebe Dich," Aretha Franklin's "Operation Heartbreak," which he had first heard in his twenties on the Armed Forces Network in Korea. He had a good singing voice. He had been Tenor 1 in the church choir; years before that, he had led off the morning exercise song ... Read More

  • Jhumpa Lahiri Goes Italian
    • Abstract: Any casual runner knows how diabolically difficult it is to traverse 26.2 miles in under five hours. However, in 2011, James Gefke not only completed the 115th Boston Marathon in four hours, 18 minutes, and 29 seconds, he did it while carrying thirty pounds of firefighting gear to honor the memory of a fellow firefighter. Similarly, anyone who has ever tried to write a book might agree with George Orwell's assessment that it is "a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness." Why exacerbate the horror by contending with the additional burden of a foreign language's unfamiliar vocabulary and grammar' Joseph Conrad wrote remarkable fiction not in his native Polish or even his second ... • Desire Lines
    • Abstract: It's 1975, and he's sixteen. He feels the cold on his wrists and his ears; drifts of snow rise up behind him to the first floor windows of the high school. She's across the street. It's just the two of them, somehow. She's hopping on one foot and he doesn't understand why. Seeing him, she smiles, then waves him over, calling his name. He notices her pearl earrings. She's lost her clog in the snow and he digs it out, taking his gloves off, his hands turning numb and red. A lavender wool sock covers her foot, with a hole beginning in the toe, and a cable running from her ankle to her knee. Still kneeling, he slips the clog onto her foot. She rests her mittened hands on his shoulders for balance, and now we know where ... Read More

  • The Course of True Love
    • Abstract: I was trying to get my wife to fuck me in the kitchen was the situation. Maybe I shouldn't say fuck. Maybe I should say make love. Language is such a racket. It's always pretending we can only want one thing at a time. But I wanted to make love to my wife while also fucking her kind of hard—in our kitchen. The tender panic of the thing, the lewd intention, that's what I was after. Maybe there's a German word.It was a Friday night. We were both completely thrashed. Our children had done this to us. We had four of them, an insane number. But they were in bed now, sprawled out like little opium addicts. My wife, Reagan, was leaning against the counter, her tush rounding out a pair of pilled pajama bottoms. She did not ... Read More

  • War Stories
    • Abstract: Héctor came back from the war to drink, and to give the ghost of Davy away."I should re-up," he said, more than once. "I've got a couple tours left in me. Hell, I spent so much time in Afghanistan I barely got to see Iraq. It's just, you know. The alcohol is shit. No wonder those fucking ragheads can't handle their problems. I couldn't do it either, if I had to drink that."April brought him another Coors. Héctor had picked a campus bar, full of drunk college kids in ironic T-shirts and expensive tennis shoes. Their noise and closeness made April feel tight and old."I skinned a rat alive once," said Héctor. "Did I tell you that story'""No," April lied. "Let me finish this and get another beer."She came back with her ... Read More

  • To Be Undone: The Art of Mystery in Fiction
    • Abstract: We fiction writers talk a lot—for good reason, and to good end—about character, point of view, dialogue, scene, and summary, but in my experience, we don't talk a lot about mystery. It's not easy to talk about something that is a whispered invitation, a siren song, a flickering light in the distance. It's not easy to talk about something that, even as it encourages us to seek it, resists explanation. Something that wafts like smoke around the edges of the page. Especially when there is, in our culture, an alarming and increasing intolerance for ambiguity, for Keats's famous "negative capability," in which, as he wrote, one is "capable of being in uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching ... • Report from Constantinople
    • Abstract: LADY MARY WORTLEY MONTAGU (born Mary Pierrepont) (1689–1762) secured a reputation among her contemporaries as a vivid, memorable presence and is now best known as the author of some of the liveliest and most engaging letters ever produced in English. When in 1741 a young English visitor had an opportunity to meet her in Rome, where she had traveled to be with her Italian lover, he judged her to be "the most wise, most imprudent; loveliest, disagreeablest; best natured, cruellest woman in the world." Born into an aristocratic family, she was the daughter of the Earl of Kingston and Mary Fielding (a cousin of the novelist Henry Fielding). Her mother died when Lady Mary was five years old; confined to home, she was ... Read More
