  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: This issue begins with a selection of writing from contemporary South African authors. Some of these writers grew up after the laws of apartheid were dismantled, while others grew up believing they never would be. Some have emigrated, some have returned, and others have never lived anywhere else. No one author—or even a dozen authors, as you'll find here—can represent the voice of any nation. In South Africa, though, the idea of a national literature is particularly fraught, as the laws of apartheid, established to keep people "apart" from one another in a strict racial hierarchy, created radically inequitable nations within nations. It was not until the last decade of the twentieth century that these laws of ... Read More

  • Summary of a tourist's report on his return home
    • Abstract: for "us"Ladies and gentlemen. Friends. Countrymen. I must admit that I have not seen much of the world but even with my limited insight, I found one aspect particularly striking, it was all alike, the world is dead. Wherever you kick your heels against the earth, you get nothing but an electric shock from your calf to your knee (if you stomp hard enough) or from time to time a hollow sound. The plants that still pierce the asphalt here and there are withered. The air itself is unclean. God only knows, here and there an effort is still being made. Hopeless optimists are still painting away, are still organizing letters on paper, are still fumbling with musical instruments. I even saw a farmer spitting on his hands ... Read More

  • Finding and Growing Athlone
    • Abstract: i remember the people of pfukaniwhose huts were uprooted in 1968…goats, dogs, bicycles and pots heaped onto the trucks …leaving behind fruit trees and gardensleaving behind graves of their beloved onesI was born a child of removal, the year after my parents married and the year after they were "removed." The victims of Forced Removals weren't removed to somewhere, only from. Nothing comes after it.Athlone was where they went after they were removed, and Claremont was where they were from. Athlone was … nowhere. In contrast to the fertile soil of their garden in Claremont, the ground here was the grey sand of the Cape Flats, deposited by the sea over the course of a hundred thousand years. A hundred thousand ... Read More

  • The Road to Battambang
    • Abstract: Mme Rancourt is Cambodian but she has lived most of her life in France, where she moved in 1980, about a year after Vietnamese troops chased the remnants of the black-shirted Khmer Rouge army out of Phnom Penh. She is Cambodian but she is mostly French, and she is French in a peculiarly French way—in a light, understated, occasionally brooding, but inevitably elegant way. Her weightless tailored linen pantsuits are testimony to her style and easy understanding of the demands of a tropical climate. She looks fit and much younger than her fifty-seven years. When in Battambang she always stays at Le Pavillon, an old colonial hotel run by a French management company. There is a timeless feel about the hotel's interior ... Read More

  • Isabella's Basil
    • Abstract: A girl lived with her mother and three brothers in a rundown house of Italianate lines. While the daughter tended pots of dainty herbs, the mother lay down, pale upon her bed. Her daughter lay down beside her. They were like a botanical engraving, two stems in two variants, blown and budding. The house, too, desired to die: A ceiling cracked. A window shattered. A door unhinged. The brothers knew just how to plant their mother's remains, but were at a loss over the girl left alive. The eldest brother said, "She's not yet ripe for marriage."The middle brother said, "She needs meat and manners."The youngest brother said, "I'm making a list of bachelors with arable land and ready cash. Maybe horses. Houses. Boats. ... Read More

  • Blaming the Brontës: Book(ish) Reviews from the 1930s
    • Abstract: Mary Butts (1890-1937) was a prolific writer of novels, stories, and essays, and over the past twenty-five years much of her writing has been devotedly restored to print. Though she was more often noted for her famous literary friendships, reckless life, and early death, her distinctive voice is now recognized for its contribution to literary Modernism. As her books have been reissued they've captivated various writers and critics, among them poets John Ashbery and Marie Ponsot, who describes Butts's novels as "haunted with a sense of invisible life that we all know about but don't have much in the way of language for" The Telegraph compares her work to "the rambling and chaotic but strangely haunting fiction of ... • Other People's Families
    • Abstract: Apparently vacation means never having to cook. Evenings they drive to one of the nearby restaurants, swell up with salt and eat the leftovers for lunch, until everyone is so sick of it that finally Shira says, "I'll make something tonight." How grateful they are, except she can tell her mother-in-law Claudia is hiding disappointment that she doesn't cook something Traditional. Claudia is all about traditional. To her mind, the only thing better than traditional is Authentic.Helping herself to another taco, Claudia says an Indian restaurant just opened in Duncan. "We'll have to take the ferry over one night," she says. "Shira can tell us if it's the real deal!"To which Gabe, knowing Shira's buttons, grips her ... Read More

  • A Miniature for My Mother
    • Abstract: Aside from a few patches of white where the color has scratched off, the brooch is in good condition—a tiny painting on ivory, set in a gold mount. No jewels. It has been well cared for. The image is of a young man in black clothes leaning against a pedestal topped with an urn. Hair-thin lines make up his cravat, his face, the blades of grass at his feet, and the serifs of the pedestal's inscription: Sacred be thy memory. He leans on his right elbow, his head resting on his hand; his left arm hangs by his side, holding an open book. Over the tomb, there's a hint of tree branches, behind them blue sky. Around the edge of the pin, there are gold letters: Rebecca Wilkinson * nat * 7 May 1771 * OB: 23 JAN * ... Read More

  • Post-its
    • Abstract: He reads in the ugly brown reclining chair with the quilt tucked in around his half-naked body. He reads a chapter book, a designation we use to refer to a book that doesn't contain pictures and isn't a movie or TV tie-in, a book with discrete chapters and a sustained narrative account. He reads for a half hour. I set the kitchen timer. We're forcing him to read for this length of time, but it's a different kind of forcing than when we force him to do his chores or when we force him to eat all the food on his plate—he enjoys being forced to read. The kitchen timer beeps. I walk down the hall to the study, tell him that although the half hour is up, he's free to continue reading if he likes. He says he would prefer ... Read More

  • The Pathetic Fallacy
    • Abstract: It would seem that the variability of the weather was purposely devised to furnish mankind with unfailing material for conversation. It snowed this morning in northern Stout County. Two inches on the ground by daybreak, another four by noon. I know this not because I live in Stout County, north or south. I don't. Nor do I plan to travel there soon. I won't. Rather, I know it because my father lives in northern Stout County, and this is what we talk about."People probably aren't taking it too hard," he says. In March, the snow melts a little faster in northern Wisconsin. He pauses to consult the digital thermometer that I know rests on the scraped kitchen counter. The digital thermometer is his joy; it reports the ... Read More

  • Hit Me
    • Abstract: Sweet was fastest at the game of knuckles, almost undefeatable, with an uncanny sense of how to feint, how long to wait between strikes, and when to drive his knuckles into the flesh of an opponent's fist, rapid-fire, whap, whap, whap, whap. He'd roll back the sleeve of his jacket to show the shiny circular scar he'd burned into himself with the hot rim of his pot pipe sometime the previous year—a way to mark himself apart, piss off his mom, ask for attention, demonstrate the lasting seriousness of his dedication to being a fuckup, or maybe to prove once and for all that everything was a joke and there was no reason for anything. My Satanic vaccination, he called it sometimes. I don't even fuckin remember, I was so ... Read More

  • These Are Good Indians
    • Abstract: Somewhere in the lush hot fields of August are born the first snows of October, November at the latest. Soft cold crystals falling, piling on to the unfinished works of man, bringing calamity. If a house has an incomplete roof, openings in the walls, openings in the sheathing, snow drifts in, settles, gets heavy and wet. Then mold, warp, expansion, seepage, freeze and thaw, freeze and thaw, the forces that split boulders. In no time, a floor pops up, walls twist, pipes leak, ice penetrates a joint, part of a roof shears off. Nature reclaims the materials. In these mountains, a house begun but not closed in, exposed to one winter, becomes a ruin. And in the spring, you may as well just tear it down and start over ... Read More

  • The X Process: Anti-Psychiatry and Its Hopes
    • Abstract: The famous "Escape" or "run away from it all" is an excursion in a trap even if the trap includes the south seas, which are only for those who want to paint them or sail them.R.d. Laing started his medical career at Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, as an enthusiastic innovator. When he came to work in the female refractory ward, nobody treated patients with respect. He asked nurses to instead be friendly with the twelve most hopeless cases, and found that these changes had an immediate effect. The patients who had been dayroom automatons now "hopped and skipped and twiddled around," delighted by the attention.1 After eighteen months of the new regimen, the twelve of them were discharged. It was, Laing said ... Read More

  • Drapery Study
    • Abstract: MARY HENRIETTA KINGSLEY (1862–1900), born in London, was a Victorian traveler best known for her remarkable reports from Africa. Her father was a physician who accompanied well-to-do families on their world travels, her mother his former housekeeper; the parents had married only a few days before Mary's birth. Though her younger brother was sent off to study law at Cambridge, she herself was largely self-educated, reading widely in natural history and accounts of exploration, and learning German to assist in her father's research as an amateur anthropologist. The family moved to Kent in 1879 and to Cambridge seven years later. Not long after Mary Kingsley returned from a brief trip to Paris in 1888, her mother's ... Read More

  • Consider the Leopard
    • Abstract: I must say the African leopard is an audacious animal, although it is ungrateful of me to say a word against him, after the way he has let me off personally, and I will speak of his extreme beauty as compensation for my ingratitude. I really think, taken as a whole, he is the most lovely animal I have ever seen; only seeing him, in the one way you can gain a full idea of his beauty, namely in his native forest, is not an unmixed joy to a person, like myself, of a nervous disposition. I may remark that my nervousness regarding the big game of Africa is of a rather peculiar kind. I can confidently say I am not afraid of any wild animal—until I see it—and then—well I will yield to nobody in terror; fortunately as I ... Read More
