  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: I should have spent the past week's early mornings gathering ideas for this editor's note, but instead I had another deadline in mind. I knew I'd never get to London to see Woolf Works, a recent Royal Ballet production, but I had plans to see it in an HD broadcast in Albany, not three hours' drive from here. To be prepared I wanted to listen to Max Richter's score, and at the same time to reread The Waves, one of the three Virginia Woolf novels the ballet derives from, and the one I either loved or hated the most, I wasn't sure anymore.I once thought I would reread The Waves every year of my life, but each time I picked it up I read a few lines and changed my mind. I was afraid it would disappoint me, and that I ... Read More

  • The Silences of Paris
    • Abstract: The soundtrack to the following play is primarily composed of files found in the French radio archives. We believe it's worth noting that, despite the nature of the material, these files were not used with polemical intentions. They have become part of a story we can deplore but one whose notes cannot be erased. The names of all living persons have been removed. What remains, then, are sonorous facts in their original form, and each listener is welcome to draw his own conclusions. The creators of this work acknowledge only the strength of these materials in giving an accurate picture of what might be called the sound of the Occupation, as we have known it for the past four years, but also as people the world over ... • Stop 'n' Go
    • Abstract: Every day but Sunday he dresses in the uniform of his former profession: khaki-colored work clothes, steel-toed brogans, a thin windbreaker zipped to the Adam's apple if there is a shadowy sweetness in the morning breeze. He rises before dawn, lights the pilot of the kerosene stove, lets the dogs out, careful not to slap the screen door. He sits at the kitchen table drinking instant coffee, black, for an hour until his wife rises and fries breakfast wordlessly in her housecoat. Neither of his sons wanted to take over the farm and his daughter moved up to Raleigh to work in a bank and he doesn't understand a good three-quarters of the things he hears people say. Commercials on television perplex him. There doesn't ... Read More

  • Many of the Men
    • Abstract: Jackson's in stop-and-go traffic on Dorchester Avenue with Darius in the back. They're on their way to the chicken place, both of them regretting the lost opportunity to buy season tickets when Danny Ainge grabbed the last leg of the Big Three and all the good seats got taken."Yeah, my buddy had four spots in the second row behind the basket, just waiting for my go-ahead to click Purchase. Right there. Where the players fall into the cameras," Darius says."And over where the cheerleaders sit," Jackson adds."Indeed. Over where the cheerleaders sit."They laugh and then they both ride quietly for a while. Jackson turns up the XM station he's floating through a weak frequency in the car radio, and sees his passenger in ... Read More

  • The Relief Pitcher's Mother
    • Abstract: Is the one I feel sorry for. Every time. Yes, it can be hard to be the batter's mother, especially when there are two outs and the bases are loaded and you have to watch him go down on a called strike. That can sting for a while, especially if you're sitting with your team, among the parents of the stranded runners. And yes, I'm sure it's hard sometimes to be the first baseman's mother, and the catcher's mother must have some aches and pains by the time the game is over—but the relief pitcher's mother, man oh man, that's a totally different level. All of them, any of them, great and small. I feel sorry for Mariano Rivera's mother, wherever she may be, even though I trained in Boston and settled near Boston and ... Read More

  • Eshu Finds Work
    • Abstract: In July, as Eshu is chasing me down, I stumble across a newspaper article about a group of men in London who like to dress and live like dogs. These men, these members of the "pup community," spend their time dozing on the floor and leaping around with squeaky toys. They roll in the dirt. They nuzzle their human handlers. The article makes clear these men seek only acceptance as they are, which I am certainly willing to grant. Still, reading the article I can't help but think of a phrase from my childhood, a phrase about which I am ambivalent but which I cannot completely disavow. The phrase is this: Now that is some white folks' mess."White folks' mess" was a phrase used often by the adults in my black, southern ... Read More

  • No Document Is Alike
    • Abstract: The Soviets' surprise launch of Sputnik in 1957 came as a wake-up call for the United States. In response, the Eisenhower administration created the National Defense Education Act Title IV fellowships. While the main purpose of these NDEA fellowships was to provide the US with engineering and mathematics experts, it also paid for students to pursue foreign languages. The idea was that if our nation knew languages it would be safe. I thought that if I knew languages, I would be safe. The NDEA paid for my entire—entire—graduate study at Stanford, including an allowance for books. I had classes in Middle High German, Old High German, Old Icelandic, and Old English, and the price of textbooks was steep.I had no doubt ... Read More

  • Alterations by Elvera
    • Abstract: Today I bought a dress. It was displayed inside an open steamer trunk—the fancy kind with a miniature built-in closet and collapsible wooden clothes hangers. At first, I thought the garment was a blouse, because everything from the waist down was pooled in the depths of the trunk. The young woman tending the store called it a "tea dress" as she carefully lifted it out. It was made in the late 1930s or early 1940s—black rayon with a panel of cream-colored cotton lace on the breast. One of the side seams had come apart slightly, and the original shoulder pads were wizened with age and dangling by threads. But I saw that the split could be mended and the pads removed altogether, and the dress was otherwise in perfect ... Read More

  • Conundrum: A Story About Reading
    • Abstract: Reality doesn't exist, time doesn't exist, personality doesn't exist. God was the omniscient author, but he died; now no one knows the plot, and since our reality lacks the sanction of a creator, there's no guarantee as to the authenticity of the received version. This has to do with books, and reading, too.You see, I was walking at night in the dream, a book in my hands.Or, more exactly, I had a dream about the original hardbound of Rabbit Redux, the John Updike novel, and then there was also the whole thing with the sadness of my recently deceased brother-in-law Bill to complicate it all, what this is really about. You know, Rabbit Redux, the second in the Rabbit series of four books that examine the protagonist ... Like everybody else in the industry, you wait.It come like the worst thing that could happen, when they announce people will have to go "in tranches" every month. At first, every time you don't get a envelope, you breathe a sigh of relief. After a while, though, you start feeling like a death-row inmate in a cell near the gallows; like these bitches want you to witness everybody else execution. • The Alchemy of Art: An Interview with Charles Johnson
    • Abstract: Charles Johnson has shown exceptional talent in a wide variety of artistic endeavors: cartoonist, novelist, short story writer, essayist, screenwriter, and educator. Johnson, who established an early reputation as a cartoonist, received his undergraduate degree in journalism from Southern Illinois University while working with and under the guidance of novelist John Gardner. He earned a master's degree in philosophy and a PhD in philosophy and aesthetics from State University of New York–Stony Brook. Johnson joined the faculty at the University of Washington in 1976. In the spring of 2009, Johnson, who had held the S. Wilson and Grace M. Pollock Professorship for Excellence in English and was the former Director of ... Read More

  • Autumn Closing In
    • Abstract: I've spent much of my adult life pining for a composite moment of ecstasy experienced in my youth through recorded music. Looking now to name this moment in a word, I first thought of ascension, after John Coltrane's tumultuous 1966 album, but I've settled instead on the more modest lift, after George McCrae's "I Get Lifted," a 1974 funk single produced by H. W. Casey and Richard Finch, the pair behind KC and the Sunshine Band. I love all the rests in the record's dark G minor groove, and how what would normally be a cymbal part—three hi-hat hits followed by a crash—is ingeniously, breathily vocalized: chick-a-chick aahh.I can't say precisely when my nostalgia for this feeling began, but in retrospect it seems to ... • Reflections on Our Current Condition
    • Abstract: THOMAS CARLYLE (1795–1881), one of the most influential English authors of the nineteenth century, was born into a large Calvinist family in Ecclefechan, a farming village in southwest Scotland. A gifted student, he was seen as a promising candidate for the ministry, and was enrolled at the Annan Academy in preparation for further studies at the University of Edinburgh, where he presented himself in November 1809 at the age of fourteen. At Annan Academy he distinguished himself in mathematics, but also began reading his way through the works of celebrated British novelists like Defoe, Fielding, and Sterne, as well as The Arabian Nights. These explorations persisted during his years at Edinburgh, where he went on to ... Read More
