  • About This Issue
    • Abstract: Every church building has a story to tell. In our lead article, Karen Park of St. Norbert College examines the unique origins of Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She tells how the site—envisioned and established by Raymond Burke when he was Bishop of La Crosse—did not develop organically from the devotionalism of the faithful, but rather arose as a monument to a “particular understanding of Catholic identity centered on the role of the hierarchy, sexual ethics, and aesthetics.” Our second article, contributed by Raymond Schroth, SJ, recounts the history of the Suppression of the Society of Jesus in the eighteenth century. Synthesizing existing scholarship, he discusses how the ... Read More

  • An Unfinished Council: Vatican II, Pope Francis, and the Renewal of
Catholicism by Richard R. Gaillardetz (review)
    • Abstract: This is an insightful book about the situation of the Catholic Church before, during, and fifty years after Vatican II. As the Introduction suggests, Vatican II can be pictured as an ecclesiological building project concerned with a renewed vision for the church, “undertaken in the shadow of a still imposing but largely antiquated ecclesial ‘structure.’” Before Vatican II, “Catholics dwelled in an enchanted world sustained by a sensual religious imagination . . . . The clergy were viewed as exemplars of holiness, sacramental ‘dispensers,’ and keepers of ecclesiastical order and stability.” The pre-Vatican II church was a hierocratic, clerical institution. It was supported by five pillars: ... Read More

  • Dorothy Day: Love in Action by Patrick Jordan (review)
    • Abstract: So many fine writers have documented the life of Dorothy Day in detail, that one might be tempted to ask “why another?” But the significance of (now) “Servant of God” Dorothy Day goes far beyond the objective facts of her life. Many would argue that her most important contributions were spiritual and intellectual and in that realm there are infinite possibilities for interpretation. In his short and very personal biography, Patrick Jordan has given the reader insight into those dimensions of Dorothy Day’s life. This brief work has little room for a detailed story of her life. Rather Jordan focuses on Dorothy’s spiritual and intellectual attributes that most affected him while he worked at the Catholic Worker ... Read More

  • Elizabeth Johnson: Questing For God by Heidi Schlumpf (review)
    • Abstract: Elizabeth Johnson has not lived a quiet life although that may have been her original plan. In six concise but in-depth chapters, Heidi Schlumpf presents us with a perspective of Sister Elizabeth Johnson, the well-known, honored, and respected systematic theologian. Johnson has spent the majority of her life “questing” for the living God, seeking “to wrestle with the mystery that is God, especially in the context of the experience of Catholics in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries” (4). That quest has taken her from a loving and large Brooklyn Catholic family to podiums and forums she most likely never envisioned. Johnson’s life followed the normal trajectory of young Catholic ... • Judas Was a Bishop: An Old Man in His Reforming Catholic Church by William
           M. Shea (review)
    • Abstract: Over the years, I’ve become wary of memoirs of resigned priests. More often than not, they are written by men who loved their priesthood but felt compelled to leave active ministry in order to maintain their integrity or their spiritual or psychological health. For some, their decision to leave raised both raw anguish of soul and spiritual liberation that years later they felt compelled to take pen to paper to record their spiritual odyssey. The stories I’ve read tend to be linked by common threads: a young man allured by the mystique of priesthood, happy and fulfilling early years in ministry, and eventually the unsettling loneliness of celibacy coupled with the realization of the deep human flaws, if not ... • Not a Catholic Nation: The Ku Klux Klan Confronts New England in the 1920s
           by Mark Paul Richard (review)
    • Abstract: Much has been written in the last few decades about the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s, a national (unlike its post-Civil War predecessor) organization with an estimated four million members at its zenith. Mark Paul Richard—professor of history and Canadian studies at SUNY-Plattsburgh—has now provided an important addition to this growing historiography. The first substantive examination of the Klan in New England, Richard’s Not a Catholic Nation makes clear that the KKK was active and aggressive in the region, and that Catholics were equally active and aggressive in their resistance. Not a Catholic Nation is organized on a state-by-state basis, starting with two chapters on Maine and then moving southward. ... Read More

  • History and Presence by Robert A. Orsi (review)
    • Abstract: I read History and Presence on a train ride through southern France, after two weeks of almost overwhelming evidence there of the marked divide between secularity (laicité) and living faiths that assume the existence of God, or what Orsi calls the divide between “absence” and “presence.” While in the United States it is usually Protestants who represent “absence,” in formerly Catholic France, French nationalism is its vehicle. The superiority of secularism/absence is currently being deployed there against Muslim immigrants, as seen in the frequent and militant singing of La Marseillaise and in graffiti sporting the Revolutionary motto of “liberté, egalité, fraternité”; and also against Catholics, evidenced ... • Spiritual and Religious: Explorations for Seekers by Roger Haight (review)
    • Abstract: The conjunction in the book’s title is telling. With the word “and,” Haight forcefully resists separating spirituality from religion, and forms his founding thesis. He sees religion as something that comes into being as a response to spirituality and argues that spiritualties require the institutional forms of religion to carry them forward. Even as spirituality and religion necessitate one another, Haight maintains that spirituality is primary. Each of the book’s fourteen chapters either works to justify this claim or to build implications from it. The effect is something like a condensed systematic theology, which holds spirituality as the centerpiece for addressing a broad range of key theological issues ... Read More

  • Built with Faith: Italian American Imagination and Catholic Material
Culture in New York City by Joseph Sciorra (review)
    • Abstract: In the interest of full transparency, I admit at the outset that I collaborated with Joseph Sciorra, the author of this very important and interesting book, in conducting fieldwork when I was a graduate student. I have also been published in a collection of essays on Italian American culture for which he was the editor. As a reviewer of his most recent book Built with Faith, this puts me in a unique position which I hope my readers will see as an advantage rather than a bias. Built with Faith: Italian American Imagination and Catholic Material Culture in New York City is a collection of essays that are best categorized as a study in vernacular or lived religion. Some of the essays have been ... Read More

  • Catholics in America: Religious Identity and Cultural Assimilation from
John Carroll to Flannery O’Connor by Russell Shaw (review)
    • Abstract: Catholics in America: Religious Identity and Cultural Assimilation from John Carroll to Flannery O’Connor, the work of the widely published journalist and author, Russell Shaw, provides fifteen vignettes of various champions of American Catholic history. Prefaced by an introduction and concluding with an afterword, Shaw has written a helpful monograph that gives some flavor to the variability of American Catholic life. The introduction of this book sets the tone and provides its rationale. Acknowledging that immigration and assimilation built the American church, he suggests that assimilating into contemporary U.S. culture might be problematic due to the increasingly more inhospitable environment in ... • St. Peter Claver Church and School, Philadelphia, PA: A Collaborative
           Effort
    • Abstract: St. Peter Claver Church was the “Mother Church” for African American Catholics in Philadelphia.1 This essay will describe some of people who called first for a school for “colored” children and then for a church and parish. Among the people who supported this cause were the Drexel family of Philadelphia and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, founded by Mother M. Katharine Drexel.2 Black Catholics have been present in Philadelphia since before the American Revolution. For most of this time, they worshiped in Catholic churches as the whites did, but not with them. Many attended services at St. Joseph’s, Holy Trinity, or St. Augustine’s, but faced prejudice that took the form of their being ... Read More

  • The Press at Vatican II: The Contribution of Father Edward Heston, CSC
    • Abstract: When reviewing the work of the press at Vatican II, the name of Xavier Rynne (a pseudonym for the Redemptorist Father Francis X. Murphy) inevitably arises first. Indeed, Rynne’s famous “Letters from Vatican City,” published in The New Yorker, were a hit and widely read. Exposing much of the intrigue, arguments, and back-room discussions between the Council Fathers, Rynne’s work added significantly to the outside world’s knowledge of the day-to-day activity at Vatican II, the first Council to be widely covered by the international press. Indeed, the primary historian of Vatican II, John O’Malley, SJ, referred to the essays as “a delicious inside account” of the first session.1 While Father Murphy’s name ... Read More

  • “Citadel of Orthodoxy”: Meaning, Message, and Pilgrimage at Our Lady
of Guadalupe Shrine in La Crosse, Wisconsin
    • Abstract: The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin is a new American religious site, dedicated less than ten years ago—in 2008. Built of expensive materials, designed by the world’s leading sacred architects, and filled with original art pieces in classical representative style, the shrine was not constructed in response to the spiritual needs or desires of any group of believers, but upon the vision of then-bishop of La Crosse, Raymond L. Burke. The shrine succeeds in conveying a clear and forceful message about what is true to those who visit. These visitors, despite being referred to as “pilgrims,” are not invited or allowed to participate in an experience that would allow them to create or ... Read More

  • Death and Resurrection: The Suppression of the Jesuits in North America
    • Abstract: When the news reached the Jesuits of Maryland in 1773 that the 22,000 member Society of Jesus had been suppressed by a decree of Pope Clement XIV and that all they had struggled for since the first Jesuit in the New World was killed by Florida Indians in 1566 was destined to be dust, they could not have been surprised. Their new home was still half-born, still “savage.” From its first years, young men all over Europe had been inspired to join these spiritual soldiers—first to save their own souls, but also the souls of others. To be a missionary was to risk, indeed welcome, death in martyrdom. The seven Jesuits who in 1570 moved north to the Chesapeake Bay were slain within a few months. The ... Read More

  • The Other Catholics: Remaking America’s Largest Religion by Julie
           Byrne (review)
    • Abstract: The “other Catholics” in the title of Julie Byrne’s new book are the members of independent Catholic communities, which is to say those not institutionally connected with the Roman Catholic Church: Byrne estimates that there are between half a million and a million such individuals in the United States. “Not institutionally connected,” admittedly an awkward phrase, captures something of the liminal status of these groups. In the eyes of Rome they are officially schismatic; in the eyes of their members, they are “Catholicism without Rome,” Catholic denominations in a tradition that has so often denied its denominationalism (8). They range from the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X to the progressive Church ... Read More
