  • About This Issue
    • Abstract: Gordon C. Zahn, who died in 2007, would now be turning one hundred years of age. In our lead article, Benjamin T. Peters (University of Saint Joseph, Connecticut) helps us understand how the Catholic sociologist and pacifist, through his life and scholarship, had a transformative impact on Catholicism in and beyond the United States. Ryan P. Murphy (Chestnut Hill College) in “The Hidden, Unconventional Missionary Spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia,” examines and interprets the refocusing of organizational identity of this religious community in the decades after the Second Vatican Council. In “Outrage in Boston: The Sexual Abuse Scandal and the Downfall of Cardinal ... Read More

  • “A Completely Fresh Reappraisal of War”: Americanism, Radicalism, and
the Catholic Pacifism of Gordon Zahn
    • Abstract: In a collection of Gordon Zahn’s papers, there is a copy of a letter Zahn received in February 1945 from Michael Curley, the archbishop of Baltimore and Washington. Curley’s letter was a reply to a request Zahn had made to several U.S. bishops seeking funds to continue producing a journal called the Catholic C.O., which Zahn and other Catholic conscientious objectors had published during their years doing alternative service in Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps run by the Association of Catholic Conscientious Objectors. The ACCO was an offshoot of the Catholic Worker, which first ran Camp Simon in New Hampshire and then a special-service unit at Rosewood State Hospital near Baltimore. With the end of the war ... • The Hidden, Unconventional Missionary Spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph
           of Philadelphia
    • Abstract: The Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia, like many congregations of women religious that underwent processes of institutional renewal in the years after the Second Vatican Council, were emboldened by the zeitgeist of the time and looked inward to reevaluate their roles in the church and in contemporary society.1 For this community, some outward signs of institutional change—like altering the religious habit—were obvious, while others—like a recommitment to the poor and oppressed through education and advocacy—were subtler, yet equally powerful in defining organizational identity. In this paper, I explore the lived experiences and the congregational writings of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the ... Read More

  • Outrage in Boston: The Sexual Abuse Scandal and the Downfall of Cardinal
           Bernard Law
    • Abstract: This article was prompted by the forum “Writing Catholic History After the Sex Abuse Crisis,” which appeared in American Catholic Studies in 2016. Moderated by Catherine R. Osborne, the forum featured reflections from historians James M. O’Toole, Leslie Woodcock Tentler, and John C. Seitz, and archivist Emilie Gagnet Leumas, with a response by James T. Fisher. In their remarks, the panelists grappled with how the crisis affected them and its implication for historians of Catholicism.1 Seitz, drawing upon Marian Ronan’s Tracing the Sign of the Cross: Sexuality, Mourning, and the Future of American Catholicism, viewed the forum as a call to introspection rather than reaction: an opportunity to mourn the loss ... • The Joy of Religious Pluralism: A Personal Journey by Peter C. Phan
           (review)
    • Abstract: In 2005, Peter C. Phan, the Ignacio Ellacuria, SJ Chair of Catholic Social Thought at Georgetown University, was informed that his book, Being Religious Interreligiously: Asian Perspectives on Interfaith Dialogue (Orbis, 2004) was being investigated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Catholic Church’s highest doctrinal body, on the grounds that his book “is notably confused on a number of points of Catholic doctrine and also contains serious ambiguities” (175). The Joy of Religious Pluralism amply documents Phan’s response to these charges. A first chapter narrates the process all the way to its inconclusive ending, which was seemingly a standoff rather than a resolution. Four substantive ... Read More

  • Irish-American Autobiography: The Divided Hearts of Athletes, Priests,
Pilgrims, and More by James Silas Rogers (review)
    • Abstract: The first point to make about James Silas Rogers’s new book on Irish American autobiography is that it is a welcome addition to the scholarship on ethnic identity and literature. The second point is that his work only scratches the surface of the work that is left to be done on the subject of Irish-American self-reflection or even revelation. The experience of collecting oral histories suggests that the Irish can be reticent to talk about themselves, so any analysis of the written record is valuable. Each of the ten essay-like chapters raises more questions than it answers. Clearly comfortable with the ethnic print and screen (large and small) catalog of the twentieth century, Rogers selectively chooses ... Read More

  • Bishop Soter Stephen Ortynsky and the Genesis of the Eastern Catholic
Churches in America by Ivan Kaszczak (review)
    • Abstract: Ivan Kaszczak’s recent book provides a helpful resource for those interested in Eastern Christianity and Catholicism in America as well as immigrant studies. The work itself serves as a biography of the first Eastern Catholic bishop assigned to America (and indeed, the Western hemisphere), filling a significant lacuna in American Catholic studies. His book length treatment goes well beyond both his article written two years prior. To write this work, Kaszczak utilized an extensive body of multi-lingual source materials and treated Catholic-Orthodox tensions as well as Latin Catholic-Eastern Catholic tensions and also internal Eastern Catholic divisions. With all the various factions, one might ... Read More

  • The Civil War Diary of Father James Sheeran: Confederate Chaplain and
Redemptorist ed. by Patrick J. Hayes (review)
    • Abstract: Although the study of religion during the U.S. Civil War has boomed over the last decade, scholars have focused on mainline and evangelical Protestants who dominated the country’s landscape both numerically and in social and intellectual importance. Civil War scholars seeking to understand the growing yet small body of Roman Catholic Americans (perhaps 10 percent of the total population in 1860) have faced a number of obstacles, from a basic ignorance of Catholic archives and their rich records to an extreme paucity of published primary sources. Thus Patrick J. Hayes’s new edition of the diary of Father James Sheeran, CSsR (1819–1881) is a welcome effort to make a major primary source on wartime Catholic ... Read More

  • Public Theology and The Global Common Good: The Contribution of David
Hollenbach, SJ ed. by Kevin Ahern, et al. (review)
    • Abstract: For those who do not know David Hollenbach and his work, this collection is an excellent introduction. For those who do know him, these essays are a substantive engagement with his ideas that enlarge and carry them forward. The four editors joined with 14 other of Hollenbach’s former doctoral students to write these essays to honor him for the many significant contributions he has made to Catholic social teaching, in particular his writings on justice as participation, human rights, the global common good, and public theology, which topics also serve as the four section headings of the book. In the Foreword, Margaret Farley, RSM notes two core realities in his thought: the ontological reality of the dignity ... Read More

  • Christianity, Social Justice, and the Japanese American Incarceration
during World War II by Anne M. Blankenship (review)
    • Abstract: When in early 1942 the United States Army implemented President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 by assembling and then relocating West Coast residents of Japanese descent (Nikkei), it uprooted the 20 to 25 percent who were Christian along with the majority who were nominally Buddhist. In Christianity, Social Justice, and the Japanese American Incarceration during World War II, Anne M. Blankenship tells for the first time the interrelated stories of the wartime adjustments forged by the Protestant and Catholic missionary institutions that ministered to almost all of the Nikkei Christian population and the religious cultures that the Christian Nikkei created in the internment camps. She is ... Read More

  • Catholic Literature and Film: Incarnational Love and Suffering by Nancy
           Enright (review)
    • Abstract: If one were setting out to identify the heart of the Christian faith in general, and of the Catholic tradition in particular, one might very well start with the Incarnation of the Son of God. The Gospel of John opens, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God” (1:1), and it later adds, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us . . .” (1:14). This incarnational emphasis is repeated throughout the New Testament, and it became central to the writings of the Apostolic Fathers and their successors. As Pope Clement I explained around the turn of the second century: “Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Sceptre of the majesty of God, did not come in the pomp of pride or arrogance, although He might ... • Abortion, Religious Freedom, and Catholic Politics by James Hitchcock
           (review)
    • Abstract: Abortion has been a central public policy issue over the past half century, whose importance has only been reinforced by recent debates over the Affordable Care Act and the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court. Hitchcock’s text provides a very perplexing narrative on how both the Catholic Left and the Catholic Right in the United States have downplayed this issue during the very time period that the pro-life movement, by his reckoning, has been a very salient political movement centered on a moral issue. Hitchcock argues that from the 1930s to the 1960s Catholic moral and social teaching was compatible with the prevailing social and economic policies emerging from the New Deal. ... Read More

  • The Wounded Angel: Fiction and the Religious Imagination by Paul Lakeland
           (review)
    • Abstract: Paul Lakeland has written four books on Vatican II, and his new book takes up the council’s teaching that while the church has much to teach the world, it has much to learn from the world; divine grace is to be found everywhere – including secular literary fiction. As a teaching theologian, Lakeland has often employed novels in his undergraduate classes at Fairfield University and finds that imaginative narratives speak to readers across the spectrum – from “Nones” to the devout: “To the person of faith, fiction supports the love of the world as it is and contradicts the simplistic separation of the sacred and profane. To the searcher or the agnostic, fiction teases with intimations of a beyond that may be ... Read More

  • Collaborative Parish Leadership: Contexts, Models, Theology ed. by William
           A. Clark, Daniel Gast (review)
    • Abstract: In 2005 the USCCB published Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord: A Resource for Guiding the Development of Lay Ecclesial Ministry which emphasized that the ordained and lay staff are co-workers, that is, collaborators. However, even the most casual observer would recognize that this goal is seldom achieved in most parishes. The reasons are many, but up until now they have not been systematically studied. Now comes Collaborative Parish Leadership: Contexts, Models, Theology. This edited volume is a report on Project INSPIRE (“Identify, Nurture, and Sustain Pastoral Imagination through Resources for Excellence”), a partnership between the Archdiocese of Chicago and Loyola University, Chicago that ... • Abandoned by the Vatican: My Clandestine Journey to Support Secret Priests
Behind the Iron Curtain by Jack Doherty (review)
    • Abstract: There are some curiosities to note about this book from the outset. It is not a normal 442-page book. The type is large and double spaced, having about 250 words per page, and so it reads quickly. It is a self-published book, and this is a second curiosity. Such authors take upon themselves producing the text digitally, proofreading it themselves, and then marketing it online. (CreateSpace, an Amazon Company, helps in this endeavor.) There are surely expenses an author assumes in self-marketing a paperback before royalties might roll in but I could not discover them. Third, the title betrays a harshness, often severe, toward institutional Roman Catholicism that only becomes evident in the second portion of ... Read More

  • Realizing the Distinctive University: Vision and Values, Strategy and
Culture by Mark William Roche (review)
    • Abstract: Mark William Roche, the Reverend Edmund P. Joyce, CSC, Professor of German Language and Literature and concurrent Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, served as its Dean of Arts and Letters from 1997–2008. Realizing the Distinctive University is the third book in which he explores the mission of a Catholic university. His first, a slim volume, The Intellectual Appeal of Catholicism and the Idea of a Catholic University (University of Notre Dame Press, 2003) argues for the intellectual richness of the Catholic tradition. His Why Choose the Liberal Arts (University of Notre Dame Press, 2010) makes a compelling and common sense case for studying the liberal arts. His Realizing the Distinctive ... Read More

  • Remembering Joseph M. Gambescia: A Man of Science and Faith
    • Abstract: “Science does not prove anything; it can only disprove something.” This is how my father, Joseph M. Gambescia, responded each time he was asked, “Is the man of the Shroud of Turin Jesus Christ'” The question would typically arise following his popular, 90-minute presentations on the shroud—surely one of the most peculiar artifacts in western history—which included physical description, archeological history, medical conjecture, scientific treatment, and discussion of the religious significance of the object. The question would also come after long interviews with journalists and students from all disciplines and professions who sought answers to the many mysteries of the Shroud of Turin. My father ...
