  • “St. Gemma is My Girl!”: Devotional Practices among Millennial
Catholics and the Making of Contemporary Catholic Saints
    • Abstract: I spotted Mia across the busy student center because she was carrying a bright pink shoulder bag. Our first meeting was on the college campus in the midwestern United States where Mia was just starting her third year as a Catholic missionary. This party-girl-turned missionary in front of me had carefully done make-up, and long, blond hair. Mia tucked her bedazzled iPhone into her bag and smiled brightly. She was twenty-four years old and wore a white, plastic rosary as a bracelet, which, she later told me with pride, had touched several holy sites in Rome. Mia, as I would learn in the ensuing months, was well known in the missionary network I traversed during my fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork. Her fellow ... Read More

  • Chiniquy’s Lincoln: Aiming Booth’s Bullet at the Roman
           Catholic Church
    • Abstract: In the midst of an election contest, an ex-priest’s conspiracy theory about a deceased American president became the possible basis upon which a ballot should be cast – or not cast. The October 31, 1890, edition of The Los Angeles Herald described the city as “deluged” with leaflets declaring that Abraham Lincoln’s assassination had been orchestrated “through the machinations of Jesuit priests, who were also responsible for our own civil war.”1 Intent on dissuading voters from electing Catholics, the pamphlets detailed the alleged plot and then listed Catholics, both Democrat and Republican, running for office. Though “a cock and bull story” that was “too silly for any sane man or woman’s attention,” the Herald ... Read More

  • Passing the Barry Statue Bill: First Memorial of a Catholic American
Revolutionary Hero in the Nation’s Capital
    • Abstract: On Saturday, March 12, 1904, Republican Representative Michael E. Driscoll of New York rose to address his fellow congressmen. In the midst of lengthy discussions and legislative decisions on issues as diverse as Post Office appropriations, statehood for the territories of Arizona and Oklahoma, and the needs of Alaskans,1 Driscoll presented a bill to honor the Revolutionary War maritime hero, John Barry.2 Since 1902, he had been campaigning for passage of the Barry Statue Bill to honor this neglected and overlooked American hero. With rhetorical precision, the Irish-American Catholic congressman cast the Commodore’s life in the heroic mode. Like many who came to America, Barry “was poor … he did not take an active ... • Loyal Protestants and Dangerous Papists: Maryland and the Politics of
Religion in the English Atlantic, 1630-1690 by Antoinette Sutto (review)
    • Abstract: Virginia has long overshadowed Maryland in the historiography of the seventeenth-century English Chesapeake. Scholars of the 1970s and 1980s interested in Maryland’s social and economic structures depicted a colony not unlike the rest of the region. Yet its unique religious politics have always intrigued historians: chartered by a Protestant kingdom, ruled by Catholic lords, and inhabited by Protestant settlers, the colony’s atypical “confessional arrangement” of religious toleration would have seemed strange from an early modern perspective (2).In Loyal Protestants and Dangerous Papists: Maryland and the Politics of Religion in the English Atlantic, 1630-1690, Antoinette Sutto analyzes the political controversies ... • Gravissimum Educationis: Golden Opportunities in American Catholic
Education 50 Years After Vatican II ed. by Gerald M. Cattaro and Charles
           J. Russo (review)
    • Abstract: “Beautiful indeed and of great importance is the vocation of all those who aid parents in fulfilling their duties and who, as representatives of the human community, undertake the task of education in the schools. This vocation demands special qualities of the mind and heart, very careful preparation, and continuing readiness to renew and to adapt” (vii). This prescient passage from the only document on education to emerge from the Second Vatican Council is the epigraph for this interesting and informative collection of scholarly articles compiled by Gerald M. Cattaro and Charles J. Russo, two leading authorities on the foundations and administration of Catholic schools. The first three chapters of the book provide ... Read More

    • Abstract: Without a doubt, the most notable name in articulating a free-market version of Catholic social teaching in the United States over the past three decades has been Michael Novak. In this volume, Novak with Paul Adams, a social work scholar at the University of Hawaii, recasts social justice as a virtue to be practiced and Adams then makes applications to the practice of social work.Novak and Adams seek to promote a nonpartisan articulation of Catholic social teaching and specifically, one that moves beyond such binaries as conscience v. social justice, individualism v. collectivism, charity v. justice, informal associations v. state-run programs, and subsidiarity v. solidarity. Unfortunately, Novak’s reflections ... Read More

  • Evangelicals and Catholics Together at Twenty: Vital Statements on
Contested Topics ed. by Timothy George and Thomas G. Guarino (review)
    • Abstract: Whether this collection marks the end of the Evangelicals and Catholics Together collaboration or will serve as a platform for further work I do not know, but I find myself at the last of the pages hoping that they will go on meeting, studying, and writing together. Before this “unofficial” collaboration began in 1994, the abyss between American evangelicals and Catholics seemed unbridgeable. I had my hopes, but they were mine and not general among the intellectuals in the two populations. Some Catholics of the left and even some of the right were not looking forward to collaboration with the offspring of American fundamentalists. Nor were many hard-line Calvinist fans of the Reformation dying to jump into bed with ... Read More

  • Following Father Chiniquy: Immigration, Religious Schism, and Social
Change in Nineteenth-Century Illinois by Caroline B. Brettell (review)
    • Abstract: On opening my review copy, I was struck with trepidation when I read that the author had a family connection to the subject. Although a Canadian and a professor of anthropology at Southern Methodist University in the United States, Caroline Brettell traces her family to French Huguenots who were closely connected to the family and work of the former Roman Catholic priest turned Protestant minister, Charles Chiniquy. When she claimed that the work was something of a homecoming for her (p. xiii), I feared a work of one-sided filiopiety.Happily, the author has steered clear of the debates about the truth or falsehood of the many usually (but not entirely) Catholic accusations of immorality and fraud surrounding ... • Henry George and the Crisis of Inequality: Progress and Poverty in the
Gilded Age by Edward T. O’Donnell (review)
    • Abstract: There is a reason Henry George is so often mentioned within scholarship on the Gilded Age, but so rarely given much attention. His vision of building a better republic by reforming tax policy defies many of the categories which we erect around the period. Was he a socialist? Yes, he believed in the nationalization of land, but no, he did not challenge capitalism or the private ownership of production. Far from encouraging “class consciousness,” he encouraged the building of a classless society. Was he a Liberal? Yes, he believed that the state was best positioned to provide for the flourishing of the people, but no, he believed in otherwise limited government. He aligned himself with “producers,” such as the ... Read More

  • Defenders of the Unborn: The Pro-Life Movement Before Roe v. Wade by
           Daniel K. Williams (review)
    • Abstract: Daniel K. Williams has written a superbly researched work of historical retrieval. He recounts the untold story of progressive pro-life efforts to defend the unborn that began decades before Roe v. Wade. It was embodied in a New Deal-Catholic alliance to support the health and welfare of women, children, families, workers, and the poor. The pro-life struggle grew and developed into a saga that enlisted many: physicians, legislators, Catholic clergy, volunteer lay groups, Protestant leaders, lobbyists, and legal professionals. The players interacted in efforts to shape public opinion and change the laws.Williams’s stated purpose is to detail the ins-and-outs of the pro-life movement, and it’s obvious that his own ... • Bonds of Union: Religion, Race, and Politics in a Civil War Borderland by
           Bridget Ford (review)
    • Abstract: Bridget Ford’s compelling, well-researched book places the Ohio River Valley, especially Cincinnati and Louisville, at the center of the history of the Civil War Era. In her study from the 1830s to 1865, Ford uncovers diverse “bonds of union,” a phrase penned by Abraham Lincoln in 1854. As black and white, Protestant and Catholic residents in Kentucky and Ohio interacted in social, commercial, and religious settings, they created persistent bonds along and across fissures of religion, race, and politics. Taken in total, these bonds maintained the Union loyalties of this divided region, hastened emancipation, and kindled hope of equal citizenship. Through Ford’s vivid portraits and elegant prose, her arguments about ... Read More

  • Refuge in the Lord: Catholics, Presidents & the Politics of Immigration,
1981-2013 by Lawrence J. McAndrews (review)
    • Abstract: In Refuge in the Lord: Catholics, Presidents & the Politics of Immigration, 1981-2013, Lawrence McAndrews provides a comprehensive, richly-detailed survey and a reflective discussion of Catholic engagement with the national politics of immigration in recent decades. As he points out, while there is no shortage of books on immigration policy and even a literature on Catholic teaching on immigration, this is the first book to “connect the roles of church and state, by examining the interactions between the presidents who have executed American immigration policy and the Catholics who have endorsed, implemented, opposed, and obstructed it” (2). In the course of his study, McAndrews demonstrates how that relationship ... Read More

  • Excommunicated from the Union: How the Civil War Created a Separate
Catholic America by William B. Kurtz (review)
    • Abstract: American Catholicism and the Civil War each have a robust historiography, however these are historiographies that rarely intersect. William B. Kurtz’s Excommunicated by the Union: How the Civil War Created a Separate Catholic America is one of the few books that tells the story of American Catholics during the Civil War. Beginning with the Mexican-American War and concluding with Reconstruction, Kurtz’s work focuses on the Border States and the North and utilizes Catholic newspapers, the writings of the clergy and elite lay Catholics, and the ways in which Catholics remembered the war. Although the Civil War provided an auspicious opportunity for American Catholics to prove their patriotism, Excommunicated by the ... Read More

  • Catholic Cultures: How Parishes can Respond to the Changing Face of
           Catholicism by Patricia Wittberg (review)
    • Abstract: On a warm September day in 2015, Pope Francis spoke to a large crowd gathered in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, considered by many to be the birthplace of the United States of America. This symbolic location called attention to provisions in the Constitution that foster religious pluralism. While paying tribute to the past, his remarks also served to illuminate the changing demographics of the country, and also to the changes within the composition of the American Catholic Church. Pope Francis exhorted Hispanic immigrants specifically, saying, “Do not be discouraged by whatever challenges and hardships you face. I ask you not to forget that, like those who came here before you, you bring many gifts to ... Read More

  • Frank Sinatra and the Hoodlum Priest
    • Abstract: A little over fifty years ago a remarkable event linked Frank Sinatra to a fascinating Jesuit: Father Dismas Clark, The Hoodlum Priest. On Sunday evening June 20, 1965, Frank Sinatra gave a concert in St. Louis with his Rat Pack buddies Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Also performing were Johnny Carson, Trini Lopez, and the Count Basie Orchestra, led by Quincy Jones. The show, called the Frank Sinatra Spectacular, had been organized by the local Teamsters Union President, Harold Gibbons, to raise money for Dismas House, the first half-way house for ex-convicts in the country.1 Dismas House helped ex-cons become productive members of society. The Teamsters also lent support by giving jobs to the men at Dismas ... Read More
