  • Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures:
    • Abstract: The editorial board of Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures stands in solidarity with Black students, teachers, librarians, academics, and their communities. While the current wave of #BlackLivesMatter protests was sparked by the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and George Floyd, systemic racism has a long history in the United States. Rooted in the transatlantic slave trade, it has taken many forms throughout the history of the nation, including lynching, police brutality, the War on Drugs, mass incarceration, the redlining of predominantly African American neighbourhoods, and other forms of systemic oppression. Systemic racism also has a long history in Canada and is similarly rooted in ... Read More

  • Introduction to Special Section: Youngsters 2: On the Cultures of Children
           and Youth
    • Abstract: The Association for Research in Cultures of Young People (ARCYP) hosted their second Youngsters conference on May 9–12, 2019, at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario—situated on the “Dish With One Spoon Territory” of the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Supported by a SSHRC Connection Grant as well as funds from Ryerson University, the University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University, the University of Winnipeg, and the University of Lethbridge, Youngsters 2: On the Cultures of Children and Youth (2019) was a field-defining event that explored the intersections between childhood and youth studies as interdisciplinary fields of scholarship and community engagement. • “God Only Knows What It’s Doing to Our Children’s Brains”: A
Closer Look at Internet Addiction Discourse
    • Abstract: Since the commercialization of the internet in the mid-1990s, a recurring topic in media and policy discourses has been the impact of digital technology on children and young people (Katz). As early as 1993, an article in The Washington Post warned against the addictive qualities of computers for schoolchildren (Schwartz), and in 1999, a content analysis produced by the Media Awareness Network, a media literacy organization, on Canadian newspaper coverage of issues related to the internet and children revealed that, overall, the press presented the internet as a site where more problems (almost sixty percent) than benefits (almost forty percent) existed. Problems identified by the study included content such as ... Read More

  • Girls Playing at Soldiers: Destabilizing the Masculinity of War Play in
           Georgian Britain
    • Abstract: George Morland’s painting Children Playing at Soldiers (see fig. 1) was quickly published in 1788 by J. R. Smith and had “great and lasting” popularity for its endearing and accurate portrayal of childhood (Gilbey and Cuming 71, 203–204). A brief glance confirms the existing historiography of British children’s war play.1 Boys of seemingly varied class background are loosely arrayed in a line, instructed by the eldest boy in the nicest dress. They wear makeshift conical caps, carry wooden weapons, and their regimental colours are comprised of a piece of silk tied to a stick. Most of the girls in the picture are passively watching from the periphery. First impressions suggest that this is boys playing at ... Read More

  • “Girls Don’t Like Cars, They Like ‘Girl’ Cars”: Kindergarten
Children’s Conceptions of Gender and Play Materials
    • Abstract: Play is a central facet of childhood. When children engage in play, they do so with their entire beings as “it is a somatic, sensual, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual phenomenon” (Russell, qtd. in Kilvington and Wood 14). Children play in their home environments, in their childcare and educational institutions, and in public spaces. They play in solitude, with adults, and with their peers. With play also comes play materials: the actual tools and items that children utilize during play activities. Play materials and toys are salient to children’s lives as they foster pretend and imaginative play, enhance cognition, develop social skills (Dinella and Weisgram 254), and facilitate aspects of physical ... • Those that Fly: Michaela DePrince and the Transnational Politics of Rescue
    • Abstract: “Before I was the ‘vile’ and ‘chilly’ Odile, I was Michaela DePrince, and before I was Michaela, I was Mabinty Bangura, and this is the story of my flight from war orphan to ballerina” (4). These are the opening lines of Taking Flight, a young adult memoir told from the perspective of former African war-orphan-turned-ballerina Michaela DePrince, co-written with her white adoptive mother Elaine DePrince. Surviving the civil war in Sierra Leone (1991–2002), travelling to the United States, and thriving in the exclusive and competitive world of ballet, DePrince powerfully embodies a success story of transnational adoption, much like the highly publicized stories of such celebrities as Angelina Jolie, who made the ... • Negotiating the Hyphens in a Culture of Surveillance: Embodied
Surveillance and the Representation of Muslim Adolescence in Anglophone YA
           Fiction
    • Abstract: Contemporary young adult (YA) fiction is widely lauded for challenging societal norms and for representing diverse subjectivities. Texts operate within and in response to a growing culture of surveillance, and this has led to the emergence of an increasing number of counter-narratives that challenge dominant social, political, and racial norms through authentic depictions of young adults. These texts have given rise to the #OwnVoices movement. They function as artifacts of society’s post-9/11 culture of liquid surveillance, centralizing the positioning of Muslim adolescent bodies in a state of hypervisibility and liminality. Contemporary cultural surveillance theorists have embraced the increasing fluidity of ... Read More

  • Palestinian Children’s Literature: An Overview
    • Abstract: This essay offers a general historical overview of Palestinian children’s literature since 1948, the year when the whole Palestinian people ceased living in Palestine. After the establishment of the State of Israel, many Palestinians were either evacuated and driven from their homeland or chose to leave. Critics have divided Palestinian literature since that time into three categories: Palestinian literature in the diaspora, Palestinian literature in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and Palestinian literature inside Israel. Children’s literature is a part of each of these Palestinian literatures, and I discuss its development in what follows. After the Catastrophe (Nakba) in 1948 and the establishment of the State of ... • On Being Haunted by King: An Elegy for Queer Youth
    • Abstract: A photo has haunted me for more than a decade. It’s the photo of Lawrence King, murdered by a fellow middle school student, on February 12, 2008, at E. O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, California. In the photo, I see King, wearing a purple, white, black, and teal patterned sweater, hand raised showing off a caterpillar, hair neatly styled, a slight smile, perhaps a childish smirk, eyes looking maybe just past the camera. A snapshot of a middle schooler in the midst of living and learning. This photo circulated widely in the media after King’s murder. There’s another that sometimes merges with this one in my memory—a school photo, most likely. But the haunting photo was the one that introduced me to the murdered ... Read More

  • Mille Pompons! Fantômette, the Famous and Unknown Schoolgirl
           Superhero of France
    • Abstract: North American girls who grow up reading English-language literature have a number of adventurous young heroines to admire and emulate: Jo March from Little Women, Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables, Nancy Drew from the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series, Katniss from The Hunger Games, as well as Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and many others. These literary girls and women are bright, talented, and push the envelope of socially acceptable behaviour. They have careers, solve crimes, do magic, and live as full a life as their male literary counterparts. Girls who grow up reading French-language literature do not have as many models to choose from, and many of those are translations ... Read More

  • Cross-Border Bodies: How to Fit When Your Body Does Not
    • Abstract: The societal and literary understanding of the non-normative body has evolved throughout history, from monstrous abnormality to corporeal diversity. The material turn adopted in recent years in several research scopes has contributed powerfully to the shift (Nikolajeva 132–33). The emergence of new cross-border bodies in children’s literature results from this change of paradigm.Bodily borders depend on the pre-existence of a normal body. Power structures configure it through medical discourse, literature, and identity narratives, among others. A range of interrelated bodily markers, such as weight, height, skin tone, sex, or form, is used to judge the bodies. Sameness is the pattern. Therefore, any deviation is ... Read More

  • Where Are the Girls' Locating Girlhood in Game Studies
    • Abstract: Carolyn M. Cunningham’s Games Girls Play: Contexts of Girls and Video Games paints a picture of how girls within the United States interact with, relate to, and understand video games at large and within their personal lives. The book works to better understand the relationship between gender constructions and video games. Cunningham takes a media ecology approach to the different contexts in which girls in elementary, middle, and high school consume and interact with video games within the United States.Cunningham builds on Adrienne Shaw’s Gaming at the Edge: Sexuality and Gender at the Margins of Gamer Culture, which focuses on marginalized populations of gamers and their relationships with video games in their ... • Detours of Growth
    • Abstract: Throughout this curious, thoughtful, and provocative text, Lisa Farley asks us to consider how notions of normalization in theories of human development effectively condemn the very children they purportedly seek to help. Through regulatory and repressive discourses of social control, children who fall outside of normalized categories are often interpreted as fundamentally deficient and defective, and in dire need of cure and correction. As the title of this book makes clear, Childhood beyond Pathology interrupts this straightforward line of reasoning that links “normalcy with wellness and difference with pathology” (Farley 119) and instead develops a psychoanalytically informed theory of childhood that understands ... • “Always Becoming”: Posthuman Subjectivity in Young Adult
           Fiction
    • Abstract: Anita Tarr and Donna R. White’s edited collection, Posthumanism in Young Adult Fiction: Finding Humanity in a Posthuman World, interrogates the extent to which post-humanism is conveyed and explored in young adult (YA) literature. The collection is organized into four parts and comprises twelve chapters. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines, including education and pedagogy studies, media and cultural studies, and English, with specializations in British and American literature, Victorian literature, and children’s and YA literature. Tarr and White deftly frame the work with an introduction that succinctly positions how posthumanism is defined within the context of the collection, and they provide a ... Read More

  • Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral' Nordic Ecocritical Approaches to
           Children’s Texts
    • Abstract: Ecocritical Perspectives on Children’s Texts and Cultures revisits the connections between cultural constructions of “nature” and “child.” The collection asks to what extent texts use traditional tropes “to place the child in an idyllic and romantic relation to nature” (6) and whether they reflect and engage with contemporary environmental challenges. Along with the expected analyses of picture books and novels, Nina Goga, Lykke Guanio-Uluru, Bjørg Oddrun Hallås, and Aslaug Nyrnes’s collection features a chapter on picture-book apps and another on a television series, as well as a pleasing amount of attention to illustrated poetry from several traditions. It focuses on contemporary Nordic texts but also includes ... Read More

  • Toward a Transformative Education within Youth Media Production
    • Abstract: In our contemporary society, a young person may enter the education system already competent in digital literacies and influenced by the problematic world of social media. Korina M. Jocson, however, through a “connective analysis” (3), presents the case for understanding how young people are using new digital technologies to affect and transform their educations. Youth Media Matters: Participatory Cultures and Literacies in Education examines how young people are creating, sharing, and distributing their stories and why those stories are critical to all of society. Jocson’s inquiry begins with the following question: “How do youth media shape culture, and vice versa” (4)' Over the course of her book, she answers ... Read More
