  • Note of Appreciation
    • Abstract: On behalf of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, I would like to thank Tun Mohammed Hanif bin Omar, who stepped down as President of the Society with effect from September 2016. He became President in January, 2007, succeeding the late Datuk Abdullah Ali. Tun Hanif, who in his professional career was a distinguished Inspector General of Police, studied history at the University of Malaya in Singapore under the then Raffles Professor of History, C Northcote Parkinson. His ongoing interest in Malaysian history was evident in his contributions to Council meetings, and his strong backing for the Society’s publication program. We thank him warmly for his wise contributions to ... Read More

  • Historiography and Shifting Interpretations of the Death of Sultan Mahmud
           Syah II
    • Abstract: In 1699 Sultan Mahmud Syah II, the ruler of Johor, was murdered. The death of the childless Sultan ended a line of sovereignty that stretched from Johor back through the Melaka sultanate and possibly to Srivijaya. In its aftermath, the rulers of Johor had to contend with shifting loyalties and new migrant groups—particularly Minangkabau and Bugis—in eastern Sumatra and the Riau Islands that resulted in changes in cultures, societies and political leadership that still influence the region today. This act of regicide, thus, can be considered to be one of the key events in Malay history, as new rulers assumed power while important tenets of the society were violated, beginning a process in which other groups began ... • The Career of Francis James Bernard: Nepotism and Patronage in Early
           Singapore
    • Abstract: The part played by minor officials in colonial Singapore can be overlooked when the long narrative of the nation’s history is considered, particularly in the case of those who incurred the displeasure of more senior figures. This was especially apparent in Singapore before it was ceded to Britain when nepotism and patronage made and unmade many appointments. One individual whose career was driven by those personal forces was Francis James Bernard, who arrived at Singapore in 1819 and spent eight years in the young settlement. Although Thomas Stamford Raffles appointed him to administrative posts and to his Town Committee, he ultimately turned against Bernard, calling him a ‘low character’.1 In 1960 Carl ... Read More

  • Borneo History: Time for a New Look?
    • Abstract: In 1968 Britain’s Prime Minister Harold Wilson announced the withdrawal of British troops from major military bases ‘east of Suez’. This historically momentous decision had been preceded some weeks earlier by the devaluation of sterling as a reserve currency. Apart from a few lingering remnants of empire, formal European colonialism in South-east Asia had come to an end. The former ‘British Borneo territories’ of North Borneo and Sarawak were already part of an established Malaysian state while Brunei was well on the way to full independence. How is it, then, that half a century later local leaders feel the need to urge a fresh look at the history of the Borneo states, a history they consider to be still ... Read More

  • Former Japanese Soldiers Who Joined Communist Guerrillas in Malaya:
           Reconstructing an Elusive History
    • Abstract: In December 1989 the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) signed separate peace agreements with the Malaysian and Thai governments ending decades of armed struggle.1 Following the agreements, guerrilla fighters came out of the jungle and either lived in ‘Peace Villages’ in southern Thailand or returned ‘home’ to Malaysia. According to the announcement, there were 1,188 guerrilla members at that time, of which 494 were Malaysian and 670 Thai. In addition, there were 2 Japanese. In fact, the presence of 2 Japanese was already known. On 19 June 1975 the Malaysian Minister of Internal Affairs, Ghazali Shafie, had announced that there were 2,054 communist guerrillas, comprising 875 Malaysians, 1,177 Thais and 2 Japanese.2 ... • Malayan Women during the Japanese Occupation
    • Abstract: Stories of cruelty and hardship during the Japanese occupation of Malaya are well known but there is very little information on the relationship of the Japanese authorities and local women within the context of the Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere. The 1931 census of British Malaya showed 1,787,323 women in a total population of 4,385,346,2 and Japanese propaganda paid a great deal of attention to women. Archival records, memoirs and oral history archives offer opportunities for research on women during the occupation, while wartime newspapers like the Syonan Shimbun3 highlight Japanese attention to women as a group. These sources give an idea of how Malayan women (Malays, Chinese, Indians and others) ... Read More

  • Nation and Conservation: Postcolonial Water Narratives in Singapore
           Rituals
    • Abstract: What is the role of environment, especially water, in national biography? Especially in a postcolonial nation-state like Singapore? Looking at some environmental themes in national rituals in Singapore in 2015, from the March tributes to Lee Kuan Yew to the August National Day celebration of Singapore’s fifty years of independence, how did intense articulations of postcolonial themes, of sacrifice, national needs, internal rights debates, and international struggles give way to green—and blue—political themes of environmental good, rational pleasure, and global futures? To bring together analysis of meaning and power, engaging both ritual and history, I consider this history within the global field of what ... Read More

  • The Word Bugis
    • Abstract: Journals once routinely included Notes & Queries. These communications have mostly gone online, but in a nod to a distinguished tradition, JMBRAS occasionally publishes enquiries directed to members of the Society. For the current issue, there are two queries addressed to members of the Society. I have a query regarding the name Bugis (the question is prompted by an inquiry from Oxford English Dictionary.) In their own language the Bugis are known as Wugi or Ugi. A Bugis informant writes ‘‘most of the Bugis still refer to themselves as Ugi or ‘to ugi’, which can be translated as ‘orang Bugis’ (Bugis people). It can be assumed that the English form ‘Bugis’ is taken from the Malay ‘Bugis’. But can anyone ... Read More

  • Who wrote A Yellow Sleuth?
    • Abstract: While fossicking around in the basement of a bookstore in Paris a number of years ago, I came across a ratty looking copy of a book entitled Souvenirs d’un Agent Malais. The author, named as Nor Nalla, was described as a Detective-Sergeant in the Federated Malay States Police. The book was published in Paris in 1934 by the Payot publishing house, and was a translation from an English original. I thought I knew the literature on Malaya in the 1930s fairly well, but I’d never heard of this. Back in Malaysia I located a photocopy of the English publication in the library of Universiti Sains Malaysia. Entitled A Yellow Sleuth: Being the Autobiography of “Nor Nalla”, the book was published in 1931 by ... Read More

  • The Establishment of Singapore
    • Abstract: To the Editor. Sir: The widow of Sir T. Stamford Raffles having claimed the sole and exclusive merit for her husband of having established the new and thriving settlement o£ Singapore, I consider myself called upon to endeavour to prove to the world that I had at least a large share in forming that establishment, having recommended to Government, as far back as the year 1816, the formation of some new settlement in the Straits of Malacca to the eastward of that town, and lying immediately in the track of our Indiamen and other ships engaged in the China and eastern trade; and having, when commanding at Malacca (previous to any treaty being formed by the Rajah of Johore with the Netherlands ... • The Singapore Water Supply
    • Abstract: Editor’s Note: Singapore’s water supply, discussed in this issue by Prof. Martha Kaplan, has been a contentious issue since the early years of the colony. A comprehensive account of the efforts to meet the demand for water in Singapore can be found in Brenda S.A. Yeoh’s book Contesting Space in Colonial Singapore: Power Relations and the Urban Built Environment (Oxford University Press, 1996; re-issued by Singapore University Press, now NUS Press, 2003), pp. 175–90. The following excerpts from Colonial Office records provide some intriguing details from early discussions around providing Singapore with a reliable supply of fresh water. In the 1850s the government did not consider ... Read More

  • Conversations with Tunku Abdul Rahman by Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad (review)
    • Abstract: To those familiar with the modern history and politics of Malaysia, the author of this latest book on the first prime minister and Father of Malaysia appears a most intriguing—yet qualified—person to write about Tunku Abdul Rahman. The late Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad (Dollah to his friends and close acquaintances) was a personal adviser to Tun Abdul Razak Malaysia’s second prime minister, and later a minister in the latter’s cabinet. Abdullah Ahmad was both an active participant and a close-range observer of Malaysian politics unfolding since the 1960s. The fact that Tunku Abdul Rahman agreed to be interviewed by Dollah who, in Tunku’s mind, was the man who was responsible for all the humiliations and black–ball ... Read More

  • Nature Contained: Environmental Histories of Singapore ed. by Timothy P.
           Barnard (review)
    • Abstract: This collection of essays consists of an Introduction by the Editor and nine scholarly contributions by authors (including the editor) who have the credentials that qualify them to write the chapters. The book’s argument centres on how Singapore’s location in the Malay Archipelago, a region of extraordinary biodiversity, historically influenced the economic, political and social history of the Malay/Indonesian realm (Nusantara and Malay Archipelago). The contributors’ focus on environmental issues against the backdrop of European and Asian capitalist development and the Age of New Imperialism underlies the rationale for Singapore’s incorporation into the world economy and global trade. This approach provides ... Read More

  • Malaysia’s Original People: Past, Present and Future of the Orang Asli
           ed. by Kirk Endicott (review)
    • Abstract: This impressive collection is fittingly dedicated to two pioneers in the development of Orang Asli studies—Robert Denton and Geoffrey Benjamin. As editor, Kirk Endicott (himself highly respected in this field) has assembled an exceptional group of contributors, all of whom bring specialized knowledge to the project. The book is distinguished by its inclusion of scholars of various backgrounds and different generations, including some who have retired from the field but whose essays remind us of the cumulative changes experienced by the current generation of Orang Asli. Its chronological depth and research coverage mean that Malaysia’s Original People should be of interest beyond Malaysia and Southeast Asia ... Read More

  • Globalized Muslim Youth in the Asia Pacific: Popular Culture in Singapore
and Sydney by Kamaludeen Mohamed Nasir (review)
    • Abstract: This book examines Muslim youth engagement with popular culture in Sydney and Singapore, two global cities of the Asia Pacific region. The author skilfully weaves together data from textual sources, cyberspace social networking websites, and ethnographic observation and interviews to produce a comparative transnational study of Muslim youth involvement in hip-hop, tattooing, and cultural consumption. Globalized Muslim Youth in the Asia Pacific situates Muslim youth in a global perspective without losing sight of the significant effects of state policies and projects on their responses in local contexts. It is a sociological study that draws upon contemporary theories of popular culture, youth and ... Read More

  • The Incubus of Intervention: Conflicting Indonesia Strategies of John F.
Kennedy and Allen Dulles by Greg Poulgrain (review)
    • Abstract: The relations between the United State of America and the Republic of Indonesia have a long history. A number of works give attention to the New Order regime in which the United States played a significant role in Indonesian politics and economy. This book by Greg Poulgrain examines US strategies toward Indonesian affairs during the period 1950–60s. It was a very intensive period in the history of Indonesia. It also witnessed tense international rivalry between the socialist bloc under the Soviet Union and the capitalist bloc of the United States. While most studies on this period of Indonesian history have focused on internal factors within Indonesia, Poulgrain has introduced a new perspective based on the ... Read More

  • Ethnic Relations in Malaysia: Harmony & Conflict by Syed Husin Ali
           (review)
    • Abstract: We know that conflicts and killings occur when one group tries to use race or ethnicity in order to perpetrate its racial or ethnic superiority and control over economic and political power. But we do not know of any easy solutions to these problems. Nevertheless, in the context of Malaysia and perhaps in many other countries as well, the establishment of social justice and democracy can go a long way towards improving the situation. By social justice, I mean a more equitable distribution of wealth. By democracy, I mean broader civil liberties, greater freedom and more people’s participation in the decision making process In five concise and precise sentences Syed Husin Ali captures, identifies, and ... • The Malayan Emergency: Essays on a Small Distant War by Souchou Yao
           (review)
    • Abstract: According to author Souchou Yao, The Malayan Emergency: Essays on a Small Distant War is an attempt to present the Malayan Emergency (1948–60) in a wide context. The book contains nine chapters. It begins with a chapter on the British Empire, followed by a chapter on communism entitled ‘On Communism; New Person in a New Era’. The two subsequent chapters discuss imperial policing and British counterinsurgency and the Revolutionary War. In the fifth and sixth chapters the author concentrates on British propaganda, strategies and approaches during the Malayan Emergency. Discussion of the leftists, the most crucial group involved in the insurgency, is delivered in the seventh chapter. In line with the author’s ... Read More
