  • Nicholas Tarling (1931–2017)
    • Abstract: As this issue of JMBRAS was nearly ready to go to press, news arrived of the death of Professor Nicholas Tarling. A Life Member of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Nick devoted his life to the study of Asia, and particularly of Southeast Asia. He worked in the field of diplomatic history and international relations, and his publications drew on exhaustive research in Britain’s National Archives. He was also one of the unsung people who invest time reviewing other peoples’ manuscripts, writing reviews that were astute, critical when they needed to be, but also generous and encouraging. In retirement, he announced that his savings were more than sufficient for his needs, and sponsored a ... Read More

  • Words of Majesty: A Brief History of Royal Correspondence between England
           and Asia, 1600–1858
    • Abstract: Historians recognize that English diplomacy with Asia increased from the seventeenth century onwards, yet conclude it was sporadic, generally being handled by mercantile or military officials on the spot.1 Although not inaccurate, such an interpretation erroneously downplays the English Crown’s contributions to Asian diplomacy. In the British Library, the National Archives and numerous other institutions in the United Kingdom there survive hundreds of letters exchanged between English and Asian rulers dating from the seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries. If the Crown’s role was genuinely minimal, why was the creation and exchange of such a large body of correspondence felt to be necessary' Adopting ... Read More

  • Singapore in the Cycles of the Longue Durée
    • Abstract: This article examines the history of Singapore against the long-term developments taking place in Southeast Asia over the course of approximately 700 years, spanning from the second half of the thirteenth century until the first half of the nineteenth century. It shares with other accounts a methodological approach associated with the writings of Fernand Braudel, which is based on long-term cycles and long-term impact rather than single events, decisions, or turning points. For the Singapore context, I think here especially of the book by Heng, Kwa and Tan entitled Singapore, A 700-Year History from Emporium to World City (2009), but also of the collection edited by Hack, Margolin and Delaye (2010).2 I will ... • The Brick-making Industry in Kuala Lumpur in the Late Nineteenth Century
    • Abstract: Following a series of destructive fires in 1881, the Selangor State Council took steps to ban the use of wood and thatch in construction in Kuala Lumpur. To meet the demand for bricks created by the new regulations, brick-making works developed around the city, and bricks played a significant part in shaping the city as it expanded in the decades that followed. In January 1881 a fire, believed to have started when an oil lamp fell inside an opium shop, killed three people and left 500 homeless. Another conflagration in August of the same year destroyed twelve houses.1 The damage caused by these fires was extensive because many houses were flimsy structures made of wood and attap, and residents stored ... • Managing Agency Capitalism and Malayan Rubber: Harrisons & Crosfield,
           Ltd. (1900–1940)
    • Abstract: In the nineteenth century, agency houses functioned as intermediaries linking commodity producers in Britain’s colonial empire with purchasers in Europe, and manufacturers in Europe with purchasers in Asia. The rubber boom at the start of the twentieth century added a new commodity to Asian trade, and the rapid expansion of the plantation rubber industry in Southeast Asia presented Britain’s agency houses with a major, albeit high-risk, opportunity. In the early years of the industry, rubber planting attracted European, Chinese and Indian entrepreneurs who set up numerous small estates.2 According to P. T. Bauer: Eastern merchants and enterprising individuals developed the early estates and ... Read More

  • Tanah Rata and the Development of the Cameron Highlands, 1925–2030
    • Abstract: Planning for the Cameron Highlands and the town of Tanah Rata was part of a larger pattern of development of hill stations in Malaya and elsewhere in the British Empire. Freeman describes hill stations as places where Europeans escaped the high temperatures in lowland areas of the tropics for comfort and the restoration of health.1 In these locations, Europeans enjoyed hobbies, sports and social contacts surrounded by landscapes and architecture reminiscent of their homelands.2 Geographers have pointed out that climatic conditions in the tropics were poorly understood at the time of colonial conquests, and an unhealthy and unhygienic life style led to many diseases among Europeans. Around the start of ... Read More

  • Muted Speech, Apa Khabar Orang Kampung, and To Singapore, with Love
    • Abstract: On 19 September 2014 a group of people flocked across the border from the Singaporean side of the Johor Strait to attend the Freedom Film Festival (FFN). This was a covert action conducted by a group on a mission: to watch To Singapore, With Love (Singapore, 2013; Chinese title: 星国恋, hereafter referred to as TSWL), a documentary film on political exiles from Singapore by Tan Pin Pin. The film was banned by the city-state, classified as ‘Not Allowed for All Ratings’ by the Media Development Authority (MDA) on 10 September 2014.1 Both Amir Muhammad’s Apa Khabar Orang Kampung (Malaysia, 2007; English title: Village People Radio Show, hereafter referred to as AKOK) and Tan’s TSWL tell stories ... • Cameron’s Highlands
    • Abstract: As recent contributions to the local press point to considerable public attention being focussed on the development of Cameron’s Highlands, a short account of the proposals to create a Hill Station and the progress that has been made may be of general interest. The area to which the name of Cameron’s Highlands is now given is situated on the east side of the mountain range which forms the backbone of the Peninsula. It is surrounded by a circle of mountains of which the highest points are Jasar (5,565 feet) and Riul (5,680 feet) on the west, Brinchang (6,665 feet) on the north and Berembun (6,036 feet) on the south. It comprises the level and gently undulating area drained by the Sungei Bertam at a ... Read More

  • Malacca in 1824: The Eye-witness Account of Captain Hyacinthe de
           Bougainville
    • Abstract: This article presents an original translation of the Baron Hyacinthe de Bougainville’s account of his visit to Malacca in 1824, as recounted in his Journal de la navigation autour du globe de “La Thétis” et “L’Espérance” pendant les années 1824, 1825 et 1826, published in two volumes in Paris in 1837. No thesis or argument is proposed here. The translation is complete and unedited, and is offered as a new and unabridged resource for researchers. Bougainville was not the first French explorer to visit Malacca. Half a century earlier, on 2 June 1769, French Captain Jean de Surville sailed from India in the Saint Jean-Baptiste en route for the Pacific Ocean. Nearly a month later, after ... Read More

  • A History of Malaysia by Barbara Watson Andaya and Leonard Y. Andaya
           (review)
    • Abstract: When internationally acclaimed Professor Leonard Andaya and his wife, the equally eminent Professor Barbara Andaya, come to Malaysia one expects something to happen in the world of Malaysian studies. Their sojourn in the Klang Valley in 2014 (and at Singapore’s Institute of Southeast Asian Studies) resulted in the publication this year of the third edition of their well-known book A History of Malaysia. Through A History of Malaysia the Andayas attempt to write a history of the country based on the available sources, scholarly yet readable for non-specialists by providing the historical background of the many issues that concern contemporary Malaysian society. The book is the manifestation of ... Read More

  • Admiral Matelieff’s Singapore and Johor (1606–1616) ed. by
           Peter Borschberg (review)
    • Abstract: This attractive paperback, with a generous number of beautiful and apposite illustrations, is designed for use by students as well as advanced researchers. It contains a long introduction of over 80 pages by the editor, Peter Borschberg, lucidly outlining the issues covered by the contents of the book. This is followed by a selection of documents and document extracts around and about the voyage of Admiral Cornelis Matelieff (or Matelief) de Jonge to Johor or, as the title insists, ‘Singapore and Johor’. Many of the texts come from the former working papers of Hugo Grotius. At the end of the book are a glossary and list of place names, both extremely useful tools in helping the reader make sense of the ... Read More

  • The Malaysian Islamic Party PAS 1951–2013: Islamism in a Mottled Nation
           by Farish Noor (review)
    • Abstract: This book The Malaysian Islamic Party PAS 1951–2013: Islamism in a Mottled Nation is a reprinted version of the original, which was published by Amsterdam University Press in 2014. The text details the history of Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) in an account that many scholars consider comprehensive and compelling. The lack of primary sources related to the early days of PAS mentioned briefly by the author appears to have little effect on this study. The book proposes and analyses internal and external chains of events that have shaped PAS. Subsequently, the text offers a critical observation of the Islamism adopted and promoted by the party from 1951 to 2013. The first four chapters of this ... Read More

  • Shaṭṭārīyah Silsilah in Aceh, Java, and the Lanao Area of Mindanao
           by Oman Fathurahman (review)
    • Abstract: The Shaṭṭārīyah is the earliest known Sufi (Muslim mystic) order, which gained influence in island Southeast Asian in the mid-seventeenth century. According to the short description by the Encyclopaedia Britannica it derives its name from either a fifteenth-century Indian mystic called Shaṭṭārī or the Arabic word shāṭir (‘breaker’), referring to one who has broken with the world. Oman Fathurahman is of a different opinion and makes clear that the Shaṭṭārīyah did not come from its centre in India but from Haramayn (the two holy cities of Islam, Mecca and Medina), where the Acehnese scholar ‘Abd al-Ra’uf al-Singkili (d. 1693) studied for decades, before working under the protection of the Acehnese court, which ... • The Authority of Influence: Women and Power in Burmese History by Jessica
           Harriden (review)
    • Abstract: In the preface, Harriden has explained her objective for the book as providing ‘a “long view” of gender-power relations in Burmese history’, ‘to examine women’s access to social, economic and political power over an extended historical period’ (p. vii). Harriden argues that, despite social disruptions and political upheavals brought about by British colonialism and their purported ‘civilising mission’, there is still much continuity with the pre-colonial period in terms of the nature, scope and limitations of female power and influence in Burmese society. Contributing to the vastly varied conditions of women during the different political eras she examined, continuity notwithstanding, were the socio-economic ... Read More

  • Witch Hunt and Conspiracy: The ‘Ninja Case’ in East Java by
           Nicholas Herriman (review)
    • Abstract: Witch-Hunt and Conspiracy: The ‘Ninja Case’ in East Java is a well-written and intriguing work which attempts to shed new light on the spate of murders in Banyuwangi, East Java, in the late 1990s. The author’s agenda is clear: through the work he attempts to rectify misunderstandings about the murders as resulting from an ‘elite conspiracy’. The author asserts that a more plausible explanation comes from understanding local villager perspectives (pp. 159–60). The book has eight chapters and the author immediately reveals and examines case studies based on his interviews and other material in Chapter 1: ‘Sorcerer Killings’. In Chapters 2–6, the author situates the killings in larger contexts from ... Read More

  • Questioning Modernity in Indonesia and Malaysia ed. by Wendy Mee and Joel
           S. Kahn (review)
    • Abstract: The contemporary world faces many challenges, both conceptual and empirical. Modernity has been disputed or seriously questioned. Postmodernist rhetoric claims modernity to be rather outdated despite the fact that to be modern simply means to be contemporary, to be here-and-now; therefore postmodern is modern, too. The book edited by Wendy Mee and Joel S. Kahn offers a good overview of current trends in treating questions and/or controversies of modernity in Malaysia and Indonesia. In the Introduction, Mee and Kahn offer to release modernity from its Western conceptual framework and to treat it as culturally grounded discursive stories of ‘self-designated moderns … about themselves and their ... • Unequal Thailand: Aspects of Income, Wealth and Power ed. by Pasuk
           Phongpaichit and Chris Baker (review)
    • Abstract: This is a book about the political economy of Thailand in the globalized era, focusing especially on the sensitive and much concerned issue plaguing the nation for a long time: inequality. What makes Thailand so conspicuous on this issue is the central theme of the book. The authors studied sources of money income and the social structure, which generate a kind of power that enables the privileged to be richer and more powerful while spelling an unfortunate future for the working population. The book chapters are the fruits of a research project on ‘Towards a More Equitable Thailand: A study of Wealth, Power, and Reform’. In the tumultuous years during which the nation was divided into two colours of yellow ... Read More

  • The Diaries of George C. Woolley, Volume 2: 1907–1913 by George C.
           Woolley (review)
    • Abstract: The first volume of Woolley’s diaries was reviewed in JMBRAS Vol 89 Part 1 (June 2016). This second, more substantial volume, covers the years 1907–113. The main episodes in Woolley’s life at this time were a brief stint as District Officer in Beaufort, then a stint from 8 November 1907 till March 1910 when he served as District Officer, Province Clarke, based at Sipitang. This was on the west coast of Borneo, readily accessible from Labuan and, also, partly by the new railway line to Tenom from Jesselton. It was a dagger-shaped district, extending from the Klias Peninsula in the north, south to beyond Long Pa Sia, bounded on the west by the Sarawak border. Woolley’s stint in Sipitang appears to have been an ... Read More
