  • Thomas Stamford Raffles' Masonic Career in Java: A New Perspective on the
           British Interregnum (1811–1816)
    • Abstract: It has long been known that Thomas Stamford Raffles was admitted to the Order of Freemasons during his tenure as Lieutenant-Governor of Java when the island was briefly under British rule (1811–16). However, many uncertainties and questions remain about the time and the circumstances of his initiation as well as of his advancements within the Order. In Dutch and British masonic historical studies contradictory statements abound, even more so in the case of the general literature and on relevant internet sites. This confusion can in part be explained by the fact that Freemasonry, especially in this politically turbulent era, is characterized by secrets and secrecy. Inaccuracies in the historical studies written by ... Read More

  • Family Narratives and Abandoned Monuments of the May 13 Riot in the Sungai
           Buloh Leprosarium
    • Abstract: …remembering violence does not require an elaborate tomb, a guarded gravesite or a lavish ceremony, much less a monument. What is needed is a space to speak and communicate freely and without fear, and a language that can encompass both those who would speak and those who would listen for wisdom. What is needed is a way to live together—or at least to survive side by side—with what can never be forgotten, with losses that can never be restored.A week-long riot broke out in Malaysia on 13 May 1969 in the aftermath of the country's third general election. The country had been governed since 1957 by a coalition formed by three major communal political parties, the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), the ... Read More

  • A Chinese Labour Broker in Malaya: Lee Kwai Lim and his Kam Lun Tai
           Company
    • Abstract: Migrant-brokers' (agents) played an essential part in the migration of labour from China to other parts of the world in the first half of the twentieth century. They recruited workers, provided lodging, made shipping arrangements, and offered remittance services. This article explores how labour migration was made possible and organized by brokers, most notably in the process of recruitment and transportation, by looking at the career of Lee Kwai Lim, during the late Qing and Republican period. Lee's business, Kam Lun Tai, began in Xinyi, China, as a company dealing in silk. Lee turned the company into a transnational labour agency with branches in Hong Kong, Malaya and Singapore. Building on this foundation, he ... Read More

  • Gene Z. Hanrahan: Elusive Historian of the Malayan Emergency
    • Abstract: Every student of the Malayan Emergency is familiar with the work of Gene Z. Hanrahan. In 1954, under the auspices of the Institute of Pacific Relations, he published a monograph, The Communist Struggle in Malaya, in which he provided abridged translations of a number of the Malayan Communist Party's (MCP) most important internal documents on political and military strategy from its founding to 1951. There is practically no major or minor work on the conflict that does not cite Hanrahan's book.1 In most cases, the production of such a crucial book would be part of a scholar's larger research agenda. But the situation with Hanrahan is different.Cheah Boon Kheng, a pre-eminent scholar of modern Malay(si)an history ... Read More

  • William George Maxwell: A Biographical Note
    • Abstract: Ed. Note: Most scholars have manuscripts in their files that for one reason or another never made it into print. JMBRAS occasionally provides an outlet for these orphan works in a section called An Article I Never Published. This issue features an article prepared by John M. Gullick (1916-2012), who wasone of the most prolific contributors to JMBRAS in the post-war era. (See JMBRAS72 pt. 2, 1999: J.M. Gullick Festschrift issue). At the time of his death in 2012, hispapers included several unpublished works, some of which have been publishedposthumously. The following article on W. G. Maxwell was prepared as theForeword to a new edition of Maxwell’s In Malay Forests. In the event, the newedition was never ... Read More

  • Ancient Southeast Asia by John N. Miksic and Geok Yian Goh (review)
    • Abstract: When opening a volume entitled Ancient Southeast Asia, one is inclined to ponder: 'How far does ancient extend here'' as well as 'What constitutes Southeast Asia''. The temporal and spatial bounds of this volume and its subject are important. The 'ancient' rubric here extends from the earliest evidence of premodern hominids in Java some 1.6 million years ago until the beginning of the sixteenth century, with the arrival of Europeans and the emergence of the 'early modern' in the region. But what region are we referring to' The authors adopt an essentially modern definition of the Southeast Asia region, extending over the ten modern nation states of ASEAN, together with Timor Leste. This is fairly unexceptional in ... Read More

  • Boundaries and Beyond: China's Maritime Southeast in Late Imperial Times
           by Ng Chin Keong (review)
    • Abstract: This is an important book for scholars of World History, China Studies and Southeast Asia. Ng Chin Keong's depth of knowledge about Chinese and Southeast Asian history as well as his extensive knowledge about transnational processes in the context of world historical process makes this book really stand out. It provides readers a very nuanced appreciation of China's historical links with Southeast Asia and beyond, and how it understood the world beneath its borders. This is the true value of the book to this reader; China's political, economic and military resurgence and projection of power have great implications to Southeast Asia and this book is critical in providing valuable historical context to ...            Vienne (review)

A translation of the French original (Brunei: de la thalassocratie à la rente, 2012), the English version organized in four large parts, starts with an introduction entitled Prologue (pp. 1–10), followed by part two 'From Thalassocracy to Rentier State' (13–128) that includes a survey of Brunei's history from 40,000 BCE to 1984, the year Brunei achieved independence from Great Britain. • Charismatic Monks of Lanna Buddhism ed. by Paul T. Cohen (review)
    • Abstract: Ever since Max Weber wrote about 'charismatic authority' this sociological theme has served as an important anchor for understanding the rise of religious movements and the attraction that certain men and women have on other people. Although Weber's concept of charismatic authority does not necessarily conflate with religious authority, the sociological study of charisma thematically slips easily into the sociological study of religion. The collection of essays in the edited volume Charismatic Monks of Lanna Buddhism explores a tradition of Buddhist movements in northern Thailand and invites an elucidation of the Thai Buddhist conception of charisma referred to by the word barami. Its particular focus is on a ... Read More

  • Tunku: An Odyssey of a Life Well-Lived and Well-Loved by Kobkua
           Suwannathat Pian (review)
    • Abstract: Between the late 1950s and early 2000s, there at least ten biographies of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj (1903–90) were published. Additionally, there were scores of Tunku's semi-autobiographical writings. Moreover, in 2007, the 50th anniversary of merdeka (independence), Tunku, who played the pivotal role, was accorded two tributes on stage: the English-language Tunku the Musical, and the Malay-language piece Teater Muzikal Putra (Musical Theatre of the Prince). Significantly, Tunku the Musical bravely broke new ground in dealing with political controversy, hitherto taboo in Malaysian musicals, focusing on events leading to the formation of Malaysia (1963), Tunku's tenure as the first Malaysian prime minister ... • Mobile Citizens: French Indians in Indochina 1858–1954 by Natasha
           Pairaudeau (review)
    • Abstract: This book tells the story and history of Indian migrants to Indochina during the French colonial period. France was the colonial power in the three Indochinese states of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam; its dominance over Indochina ended with its defeat by the North Vietnamese military at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. France left Indochina and never succeeded in making a comeback, political or military. According to the author, the Indian migrant community in Indochina was a thriving community which managed to acquire many rights and privileges as French citizens. The book presents an interesting account of the origin of these 'French Indians', their legal status, rights and privileges as French citizens, spheres of activity ... Read More

  • Thailand's Hyper-Royalism: Its Past Success and Present Predicament by
           Thongchai Winichakul (review)
    • Abstract: It is difficult to remember that not long ago, scholars rarely gave much attention to the Thai monarchy. If they did, their view of the monarchy was mostly positive. While naturally a conservative institution, the monarchy appeared to be generally and genuinely popular. It seemed to provide unity and a sense of national identity in an era of rapid economic and social change and seemingly rampant Westernization. King Bhumibol himself appeared dedicated, modest, a pious Buddhist, who could play a crucial conciliatory role at moments of national crisis. Some even credited the king with having contributed to Thailand's process of democratization. For international scholars and media commentators, it was not too much of ... Read More

  • Chinese Deathscapes in Insulindia: A Special Issue of Archipel, vol. 92
(2016) ed. by Claudine Salmon (review)
    • Abstract: This special issue of the journal Archipel comprising seven articles and an introduction is a welcome addition to the historiography of cemeteries in Southeast Asia, relatively scanty in comparison with many other subjects in the history discipline. The references of the articles in this collection, from a workshop convened in Manila in August 2015 with a few written subsequently, supply a useful survey of the current state of the writing–largely in European (mainly English) and Chinese language literature, in keeping with its focus, "Chinese Deathscapes".It has long been recognised that textual materials alone may be insufficient to reconstruct a satisfactory narrative of historical processes in proto-historic ...
